On June 6, 1991, Penny Bell, a 43-year-old businesswoman and mother of two, was brutally stabbed over 50 times in her Jaguar in the busy Gurnell Leisure Center parking lot in Greenford, London, in a frenzied attack that left no witnesses despite the public setting. Penny, a happy and successful director at a recruitment agency, lived in an affluent Buckinghamshire neighborhood with her husband, Alistair, and their children, Matthew and Lauren. That morning, she left home for an unspecified 9:50 a.m. appointment, mentioning it to builders renovating her home, but no record of it was found. Three days prior, she withdrew £8,500 from a joint account, an unusual act possibly linked to her murder. Witnesses reported seeing a man enter a blue Jaguar, a slow-moving Jaguar with hazard lights, and Penny mouthing “Help me” with a passenger, but no one intervened. The investigation, which interviewed over 8,000 people, was hampered by compromised forensic evidence and no clear motive, though the attack's savagery suggested Penny knew her killer. Suspects like Alistair, a former neighbor, John Richmond, and serial killer Robert Napper were cleared. In 2021, Penny's daughter, Lauren, who was nine at the time and has no memories of her mother, renewed efforts with a £20,000 reward and media campaigns, believing the killer was motivated by personal rage. The case remains unsolved, leaving Lauren to honor her mother's vibrant legacy by naming her daughter Penny. Sources: McMahon, J., & McMahon, J. (2024, August 9). Send us a textA story based during World War 2, a double murder committed by a younger male who did nothing to help the war effort who seemed totally selfish and was a danger to women. I can only find one other podcast that has covered this podcast, which was Murder Mile, which is a recommended listen. This podcast was recorded in one take and has not been edited, I hesitate and mispronounce as usual. On listening to playback, there is a pug dog snoring in the background, so sorry about that. I would spend more time on the podcasts but there are so many stories and so little time. I record these podcasts instead of watching a screen. There is so much good stuff to watch and listen to, I am amazed that anyone listens to this pod. I will continue to post even if no one listens. This is part of the reason that I do not bother to edit. I could produce a well produced and edited podcast, or post two podcasts, telling two stories. I also prefer live broadcasts when things can go wrong. The most surprising thing to happen during my recording a podcast was an owl flying through an open window and freaking out a cat that was sitting in a chair, all of which was kept in the pod.I did have a website but when I had to renew the name, they quoted a price which was ridiculous, a hundred times more than the introductory price. So the name Strange Stories UK is available.I will eventually post on YouTube to see how that turns out. I will post some photographs of the house and where the body was found on the Strange Stories UK Facebook site and the Instagram site.
Penny Bell, a 43-year-old English businesswoman and mother of two, was brutally murdered on 6 June 1991 in the car park of Gurnell Leisure Centre in Greenford, London. Stabbed over 50 times in a frenzied attack, Penny's murder remains unsolved. On the morning of her death, she left her home in her blue Jaguar XJS, informing workers renovating her kitchen that she was late for an appointment—an appointment never recorded. Witnesses later reported seeing her driving erratically with a passenger in her car, and one witness claimed she appeared to ask for help. The attack was personal, with no signs of robbery or sexual assault, and police believe Penny likely knew her killer. Suspicious elements include her withdrawal of £8,500 three days prior, wallpaper samples found in her car, and a mysterious man seen entering her vehicle. Despite questioning thousands, offering rewards, and pursuing leads—including her husband, an alleged lover, and even convicted killer Robert Napper—the case remains a mysteryOssuary 6 - Air Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/Contact us at: weeknightmysteries@gmail.comInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/weeknightmysteriesTikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@weeknightmysteries

A bumper full length programme this week as we hit the Quarter finals of the FA Trophy and FA Vase, four ties, eight clubs in each compettion. First up an old friend of the show in a new job. His record speaks for itself but it's not often a manager moves into a new dugout in the back end of the season, at a club bigger than he's ever taken on before, in sight of a play-off place and in the quarter-finals of a national cup competition. Michael Clegg has achieved just that at Macclesfield although in an open and honest interview, he admits he's only played one won one in the role so far. Phil Annets is on hand with his @favasefactfile hat on to introduce us to the 8 clubs in the VAse quarter-finals, and to remind us of THAT fact about FA Vase finals. Then we speak to a man who is CHairman and joint manager at North Greenford United as they are two rounds from Wembley. Paul Mills admits it's a real family affair just a stone's throw from the national stadium but wouldn't change a thing about his club's big day on Saturday. Rounding it all off, Jon Couch returns from The Non League Paper to help us cover weather and postponements, club finances, moving managers, and fanatical fans.
