On his mom's side, Woody LaBounty's San Francisco roots go back to 1850. In Part 1, get to know Woody, who, today, is the president and CEO of SF Heritage. But he's so, so much more than that. He begins by tracing his lineage back to the early days of the Gold Rush. His maternal great-great-great-grandfather arrived here mid-Nineteenth Century. Woody even knows what ship he was on and the exact day that it arrived in the recently christened city of San Francisco. On Woody's dad's side, the roots are about 100 years younger than that. His father grew up in Fort Worth, Texas (like I did). His dad's mom was single and fell on hard times in Texas. She came to San Francisco, where she had a step-brother. Woody's parents met at the Donut Bowl at 10th Avenue and Geary Boulevard (where Boudin Bakery is today). Donut Bowl was a combination donut shop/hot dog joint. At the time the two met, his dad worked as a cook there and his mom was in high school. His mom and her friends went to nearby Washington High and would hang out at the donut shop after school. The next year or so, his parents had their first kid—Woody. They came from different sides of the track, as it were. Woody's mom's family wasn't crazy about her dating his working-class dad, who didn't finish high school. But once his mom became pregnant with Woody, everything changed. The couple had two more sons after Woody. One of his brothers played for the 49ers in the Nineties and lives in Oregon today. His other brother works with underserved high school kids in New Jersey, helping them get into college. Woody shares some impressions of his first 10 years or so of life by describing The City in the mid-Seventies. Yes, kids played in the streets and rode Muni to Candlestick Park and The Tenderloin to go bowling. It was also the era of Patty Hearst and the SLA, Jonestown, and the Moscone/Milk murders. But for 10-year-old Woody, it was home. It felt safe, like a village. Because I'm a dork, I ask Woody to share his memories of when Star Wars came out. Obliging me, he goes on a sidebar about how the cinematic phenomenon came into his world in San Francisco. He did, in fact, see Star Wars in its first run at the Coronet. He attended Sacred Heart on Cathedral Hill when it was an all-boys high school. He grew up Catholic, although you didn't have to be to go to one of SF's three Catholic boys' high schools. Woody describes, in broad terms, the types of families that sent their boys to the three schools. Sacred Heart was generally for kids of working-class folks. After school, if they didn't take Muni back home to the Richmond District, Woody and his friends might head over to Fisherman's Wharf to play early era video games. Or, most likely, they'd head over to any number of high schools to talk to girls. Because parental supervision was lacking, let's say, Woody and his buddies also frequently went to several 18+ and 21+ spots. The I-Beam in the Haight, The Triangle in the Marina, The Pierce Street Annex, Enrico's in North Beach, Mabuhay Gardens. There, he saw bands like The Tubes and The Dead Kennedy's, although punk wasn't really his thing. Woody was more into jazz, RnB, and late-disco. We chat a little about café culture in San Francisco, something that didn't really exist until the Eighties. To this day, Woody still spends his Friday mornings at Simple Pleasures Cafe. And we end Part 1 with Woody's brief time at UC Berkeley (one year) and the real reason he even bothered to try college. Check back next week for Part 2 with Woody LaBounty. And this Thursday, look for a bonus episode all about We Players and their upcoming production of Macbeth at Fort Point. We recorded this episode in Mountain Lake Park in March 2025. When the dreams and promises you've placed your hopes in end up being a mirage, its only human to feel angry.  In the mid 1970's, a lot of teens and young adults found themselves in this camp.  The nation's shift toward a decidedly more cynical era could be heard in anti-war statements such as "War is not healthy for children and other living things"  On the equal rights agenda, the demand for black civil rights encouraged a louder beating of the drum as seen in the rise of feminism.  At the same time, both movements continued receiving backlash from the country's conservatives, especially The "Silent Majority" campaign, responding to the ‘liberal excesses' of the counterculture.Running through everything, there was a feeling that the social changes that the ‘60s had promised were as far away as ever.  