They discuss her recent speaking engagement at the Young Women's Leadership Summit in San Antonio and her breakout session on fighting child exploitation. They also touch on her experience as a senior producer on the reboot of America's Most Wanted and the challenges of creating a show that focuses on fugitives involved in crimes against children. The conversation then delves into the topics of child exploitation, human trafficking, and the importance of addressing these issues. Francie emphasizes the need for resources and action to combat child sexual abuse and child pornography. The discussion also touches on the age of consent and the messaging surrounding these crimes. In this conversation, Francey Hakes discusses her journey from law school to becoming a prosecutor and testifying before Congress. She also shares some of the best and worst cases she has worked on, including a horrific case of child abuse and a story about an athlete transitioning from college sports to professional sports. Hakes also mentions her current projects, including a podcast about sports scandals and her work as a legal analyst on TV.
Three years ago, in episode 69, I told you the story of six-year-old Corey Micciolo, whose mother fought for months to save her son from his abusive father. Despite her pleas to New Jersey's Division of Child Protection and Permanency and the family court system, Christopher Gregor retained primary custody of Corey. On March 20, 2021, surveillance cameras in the gym at Christopher's apartment complex captured horrific footage of Christopher forcing Corey to run on a treadmill, causing him to fall repeatedly. Less than two weeks later, Corey died in the emergency room with a tear to his heart caused by blunt force trauma. Christopher Gregor's trial is currently taking place in Ocean County Court. In this episode, I had the honor of discussing this disturbing case with two former prosecutors who also happen to be podcasters I've deeply admired for years: Jim Clemente and Francey Hakes of Best Case, Worst Case. The relationship between prosecutors and law enforcement is crucial to success. Nothing goes perfectly in a criminal trial; something crazy always happens. Trust is important so that whatever happens can be corrected in the run-up or during the trial itself. While law enforcement and prosecutors sometimes disagree, they are on the same team. When a relationship is developed between prosecutors and local and federal agents, they feel like they can call on each other for advice. If an agent is on a scene or going to be involved in an arrest and something unusual happens, the agent can call a prosecutor and ask how that would impact the prosecution later. That collaboration is critical on so many levels.
Jimmy Smith is joined by two special guests as he goes over the ins and outs of the Cain Velasquez case with TV personality, Jenn Brown, and former prosecutor, Francey Hakes, who have released an audio series on Audible titled 'Breaking Justice: The Cain Velasquez story' (0:31). Plus, RJ Clifford and Din Thomas catch up with newly crowned PFL featherweight champ, Brendan Loughnane to discuss the million dollar prize, beef with Charles Rosa, and plans for the 2023 season on MMA Today (25:04).