Dan O'Neill is a wildlife expert and biologist. He's also the first openly gay wildlife presenter. In this Open Country he's in London to discover what ‘rewilding' means for the capital. The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, launched the ‘Rewild London Fund' to help make London a leader in urban rewilding, from restoring rivers to reintroducing species currently absent from the capital. One of them is the beaver and at Paradise Fields in Ealing, just down the road from the busy Greenford tube station, a family of five beavers have just been introduced to their new home by conservationist and vet Dr Sean McCormack. Together they will transform a gritty urban wasteland into a wildlife haven with ecosystem benefits for residents' wellbeing and flood defences. The beavers are just one example of the huge growth in biodiversity in the city. As Dan travels from Ealing in the West to the east of the city at The Paddocks in Tottenham Hale, he discovers that there is also growing diversity in the conservation community. He meets LGQBT conservationist Izzy Knight who shares his passion for everything wild and celebrates the ‘Queer Nature' festival at Kew, before heading back to Ealing to see whether he can spot those elusive beavers in their new home.Produced by Helen Lennard

In this episode Sarah Cole, Managing Director of Universal Commercial Relocation, discusses how she became involved in the industry only 20 years ago (next year) after leaving her role as a commercial property specialist within the legal profession to start a family. We discover that Universal was formed in 1978 by Sarah's father (William), and is a 2nd generation commercial moving specialist based in Greenford, Greater London, servicing mainly the London area, with a fulltime staff of approximately 25 and running a fleet of 8 vehicles. We also discover that Sarah is Managing Director of ISS (Information Storage Solutions), the document archiving side of the business which was started by Sarah's mother (Margaret) in 1986. We discuss that while archive is going more digital Sarah still maintains there is a large requirement for the physical storage side of things. We discover that Sarah has very much enjoyed working in what is predominantly a male dominated industry and has never found any challenges with that. Sarah has found that there are a lot of women within management roles of organisations but would encourage more to get involved with the BAR initiatives. We discuss how working from home has and will affect the commercial relocation industry and Sarah highlights that even before the pandemic companies were looking at the office space occupied and how they were using it, from a productivity, wellbeing, and a sustainability point of view, but it was such a huge and risky ask to undertake the stress test. However, the pandemic became that stress test and forced us overnight to work from home and leave the office behind. Sarah believes the future is with companies ultimately having a hybrid solution, shrinking the physical space but keeping separate office space for staff to participate in, but affording staff more flexibility about how to undertake their work. We discover that Universal have many accreditations which Sarah believes is fundamental to business because office moving is business critical and the accreditations helps the client to manage the risk. We also discover that Universal have won the BAR Commercial Mover of the Year (CMotY) 3 times and is a great pat on the back for the staff that provide a huge contribution to the company. We discuss that Sarah's challenges to date are to always move with your client needs and to look ahead at where things are heading. Universal are always trying to add value to their clients to support them. Sarah also believes getting the message across in what they do, how they do it and the value they bring to a service is also often challenging. We discover that Sarah would not change anything from her past, she enjoyed her time as a lawyer but was happy to move on and is very happy with what she does now and where Universal is. We discuss Sarah's highpoint, which was back in 2015 when Universal were awarded CMotY winners for the first time (having been a finalist twice before), and especially so as the awared was presented at conference (BAR) in the city in which her parents were from, Belfast. We discover that the one change Sarah would make to the industry is to raise our profile, selling our services better and making clients aware how specialist we are and the professionalism we bring, as she believes as an industry, we undersell ourselves and there is often a race to the bottom in terms of pricing. We discuss the advice Sarah would give to a younger self and it was confidence, get involved in the industry and BAR, go along to conferences/events and take up training and development opportunities offered. We discover that within the next 5 years Sarah would like to grow the team at Universal, bringing in more junior members to the team