America's kids were caught in the cross-hairs.  America was experiencing an epidemic of frustration, anxiety and anger.  With nothing to do, and a sense that the walls were closing in, teens living in places like New York, Detroit and Los Angeles, swam in an ocean of boredom and alienation that needed venting.  Punk's rawness and DIY attitude made it easy for anyone who had the need to hit back, or at least spit into the audience, to become an anti-hero.  In this first of two episodes on the origins of American Punk, we draw a through line from early New York proto-punk bands like the Velvet Underground, the MC5 and the New York Dolls through to California bands like X, Black Flag and the Dead Kennedy's.  You'll come away understanding how the idealism of the 1960's gave way to the cynicism and anger of the 1970's punk movement.  And yet, through it all, America's kids were still demanding change and even in the cynicism, holding out for something better. In This EpisodeJohn Lennon - Give Me Some TruthScene from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegasthe Rolling Stones - Gimme ShelterTV News – End of Vietnam WarScene from “Network”Scene from the GodfatherThe Clash – Police on My BackPink Floyd – Have a CigarThe MC5 – Kick Out the JamsThe Stooges – I Wanna Be Your DogIggy Pop – InterviewThe Velvet Underground – Venus in FursThe New York Dolls – Jet BoyDavid Bowie – SuffragetteDavid Bowie – InterviewDavie Bowie – Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from MarsDavid Bowie – Rock and Roll SuicideThe Ramones – Blitzkrieg BopThe Ramones - InterviewLinks to related show content from prior episodesThis episode refers back to a few topics covered in prior episodes. We invite you to learn more about these ideas!Use the links, below. Minimalism https://americansong.buzzsprout.com/1622638/9672982-the-celestial-pulse-of-minimalismThe Blueshttps://americansong.buzzsprout.com/1622638/8276409-the-duality-of-the-blues-episode-7-of-american-song Call and Responsehttps://americansong.buzzsprout.com/1622638/8532047-the-rising-of-gospel-music-and-how-it-inspired-the-world

America's Punk movement was started on both coasts.  Early proto-punks like the MC5 and the New York Dolls were followed by a number of other early iconic acts who played at several New York clubs, including CBGB's (Country Blue Grass and Blues), such as the The Ramones, the Talking Heads, Blondie, and Patti Smith.  Meanwhile, LA and San Francisco had a decidedly more political movement propelled by bands like X, The Dead Kennedy's, and Black Flag.  These bands had more in common musically with UK groups like the Sex Pistols and the Clash.  In this episode, you'll see how the Punk Movement on both coasts continued to develop in the early 1980s, and you'll see what made these bands so utterly unique.  You won't want to miss a minute! In This EpisodeThe Ramones – Beat on the BratThe Ramones – Rock and Roll High SchoolU2 – The Miracle of Joey RamoneThe Ramones Family – Grammy AwardsThe Talking Heads – Psycho KillerThe Talking Heads – Once in a LifetimeThe Talking Heads – Burning Down the HouseDavid Byrne Interview – David LettermanBlondie – Hanging on the TelephoneBlondie – One Way or AnotherPatti Smith – GloriaPatti Smith – InterviewPatti Smith – Piss FactoryThe Dead Kennedy's – Holiday in CambodiaThe Dead Kennedy's – Kill the PoorJello Biafra – PMRC Interview (Parent's Music Resources Council)Black Flag – Rise AboveBlag Flag – DepressionX – Los AngelesX – Johnny Hit and Run PaulineThe Violent Femmes – Gone Daddy GoneThe Pogues – If I Should Fall From Grace with GodGogol Bordello – ImmigradiadaGreen Day – American IdiotFlush the Orange TurdLinks to related show content from prior episodesThis episode refers back to a few topics covered in prior episodes. We invite you to learn more about these ideas!Use the links, below.Minimalismhttps://americansong.buzzsprout.com/1622638/9672982-the-celestial-pulse-of-minimalismThe Blueshttps://americansong.buzzsprout.com/1622638/8276409-the-duality-of-the-blues-episode-7-of-american-song Call and Responsehttps://americansong.buzzsprout.com/1622638/8532047-the-rising-of-gospel-music-and-how-it-inspired-the-world

