Could we be about to reignite the vicious Lyon-era rivalry with the Cats? We will have a Clark of the Course to oversee it! Time to Restump Preview Podcast Saturday's Cat clash. Think of Matty Scarlett only getting the equivalent of a five minute holiday for king hitting Hayden Ballantyne in an unprovoked attack. Yes, Ballas got a couple for knocking Paul Chapman in the same game, but it was a misguided retaliatory self-defensive action, a case of mistaken identity. Think of Steve Johnson and his initial weird unwillingness to shake the hand of the great Ryan Crowley, who had just put him through 80 minutes of relentless “how'd you like that one” type treatment. Think of Fremantle getting shafted by the AFL and shunted down to Geelong to play that qualifying final in 2013, only to come out victors. And what about the provocative Mock-A-Docker double page spread in the Geelong Advertiser! (Did you know that if you go outside late at night when it is quiet, and you turn an ear to the east, you can hear Geelong folk still grinding their teeth over that loss to us!) And then think about today! Us securing Jordan Clark picking up Matty Johnson and  leaving the Cats with pennies on the dollar.Sure, they did well years back when they picked up Sam Menegola and got him going and lets not forget they royally stung us in 2016, when they got us to pay massive overs when we parted with pick 63 for Shane Kersten.Oh, the picturesque event littered trail a deep and meaningful, nasty at times, rivalry creates. That rivalry flame is sadly dim, only just flickering and it needs attention. Could Jordan Clark be the igniting spark that brings it roaring back to life? If you're looking for something to get you through part of Friday, something to cut the wait until our Purple troops destroy the hoops on Saturday, then join us for a sneaky peak preview, of the young band of purple misfits taking on the aging Gee-long in the tooth rock stars. As always your time is valuable so listen responsibly and know when to stop.

This is The Digital Story Podcast #791, May 18, 2021. Today's theme is "It's Spring! 5 Tips to Clean Up Your Photography Act." I'm Derrick Story. Opening Monologue Spring cleaning shouldn't be limited to our yards, garages, and closets. We get behind on photography-related tasks as well. It's not that we're lazy or distracted (OK, well maybe distracted), it's just that we forget to do certain things that may really help us in the long run. Consider today's show a handy checklist for those springtime tasks. Look at it this way, everyone of these is more fun than cleaning the garage. I hope you enjoy the show. Digital Photography Podcast 790 Tune-In Via Your Favorite Podcast App! Apple Podcasts -- Spotify Podcasts -- Stitcher Podbean Podcasts -- Podbay FM -- Tune In It's Spring! 5 Tips to Clean Up Your Photography Act I remember that I once saw a pie chart of how a professional photographer's time was spent each week. Ironically, on about 15 percent was actually taking pictures. Fortunately, as enthusiasts, we have far fewer business chores to attend to. But that doesn't mean we're off the hook entirely. Take a look at this checklist and start mapping out your plan. Firmware Updates - I had missed one for my X100V only to discover that it added webcam ability to my camera. That's a pretty big deal these days. Be sure to review your firmware status for both camera bodies and lenses. Equipment Inventory - I'm sure I just did one not too long ago. I looked it up, and yes, more than 5 years had passed. Wow! Time flies. And boy has my gear changed a lot since then. Be sure to record pictures, serial numbers, and any purchase information you may have. Get Rid of Gear that You're Not Using - It's amazing how fast we can accumulate new gear. And many times those new pieces render stuff we already have as obsolete. You can tie this project to your inventory efforts and get bonus points for efficiency. Test Your Backup - I know you're already backing up your valuable images. But when was the last time you tested your system for integrity? Now would be a good time to ensure you can actually restore. Clean Off Your Laptop Hard Drive - Now that the sun is shinning for those of us North of the equator, you'll probably be adding many more pictures to your photo catalogs. Clean off those laptop drives now! You may not have time for all of these. But accomplishing just one or two can pay off big up the road. News Corp Australia Has Laid Off the Last of Its Photographers: Report You can read the entire article on Petapixel. News Corp Australia has reportedly laid off the last of its staff photographers and converted fully to using freelancers according to a new report. The last eight photographers were informed last week that their positions were being made redundant. According to The Guardian, the Rupert Murdoch-owned publication giant called the last photographers who worked for the Geelong Advertiser, the NT News, the Hobart Mercury, Townsville Bulletin, the Gold Coast Bulletin, and the Cairns Post into a management meeting and were told them that they would be replaced by freelancers. The report also states that those eight staff members -- the last of a full-time staff that once numbered over 100 -- were given the opportunity to purchase their staff photography equipment at discounted prices and come back as outsourced, freelance labor. News Corp has been moving towards a freelancer model when it comes to photography for several years. Last year, the company let its chief photographer Gary Ramage go, and in November it cut 16 photography positions out of 25 total jobs it eliminated. New Release: Capture One Pro 21 Essential Training Capture One Pro is a complete digital photo management and editing application for professional photographers and serious enthusiasts. Photographers who appreciate outstanding RAW processing, expert color control, and logical organization should consider Capture One Pro for its comprehensive feature set. In this course, professional photographer and instructor Derrick Story helps you learn the basics quickly, then takes you deeper into the application to master its finer points. For seasoned users, Derrick also covers all the new features in version 21, including Speed Edit, the Dehaze slider, and Style Brushes that allow you to enhance specific areas of a photo. To wrap up, he shares tips and techniques that can help you ensure your workflow is as efficient as possible. You can check it out now by visiting LinkedIn Learning. The 5 favorite camera brands in Japan (and you won't believe who's first!) You can read the entire article on Digital Camera World. Japan's favorite camera brand isn't Canon. It isn't Nikon. It isn't Sony, or Olympus or Fujifilm. No, Japan's favorite camera brand is Pentax / Ricoh. That's according to the latest results in a survey being conducted by IT Media, asking Japanese consumers to choose their favorite digital camera maker. And despite the best Pentax cameras all being DSLRs, and facing quite a technological disparity compared to the likes of the best Canon cameras and best Sony cameras, that hasn't stopped Ricoh being Japan's most beloved brand in the camera industry. The survey (spotted by Pentax Rumors) still has another ten days to run, closing on 27 May, but so far the results are pretty eye-opening. Almost a quarter of Japanese users say that Pentax / Ricoh is their favorite brand, with nearly a fifth pledging allegiance to Nikon. Here are the top 6 - Pentax, Nikon, Canon, Sony, Olympus, and Fujifilm. The New Donation Kit for Carefree Shipping of Found Film Cameras We have more time around the house than ever. Positive psychology uses this acronym to guide us to the five core pillars of happiness. Anything that boosts our positive emotion, engagement in life roles, relationships, personal meaning, and accomplishment is likely to promote our overall well-being and positive mental health. Laois man Zach Tuohy will line out for Geelong in the Australian Rules Grand Final this Saturday when they take on reigning champions Richmond in the Gabba Stadium in Brisbane. In a normal year the final would have been held in the MCG in Melbourne but it has been moved out of the city for the first time since 1901 due to the Coronavirus restrictions. 30,000 supporters will be able to attend in Brisbane but unfortunately Zach won't have all of his family in attendance. On this week's podcast we're joined by his parents Noel and Marie and his sister Naomi to chat about what it was like for them when Zach moved to Australia and how proud they are of his achievements. We also have the view from Geelong with Greg Dundas from the Geelong Advertiser newspaper joining us on the line to tell us how respected Zach is in the AFL community and how the celebrations might be handled if Geelong win. Laois footballer Colm Begley - who played AFL for four years - joins us to recall his experience in Australia while Zach's former Laois and Portlaoise team-mate Kieran Lillis reflects on their experience playing together at underage and senior.

