POPULARITY
It was impromptu, and it was fun. It was completely unrehearsed, and it rambled in places (when I was unable to hold the microphone). This episode holds some wonderful gems of free thinking. This is Sauna Talk, and this is what I love about Sauna Talk. Like good sauna, Sauna Talk has few rules. This was the spirit at this fireside chat at the West Coast Sauna Summit. While some sauna'ed and others slept, most of the attendees, 25-30 of us came together for fireside chat Sauna Talk. It was later in the evening on night #2. Imagine seven or so mobile saunas deployed lakeside, just outside the high ceiling gathering room at the Loon Lake retreat centre, nested in the UBC Malcolm Knapp Research Forest. And Co-producer Valterri calling the session together in his Finnish accent: “ok, everybody, let's gather our chairs around in a circle. Let's Sauna Talk.” Oh, man, this is my kind of conference. These are my kind of people, and we get into my kind of thinking and conversing. By this time in the gathering, we had become quite comfortable with each other. A lot of the formal presentations were behind us. Many of the formalities of reading name tags and polite introductions well in the rear view mirrors. The Fireside chat Some sat with their sauna sandals on, some sat barefoot. Others in bathrobes or a towel wrapped around them. We gather for Sauna Talk, after all. New connections and new friendships were alchemized at the West Coast Sauna Summit, and I hope, as you listen along, that this episode brings some of that goodness and spirit, wherever you may be tuning in. One final note before I turn this over. A huge thank you to Valterri and Linda for not only putting together a great event, and bringing together a wonderful group of thermal enthusiasts, but for helping to create a vibe of “oneness.” Like a resonating, penetrating, satisfying wave of löyly, their relaxed demeanor, positive energy, and spirit of inclusion for all of us in attendance enveloped all of us, equally, together. I really enjoy the West Coast Sauna Culture. No gatekeeping. Beautiful nature. Cold lakes, open, collaborative thinking. The rising sauna tide lifts all boats. This is how sauna culture can exist, and I'll do all I can to help share the spirit created by Linda and Valterri, wherever good sauna may take me. So, without further ado, let's welcome many of the attendees from the West Coast Sauna Summit to .. Sauna Talk.

Writer and Director Ansel Faraj discovered filmmaker stardom at the age of 20 with his professional debut film Doctor Mabuse. Since then he has kept busy with genre hits such as Loon Lake which is based on the Minnesota legend of Mary Jane the Witch. Legend has it if you cross her grave three times unfortunate events will likely occur. While Ansel has found success, he warns fledgling filmmakers the industry is not all pomp and glamour. Send us a Text Message. This week on the Montana Outdoor Podcast your host Downrigger Dale talks with FWP Fisheries Biologist Brian Stephens about an incredible chain of lakes in Northwest Montana. These lakes are stunning in appearance and cover approximately 3,000 acres and stretch over 20 miles along Highway 2, halfway between Kalispell and Libby. This includes an extensive State Park that includes shoreline access to 18 lakes including McGregor Lake, Little McGregor Lake, Lower Thompson Lake, Middle Thompson Lake, Upper Thompson Lake, Horseshoe Lake and Loon Lake. Depending on which lake you fish you will find all kinds of different fish, such as Kokanee Salmon, several different species of Trout, Large Mouth and Small Mouth Bass, Northern Pike, Perch, Pumpkinseeds, and even a species of fish that you rarely find in Montana, the elusive Tiger Muskie! And get this we have not even named all the different species. Brian Stephens is extremely knowledgeable and when you listen to the podcast, he will take you on a podcast tour of several of the lakes and talks about what you can find in them. Rigger and Brian spent some time talking about the Tiger Muskie in Horseshoe Lake since that is a fish you just don't find often in Montana. Brian talked about why they were put into Horseshoe Lake which is VERY interesting. Basically, they are used, in a way, like a biological Rumba to keep populations of non-sportfish down so that the lake can support fish that are more popular to fishermen. Wait until you hear how tricky these fish are! There are several campgrounds throughout the area so plan on staying a while and explore these lakes. They truly are fascinating and will get you addicted to the area since you can catch so many different species of fish in these lakes. It is likely that you will want to listen to this podcast more than once as there is a TON of information waiting for you.Links:Click here to learn more and see activities, services and what's nearby. Frank grew up in the Cree community of Loon Lake, Alberta. He remembers good times with family in the bush, hunting and trapping. He reflects on the blessing of having a dad and a mom. And he speaks about his spiritual journey, how he came to understand that he had a problem he couldn't fix.
