There was a phony article going around that Jello Biafra was going to reunite with East Bay Ray and Klaus Flouride to once again be The Dead Kennedys. It's not true, but why do the DKS have such beef? Let's examine some of the feud with this Jello Biafra interview about the legal case involving a lawsuit between band members.FRUMESS is POWERED by www.riotstickers.com/frumessJOIN THE PATREON FOR LESS THAN A $2 CUP OF COFFEE!!https://www.patreon.com/Frumess
Dead Kennedys - the scabrous, Northern Cali-based band that taught the world how to stage dive - created some of the most indelible anthems in hardcore, naming and shaming those in charge and challenging its audience to face hard truths. The band's gone through a few line-up changes in its 40+ years, but one constant has been the instrumental interplay of bassist Klaus Flouride with guitarist and co-founding member East Bay Ray, along with the hyperspeed precision of drummer D.H. Peligro (who passed in 2022). Live, they've worked with vocalist Skip (the Wynona Riders) for longer than original singer Jello Biafra was in the band, and they're gearing up for more shows. Klaus joins the pod to talk about the band's history and musical gestalt, his own idiosyncratic solo output (coming soon to a digital music service near you!), and how they may have to update some of their classics for our present day insanity. In this episode I share a brief history of the Dead Kennedys and the impact they had on the punk and hardcore scene back in the late 70's and 80's. I also talk about a few of my favorite songs and how well their music translates into the modern era.
We're hanging out with Dead Kennedys guitarist East Bay Ray to discuss the forthcoming remastered edition of Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables. Featuring a sonic once-over from Chris Lord-Alge, whose credits include everyone from Prince to Madonna to Green Day and My Chemical Romance, as well a new 40th anniversary book featuring essays and quotes from Billie Joe Armstrong (Green Day), Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters) and Duff McKagan (Guns 'n Roses), this new edition provides a fresh angle on this enduring classic, and the decades have done nothing to diminish its anti-establishment screeds. On his episode, Ray explains how it happened, addresses Jello Biafra's criticisms and describes the DIY approach that fueled the original recording.Got a thought to share about classic punk, your favorite Dead Kennedy's song or anything else? The Mitch Lafon and Jeremy White Show welcomes East Bay Ray from Dead Kennedys! Dead Kennedys' classic 1980 album Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetableshas been remixedfrom the original multitrack tapes by Chris Lord-Alge (Chaka Khan, Green Day, Bruce Springsteen). The band's debut album (original release date: September 2, 1980) is politically incendiary while also wholly musically adept – provocative and often idiosyncratic agit prop lyrics bouncing off of careening, adrenaline-infused musicianship. So it's only natural that the 40th anniversary re-release of this classic album is revisited by the GRAMMY winning mix engineer Chris Lord-Alge. Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables – 2022 Mix will be available September 30, 2022 viaManifesto Records and available for pre-sale here: https://lnk.to/DKFreshFruit2022. Help support the show. Punk rock is about energy, attitude, and message. It's been the gateway drug for a lot of guitarists and music lovers. And those forces are what steered East Bay Ray away from his bar-band gig in 1978. “The little hairs on the back of my neck stood up,” Ray remembered during a https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/forgotten-heroes-east-bay-ray (2016 PG interview). “I saw the Weirdos playing. I said, ‘This is what I want to do.' I phased myself out of the bar band and put an ad up in Aquarius Records and Rather Ripped Records. Klaus Flouride (bassist Geoffrey Lyall) and Jello Biafra (singer Eric Boucher) answered the ad.” And with the addition of drummer Ted (Bruce Slesinger), the Dead Kennedys were born. By the time they recorded their 1981 EP In God We Trust, Inc. (on their own independent label, Alternative Tentacles), Ted was gone and D.H. Peligro (Darren Henley) became their stalwart skin slammer. Through the band's initial eight years, four albums, and an EP, their subversive harpoon of jagged political commentary was tipped by Biafra's lyrics. That got the nation's attention, but what inspires musicians to