and increasing and expanding the scope of what Universal do. We discuss that outside of the industry Sarah likes to spend time with her family and friends, going out, attending concerts and eating in nice restaurants. And as always we end Moving Matters with a funny moving story regarding Margaret Thatcher and a union card! Enjoy! Ruth Penelope “Penny” Bell – 6th June 1991 Penny Bell, as most people will know her, was born in 1948. Her family life seems to have been a happy and healthy one. In 1981 she married her boyfriend, Alistair Bell. They had met in 1975. The marriage would be Penny’s second, the first ending in divorce some years earlier. Together Penny and Alistair would both become successful people employed at the director level. Alistair was a director of an estate agency, that’s a realtor for the American audience, and Penny was the director of a Human Resource agency with a specialism in the supply of high-quality catering staff. Her business was doing well with an annual turnover of around £3 million, and Penny was earning around £80,000 – good money for 1991 when there was a recession on. At 12.15, metropolitan Police were called to the car park of the Gurnell Leisure Centre in Greenford, West London. A woman had been taken ill in the car park. An hour or so earlier, two other women using the facilities had seen the car, a powder-blue Jaguar XJS, parked in a bay with the hazard lights on and the windscreen wipers on. They had looked inside and saw a woman they thought was asleep, so went on to their exercise. Only when they returned an hour later did they check again, this time they saw a little more and the police were called. Carefully the attending officers opened the door to find a scene of utter horror. Penny Bell sat in the driver’s seat dead from massive blood loss caused by a savage attack with a bladed implement. The car-park was immediately sealed and became a crime scene that would be meticulously examined by forensic and uniformed officers. The god of ME is one we all fight. How can we remove ourselves from the center of our lives so God can work in us and through us?
We all desire power and influence, but allowing our desire for influence to feed our egos will turn it into an idol.
Listen as Keith shares about the dangerous gods of pleasure and entertainment. Learn how comfort is never the goal of Christianity, and how loving God changes our entertainment.
Listen as Keith shares about Exodus 32, a golden calf, and the gods we allow to have a place in our lives.
Listen as Keith describes how God is power, and God is active, and how Jesus is always better.
God stands alone. No one and no thing can possibly compare.

Today one of our graduating seniors shared a message about the importance of community in not only our lives but the church.
This morning we look at Joshua 6 and story of the Israelites and Jerhico. This message will challenge you to press into God's process and embrace the unknown with abundant faith.
This week we dug into Psalm 40, observing the wonder and glory of God. Inspired by the song Wonder by Hillsong United we were challenged to observe and celebrate the wonder of who God is in our lives and all that he continues to do in our lives.
In our GCC Values series, we are talking about our churches (Greenford Christian Church) values and mission. Over the four weeks, we will be looking at what makes a disciple and our call to make disciples.

June 6, 1991. Greenford, England. While leaving her family’s home, 43-year old Penny Bell tells a group of builders that she is running late for an appointment. Later that morning, Penny is discovered dead inside her vehicle after being brutally stabbed 50 times. Three days before her death, Penny had withdrawn £8,500 from her bank account without telling anybody, but the money is never recovered and no one uncovers the reason for the mysterious appointment which led to Penny’s death. “The Trail Went Cold” will be travelling back to the United Kingdom for this week’s minisode, as we chronicle one of the country’s most baffling unsolved murders. 7-9pm with Paul James and The Intrepid Birdman show. Dave Birdaman (photo) has passed his motorbike test. Paul assures us that Radio Caroline will be coming back. He also tells us about a new film called Polyester (produced by John Waters). The exciting thing about the film is that it was released in in in Odorama so Paul got a scractch’n’sniff card to use at key points in the film. Sounds better than 3D. I wonder why it never caught on?We also hear from Ian the engineer. The news includes an item about 2 members of Thameside Radio staff who appeared at Marylebone court last Tuesday charged with stealing ¼p of electricity. The magistrate was more concerned at the waste of police time than the negligible theft of electricity. Thameside Radio listenerers mantioned include: Cindy of Ealing. Gary in Hillingdon. Martin Gould of Greenford and Janice. Jamie Witcombe in Colin Gardens NW9. Alan of Kingsbury for Francine. Nigel Collins from Muswell Hill.
