The Herle Burly was created by Air Quotes Media with support from our presenting sponsor TELUS, as well as CN Rail and Mastercard Foundation.Well, greetings, you curious Herle Burly-ites! We have a fascinating panel discussion on tap for you today. It's inspired by my friend Dale Eisler's book: “From Left to Right: Saskatchewan's Political and Economic Transformation.” How did a province like Saskatchewan, really the cradle of socialism in Canada – the birthplace of the CCF/NDP – become the most reliably right-wing province in the country? All in one generation! You Herle Burly-ites know that I'm Prelate-born and Regina-raised. I'm really excited Dale is joining me here, today. Author, former journalist, senior federal public servant and currently Senior Policy Fellow at the Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy in Regina. Joining Dale and I for the discussion: 2 other sons of Saskatchewan! Kory Teneycke and Dwain Lingenfelter. You all know, Kory. Mr. Good-hair, Conservative Party Electoral Success Guru, Curse of Politics Panelist. And Dwain, another towering Saskatchewan public figure. He's the former leader of the provincial NDP, President of the party, and in the governments of Blakeney and Romanow, Minister of a number of different key portfolios as well as Deputy Premier.Thank you for joining us on #TheHerleBurly podcast. Witness to Yesterday (The Champlain Society Podcast on Canadian History)
In this podcast episode, Greg Marchildon interviews Dale Eisler, the author of From Left to Right: Saskatchewan's Political and Economic Transition. Published by the University of Regina Press in 2022, Eisler's book explores the reasons why Saskatchewan evolved from being the cradle of social democracy to one of the country's most conservative political cultures in the past half century. He traces the history of the left-oriented CCF-NDP as the long-time governing party of Saskatchewan to the dominance of the right-wing Saskatchewan Party since 2007. Dale Eisler is a former journalist, federal public servant (including time as an Assistant Deputy Minister in the Department of Finance), and Canada's Consul General in Denver. Currently, he is Senior Policy Fellow at the Johnson-Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy at the University of Regina. He is also an author of four books, including two previous books focused on Saskatchewan history. This podcast was produced by Jessica Schmidt. Saskatchewan has undergone a massive shift on the political spectrum over many decades. In it, there are some lessons for its neighbour to the west. Host Kathleen Petty is joined by Dale Eisler, author of From Left to Right, to talk about that political transformation and what Alberta and Canada can learn from it.
What is at the core of political identity? A look through a Saskatchewan lens. Dale Eisler, a journalist for over 25 years and author of From Left to Right: Saskatchewan's Political and Economic Transformation explains.

"My own dream-induced pain started at the same time this child was mowed down. Then and there is when and where my faith in God died because God, the higher power, had allowed this unspeakable nightmare to happen. My hope for the future evaporated, all while helplessness chewed through my guts From Left to Right. This was the same moment I realized that humanity is connected in a definitive, tangible, and spiritual way. A trigger-happy and scared Marine was likewise connected. He made an understandable mistake in the heat of the moment and accidentally destroyed this innocent little girl. His solitary action grew into horror, altering all of our lives. We are all intrinsically connected, and yet, we point weapons at each other, pulling triggers, and then we deal with a fragmented, amputated existence. War eviscerates us all." For more than two weeks the U.S. has been roiling in daily often violent versus peaceful protests over allegations of black racism and white privilege triggered by videos of the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis police custody arrested for passing a $20 counterfeit bill. The nightly protests were set against the background of lurid flames and looting of minority owned businesses and fashionable stores from Manhattan to Santa Monica. In a Jewish Press opinion article entitled “God Is Dead,” Dan Greenfield illustrated how allies of the Black Lives Matter movement were torching African American and other churches including the President’s Church, St. John’s Episcopal on the periphery of Lafayette Park within steps of the White House. That episode figured in a dramatic assault with tear gas and rubber bullets clearing the protests. Greenfield cited further evidence of a pogrom in broken windows at the 225 year Reform Temple in Richmond, Virginia and the Pro -Palestinian vandalism on the facade of an Orthodox Synagogue in the Fairfax section of Los Angeles; the latter indicative of “anti-Israelism the new antisemitism.” Back in 2016, Tablet Magazine headlined a news report, “From Left to Right, Jewish Groups condemn ‘Repellent ‘Black Lives Matter Claim of Israeli ‘Genocide.’” What the media is not reporting is there are ominous signs that behind the “balagan” – chaos in slangy Hebrew- may be a disturbing anti-American Intifada. Mr. Van Zile's views expressed in this Israel News Talk Radio - Beyond the Matrix interview are his own and not that of the Committee on Accuracy of Middle East Reporting and Analysis. Professor Nancy Sinkoff joins host CEO Dan Mariaschin to discuss her new book, "From Left to Right: Lucy S. Dawidowicz, the New York Intellectuals, and the Politics of Jewish History." In her book, Sinkoff examines the life of Lucy Dawidowicz, intellectual and pioneer historian in the field that is now called Holocaust studies. Mariaschin and Sinkoff speak about her decision to write about Dawidowicz and what she discovered about her subject along the way. They also talk about Dawidowicz's attitude toward feminism and how it may have affected the way her thoughts and writing are evaluated today. Sinkoff is an award-winning author and is Academic Director of the Bildner Center for the Study of Jewish Life and associate professor of Jewish Studies and History at Rutgers—New Brunswick.