this day was the power trio's cohesive combination of familiar and unfamiliar elements of punk and primal rock. Sure, you've got the power chords and the four-on-the-floor tempos, but depth and nuance under the biting messaging is essential to the DK's chemistry. Their punk-rock bangers have modal tendencies and atonal flourishes, and some of their most thrilling songs have odd-metered backbones. Their debut single, “California Über Alles,” is a take on composer Maurice Ravel's Boléro, no less. And nobody else in the land of the 6-string shreds quite like East Bay Ray. “One of the reasons our songs have lasted so long is the structure underneath has a lot in common with a Beatles song or a Motown song or even a '30s standard,” he says. “There are basic constructions that make a song work. I really had a hard time copying or figuring out solos off my favorite recordings when learning to play, so I'd develop my own musical method to get from one place to another. It's actually a lack of technique that helped with the music.” His creativity and resourcefulness don't stop there. East Bay Ray was the band's co-producer/engineer on most recordings, and he's tinkered with his own tone tools, assembling partscasters that best suited his approach. Ray has jammed humbuckers into the bridge of a T-style for a twangier bite that helps his rapid-fire arpeggios sting a bit more. He's slapped on short-scale Japanese F-style necks for slinkier playability. And, most notably, he put a Maestro Echoplex in front of his amp to create the signature clanging sound heard on his classic recordings with the band. (“One of my favorite records of all time is Elvis Presley's Sun Sessions. That is one of the records that inspired me to get an Echoplex, to get that slapback echo.”) “We just didn't know the rules on what to play and how to play,” he relates. “That's where not knowing something forces you to make your own solution, creating something unique and new, proving that necessity is the mother of invention. The lack of technique and knowledge helped create our sound and the music.” Before the Dead Kennedys' headlining show at Nashville's Brooklyn Bowl on June 15th, PG hit the stage for a brief but illuminating tone talk. We covered Ray's economically rich setup that includes a single Schecter doublecut and a simplified, solid-sounding Marshall, and we were enlightened about why he puts his Line 6 delay ahead of the amp and what that does to repeats. It may say "Metal" on the marquee, but we've never shied away from covering all genres of heavy music. Punk rock legends Dead Kennedys are an outfit we practically grew up with. Upon their demise, Jello Biafra remained on our radars thru his spoken word performances. But admittedly, the rest of our "Fab Four" kind of fell off our radars. Until now. We had the golden opportunity to speak with DKs axeman East Bay Ray as his new(ish) project The Killer Smiles recently dropped their latest record. Another "Bucket List" moment as we discussed KS' album "Raising The Stakes", the differences between his projects, and Mr. Ray shows he still has the punk rock spirit. In our "News, Views, and Tunes", we crank some killer tunes from said Smiles, Messiah, Thundermother, and of course some classic DKs. In our "Indie Spotlight", we head to LaLaLand some some brutal death metal with Bloodfeast Ritual. Honrs Up and Stay Healthy! This Episode is sponsored by Trve Kvlt Coffee. Dave Ross has a fantastic new album out now called The Only Man Who Has Ever Had Sex. You can download it, but if you see him at a show, you can buy a download card with a special flipbook he's made with some beautiful photos and silliness. It's Ross's attempt to give you a little something extra for your participation, which is something he does in his comedy, as well. A few years ago, I reviewed the aptly-titled album Holy Fuck for the comedy review site The Spit Take. It was a who's who of alternative comedy taped at the recurring show of the same name, curated by Ross. But his new album was my first prolonged exposure to him, and I'm glad for that. The album captures his love for dumb comedy and his compulsion to try to say something meaningful. He talks about getting high and eating the best fried chicken he'd ever tasted at a gas station in Florida, but he also interrogates extreme masculinity, poking fun at the type of guys what might utter phrases like, “I want to marry violence” and “I wish I could be a truck.” It's an appealing mix, and there are a lot of lines that make me laugh just