At this week's Round Table, Emily, Hannah and Skyla spoke with Sasha Simon and Rhana Hashemi about harm-reduction based drug education. As the Founder and Principal Consultant at Sasha Simon Consulting, Sasha provides training, technical assistance and consulting services to youth-serving professionals transitioning away from punitive, abstinence-based drug education and policies and towards inclusive, restorative, and health-based structures that support the whole child and their community. Rhana is a Bay Area-based drug educator, a national expert in youth overdose prevention and harm reduction, and a doctoral student in Social Psychology at Stanford. She founded an educational organization called Know Drugs, which works to advance evidence-based prevention and harm reduction drug education for youth to prevent overdoses and risky drug use. Sasha advocates extensively on issues related to teens and drug use, sexuality and health, adultism, and BIPOC mental health, building intergenerational coalitions and collaborative networks to empower youth as advocates to challenge political issues that directly impact them and to deliver innovative, cross-sector approaches to public health and education. Sasha also co-founded the Fierce Leadership for Youth Academy, a college prep non-profit aiming to remove financial barriers to higher learning for first-gen college students of color. Rhana translates scientific research and uplifts community youth voices in the design and development of prevention messaging. She was a key contributor to Safety First, the nation's first harm reduction-based drug education curriculum, and has piloted the program across several Bay Area schools. Her work has been featured by major news outlets such as the NY Times, TIMES Magazine, and NBC's Today Show. After learning about their fascinating backgrounds, we dug into how they've co-designed, piloted, and evaluated Safety First programs WITH teachers and students, which is super inspiring. We also discussed recently updated drug education laws in Illinois and Texas, honing in on the policy changes since the fentanyl overdose crisis. Sasha and Rhana put forth a call to action based on everything that they've learned and experienced on how YOU can adopt harm reduction-based approaches to drug education in your community. Today’s guest is Susan Scott, the founder of Fierce, a TedX speaker, author of best-selling books Fierce Conversations and Fierce Leadership. Most people understand the importance of having good conversations but most are unaware of how lousy they actually are at having them. Susan explains how her system to have fierce conversations facilitates increased productivity, problem solving, and builds relationships and trust. Susan shares how she codified her content to make it teachable with consistent outcomes regardless of if it is taught by an internal or external facilitator. During the last year of the pandemic Susan has had unprecedented digital innovation! She shares how her team has developed a client facing app, realistic 3d simulations that can be customized to specific scenarios, and soon a digital version of the training that will not require a facilitator. If you struggle to have real conversations, productive meetings, and helpful feedback this episode might be the eye opener you need. Three Key Takeaways: · Thought Leaders need to ensure their conversations are impactful. The topic, the manner it is discussed, and who is invited to the conversation can all affect the outcome for better or worse. · When creating thought leadership consider that organizations might want you to train their trainers and not have you send in a facilitator. · Being able to scale your thought leadership to a digital platform is a must.