11/22/23: DEAD KENNEDY'S DEAD RINGER W/ CHUCK OCHELLI It has been 60 years since the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. When an anniversary of one of the greatest conspiracies of all time gets a new breath of life, it is a great opportunity to dig up a little history and feature an overlooked theory that seems to be making a comeback now that a new documentary on Paramount + called, JFK: What the Doctors Saw." It brings to light stunning revelations from doctors who were in the E.R. on the day of President John F. Kennedy's assassination. The documentary avoided the coincidence of Dallas Police Officer J.D. Tippit and JFK being shot and killed within 45 minutes and how they looked very much alike. There is strong speculation that their bodies were switched before the autopsy. Based on the discrepancies between photos and x-rays, common sense dictates a probable connection and an amazing synchronicity. Tonight on Ground Zero, Clyde Lewis talks with JFK assassination researcher, Chuck Ochelli about DEAD KENNEDY'S DEAD RINGER. #GroundZero #ClydeLewis #JDTippit #JFK #DeadRinger https://groundzeromedia.org/11-22-23-dead-kennedys-dead.../ Ground Zero with Clyde Lewis is live M-F from 7-10pm, pacific time, and streamed for free at https://groundzero.radio and talkstreamlive.com. The buzz was real in february. Every Friday is considered "new" music Friday for most media sites where everyone tries to get the latest scoop on what people will be listening to throughout the day. If you visited any comment section on February 24, then you most likely saw someone make a note about the song, "The Lost Art of Shutting Up." I initially heard about Totally Slow when they released their epic record called "Casual Drag." I kept thinking about how Refresh Records had found a good one and they better project this band to the world. The band followed up their third album with their February single, which was originally on a complilation album, but the group thought it made sense to release it as a single as well. When I started to poke around someone even told me "they should be the biggest band on the label." That is when I knew I had to have Scott on to talk about the new release and so much more. If you are a fan of 90s hardcore punk, then this is the place for you. Scott has been destined for this ride since his early days when he would pass around Dead Kennedy and Agent Orange cassette tapes on the bus. Now, he is opening for bands like Agent Orange. Season 5 Episode 13 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio on 31 Mar 2022.  We kicked off with some ACDC, the title track of their 2016 release Black Ice.  From arguably the biggest rock band in the world we took in 3 lesser-known outfits i.e. Left Lane Cruiser, Monster Truck, and Motor Sister before spending some time with a couple of '70s classics from Rush and Nazareth.  'Zeit', the new release from Rammstein, made its TSORR debut and it's a great track.  Zeit means time, so it was fitting to also take a listen to Pink Floyd's wonderful track 'Time' off dark Side of The Moon.  The sad passing of Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins deserved some TSORR recognition.  We took a listen to Taylor with the Foo's in 'All My Life' then a track off his solo EP Kota.  The track is wonderfully titled' I've Got Some Not Being Around You To Do Today'.  Taylor was way more than just the drummer for the band he was a part of the creative whole, a unique multi-talented character who breathed energy and charisma into the band.  From there we took a listen to Dream Widow which is an album Dave Grohl put together as a soundtrack to the Foos 2022 movie Studio 666.  Apparently, Dave played drums, guitar, bass and did all the vocals but it's a bit unclear in the literature how much the rest of the band were involved.   We took a listen to Bollywood out of India and a track called 'Aaj' off their album Rakshak.  It made sense to follow it with 'Ratamahatta' off Roots.  Two other tracks that make sense together were Halestorm's 'Break-In' featuring Amy Lee and In This Moment with 'The Fighter'.  To restore balance and get the show out of slow, dark, emotional albeit excellent stuff we played out with an energetic couple of tracks from Kiss with 'Rocket Ride', The Distillers with 'Sick of It All' and My Chemical Romance closed the set with 'Welcome To The Black Parade'.   P.S. After over 4 years of hoping it was fantastic to announce and celebrate the return of The Gaslight Anthem.  They are doing a reunion tour and are expected to record a new album.  Happy days.  Artists featured:  ACDC, Left Lane Cruiser, Motor Sister, Monster Truck, The Screaming Jets, Rush, Nazareth, Quiet Riot, Rammstein, Motörhead, Sanctuary, The Stooges, Pink Floyd, Queensrÿche, Gary Moore, The Dead Daisies, Foo Fighters, Taylor Hawkins, Dream Widow, Coal Chamber, Bloodywood, Sepultura, The Clash, Gary Numan., Dead Kennedy's, The Black Cat Bones, Jack Hammer, Dan Patlansky, L.A. Cobra, Kid Rock, Dino Jelusic with Mendoza, Halestorm feat Amy Lee, In This Moment, The Gas Light Anthem, Kiss, Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown,  The Distillers, My Chemical Romance