remembering them. I was happy to find that Ross was coming to Boston shortly after the album's release, to a Monday-night show called CitySide Comedy. I caught up with him there to talk about dumb and thoughtful comedy, the influence of punk, and, as we started the interview as he was finishing his supper, kale. I usually make at least some minor edits to a conversation to make it flow a bit better or cut out some pauses and stammers, but since we have near-constant background noise, the edits would have been noticeable and distracting. So this is the full thing, start to finish. You can find out more about him on his Web site at www.davetotheross.com, and also find him on Twitter and Instagram under @davetotheross. The new album is called The Only Man Who Has Ever Had Sex, and it's out on aspecialthing records now, and you can find them at www.astrecords.com. Thanks also to Sam Ike and Anjan Biswas of CitySide Comedy for bringing Ross to town. If you happen to live in the Boston area, you can find out about the show on Facebook by searching CitySide Comedy. This week's featured track is an early rehearsal version of “California Uber Alles” by Dead Kennedys. A couple of years before their debut album, Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables, punk pioneers Dead Kennedys got together and recorded a rehearsal of a lot of the music that would wind up on that album. That's being released on September 27 under the name Iguana Studios Rehearsal Tape – San Francisco 1978. Jello Biafra wrote the song about then California governor Jerry Brown, but has said in interviews he softened on Brown a bit once the Reagan era began, and even changed the lyrics to include the line “We've got a bigger problem now.” This version is a bit slower and a bit more sinister. The recording is from 1978 and includes the band's original line-up of Biafra, East Bay Ray and 6025 on guitar, Klaus Flouride on bass, and Ted on drums. It's a wonderful lo-fi punk slice of mud. There are a few tour dates planned for the beginning of October, but casual fans, if there is such a thing as a casual Dead Kennedys fan, should note the current line-up does not include Biafra. The album is out September 27 on Manifesto Records.

Marc and Rob discuss how Jello Biafra was influenced by the assassination of JFK and went on to form ‘Dead Kennedys' with East Bay Ray, plus some of the exploits of Jordan including how she worked for Vivian Westwood and was married to an Ant. Also (spoiler alert) J is for The Jam.
“People need to look at the Internet as a plantation sharecropper system - Yeah, you got your cotton really cheap but is that how you want society to go forward?” Episode 012: East Bay Ray - Safe Harbors and Cheap Cotton. From its infancy in the San Francisco Bay area in the 1970s to today, the enduring legacy of the Dead Kennedys, is due in no small part to its founding member, East Bay Ray. Ray’s Music, The Oakland Tribune cited ray as penning, “some of the most recognizable and memorable guitar riffs to emerge from the initial West Coast punk movement”, and Ray’s drive have kept the band alive and relevant for more than three decades. So how does a self described, “middle class band”, one who managed to survive, Napster, The PMRC, and the wrath of local sheriffs survive in age of the internet? It’s not easy. As someone who considers himself a modern, “Renaissance Man… someone who thinks with both sides of his brain”, Ray is worried about the future of music. Since Google purchased YouTube, Ray argues, he has seen local artists in the Bay area’s, “income cut by half.” He’s seen the Dead Kennedy’s music, - music he wrote, owns and preformed - misused and abused on YouTube; ”Our song, ‘holiday in Cambodia,’ there, a video of just our DK logo and our song playing, and it has I think 14 million “views and that's money for Google is not money for dead Kennedy’s.” As for the future? He doesn’t see much hope for another band like the Dead Kennedy’s to break through the noise, “There will be music, but it will be blander - because you need an audience 11 times bigger.” And thanks to the fact that some of the internet giants of the world hide behind the nation’s “Safe Harbor” laws, there isn’t much money there for the musicians in any case. “People need to look at the Internet as a plantation sharecropper system - Yeah, you got your cotton really cheap but is that how you want society to go forward?” Its a fascinating look at the past, present and future of Music, through the eyes of one of the music industry giants.