The TalentGrow Show: Grow Your Leadership and Communication Skills
Do you invite people to be open with you, and to push back on your thoughts and ideas? And when you have “fierce” conversations, do you deepen your connection or push people away as a result? This week on the TalentGrow Show, we’re rebroadcasting Halelly’s conversation with Susan Scott, best-selling author and leadership development architect, to explain what fierce conversations are and why we NEED to have more of them. Susan shares a common obstacle we all face when having these types of conversations – both at work in our personal lives – and how to overcome it. She also talks about how to be open and more transparent and invite this kind of openness from others (and what some of us might be doing to hinder that). Susan and Halelly explore why she thinks careful conversations are almost always failed conversations and the concept of radical transparency, which Susan advocates, and the difference between fierce leaders and other leaders. And of course, Susan shares one actionable suggestion that will help you upgrade your leadership and will make a HUGE difference in the quality of your conversations and your relationships. You should really begin doing it, today! Listen and don’t forget to share with others. In today’s episode, Pastor Carter and Pastor Jamie Wamsley discuss the theology of the Kingdom and how leaders can access its full resources, beyond just the basics. Pastor Jamie currently serves as Associate Senior Pastor at The Chapel, a multi-site church in Chicagoland, where he has been on staff for 23 years.Ministry of Jesus // When ministry gets busy and you’re drawing more and more people, it can feel like you’re on a gerbil wheel. Externally one can see God is at work, but internally you can feel exhausted and spent. John Wimber, in his book The Way In is the Way On, writes ‘All ministry is the ministry of Jesus’. Does this ring true for your ministry, does it reflect the ministry of Jesus, what Jesus did? After being confronted with this question, Pastor Jamie reached a crossroads, he asked God, “Have I gotten it all wrong?” God led him in a process of re-examining everything he believed, Biblically about his faith, which led to a complete overhaul of his Christianity. What does integrity mean to you? Why is integrity important? And how do your business systems and your team members support the integrity of your business? These are some important considerations that determine the success of our businesses. Today Dr. Sabrina interviews Andre Ong. Integrity is key to building trust in today’s business environment. While many of us entrepreneurs are mindful of our own integrity, we may not be paying enough attention to the important role our systems and team members have in supporting the integrity of our company. Gaps in our systems can inadvertently undermine our company’s integrity with our top clients and customers. Andre is a huge advocate for sharing The Pumpkin Plan and Profit First with entrepreneurs. Dr. Sabrina asks Andre to reflect on what he’d have done differently if he’d been introduced to these two books early on as an entrepreneur. Andre shares some hard-hitting school of hard knocks lessons from his experience. Andre and Sabrina also discuss what it's like to partner with your spouse in running your business, and what Andre has learned that enables his wife and him to work together successfully. Tune in now, to hear Andre's words of wisdom. Andre Ong is a serial entrepreneur with no hope of breaking the habit. He and his wife, Angela, have worked together since 2001 when he offered to help her pass her Real Estate exam because he needed an angle to date her. They were married in 2002. Having both been previously married, Andre now has four children, technically step-children, but he's not a very technical sort of guy. He also has seven grandchildren, ranging in age from four months to thirteen years. Past endeavors include managing foreclosures, managing and supervising maintenance for rental property, and working with real estate investors (which is sort of like being an agent with Men in Black). He was a military chaplain while working into financial services, where he currently focuses his energy, but because of compliance, we can’t say much more than that. He and Angela also founded a non-profit to work with Service members and autistic children (they have an autistic grandson) along with Diverse Management Solutions, a company that allows them to provide services and wisdom to other entrepreneurs. He and Angela have fully gutted and renovated 3 homes. The first one was renovated while they slept in a tent on the deck for a few months. He’s also a horseman and has incorporated equine assisted learning as part of his work with Service members. Oh, and he has 2 masters degrees. So he’s a nerd, too. He brings together a scholarly nature (inherited from his father, a nuclear and chemical engineer) with his experience in the trades and business to the people he assists today. Show Highlights: Andre is a huge fan of Profit First and Pumpkin Plan and he gives these books out at every opportunity, to help other entrepreneurs. Andre gives some tips for making a husband and wife team work well. Andre defines integrity. The fine line between personal and professional integrity is becoming blurred in our culture, especially with how much social media can impact a person's employment. Being mindful of the way that your personal life impacts your business. Andre shares some thoughts about how our business systems and processes demonstrate integrity. The image that you portray from the beginning to the end in your business, and