From Left to Right: Lucy S. Dawidowicz, the New York Intellectuals, and the Politics of Jewish History (Wayne State University Press, 2020) is the first comprehensive biography of Dawidowicz (1915-1990), a pioneer historian in the field that is now called Holocaust studies. Dawidowicz was a household name in the postwar years, not only because of her scholarship but also due to her political views. Dawidowicz, like many other New York intellectuals, was a youthful communist, became an FDR democrat midcentury, and later championed neoconservatism. Nancy Sinkoff argues that Dawidowicz's rightward shift emerged out of living in prewar Poland, watching the Holocaust unfold from New York City, and working with displaced persons in postwar Germany. Based on over forty-five archival collections, From Left to Right chronicles Dawidowicz's life as a window into the major events and issues of twentieth-century Jewish life. From Left to Right is structured in four parts. Part 1 tells the story of Dawidowicz's childhood, adolescence, and college years when she was an immigrant daughter living in New York City. Part 2 narrates Dawidowicz's formative European years in Poland, New York City (when she was enclosed in the European-like world of the New York YIVO), and Germany. Part 3 tells how Dawidowicz became an American while Polish Jewish civilization was still inscribed in her heart and also explores when and how Dawidowicz became the voice of East European Jewry for the American Jewish public. Part 4 exposes the fissure between Dawidowicz's European-inflected diaspora nationalist modern Jewish identity and the shifting definition of American liberalism from the late 1960s forward, which also saw the emergence of neoconservatism. The book includes an interpretation of her memoir From that Place and Time, as well as an appendix of thirty-one previously unpublished letters that illustrate the broad reach of her work and person. Dawidowicz's right-wing politics, sex, and unabashed commitment to Jewish particularism in an East European Jewish key have resulted in scholarly neglect. Therefore, this book is strongly recommended for scholars and general readers interested in Jewish and women's studies. Nancy Sinkoff is the Academic Director of the Bildner Center for the Study of Jewish Life and Associate Professor of Jewish Studies and History at Rutgers—New Brunswick. Steven Seegel is professor of history at University of Northern Colorado. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In the mid 1960s, a group called The Detergents released an album of novelty songs, and a couple of them caught on, but one did especially well, a parody of the Shangri-Las' "Leader of the Pack." Among that group was a young man named Ron Dante. A few years later, Dante was chosen to be the lead voice for a fictional band that was tied in with a cartoon series. That band was The Archies, and they had a short string of hits, peaking with "Sugar Sugar" in 1969. Dante provided all the male voices on "Sugar Sugar," and Toni Wine provided all the female voices. So yes, you appear to hear two women—one singing low and the other singing high—but in fact they're both Toni Wine. Wine left the group around the time "Sugar Sugar" became a hit, and the female portion of The Archies' follow-up single was voiced by someone else. You'll just have to listen in to find out who that was. The Archies, around the "Sugar Sugar" era. From Left to right: Toni Wine, Ron Dante, Jeff Barry, Hot Dog (taking a break from conducting), Ron Dante, Toni Wine. Heh. From Left to Right in Photo: ELI OWEN, Deputy Commander, California State Threat Assessment Center THOR EDEN, California Cyber Security Integration Center MICHAEL CREWS, Cal OES Information Security Officer For this episode we brought three of California’s cyber security gurus who talk about some of things you and your agency/company can and should be doing to protect yourself from cybercrime. October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month which is an annual campaign to raise awareness about cybersecurity, but any month, any day is a good day to beef up your own personal protection. We live in a world that is more connected than ever before. The Internet touches almost all aspects of everyone’s daily life, whether we realize it or not. National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) is designed to engage and educate public and private sector partners through events and initiatives to raise awareness about cybersecurity, provide them with tools and resources needed to stay safe online, and increase the resiliency of the Nation in the event of a cyber incident. (Source: Dept. of Homeland Security) California Cybersecurity Integration Center’s (CalCSIC) mission is to reduce the likelihood and severity of cyber incidents that may significantly compromise the security and resilience of California’s economy, its critical infrastructure, and information resources. Cal OES executes this mission together with CDT, CHP and CMD. Cal-CSIC is comprised of two key functional components: (1) cyber threat analysis; and, (2) dissemination and coordination of incident response and recovery operations (hereinafter “recovery”). Specifically, Cal-CSIC coordinates the identification, prevention or mitigation of cyber threats, as well as coordinates the response to, and recovery from significant cyber incidents. Cal-CSIC coordinates the production of threat assessments for the State, and facilitates analysis and exchange of cyber threat information with all affected organizations. Terms Used: Cyber Crime – Crime conducted via the Internet or some other computer network APT – Advanced Persistent Threat Social Engineering – a line of attack that relies heavily on human interaction and often involves tricking people into breaking normal security procedures. (Source: TechTarget) Spycraft – (aka Tradecraft) Within the intelligence community, this refers to the techniques, methods and technologies used in modern espionage (spying) and generally, as part of the activity of intelligence. Polymorphic – Polymorphic malware is harmful, destructive or intrusive computer software such as a virus, worm, Trojan or spyware that constantly changes ("morphs"), making it difficult to detect with anti-malware programs. Evolution of the malicious code can occur in a variety of ways such as filename changes, compression and encryption with variable keys. (Source: TechTarget) Spear phishing – An email that appears to be from an individual or business that you know. But it isn't. It's from the same criminal hackers who want your credit card and bank account numbers, passwords, and the financial information on your PC. Ransomware – There are different types of ransomware. However, all of them will prevent you from using your PC normally, and they will all ask you to do something before you can use your PC. They can target any PC users, whether it’s a home computer, endpoints in an enterprise network, or servers used by a government agency or healthcare provider. Ransomware can: Prevent you from accessing your computer. Encrypt files so you can't use them. Stop certain apps from running (like your web browser). Ransomware will demand that you pay money (a “ransom”) to get access to your PC or files. We have also seen them make you complete surveys. There is no guarantee that paying the fine or doing what the ransomware tells you will give access to your PC or files again.