History lesson for you:  "Punk Rock" was not invented by the British in the mid 1970's.  I know, it surprised me too.  The term was apparently coined by music critics (those guys) back in the 1960 to refer to the aggressive, low-fi music coming from Detroit, Chicaco, and New York that was a direct sonic counter-point to the radio-friendly, squeaky clean, "hippie dippy" music (Fifth Dimension, Turtles, Sonny and Cher, BJ Thomas, et al) popular at the time.  As with American blues, it was adopted and refined by "post-Mod" Londoners (some would say directed by Malcom McLaren) who gave it much of the subsequent imagery, fashion, and culture surrounding it.  Since then, as with any good genre, it has been reclaimed, lost, split into a dozen sub-genres, buried deep in the earth for years at a time, dug up, recycled, made mainstream, driven back underground, and so forth. This week's guests, Gay Black Republican, while certainly not one of the original punk bands of Indy, are long-time veterans of the Indianapolis music scene and could be argued are the current reigning kings of that scene.  Through six full-length albums and about as many EP's, bootlegs, and live recorded sets, the band has evolved from the garage band ethos to a more refined, intelligent-but-irreverent powerhouse of energy and musicianship.  Next month marks the 20th anniversary of the founding of the band, and as we learn in this interview, they show no signs of letting up or slowing down.  Links Referenced in the Show: Gay Black Republican can be found here:  |   Their latest album, U.S.A. College Rock - Before ‘Indie' or ‘Alternative', College Rock was the most commonly used term for new music existing on the periphery of established trends. The term derives from the student-run radio stations on college campuses of the 1980s, which picked up new waves much faster than the commercial channels. This was at a time when the boundaries between mainstream and underground music were far less porous than today. Bands Featured: The Replacements, Pixies, Hüsker Dü, The Pogues, Dead Kennedy's, Elvis Costello, The House Martins, The Stone Roses, Janes Addiction, Suzzane Vega, Camper Van Beethoven, 10,000 Maniacs, Billy Bragg, Nirvana, The Dukes of Stratosphere, The Call, The Mighty Lemon Drops, The Connells, The Cult, The Colourfield, Flesh For Lulu, The Lucy Show, and Red Hot Chili Peppers.

It's a Left & Leftist Summerslam! 'Tis the season to offer up hot takes, and it doesn't get any hotter than these*. The Leftist does some book depository cosplay, taking dead aim at an office-holding Kennedy. Speaking of dead, Ronnie 40 visits to endorse Biden for President from beyond the veil. Then, After a brief farewell to a real one in the 45th White House, we dive into a few infuriating stories: the Kenosha, WI PD back-shoots a black man (over and over and over and...), and in the resultant demonstrations an aspiring out-of-state agitator canoes a couple protestors. Was he paid by George Soros? The answer will not surprise you. Also unsurprising: racist-crowd-funding a wall on the southern border is not a legitimate undertaking. No shock value is added in discovering that the Trump Labor Relations Board is anti-labor. One can expect the people of Provo, UT will act with stupidity. And guess what? Several of our nation's wealthiest actually profit from a pandemic. *not a guarantee, if you find hotter takes elsewhere then good job you know how to use a web browser Remember to rate and review, and share with your friends! Season 2 Episode 6 happened at a few minutes past midnight on 7 Feb 2020.  We got straight into it with Black Sabbath and Thin Lizzy.  The show was pretty much old school metal for the first half hour before we got a dose of Grunge via that bastion of mirth, cheer, and happiness, Kurt Cobain.   SA bands were represented by Pilgrim South a solid rock band out of Sekunda, I don't know much about them but I will probably do an interview with them when they are in JHB.  Its good to know that there is a rock and roll soul alive and kicking in Mpumalanga.  12th Avenue, one of my favourite SA bands ever, were also featured with a track called Time Bomb.  