even the words that you choose, have to be consistent. Trust is the foundation of what we're trying to get to in our business. And consistency builds trust. Being mindful of your clients' low points and pulling them through. Dr. Sabrina shares some powerful questions from the book Never Lose A Customer Again, by Joey Coleman. Using an action plan, and regular check-ins, to keep your goals in sight. Andre talks about the process of developing your process. The difference between the official truth and ground truth. Why you should 're-onboard', or start over, with your current clients every two years. The importance of developing your own character, and that of your employees. Coaches also need coaching. Dr. Sabrina explains her concept of 'Veggies First'. Holding people able, rather than accountable. Andre talks about his non-profit, and equine-assisted learning. Andre discusses his other non-profit company, Diverse Management Solutions, which provides services and wisdom to other entrepreneurs. What Andre would have done differently, had he known about Profit First and Pumpkin Planning when he first started his business. Most teams aren't having the conversations they need to. We consistently fail to challenge each other, engage in robust dialogue and have the courageous, honest discussions we need to achieve our collective potential. Along with reading books for you, I've also taken the hard work out of finding new topics In these 2-3 minute 'minisodes' I'll share the team coaching question I took from this week's book for you to use in your own team. About the Author Known for her bold yet practical approach to executive coaching and leadership development, Susan Scott has been challenging people to say the things that are hard to say for over two decades. Susan founded Fierce in 2001 after 13 years leading CEO think tanks, more than 10,000 hours of conversations with senior executives, and one epiphany: While no single conversation is guaranteed to change the trajectory of a career, a business, a marriage, or a life—any single conversation can. Susan continues to share her expertise with clients through her keynote presentations, and award-winning books. Source: https://fierceinc.com/about/leadership About the Book This book is a big literary kick in the ass for anyone who is a manager or leader of others. It shines a painful light on the crappy ‘best practices’ that have become the norm in organisations (I’m looking at you, feedback sandwich) and the apathy around what we willingly accept. It’s practical – providing frameworks, methods, conversation starters and perspectives on how teams can work better through powerful, clear, open conversations. I took copious notes through the book and have used some of the ideas in client workshops and with teams. My biggest take away was the overriding concept that the biggest problems will be from the conversations you didn’t have. BIG IDEA 1 (2:21) - Do real conversations properly. See the other person. This might mean opening up a conversation about something that everyone knows but nobody talks about (the proverbial elephant). Bringing the real issues to the table and talk about it to create a shared language. One of the ways Susan mentioned in the book about creating shared language is through the ‘Beach Ball’ framework. Each person shares their view of the world, feedback or input about a situation from their ‘stripe’ of the beachball. This helps everyone understand what others see from their stripe and acknowledge it. Two important questions that you can use with your team to uncover some things that need to be said - ‘What do you need from this team that you are not getting?’ and - ‘What can you contribute to this team that you’re not contributing?’. This is about what’s holding people back from bringing their best to the team. BIG IDEA 2 (5:12) - Lookout for your DNA. This is about finding your fingerprints on the things that have gone wrong and asking yourself how you contributed to this situation. This is being visibly accountable to your own action and not searching for who is to blame. This is important in creating a high performing team by asking your team questions that will bring out their sense of self-accountability. YOU are the culture and what you do, and the examples you set, influence the rest of the culture in the organisation. Another way to look for your fingerprints is to look into your team’s behavior and figure out what you might have contributed to that behavior (or lack of behavior). BIG IDEA 3 (8:23) - Engage and be brave. This idea is about stepping up to true leadership. All of the big ideas won’t work unless you make it happen. True leadership involves being both brave and engaged. Apathy exists in a lot of organisations today, where average performance is acceptable and most leaders forget (or are ‘too busy’) to step up. Leaders should have the ability (the ‘squid eye’) to see behaviors and toxicity as signs of dysfunction and use these tells as the impetus to take action. Bruce Love has guided the development of a performance-focussed coaching culture in a call centre environment in the aviation industry, with an impact on operational measures and employee engagement. This has been part of a business transformation program that commenced over three years ago. Being involved up front in redefining the organisation structure and recruitment for key positions was an opportunity to create the foundations for a coaching culture. Bruce discusses what a coaching culture looks like, drawing on his background in the arts. He outlines how his Capability team developed and sustains coaching mindset, skills and behaviours across the organisation.