Bob announces that there is a surprise outside broadcast – listeners meet at the Star and Garter pub at the north end of Kew Bridge where they will be escorted to the OB site. Alex is running the OB at Kew Green which is linked back live to the studio. He is joined by Bob Edwards, Sarah and Dave when they’re not actually doing their shows. There are games and competitions including a race to a mystery phone box with 20 people in the box. There’s fabulous music too. The Intrepid Birdman has a live superquiz. Someone made it from Brentwood in Essex. Pretty much the other side of London! There is an article about a new pub cinema called “The Hollywood Greats” in Acton – There was a Thameside listener visit there a few months later. The airwaves were busy that night with superbeams – There was a radio mic linking from Kew Green to the studio near Kew Gardens station, then the the studio linked to the transmission site (Trellick Tower) and from Trellick the signal was broadcast all over London. Thameside Radio listeners at the Kew Green OB include: Steve from Hayes. Victor from Ascot. Bamber from West Acton. Ian Buzwell, Peter Buzwell. Renata (who fancies Tom). Matthew from Greenford. Hilary (and Jeanette). Someone with a Thameside Radio sticker in Park Drive Harrow. Walthamstow Swimming Club. Pete from QEC. Tommy Graney from St Marks School Hounslow. Tim who works at Jayes. George Wood from Latymer. The wonderful Incognito (who sent a demo tape) comprising Sarah Connor, Andy Francis, Andrew Gibbons, Ian Grimble and Greg Shepherd. Cindy, Penny, Grace and Belle. Mick Taylor (who writes occasional jingles).
Back to April 1978. Thameside Radio 90.2 is only 6 months old and a very young sounding Bob presents a one hour show. Tony Lloyd reads the news. Last week was an extended broadcast with Tony doing the second hour. Debbie is taking calls. (What happened to Debbie the Phone Girl?) Dave from the BBC is in the studio as well as a photographer and listener Simon Wallace. Loads of mentions and dedications. Many of them say that it's the the first time they have tuned in to Thameside Radio 90.2: Here are some that had surnames or additional information so might pop up if they're Googled - there a many more mentions on the recording: Downtown of Romford, Roger Scott from Epsom for his wife Linda and children Tristan and Lucinda, Steve Tarling fron Surrey University, Neal Oldfield of Appleton, Paul searle of Upminster for the 1st Boys Brigade, Steve Pagnall of Greenford, Alan Cooper of Edgware, Bernard O'Brien of Hainault, Kevin Keele, Tony and Kim Chiffey and Stephen Cruikshank.
Sue Lawley's castaway this week is the philosopher Mary Midgley. For the last 30 years Mary Midgley has been one of Britain's leading moral philosophers. She has been called "the most frightening philosopher in the country" as a result of her ideas and the acuity with which she defends them. Her work is chiefly concerned with the role of science in our lives; whether human nature exists, and if so, what it tells us about ourselves; the concept of wickedness; and the part that art and religion have to play in telling us about human behaviour and experience. Mary was born in 1919 in Greenford, the youngest of Cannon Scrutton and his wife Lesley's two children. She was educated at Sommerville College, Oxford and after university began working as a lecturer in the philosophy department at Reading University before moving to the University of Newcastle. She married Geoffrey Midgley, also a philosopher in 1950 and they went on to have three children. Her first philosophical book Beast and Man was published in 1979 when she was 50. Since then she has continued to publish books on a diverse range of issues. Now 86, Mary continues to live in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, in the home she shared with her husband Geoffrey, who died in 1997.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs]Favourite track: Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis by Vaughan Williams Book: The Variety of Religious Experiences by William James Luxury: A solar hot water system