Alice Cooper's Generation Landslide sounded as fresh as ever, amazing that it's nearly 50 years old.  Iron Maiden took the Midnight 7-Plus slot this week with a track called The Longest Day off their 2006 release ‘A Matter of Life and Death'.  The highlight of the show for me was playing Ozzy Osbourne's new track Under the Graveyard at high volume through the studio speakers.  Ozzy is sounding amazing and that chorus is catchy as hell, you have been warned.  My only regret here is that he hasn't got Zakk Wylde on the album.  No disrespect to Andrew Watt who has done an excellent job of producing the album and playing all the guitar but Zakk would have made a massive contribution I reckon.  Note that Duff McKagan  & Chad Smith from G ‘n' R and the Chillie Peppers provided the rhythm section.  The Punk came a bit later than normal, this week in the form of the Dead Kennedy's with 'Kill the Poor' and then a bit of Green Day.  Another show highlight was hearing Johnathan Martin's brilliant cover of 'Cortez the Killer' back to back with Neil Young doing Pocahontas live off the Weld album. We got back to the heavy stuff with Judas Priest's Hellrider and then a really menacing bit of metal called Walker of the Dark, courtesy of Udo Dirkschneider in his solo outfit U.D.O.  We managed to cram in a last bit of Motörhead and the Foo's and then it was "Cheers" until next week.  The playout song was a little goodbye to Dave Brock a high school friend who sadly passed away this week  RIP Dave. Artists featured this episode:  Thin Lizzy, The Foo Fighters, Ozzy Osbourne, Johnathan Martin, Motörhead, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Nirvana, Pilgrim South, Judas Priest, Baton Rouge, John Frusciante, Alice Cooper, Slash, Green Day, Def Leppard, Volbeat, Neil young, Steelheart, Rush, Rex Brown, Great White, U.D.O., 12th avenue, the Dead Kennedy's

Season 2 Episode 3 went out live at midnight 17 Jan 2020.  The show started with a bit of The Offspring before the traditional Dr Who start-up theme that signals arrival of The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show.  That was just a bit of fun to keep you on your toes, otherwise, it was pretty much a textbook show.  One thing I suggest you do when you listen to the show is Google the lyrics, it's fascinating to see how good they are on so many of these songs.  In the old days you had the lyrics on the album cover, probably why the generation growing up through the '60s, '70s and '80s know all the words to everything,  but actually we are better off now where you can get lyrics for everything while you listen.   The show kicked off with The Sweet's Teenage Rampage and then straight into the mighty Judas Priest.  It would have been remiss of me not to call out the Rock and Roll Hall of Fiasco for their latest travesty of justice so that was done pretty much straight away.  Motley Crue restarted again halfway through the song but you won't really notice because I clipped it out for your listening pleasure.  I do however speak about it, so in the words of one of my high school teachers, “And boys that is why”.  I don't normally edit the show but no-one wants to hear a song twice in a row with so much other good stuff to get to.  The highlight for me was the brutality of Sepultura into the smooth perfection of Gary Moore with Still Got the Blues.  It made me realize Gary Moore and Rory Gallagher would have been the most amazing twin guitar combo ever.  There were so many good moments on this show, ‘(White Man ) In Hammersmith Palais' from The Clash, ‘California Uber Alles' from ‘The Dead Kennedy's' as well as ‘Man in the Box' featuring some great guitar work from Jerry Cantrell.  These were just a few that spring to mind, the whole thing is good.  Finally let's not forget the sheer, power, aggression and rawness of Fokofpolisiekar in their hey-day with ‘Angs Aanval' was sublime.  And then, of course, we did need to pay our respects to the amazing Neil Peart, drummer and lyricist for Canada's greatest band Rush.  Neil sadly passed away on 7 January and we played Spirit of Radio to say cheers, RIP Mr. Neil Peart.   Artists featured included:  Pink Floyd, W.A.S.P, The Clash, Fokofpolisiekar, Stone Sour, Bush, The Sweet, Ozzy Osbourne, Judas Priest, Mötley Crüe, Black Sabbath, UFO, Sepultura, Neil Young, Tesla, Def Leppard, Motörhead, ACDC, The Defiants, Marilyn Manson, Alice in Chains, Gary Moore, Desolation Angels, Rush, The Dead Kennedy's, Nazareth.