Today's story comes from Julia Rivard Dexter of Loon Lake, Nova Scotia. Like many children, Julia struggled with reading. This would become a source of strife and insecurity for the young girl, until she found her fit in competitive canoe kayaking. In the world of sports Julia excelled. Her dedication and commitment would lead her to the top of her game, and eventually, the Olympics in 2000. After the games, it was time for a new challenge, so Julia threw herself into entrepreneurship. At the time, her son Max started to have his own struggles with reading. Not wanting Max to feel the same insecurity she had felt in school, Julia would go to found and launch Squiggle Park, a learning platform that gamifies literacy education. The goal at first was simple: find a better way for her own son to learn how to read. The impact, however, became much larger than that. This fresh, fun approach to learning was embraced by students and teachers alike, and since launching in October 2016, Squiggle Park has grown to be used in over 12,000 schools.Presented by Charm Diamond CentresHosted by Nancy ReganProduced by PodstarterDo you have a great love story? The true story of an abandoned house, discovered by a young boy in the 1970s, and the mysterious family who disappeared without a trace. Ira introduces this week's story. (1 minute)Act One: Adam Beckman tells the first part of his story, about how, back in the 70s, he and his friends broke into an abandoned house in the small town of Freedom, New Hampshire. The home turned out to be a perfect time capsule, containing the furniture, letters and personal effects of an entire family — abandoned for decades. It seemed like the family just vanished one day, leaving salt and pepper shakers on the table, notes on the bedroom mirror, and a wallet with money still inside. Adam and his friends read the letters, saving some as clues, and never forgot. (30 minutes.)Act Two: Adam Beckman continues his story. He returns to the town in New Hampshire where he discovered the abandoned house as a kid and tries to find out what happened there. It turns out he's not the only one looking for an answer to that question. (25 minutes)Transcripts are available at thisamericanlife.org

E.L. Doctorow (1931-2015). A look at the life and career of E.L. Doctorow, author of Ragtime, The Book of Daniel, The March, Loon Lake and other novels, one of America's greatest writers, who died on July 21, 2015. Interview One: Recorded May 12, 2004, while on tour for his collection, Sweet Land Stories. Interview Two: Recorded Sept/Oct 2009, while on tour for his novel Homer & Langley. The post E.L. Sometimes, you think you know an area well, but then you accidentally stumble upon something that surprises you. Here’s how I found Loon Lake. If you’ve been in my office, you know that we have a large mosaic of satellite images of Flathead Lake that I collected and assembled back in the ‘80s. We used it to tick off areas on the map where we have sold homes and to keep track of past experiences we’ve had on the lake. A few years ago, the Flathead Lake Bio Station came out with a new poster of the lake based on more current satellite images. I wondered whether I could make another 4’ by 8’ mosaic from these newer images, so I called them and asked for their permission. They were very gracious and sold me the right to reproduce their images on a larger scale. The nice thing about their map is that it includes a bathospheric layering of the lake so you can see how deep different areas of it are. I created our new mosaic and brought it into the office, but as I was hanging it on our wall, I noticed there was a strange blotch on the map. “Starting at 3:00 in the video above, you can watch as I zoom in and the message reveals itself!” It was just this white splotch that caused me to think that the printer didn’t work right or that something had been spilled on the map accidentally. That wasn’t the case though, so I started looking at a couple of other mapping programs like Google Earth to see if I could zoom in on this strange area to figure out what it was. Zooming in, I discovered that this blotch was a dry lake bed called Loon Lake (I’d never even heard of that name before). Zooming in further, I realized that someone had written on the lakebed itself, in incredibly massive letters, a message to (I’m assuming) a family member. Starting at 3:00 in the video above, you can watch as I zoom in and the message reveals itself! If anyone knows the backstory about this message written out in this dry lake bed, please share the info with me. It’d be a fun thing to hear about and pass on to others! I would like to thank once again the Flathead Lake Bio Station for allowing me to put together an updated mosaic. As always, if you have any questions about real estate, please feel free to contact me. I’m here to help in these strange times. Until then, enjoy my latest outro: A pretty phenomenal gathering of ducks ‘murmuring’ as they return for the spring.

