For our final episode of 2022, join us as we talk with retired New Hampshire Fish & Game Lieutenant, Wayne Saunders and Major Jim Juneau. Together, they have over 45 years of service in the name of conservation. Their paths first crossed before Jim was even sworn in and Wayne was facing what could arguably be his worst day in law enforcement. In 1997, after the suspect had already killed four people, including two state troopers and a local judge, Wayne took pursuit across state lines in what would eventually land him in the hospital. After 23 years and moving through the ranks as an officer, sergeant, lieutenant, and the president of the Conservation Officer Relief Association, Wayne decided to retire to enjoy time with family. That wasn't the end of his career though as he now hosts the podcast Wardens Watch and shares the stories of other conservation officers across the country.Jim retired after 22 years as the Assistant Chief of Law Enforcement and served in many different roles as he made his way through his career. Some of those notable positions were on the Dive Team, Advanced Search and Rescue, and also an instructor for the Defense Tactics. After some time off to enjoy retirement, Jim has gone back to work for the state, but gives most of his time to HHO and helping with Trout Unlimited.HHO is proud to serve alongside those who preserve our greatest asset through conservation and ensuring those we serve will always have a place to turn to in the outdoors.

What could be harder than looking for a needle in a haystack? Probably retrieving a ring from a river. But against all odds, divers with the Cambridge Fire Department managed to fish a Chicago woman's diamond ring from the Charles River after it tumbled into the water while she and her husband were relaxing at a yacht club. Lynn Andrews told WCVB-TV she had removed the ring so she could apply sunscreen and placed it in her husband's shirt pocket for safekeeping. But it was a hot day, and when he took off his shirt to cool off with a quick swim, the ring fell in the river. "I said a bad word, and then I took a deep breath, and then I said, ‘Everything's going to be fine,'” her husband, Ninos Andrews, told WBZ-TV. Andrews “was obviously quite distraught,” the fire department said on its Facebook page. The couple alerted a dive team that was patrolling the river, and within five minutes of searching, firefighter Jeremy Marrache located the ring and returned it to its “very relieved and excited” owner, the department said in its post. “They all had wives, and they all knew how important this was and how sentimental it was to us,” Lynn Andrews said. Fortunately, Marrache said, the ring lay at an angle that caused the diamond to shimmer as he shined his flashlight over the silty bottom of the river. “We have open communications via our mask. So when I said I found it, the person attending us relayed that message, so I could hear everybody cheering,” he told WBZ. “This is an amazing example of using our training for public service and a terrific opportunity for the dive team and marine unit members to practice working together,” fire Lt. Stephen Capuccio said in a statement. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Born and raised in Indiana, Stephanie did not dive as a kid but she moved to Florida from Indianapolis in 1997 and joined the dive team a few years later. She’s a search and rescue diver, and most of her work takes place in Florida’s lakes and canals. Every one of her 300 dives has been in ‘dark, black nasty water’ and she works with her eyes closed. Oh, and she encounters ‘gators – in the dark – plus aggressive, venomous snakes like the water moccasin or cottonmouth viper, which has a potentially fatal bite. You think you’re tough?

In the same way that Star Trek portrays a future of universal acceptance and humankind's exploration of space, the Roddenberry Dive Team is a real world effort to share the diversity of our planet and to educate, explore and preserve our Earth's oceans for future generations. Roddenberry Dive Team is committed to the promotion of these ideals through safe diving activities; they are passionate about incorporating the philanthropic messages embedded in Star Trek into real world experiences for divers and non-divers around the world. Rodenberry Dive Team is committed to carrying on the legacy of optimism that was handed down to us by Gene Roddenberry. The Roddenberry Dive Team is made up of people just like you from all across the world, divers and non-divers alike who not only have an interest in ocean exploration and recreation but also a love for the vision and optimism that was handed down by Gene Roddenberry. The Roddenberry Dive Team was founded by Eugene “Rod” Roddenberry, son of Gene Roddenberry and Majel Barrett Roddenberry. It is Rod's love of diving, exploration and the oceans that sparked the idea of the Roddenberry Dive Team. In his own words: “I have found the world beneath the sea to be one of the most exotic and magical places on Earth. For me, diving is a unique experience that quenches my thirst for adventure and discovery.“