Her bliver der skrevet seks forskellige kompositioner. ‘Rage Against The Machine‘, ‘The Dead Kennedy‘ og ‘Primus‘. Det starter en æra for spilmusikken, hvor det at få sin musik

But sometimes real life can be more frightening than any movie will ever be. The deaths on this list are more then just tragic, but also very strange. These are 5 Hollywood murder mysteries. 5. Natalie Wood Known for films like Miracle on 34th Street, Rebel Without a Cause and West Side Story, Natalie Wood was a shining Hollywood star in the 1960’s. She had been starring in movies since she was 4 years old and had grown up in front of the camera. Although there was a minor slump in her career while she was transitioning from a child actress to an adult, she eventually found her momentum again until the fateful day she died on November 29, 1981. 4. Bob Crane Considered as one of Hollywood's biggest murder mysteries, the death of Hogan's Heroes star, Bob Crane still baffles many people today. Crane was a popular sitcom star in the 60s but a decade later his life came to a an end under violent and stange cirumstances. In 1978 he was in Scottsdale acting in a play when he was found bludgeoned to death inside his apartment. The 49-year old actor was severly beaten and an electric cord had been wrapped around his neck. Not long after, sordid details about Crane's personal life began to surface. Apparently, the star collected videotapes and photographs of his various sexual liaisons with women. 3. Jean Spangler On October 7, 1949, Jean Spangler, a beautiful 26-year old dancer, model and bit part actress mysteriously disappeared. Jean was a divorcee who had one child. She left her daughter in the care of her sister-in-law before heading out saying she had to go work on set. However, when she didn't come back the following day, her sister-in-law phoned authorites. When police began the investigation, they discovered that the last person to see her was a store clerk who distinctly remembered her, but After that, they couldn't find a single trace of her. 2. Peter Ivers Best known as an experimental musician, Peter Ivers may not be as well known today but if you were a fan of a show called "New Wave Theatre" in the 80’s then you might have heard of him. His show was a platform for bands like Fear and The Dead Kennedy's. More than a host, Ivers was also a musician. He was a gifted harmonica player and even scored David Lynch's cult classic "Eraserhead." Later on, he opened for Fleetwood Mac and dated film producer, Lucy Fisher, who supervised on films like Jerry Maguire and Men in Black. 1. Jimi Hendrix Michael Jeffery isn't a household name but he was associated with one of the most famous musician that has ever lived – Jimi Hendrix, and Jefferies’ was his manager. And now some say that he was actually directly responsible for the late rockers death. Jeffery was best known in the business for first handling the group The Animals. Even though they gained plenty of success, the band ultimately blamed Jeffery for their demise and breakup. They accused him of overworking them and appropriating their earnings. Those were 5 Hollywood Murder Mysteries Celebrity scandals might be a dime a dozen these days but these Hollywood murder mysteries will most likely endure for many years to come, if not forever.

“People need to look at the Internet as a plantation sharecropper system - Yeah, you got your cotton really cheap but is that how you want society to go forward?” Episode 012: East Bay Ray -  Safe Harbors and Cheap Cotton.  From its infancy in the San Francisco Bay area in the 1970s to today, the enduring legacy of the Dead Kennedys, is due in no small part to its founding member, East Bay Ray.  Ray’s Music, The Oakland Tribune cited ray as penning, “some of the most recognizable and memorable guitar riffs to emerge from the initial West Coast punk movement”, and Ray’s drive have kept the band alive and relevant for more than three decades.   So how does a self described, “middle class band”, one who managed to survive, Napster, The PMRC, and the wrath of local sheriffs survive in age of the internet?  It’s not easy.  As someone who considers himself a modern, “Renaissance Man… someone who thinks with both sides of his brain”, Ray is worried about the future of music.  Since Google purchased YouTube, Ray argues, he has seen local artists in the Bay area’s, “income cut by half.”  He’s seen the Dead Kennedy’s music, - music he wrote, owns and preformed - misused and abused on YouTube; ”Our song, ‘holiday in Cambodia,’ there, a video of just our DK logo and our song playing, and it has I think 14 million “views and that's money for Google is not money for dead Kennedy’s.”   As for the future?  He doesn’t see much hope for another band like the Dead Kennedy’s to break through the noise, “There will be music, but it will be blander - because you need an audience 11 times bigger.” And thanks to the fact that some of the internet giants of the world hide behind the nation’s “Safe Harbor” laws, there isn’t much money there for the musicians in any case. “People need to look at the Internet as a plantation sharecropper system - Yeah, you got your cotton really cheap but is that how you want society to go forward?” Its a fascinating look at the past, present and future of Music, through the eyes of one of the music industry giants.