Not only do loons have a striking appearance with their red eyes and black and white feathers, they also have a strange and haunting sound that can be heard from far distances. Loons hail back all the way to prehistoric times and are close relatives of other extinct prehistoric birds. Though loons are good swimmers the position of their feet makes taking off on land difficult. Some scientists even believe loons may be relatives to early penguins. This recording features the sounds of a windy lakeside with a loon calling out periodically. In between calls the sounds of ducks, crows, wind, and lake ambience can be heard. In this Sunday sermon (August 4, 2019), Pastor Kelly Boyd preaches on Jesus' parables of the growing seed and the sower, explaining how we are called by Christ to lay down our lives for one another to grow in our spirituality and relationship with God and, in turn, our relationships with one another, and how we all seek being spiritually rooted in good soil (deeply rooted in our faith and devotion to God regardless of our constantly changing circumstances in life), rather than allowing ourselves to grow roots among thorns (letting our faith and devotion wain or die out during times of stress, anxiety, etc.), spring up too quickly and not take root, or fall along the path and not even reach the point of being planted in God's way for us in this life. Why local cons Rock! And review writer Carl D Smith who shows you how the sausage is made. ----more---- Con debriefing Small nerdy cons are the best! Everyone is nice and helpful. I had the honor and privilege to be on a panel with 2 other local podcasters Amber and Ben. We talked about the basics on how to start a podcast. It was well attended and people asked lots of questions during the panel and after. When I first arrived I was shocked and asked the people if they were here for the podcasting panel thinking they got the room location wrong. Earlier in the day I told Amber I would be happy if 3 or 4 showed up. To my surprise almost 40 attended. To say I was in shock would be an understatement. It gave me the energy I needed. I wasn’t nervous like I thought I might be and no one left in the middle of the panel. Victory number one of the con I also got to meet our local pod father Eddie of the Podcast Arcade. The rest of the members of the group are the most wonderful people you will ever meet. They are all helpful and not trying to compete for your audience. The podcast community for the most is like that, we aren’t trying to “steal” your audience. We all want more listeners, but we know there are plenty of listeners to go around. They even let me record a session on the make Eternia great again show with Jeff. Side note Jeff and I hit it off since both of us have big families and we homeschool our kids. At the con Jeff and I sat down and recorded a quick bit together. Victory number two of the con. For the first time in my life I took the time to sit down and play DND. Like I said in a previous episode I have never played DND, I have always wanted to, but never took the time to play. Thankfully I had a patient DM who took the time to try and explain the many nuances of the game. Me and my 3 other members who made up our adventurous group took on two small campaigns. Most of us were very green, but we seized the day with minimal damage. I think the DM took it easy on us since we were new. All in all it was fun, I like the fact DND has the large campaigns broken into smaller 1 hour adventures. This allows the casual player to play a quick adventure and easily come back later. I will plan on playing again soon. Victory number 3 of the con. I was able to chat with several creators in the vendor area. There are so many, Jesse of Tank Zombie Studios and The guys of Omaha Underground. Who indulged my questions and comments. Russell Nohelty who is passionate about helping other creators sell the things they create. K Lynn Smith who is insightful and delves out encouragement to all of those who talk with her. Wesley Sun of Sun Brothers Studio is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. He is the type of guy will give you the short off his back if you need it. Lastly and certainly not least is Carl D Smith. I have known Carl since I came to college in 1992. We weren’t best buds but were hung out occasionally and I appreciated his humor and love for all things nerdy. After college our live never crossed paths much. We reconnected this weekend and we both admitted we should have gotten together more since we live less than an hour away. Just like most people we get busy with jobs kids and day to day life we forget to take time to connect with those we used to know. Hopefully that will change. Carl is a good guy with some great talent. I recommend you check out his work and all the other creators work, I will leave a link in the show notes. Final victory number 4 I almost forgot to mention I rode up with artist Lee Bokma. We got to chat on the way up and back about all things nerdy like retro comics and video games. I made a mistake, but it ended up being a good thing. I thought the con started at 11 and actually it was noon. We got there around 10:30, so we had about an hour to waste. Since we were in Council Bluffs I too him to Kanesville Kollectibles. Which is something Carl told me back in 92. It’s an old store which has old comics, books, records, cassettes and other old stuff. The place isn’t organized well, so you have to dig for what you are looking for. If you do some digging you can on rare occasions find a few gems you might be looking for. Which for some is half the fun. I found a bunch of comics for 50 cents and Lee found an old movie poster and a few comics. I was worried Lee might think the place is too dirty and unorganized, but he loved it and plans to come back. What I thought would be bad by making us have to wait an hour ended up being a good thing. Eddie has mentioned after a con you get energized, it’s like summer camp. You don’t want the new people and things you saw to go away. Eventually they do somewhat diminish, but the new friendships and experience that are made keep going on. Yes there is a bit of a dip, but the trend tends to move up