Wherein tins and nerves are rattled. Geelong Advertiser, 12 January 1885, p. 3, cols. 4-5 See the rest of that day's news here   A bawdy depiction of charivari by the French caricaturist J.J. Grandville. It appeared in the journal La Caricature in 1831. Here's a rare image of colonial tin-kettling, roughly contemporary with the events at Germantown – It comes from page 8 of the Sydney Mail & New South Wales Advertiser of 18 December 1886, where it was one of a series that purported to illustrate ‘A Country Wedding’. The accompanying article (on page 26 of the same issue) described the tin-kettling depicted. Read the entire article here Note that the humble kerosene tin featured prominently in both illustration and text. Here's an example the genuine article – from its undented condition, evidently not used in tin-kettling – from the collection of the National Museum of Australia. Something I ran out of time to mention in the podcast was the other kinds of tin-kettling reported in 19th-century Australian newspaper. Dogs were relentlessly tin-kettled, for 'fun', by having tin kettles tied to their tails. And the tin-kettling of bees was a traditional (if rarely effective) method of coaxing a swarm back to the hive. Here's a report of an apicultural tin-kettling – or tanging – from the Mount Alexander Mail in 1872. Illustrations of colonial tin-kettling are hard to come by. But here's one, from the Sydney Mail & New South Wales Advertiser on 15 February 1905 – By illustrator Fred Leist, it accompanied 'An Unexpected Swarming', Chapter VII of the Sydney Mail Prize Story, 'Children of the State' by John Primrose – ‘…and then into view came the queerest procession. In the lead, the preacher, beating a boiler lid with an old iron spoon as though his life depended on it; nearest to him, Ruth, with uprolled sleeves, clanging two saucepan lids together like any Miriam of old; third on the list, and panting with the exertion of carrying a kerosene bucket in one hand and banging it with the rolling-pin held in the other, walked and half trotted Aunt Susan, and lastly, in the rear, in the van, and every where, able for once to make all the row they liked, were the children, seven all told, and trebling for noise the three adults. No one took any notice of 'the little teacher' as the procession swept by. Their eyes were on 'Cousin Dan,' and his on a thin black cloud that buzzed and fluttered before him…’ Read the whole thing here And finally, here's the very last account of full-throated tin-kettling I turned up at Trove Newspapers, from page 46 of Sydney's Daily Telegraph on 8 March 1953 (read the whole report here) – and the cartoon that accompanied it –

Contender # 9 - Bunyip This time, on Counting Cryptids: We discuss the Bunyip. Straight out of Aboriginal Australia, the Bunyip is a smorgasbord of strange. Reports of fur and feathers, fins and claws, a beard and a duck bill (and if that wasn't strange enough, a single massive eye, and a stomach-mouth). While descriptions of the Bunyip seem to paint this creature to be something of a sore thumb, modern day sightings may not be as predictable as one would expect.  Do you think there something sinister swimming in the swamps?