FeedBack w. Wes Nyle. EP31. Political Skews. 11.12.12This past election has me reminiscing of who I was in my teens. Certainly who I am now is shaped by the music I’m listening to currently. But how much of my views were shaped by artists when I was showing up late to class and smoking cigarettes in the parking lot of my high school. In my early twenties I had good friends of mine tell me that I helped shaped who they were, their style, the music they listened to, political opinions. And I’m sure that’s true because I’m amazing in almost every way. But was it all me? Or were my beliefs molded by artists like Justin Sane of Anti-Flag, and Tim Armstrong of Rancid, then simply regurgitated while sitting in technical theatre class learning nothing.I didn’t come from any type of hardship. Not like the musicians I respected and emulated. I grew up with a dad who taught Government, and Economics and a Mom who remarried a Pharmacist. There was nothing left to be desired, materially. But there is something inside a teen, a fire that can’t be explained or quenched. When I had the time I would spend too much of it at a second hand music shop, being molded the guy that worked there. I can’t remember all the music he introduced me to but I do remember one day before I left he, convinced me I needed to hear Plastic Surgery Disasters by the Dead Kennedy’s. I took it home and sat in front of my stereo, wondering what kind of cruel joke was this that the older guy I trusted with my musical development was playing on me. Jello Biafra’s chipmunk voice blasted my eardrums as I waited for the real singer to jump in at any time. Later on, the lyrics meant more and I thought about who I was and if I was going to turn out like the adults in my life. The track Halloween started me on this path of dress and attitude. I was going to be whoever I wanted to be. As long as I looked and acted like my heroes.I remember going to Wal-Mart and buying a navy blue sweat shirt. I cut it down the middle and buttoned it up with safety pins so I could look like Billy Joe Armstrong in the Green Day poster I had hanging in my room. I cut my hair and spiked it like Matthew Lillard in SLC Punk minus the blue hair die because, well you know, my parents weren’t having that. I learned all the quotes from I Blow Mind’s For A Living: Jellow Biafra’s spoken word, and read it in speech class for an A. I listened to Rage Against the Machine when I skipped class and drove to Chick-Fil-A with my buddy. This was before they were raging against their own machine. I was convinced I was changing the world. There was no question that I completely understood what these bands were fighting for. So I fought with my dad, the high school government teacher about how a socialist society could be great, and how anarchy was a peaceful alternative to democracy. I told everyone to vote for Ralph Nader. And never saw the contradiction in any of it.The summer I graduated I turned eighteen and fought with my dad about not wanting to send in my selective service card. I wasn’t going to potentially be forced to fight for a fascist régime I didn’t believe in. Eventually I sent it in, because I wasn’t going to move to Canada as an alternative either. It’s too cold. Along with that the election was happening and I should have been rushing out to register to vote but, at this point I was to interested in all the other things I could do that were slightly more exciting and debaucherous. By the next election season I was more apathetic to the internal conflicts of the US and instead wanted to make art, write, and listen to others interpretation of the world. The closest I ever came to voting was when someone signed me up to vote under the Green Party while I was walking into Eeyore's Birthday while living in Austin. It wasn’t at that moment but I did later understand that I didn’t know anything about America, or how any of the systems work. Nor did I care. I didn’t vote that year and George W. Bush won his second term. This podcast isn’t a statement. The anti-establishment, anarchist me died when I turned eighteen for some reason. Did big brother win? Or did the thrill of making a difference with my voice die when I turned the appropriate age? Like knowing you can stay up as late as you want once you have your own apartment. I’m not sure. But recently as I listen to the music that shape my teenage mind I feel like maybe I’m more like those heroes than ever before. I embrace my apathy. The more I listen to the cries of that slightly older generation, the more I think that maybe they weren’t trying to warn me of what was happening to me now. But who me and my friends would become if we chased these impossible pursuits, or tried to perpetuate these futile mottos.Turns out all these songs I believed were political… All these songs about the government’s manipulative tendencies… were really just a squeal for understanding from our pears. Well if that’s the case I understand. I understand that frustration of an artist isn’t something an elected official can cure better than a ripping guitar solo and loving fans that admit they are in the same boat.Solidarity – RancidRotten Future – Anti-FlagAnarchy In the U.K. – Sex PistolsHalloween – the Dead Kennedy’sSLC Punk – Look Like A Bum SpeechNo Pride – Green DayTake the Power Back – Rage Against the MachineDie For Oil Suckers – Jello BiafraAmerican Jesus – BadOpen Your Eyes – GoldfingerMotto – Less Than JakePride – No Use For a NameI’m So Bored With The U.S.A. – The Clash

PodTV - Alterativo

Principais Influências da atual formação Cardigans, Stars, Smashing Pumpkins, Los Hermanos, U2, The Mars Volta, Pixies, Cooper Temple Clause, James, Red Hot, Molotov, At the Drive-In, Pearl Jam, Pink Floyd e Manic Street Preachers.
