Wood isn't what it used to be. Virgin lumber is generally less dense and grown faster than wood that was harvested from natural old growth forests. But logging what's left of those old growth forests isn't a sustainable option, so why not reclaim old lumber when buildings are torn down? Until now that process was labour intensive and expensive, but Eric Law and Urban Machine have developed robots that are making reclaimed lumber into the building material of choice, and that might just change the way we build new buildings entirely.Join the Building Good community today:https://www.buildinggood.caLinkedIn

While construction activity is down from its 2022 peak, the reports found a brief contraction in 2023 and 2024 will dissipate by 2025 when growth driven by public sector investment across the provinces will drive employment. Ferriera also noted the numbers were based on existing demands and did not take into account the federal government's recently stated aim to double the number of new homes across Canada as well as dramatically increase electrification through retrofits of existing residential, industrial, commercial, and institutional buildings. Ferriera also noted while the overall picture for construction employment is good, unknown factors such as COVID-19 and the ware in Ukraine adversely affected the economy previously and unforeseen future events could also dampen the economic forecast. Millions of tons of lumber goes to landfills every year. Eric Law is out to change that. Eric and his team at Urban Machine have designed a machine that automates the removal of nails and screws from reclaimed lumber, making that lumber usable again.      Eric explains how he settled into this niche. He spent 20 years working in various parts of the technology and construction industries. He was leading a sustainability initiative when he noticed that steel and concrete get recycled but the lumber was all going to the landfill. What kept it from being reused or recycled? Well. It was the nails, of course.    He approached Andrew Gillies and Alex Thiele about using automated robots and computer vision to address this problem. The three of them decided this was a solution worth pursuing, and they launched Urban Machine.    Here's the process:  Humans take out the big, ugly fasteners. They polish up the remaining fasteners to help the machine spot them. A device resembling a bird beak removes those remaining fasteners. The piece goes through a metal detector to ensure that the piece is clean.   Eric shares about the first few iterations of the machine. After a mishap with the first large stationary model, they decided to make the unit mobile. It is now mounted on a 40' flat bed truck.   Computer vision enables the operator to see a cross-section of the wood and provide several data points not usually available for individual pieces purchased from the lumber yard. The team is working toward the inclusion of a QR code that will share this info with the end user and take them to a website that shares the wood's back story.    Eric explains that their equipment enables them to do extensive examinations of reclaimed glue-lam pieces in order to ensure its structural integrity.    We discuss Urban Machine's business and pricing models. Sometimes they work with owners who want to reuse lumber during a remodeling project. In this case, they receive a dollars-per-board-foot rate to process lumber to be reused onsite. In other cases, they partner with demolition companies and then resell the lumber.    The machine has an impressive design volume of 2.5 million board feet per machine per year. That's 16,000-20,000 board feet or about a truckload a day for each machine.   As the team handles more projects, they're working toward formulas to more accurately estimate the amount of reclaimable lumber in particular types of buildings based on the building's construction and age.   We discuss Urban Machine's future. By 2024 they plan to have 12 trailers ready for different markets around the country. Beyond that? Well, it would take 6,000 trailers to capture 50% of the wood that's thrown away in the US each year.    We discuss the massive sustainability benefits of reducing dependency on virgin lumber that needs to be kiln dried. Then it needs to be trucked across the country. We also touch on the possibility of carbon credits. “Every metropolitan area is a forest for us,” Eric explains.    Eddie asks about how the demolition process needs to change in order for the wood to remain intact enough to be run through the machine.    We wrap up with some speculation about the ripple effects of this kind of reclamation into peripheral businesses for distributing and using reclaimed wood.   Eric's Megaphone Message: We can create a circular economy for wood. And we can do it in a way that doesn't just save money but also reduces environmental impact and includes the back stories and historical connections of wood.   