because of the connection and experiences that are made. And that’s why you and I go to these things to connect with liked minded people and experience and see new things, to have fun. One thing I will do different next year is to bring one of my older kids. I think they could handle some of the grind. They would have fun see all the nerdy stuff the con has to offer. After all that’s what cons are about experiencing new nerdy things together. Carl D Smith If you are a regular listener you know I usually do a quick comic book review and I will. However since I found some new books at the con I will be reviewing local artist and writers for the next few episodes. The first one is Carl Smith. I am currently reading his BCWYWF Argosy, which is a collection of all of his released and unreleased works from the two issues of the series. It also includes a journal which documents what he was thinking and going through during the time he was putting out his books. Each comic has a page or two explaining how he came up with the story and characters and a little bit about the process of working with artists and dealing with printers etc. You really get to see how the sausage is made with this collection. The next book of Carl’s I got was the Horror of Loon Lake. This is a collection of short comics and short stories all with a horror theme. Unlike BCWYWF Horror of Loon lake has almost no commentary, it’s pretty much all stories in written or comic form. It’s a bunch of creators who got together and combined their works into one big TPB. In both cases it’s wonderful to see creators put out their work for the world to see, and also have someone explain how hard it is to take on such and endeavor. My hats off to Carl and all the people helped get their work published. I will include a link to his work. Please take a look at the books he has created, I only talked about two, but he has more novels and comics. He’s also coming out with a new RPG game later this year. Plus he has a line of children’s books too call draw your own adventure. One thing I had re affirmed from O comic Con from the guys at the podcast arcade to talking with Russell Nohelty, K Lynn Smith, Wesley Sun and Carl Smith is start. If you’re on the fence about something you are hesitant to take on just start. If you are a regular listener you have heard me say this many times. In a tough world though I think we need to hear words of encouragement a lot more than we do. Perfect is the enemy of done. Even it’s a small step, at least that step is in the right direction. If you shoot for the moon and you miss you will still be in a much better place. Whatever you are thinking about starting whether it’s a book or a new business, it doesn’t have to be perfect, but you’re not going to get any better until you start. On That Metal Show ever coming back: "Don't give up hope. We're trying like crazy to find a new home. In fact I just got off the air with Eddie Trunk and we talked about a couple of options for a new home for it. So there's things happeneing." On whether he's on Paul Stanley's shit list due to his relationship with Eddie Trunk: "Well I'm not blocked on twitter or anything by him, so I think I'm ok. I don't think he gives me a lot of thought to be honest." On the grand opening of the Ellefson Coffee Shop in Jackson, MN: "We went to the grave of Mary Jane Terwilliger who is supposedly a witch who was supposedly buried alive at the Loon Lake cemetary by her father and that's where Megadeth got the song Mary Jane." On opening for bands vs. a straight up comedy show: "It's much tougher. I always loved the early days when a comic would open for a band and that was the cool thing. For so long it was not a cool thing. And I'm happy to be one of the few comics in the modern day making it cool again." On the Hologram Dio: "I saw the clips online. I thought it was good. Obviously as a fan you debate in your head you have mixed feelings about it but, I will go see it. I know the people in Ronnie's camp care and wouldn't let it be done in a crappy way." On The Big Bang Theory: "We're in the age of nerd humor. And look, I've been a rock n roller my whole life. My favorite comics are Dice, Richard Pryor, George Carlin you know. Guy's who were ground breakers. I'm not watching nerd humor with this goofy, I don't even know what kind of humor. Thank god there's a laugh track because I wouldn't know where to laugh at some of these jokes.” About Don Jamieson: Is a stand-up comedian and known as one of the hosts of That Metal Show on VH1 Classic. Gary and Gary are livin' the dream and discuss their trip to NorCal to run the Rubicon and Fordyce Creek trails. They bring Shawn and Roberto for a three day and two night camping trip on the Rubicon. This trip, they run the original Rubicon Trail entering through Wentworth Springs Road. Most people enter the Rubicon from Loon Lake which bypasses the Devil's Postpile - a difficult boulder field. After the postpile, they continue on and do the optional Soup Bowl obstacle. Next, they do Little Sluice and finish the Indian Trail as it gets dark. They pull into Buck Island Lake campground after dark and set up camp. In the morning, they backtrack to run the Old Sluice uphill - extremely challenging! Then after breaking down camp, they proceed through Big Sluice and a bunch of boulder crawling. They arrive at Rubicon Springs early enough to play in the pools and waterfalls of the Rubicon River, then camp at the Dirty Dozen campground. Cadillac Hill and Observation Point marks the end of day three. After a day off, Gary and Gary next run Fordyce Creek Trail. This is their second time running Fordyce so they invite the High Sierra 4x4 guys, Jeff and Forest to join along and show them the trail. They find all the hardest lines in the 6 winch hills and do some crazy climbs at the Committee playground. A great day with some good buds gave this trip a perfect finale.
Continuing our trip we leave the Devils Cascade and Lower Pauness and work our way North West towards Loon Lake. We have a gentle tail wind pushing us across the lakes while the warm sun shined down upon us. The fresh air and clean water engulfed our senses. A great time in the Boundary Water Canoe Area.
