Sometimes we resort to “amateur psychology” when an area of our life isn't going the way we'd like. It's natural to ask WHY and look for answers that often lead to some version of “What's wrong with me?” What if you could replace that thinking with a new system focused on actions that explore possibilities? In this episode, host Meredith Bell discussed these ideas and many others from The Power of Systems with Trevor Timbeck, who co-authored the book with Steve Chandler. You'll hear about Trevor's experiences that led to the realization that everything in life can be viewed as a system. Trevor also shares the system he and Steve created for writing their book that made the process fun and energizing for both of them. You'll learn two simple questions to ask when evaluating a current system, and you may feel a sense of freedom in hearing how easy it is to start playing with a new one. Trevor has thought deeply about the power of systems, and his brilliance shines through in this conversation. Be prepared to take notes and listen to this episode more than once. There are many thought-provoking insights.About the Guest: Trevor is a coach and author who lives and plays at the intersection of Love, Language and Leadership. When I was an agency employee, I admittedly hated being told what to do or how to do it. So naturally, systems and processes really rubbed me the wrong way. Now, as an agency owner, I've learned to embrace the same systems and processes I used to rebel against because I know they help me run my agency better. Despite how constricting they can feel at first, they're there to help you get a zoomed-out look at how your agency is running and collect data on how to make strategic improvements. For Misty Larkins, systems and processes have really helped her grow and scale her agency from 4 employees, to just over 20. This week, she's joining us to share how she and her team started documenting systems and processes from ground zero to get them the well-oiled machine they have today. Even if you hate the idea of systems and processes, they can really be helpful in the case that you lose a top employee or have someone essential out sick for a month or two. So join us to discover what Misty learned about establishing systems and processes in her agency and how we can do it, too. A big thank you to our podcast's presenting sponsor, White Label IQ. They're an amazing resource for agencies who want to outsource their design, dev, or PPC work at wholesale prices. Check out their special offer (10 free hours!) for podcast listeners here. What You Will Learn in This Episode: What it looks like when you have no documentation of systems and processes Starting to define your processes from ground zero Implementing tools and project management software after establishing a baseline Having a person or team take ownership of documentation Making changes stick with your team Knowing when the established systems and processes are scalable Balancing the desire to be creative and innovative with following systems and processes Setting expectations about what success looks like in the agency Creating an environment for employees to learn and grow

In this episode I talk to Houda Boulahbel about her journey towards finding ways of dealing with complex projects. For people who are new to this area there is always the difficulty of where do you start when the problems that you see are complex and the systems methods take time to master? It all feels overwhelming. Houda has founded the Institute for Systems Intelligence which places a systems mindset before using a toolset, and this is important in helping people to have the right approach before they begin to apply tools. We talk about the importance of presenting a situation in the right way and that storytelling is a good approach to connect people and to get beyond the barriers so that we can see different perspectives and different views on the world. The Institute for Systems Intelligence has just been launched and is an exciting new approach to dealing with complexity.www.ifsi.uk

Boon Yew Chew is senior principal UX designer at Elsevier and an IxDA local leader and board alumn. He will be a speaker at the upcoming 2023 Enterprise UX Conference on June 6th and 7th, delivering a session on “Making Sense of Systems – and Using Systems to Make Sense of the Enterprise.” Systems thinking can seem abstract and theoretical, but Boon reveals some unexpected ways that systems thinking can have a profound impact on individuals and relationships within organizations. Who knew that systems thinking could be an emotional intelligence tool? Lou and Boon begin today's episode by discussing the history of systems thinking and how it developed in the ‘40s and ‘50s, mostly within scientific communities, and grew into other fields and disciplines. It offered a new way of thinking about how things develop and change over time. Boon goes on to describe his path into systems thinking and how, with its holistic, big-picture perspective, there is little room for blaming individuals when problems are viewed through a systems thinking lens. A system can give context to the behavior or clashes within an organization and alleviate frustration. Believe it or not, systems thinking can be a relationally lubricating tool. Systems thinking can help us answer the following: • Where do I fit? • Where do the people I'm serving, working with, developing with, and creating for fit within the system? • How is the organization I'm part of itself part of a bigger system? A summary of Boon's insights: • Systems thinking helps us understand context, empathize, and understand other people and the context they work in • Systems thinking provides a visual language that other people can learn from • Language can help reveal not just problems, but how problems relate to each other even when they may not seem connected • Systems thinking is a tool that can help with prioritization What you'll learn from this episode The history of systems thinking, especially how it first developed within scientific communities The differences between systems and design thinking How systems thinking can reduce finger-pointing and relational conflict Why it's best to embrace messy differences as part of the process How to bring systems thinking into the workplace without confusing or alienating others Quick Reference Guide [0:00:12] Introduction of Boon Yew Chew [0:02:31] System thinking versus design thinking [0:04:44] The history of systems thinking [0:08:51] Being trained in one framework and finding it incomplete in the real world [0:10:32] Boon explains how he navigated towards systems thinking [0:16:12] When you feel like your goals are clashing with those of others in the organization [0:19:08] On labels, understanding, reducing friction, and acceptance [0:22:16] Enterprise UX 2023 is back! Guest: Amit Dogra, President and COO of tru Independence. tru offers an open architecture platform that provides a full suite of services that advisors need to manage and grow their business effectively. In a Nutshell: In 2022, I crunched the numbers from Charles Schwab's 2022 RIA Benchmarking Study and spotted an alarming trend: net organic revenue growth is almost non-existent in our industry. Solving that problem isn't just a matter of running a better marketing campaign or asking clients for more referrals. It requires an understanding that every facet of your organization is interconnected and must be thoughtfully designed to support and reinforce your ultimate aim. Amit Dogra and I discuss: Six specific areas that leaders need to focus on to build a highly functional, growth-minded firm. The relationship between total client experience and organic growth. Using your Why Story to enhance your culture and deepen your connection to employees and clients. The question tru Independence is asking itself as it redefines its purpose. How leaders and entrepreneurs should think about their responsibilities when it comes to driving growth. Why it's worth investing in relationships even if there isn't a direct “dollars and cents” ROI. Why Amit believes advisor technology is heading toward what he calls “experience as a service” that's part of a “single source code” instead of best of breed or integrated but separate applications. Building excellent service around your team's unique skillsets. How Amit fosters a curious spirit that helps him see the big picture and connect some surprising dots. Resources Related to This Episode Elliot Weissbluth on building $30 billion RIA HighTower Amit chuckled when I mentioned Elliot's habit of “firing” himself at the end of every year — turns out he encouraged people who worked for him to do the same! Elliot Weissbluth on management: Fire yourself every year I dug into Elliot's methods and philosophy a little deeper in this article I wrote for InvestmentNews. Deconstructing Amazon's Massive Growth by Working Backwards with Bill Carr Amit is an admirer of Amazon's leadership principles, and I talked to one of the company's key executives about the insights, stories, and secrets that propelled Amazon to the top. Building an Interconnected Technology Future Ainslie Simmonds, President of Pershing X, talked to me about how an interconnected suite of financial applications could help advisors spend more time doing what they do best: delivering human-to-human interactions. The Digital Money Advisor Podcast Amit says you don't have to believe in Bitcoin. But you do have to have an informed opinion when your clients come to you with questions. In this year-long podcast series, I talked to leading thinkers in the crypto space.