Find Eric Online: LinkedIn - Urban Machine's Website  Find Us Online: BrosPodcast.com - LinkedIn - Youtube - Instagram - Facebook - Eddie's LinkedIn - Tyler's LinkedIn If you enjoy the podcast, please rate us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you listen to us! Nick and Evan talk CFP National Championship, PLL charity boxing match ups and get political while they give deep insight and analysis on the events that unfolded last week (still not a political podcast). They also give their power ranking of the worst lacrosse inventions. (27:27) Former Denver University and Outlaws Hometown Hero and Current Atlas attackman Eric Law joins the Post Game. Eric talks about going to Salisbury, transferring to Denver as a walk-on, being made a middle, then somehow becoming a legend. We get into the DU locker room and night life scene, just how red Coach Tierney's face could actually get, Eric never (ever!) beating Notre Dame or Syracuse and end with some Outlaws and Atlas discussion. While group decision-making is never easy, when the group making decisions is diverse - with some collectivists, some individualists, some direct communicators, others indirect, some top-down, and others bottom-up - it's a mix that regularly leads to misunderstanding, frustration, and communication breakdown! Why is this? How can people who are good at making decisions in their personal lives stumble so often when they try to do it together. We explore this question, and possible solutions,  in this episode with Eric Law, founder of the Kaleidoscope Institute - a respected, wise voice in intercultural ministry. Eric shares with us his insights into what can help diverse groups communicate, plan and make decisions together. In addition Adrian Jacobs, of the Sandy Saulteaux Spiritual Centre, shares with us the Haudenosaunee teaching on the 'two row wampum' - and how it connects to interculturalism.  This episode, the 4th in our Commencing series is a little longer than most - running just over 45 minutes.  [Sorry...had a series of technical problems in publishing this episode. Luke and I caught with former Denver Pioneers Attackman Eric Law in this episode, we talked all things lacrosse in this episode. We went back to Eric's days growing up in Colorado and what got him started in lacrosse, the process for him to go to college and play at D3 Salisbury (MD), a D3 powerhouse, before he left after 1 season to attend and play lacrosse at Denver under legendary head coach Bill Tierney. We talked about some memorable moments in Eric's career at Denver. After Denver, Eric was drafted by the Denver Outlaws of the MLL, with the Outlaws, Eric and his teammates won 2 MLL titles in 2014 and 2016, we discussed those titles and some of the moments he remembers, including playing with lacrosse great, John Grant, Jr. We also discussed Eric's move to the PLL and playing for Atlas, and we talked with Eric how he works to continue to help lacrosse grow, great time talking lacrosse with Eric in this episode!!

Here are links to the authors and resources we mentioned in this episode: Geert Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions Theory (Wikipedia has a pretty good overview) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hofstede%27s_cultural_dimensions_theory White Supremacy Culture – Tema Okun (two similar versions) http://www.cwsworkshop.org/PARC_site_B/dr-culture.html and http://dismantlingracism.org/Dismantling_Racism/liNKs_files/whitesupcul09.pdf The White Ladder - Tema Okun http://www.cwsworkshop.org/pdfs/CARC/White_Identity/4_Life_Long_Journey.PDF Tema Okun The Emperor Has No Clothes What is White Supremacy? by Elizabeth "Betita" Martinez The Culture of White Supremacy by Sharon Martinas A few quick tips for countering oppression ~ Don't make and/or Challenge your assumptions. Eric Law talks about how ~ Ask Questions - Demonstrate “Holy Curiosity” ~ Be mindful of your (white, male, economic, relational, educated, accredited, clergy, professional, hetero, cis, "been around for forever", etc.) privilege in any given interaction and/or space and think about how to best equalize the power dynamic. ~ Consider that everyone has more identities (and history) than you're aware of. No one is just a race + gender expression + orientation. Our identities are infinite. ~ Welcome discomfort. There's so much more opportunity there. ~ Be mindful of how much space you claim, and what that might mean for others. ~ Don't touch people (or things) without explicit consent. Not everyone responds to touch the same way, not all "friendly" touch is appropriate. ~ Be mindful of your language and that there may be someone within earshot to whom it may be exclusionary/hurtful. ~ Try to Listen more than you speak. ~ When you speak, speak (only) for yourself (unless requested to speak for a group). ~ Don't make a member of a marginalized group responsible for your education about issues of marginalization and oppression. Seek out those allied people and groups (like ARE) dedicated to helping with that. ~ Be aware that your intent will not always = the impact of your words & actions. ~ Try not to take things personally. ~ Be open to learning. ~ Exercise humility. ~ Remember that not everyone has the same information! Share respectfully if you have the opportunity.
