Deconstructing Disney

Episode SummaryUnlike its eponymous protagonist, Hercules (1997) is more “zero” than “hero.” Erin and Rachel discuss the film's rampant misogyny and obnoxious product placement. Compelling vocal performances and soaring musical numbers–the last of Alan Menken's contributions during the Disney Renaissance–can't rescue this box office disappointment from the River of Death. Much like Achilles, it just doesn't go the distance. Episode BibliographyCallaway, T. (2012, August 1). Susan Egan: Belle, Meg, Glamour and Goop - Part 2. The Mouse Castle. Broadway's Jasmine, Courtney Reed, joins David for this episode of "E-Ticket to Broadway" for a thrilling chase through her Disney life. Courtney describes how as a child she was obsessed with the Renaissance of Disney animated films, specifically watching "The Lion King," "Beauty and the Beast," "The Little Mermaid," and, coincidentally, "Aladdin"; and how she loved Jasmine from a young age--for she was iconic, and also seeing that kind of representation in a Disney film had an enormous, important impact on her life. Listen as Courtney recalls her first trip to Walt Disney World in college, and having the absolutely best time--enjoying those Mickey Waffles (iconic) and being in total awe of walking down Main Street to see Cinderella Castle (truly, Courtney could be a travel agent, she has such a wonderful point of view of why going to the Disney Theme Parks is so magical and...iconic). Of course she and David talk about her journey of bringing Jasmine to the Broadway stage--fan girling when she met "Jasmine in real life" (Linda Larkin, the voice from the film), flying on the Magic Carpet for the first time, and working with the original voice of Jafar (and former "E-Ticket to Broadway" guest) Jonathan Freeman. Courtney shares her first trip to Disneyland, when she learned that she prefers the charm of the OG Park--which involved going to Club 33, loving Peter Pan's Flight & Radiator Springs Racers, meeting Aladdin & Jasmine, and spending the day with the one and only Susan Egan! Play along as Courtney and David play "These Palace Walls," a game involving the Disney Castles across the world. Why yes, this is HOME plate! In a very fun conversation, Tony nominee Susan Egan joins us in The Batter's Box for Episode 84! Egan has authored a phenomenal legacy in both the Broadway and Disney universe having originated the role of Belle in the Broadway production of Beauty and the Beast, and then brought the beloved Megara to life in the hit animated classic Hercules. This fall, she's rejoining her Disney family with an all-new concert series titled Disney Princess: The Concert as part of the franchise's "Ultimate Princess Celebration," that's currently running through 2022. This week, Egan joins host Al Malafronte to tell some of the amazing stories surrounding her biggest homeruns as a performer. "Timon turned out to be my Father." Krysta Rodriguez (In the Heights, The Addams Family, A Chorus Line, "Smash") is a true Disneyland fan--she grew up with the Park in her backyard, and distinctly remembers feeling the magic radiating from the parking lot as a kid. On this episode of "E-Ticket to Broadway," Krysta and David discuss their love for Walt's Park, and Krysta shares how Disney intersected with her childhood--from using her allowance to buy one souvenir at the Parks (usually a figurine to add to her collection, and not Pirates' gold like she really wanted), to celebrating Thanksgiving at Walt Disney World when she was six years old, to loving "The Little Mermaid" so much that in addition to performing the role wherever and whenever she could, she dressed as Ariel for three different Halloweens in a row. Krysta dives into her love of the Disney movies of the 1960's and 70's (especially "101 Dalmatians"), and well as the food and snacks of the Disney Parks (especially those frozen bananas). Listen as Krysta shares her favorite stories of working with Julie Andrews and going to Disneyland with her, and playing Meg in Hercules in New York City while having Susan Egan as a mentor. Admittedly, Krysta shares that she "got in trouble at Disneyland like kids do at the mall" and shares a fun story of Tinkerbell's flight during the fireworks--something Wednesday Addams may also love. This episode features the game "Pulled in a New Disney Direction" in which Krysta needs to determine which ride or attraction David is referencing that is based on the guests going in a new direction; and they share their mutual love of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, miniatures in the Parks, and Fantasmic. Should you go on a "First Date" at Disneyland? Listen as Krysta shares all! My guest this week is saxophonist, clarinetist, flautist, composer, and arranger Joe Di Fiore. Mr. Di Fiore is a freelance musician in the Los Angeles area, performing as a multi-instrumental and multi-genre artist, with experience as swing band musician, Broadway musician, recording artist, and classical musician. He has had the pleasure of performing and recording alongside artists such as Rod Stewart, Matthew Morrison, Susan Egan, and Clay Jenkins. Mr. Di Fiore is also the lead saxophonist of the Glenn Miller Orchestra, with whom he toured Australia and Hawaii, most recently in 2017. In addition to his performance and recording ventures, he has just released his album, Out of the Woods, a classical music album which he produced himself and in which he performs as a multi-instrumentalist. The question of the week is, "How can classical musicians create opportunities for themselves?" Joe and I discuss how changes in the world have affected the field of classical music, how barriers between genres are slowly coming down, what it's like working as a multi-instrumentalist, how musicians can cultivate an online presence, and his new album, Out of the Woods. You can find out more about Joe on his website, joedifiore.com, or on Instagram @joedifioremusic. His album, Out of the Woods, can be found on Spotify.

We Want The D is back after our week off, and ready to finish off 2015 with Disney's animated film that defines the all-American hero: Hercules. Sure, he may be based on a Greek myth, but that doesn't stop our beloved House of Mouse from turning him into an icon of athleticism and can-do spirit with his own brand of energy drink and sneakers, complete with backing gospel chorus. The question is - do Vicky, Nolan and Jill let a bit of anachronism and cultural co-option get in the way of having a good time with this brightly coloured mid-90s palate cleanser? Or maybe we can just distract ourselves with James Woods' stellar turn as Hades, or Susan Egan's heavily sexualized Meg. We hope all you D Lovers out there have a wonderful New Year, and rest assured we will Go The Distance just like Wonder Boy and his rippling pectorals to bring you more D in 2016!
