Today we're talking about the importance of consent when excavating our own trauma on the page, how the right readers can make authors feel just as seen and heard and held as our stories make them feel, the heavy burden of self-advocacy, and the impossibility of self-caring our way out of systemic oppression. If you're looking to be more gentle with yourself and your work, this is the conversation for you. So without further ado, give yourself permission to hit pause on your day and then enjoy my conversation with Natalia Sylvester. Rob Harrell and I discuss how the launch of his newest novel, WINK, has been impacted by the quarantine for COVID-19 along with most other aspects of writing life. He shares how he met his literary agent and how they work together on his novels. We talk about his becoming a professional cartoonist with multiple syndicated strips, the upcoming movie RUMBLE based on his novel MONSTER ON THE HILL, the qualities of Hoosier men named Rob, and so much more. Rob Harrell wrote and drew the syndicated daily comic strip Big Top through 2007 and currently creates the long-running strip Adam@Home. Harrell wrote and illustrated the graphic novel Monster on the Hill, published by Top Shelf. The story of a town with a down-on-his-luck monster, Monster was the inspiration for the animated movie Rumble (2021) from Paramount Pictures. Next, Harrell wrote the Life of Zarf trilogy of hybrid novels. Published by Dial Books for Young Readers, they tell the story of Zarf Belford, a troll attending middle school in a fairy tale world. Harrell’s next book is Wink, the funny but heartfelt story of Ross Maloy, a seventh-grader dealing with a horrible diagnosis and cancer treatments – all while trying to just blend in and survive middle school. As an illustrator, Harrell has worked with clients including Mad, Simon and Schuster, American Greetings, Time, Inc. and Volkswagen. His figurative paintings have been shown in solo shows in San Francisco, Austin and Indianapolis. Rob lives in Zionsville, Indiana with his wife Amber and their two dogs, Cooper and Kasey.
Lion Lessons (2016), written and illustrated by Jon Agee, published by Dial Books for Young Readers. This is a story about determination and being the best you can be, at whatever you choose.
Children's books are part of the fabric of parenthood. We read them. Then we read them again. We come to know them as well as our kids' stuffed animals (and better than their friends). But what makes one of these deceptively simple tomes tick? Fatherly Podcast host Joshua David Stein, a children's book author himself, and co-host Postell Pringle speak to editor Kate Harrison of Dial Books for Young Readers about what makes a good idea great and how a great idea can evolve into a class. Also, Joshua sings. Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Artists are so often plagued by feelings of self-doubt. We're afraid to go after what we really want because we wonder if we're competitive enough to create a sustainable life. We'll talk ourselves out of pursuing a career in the thing that we love and try to fix our square peg into a round hole. But what if I told you that the thing you're most passionate about will probably be the thing at which you can be the most successful? Once you hone in on what you're meant to do, it will all fall into place. This should be the goal. I'm always encouraging artists to focus on business because of the creative freedom that comes from it. To remind us to follow our true passions and talent, I've brought on quirky illustrator and graphic designer Holly Hatam. She is the illustrator of #1 New York Times Bestselling Picture Book, DEAR GIRL, and has illustrated books for Dial Books, Random House, little bee books, Annick Press, and Tilbury House. Holly is also the owner and designer of TearDrop Paperie, where she designs and sells cheeky paper products for weddings and baby. Holly found true success by finally honing in on what she loves: illustrating children's books. To learn how to create your own business doing what you were born to do, download this episode now. THE GRIT AND HUNGER WARRIOR “If it doesn't speak to my soul, I don't do it.” - Holly Hatam Highlights - You control your vibe. It doesn't take a long time for your career to turn around when you find the right niche. Work on your own personal style. Learn from artists you admire, take aspects you love, and make it your own. Your style is not something you're innately born with. You have to develop it. Cross-Creativity: find inspiration from a wide variety of endeavors like music, movies, and nature. Stop comparing yourself to other artists. Room on the Broom is a British children's book by writer and playwright Julia Donaldson, and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. In this lightweight tale, by the author of The Gruffalo, a witch on a broom-ride is soon accompanied by a cat, a dog, a parrot, and a frog who have helped the butter-fingered witch retrieve her hat, a ribbon, and her wand. After the broom breaks, they then meet up with a not-so-scary dragon who wants to have the witch for lunch. The loyal animals form a chimera who scares off the dragon. The witch repays her friends by conjuring a nicer broom for them all to ride. The story's rhyming and goofy suspense aren't groundbreaking, but readers will likely find it refreshing to see a clumsy witch. Ages 4-8. Published by Dial Books. Room on the Broom has been translated into 21 languages and has won 6 book awards, and since been made into an animated film. The animated film was nominated for an Academy Award for best short animated film in 2013. This version was read by Skidompha Library's Terry Hapach with her usual great enthusiasm.
In this episode of the Picturebooking Podcast I have a fun, informative interview with picture book author Jesse Klausmeier. Jesse shares her experience working for Nickelodeon and Dial Books. Along with the process her Chronicle team went through to create the picture book "Open This Little Book."
