“I wasn't looking to be in a business,” jokes Danai Gurira. “I really felt like I wanted to tell stories about things I haven't seen.” The Zimbabwean-American saw a way to use the craft of writing to inspire others, even though she initially thought she was going to be an academic. “The focus is always around African women,” she says. “I was born in the midwest but we moved back shortly after Zimbabwe gained independence. I guess I came to a place of outrage.” She received education from American and British influences. “The African was very rarely heard or seen, or put in an obscure light. It was a one-dimensional, damaging image.” “I wanted to tell stories that countered that. I've said this a billion times, but it's a burden on my heart and also an outrage that leads me to want to explore a story and give it a dimension, as best as I can.” In one such story, a play called Eclipsed, Gurira writes about five Liberian women and their tale of survival near the end of the Second Liberian Civil War. It was nominated for a Tony Award and was the first play with an all-black and female creative cast and team to premiere on Broadway. “Then there are times when I'm just fascinated by something and have to pursue the story. But the burden is that I feel these stories need to be heard and I don't understand why they're not.” As she was working to shatter these ideas about Africans, other creatives were pursuing the same idea. “Black Panther was a real gift in the way that it was doing what I wanted to do all along and trying to do myself as a playwright.” As an actress, Gurira is best known for playing Michonne on The Walking Dead and Okoye in the Black Panther franchise. “They were bringing forth characters that we had never seen before.” This meant hiring a cultural advisor for Black Panther and working to be as authentic as possible. “The stakes were very high for us to hold nothing back. Thankfully, there was an open forum for that.” Want more? Steal my first book, Ink by the Barrel - Secrets From Prolific Writers right now for free. Director of Danai Gurira's The Convert, Ola Ince joins us as the first director to return to our tiny recording studio. We caught up on the very busy two and a half years Ola has had since she was last on Off Book where she spoke about her Genesis show, The Dutchman by Amiri Baraka. Naturally, Dan and Ola talk about the current YV main house show, The Convert based in what is now Zimbabwe in the late 1800s. Ola talks about how Gurira's text explores what it means to indoctrinate and colonise people and discusses how the creative team and cast work with the audience's big reactions to the show. We cover Ola's time spent as Associate Director for Tina the Musical and the development of 2017's Start Swimming with James Fritz and the YV's Taking Part team. Ola also talked to Dan about her recent Royal Court production Poet in Da Corner, a grime musical featuring Debris Stevenson and how they wanted to ensure they represented Grime as an art form, as well as broadly how power is addressed and feeds into to lots of Ola's recent work and the age old saying "the show must go on".
Talking Through Evolution On this episode 90 of The Walking Dead Talk Through, Mark and I discuss The Walking Dead Season 9 Episode 8, which is titled Evolution. This was written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, and directed by Michael E. Satrazemis. Mark loved this episode, but I didn’t. Some choices were bothering me this time around. SPOILER ALERT!!! SPOILER ALERT!!! The rest of this blog post requires a SPOILER WARNING!!! If you haven’t watched this week’s episode, then you probably should stop now. Surprising death… of the character and his jingle!!! I am not afraid to admit that I enjoyed my Jesus jingle. I enjoyed it a lot more than the character, so now that he’s gone in spectacular fashion, I am sad to see it go. Don’t get me wrong. I am sad to see Jesus go, but he never lived up to his hype. He was just another character on the show. I know he was a much-loved character from the comic book, but in the show, he was underutilized. I never felt like I got to know him very well. He was always in the background. He went out in a great sequence, in a surprising turn. It’s sad that he actually lived up to some of his potential in his last scene. What happened? Would you please just tell us what happened??? We get more of this hinting that there’s a big rift between Alexandria and the other communities. Strike that… Not between Alexandria, but Michonne and the other communities. Everyone is giving her the cold shoulder this episode: Tara, Enid, Dianne, and even Carol. Yes, they talk, but notice how they didn’t hug? Whatever happened, I’m starting to feel manipulated, much like I did before we found out the fate of Madison in Season 4 of Fear. I just wish they would tell us what happened. Too much teenage angst for a mid-season finale! The trials and tribulations of Henry were things we had seen before, both from Fear S3E3 TEOTWAWKI when Alicia met with the kids of Broke Jaw Ranch, and TWD S5E12 Remember, with Carl meeting Enid and Ron, and then later with Aiden and Nicholas’ walker plaything. I really didn’t need to see this stuff in the mid-season finale. Instead of getting a lot more information about this Michonne vs. everyone else that keeps being hinted at, we get more of Henry. It’s not that I don’t think we should have seen that – it was a timing issue. It could have waited for the back half. Instead, we have 2 1/2 months to wait for any of that to be explained; I could have really used that to be explained a lot more, and I wasn’t waiting for Henry’s story or the other angsty teens. By the way, using cats as bait is not cool. That kid is a serial killer wanna-be!!! Thankfully, ratings are up for Evolution… This week, TWD got a 1.96 in the 18-49, with 5.089 million, up from 1.80 and 4.794 million last week. That’s down from the two episodes previous to that, but some of that can be explained because of the long holiday. Charts below.
On episode 90 of The Walking Dead Talk Through, Mark and I discuss The Walking Dead Season 9 Episode 8, titled Evolution. Mark liked this one more than I did. I would have appreciated filling in the Michonne vs. everyone else, or so it seems, mystery rather than spending all this time with Henry and the angsty teens. By the way, during the hiatus, sign up to our Facebook group to stay in touch!

On episode 83 of The Walking Dead Talk Through, Mark and I discuss The Walking Dead Season 9 Episode 1, the season premiere, titled A New Beginning. Mark loved it. I didn't love it, but I liked it a lot. It was a setup episode, and a bit long, but there wasn't much I could find fault with, unlike the second half of the Fear season 4.

Talking Through A New Beginning! On this episode 83 of The Walking Dead Talk Through, Mark and I talk through The Walking Dead Season 9 Episode 1, the season premiere, which is titled A New Beginning. It was written by executive producer/showrunner Angela Kang and directed by executive producer Greg Nicotero. Mark loved it, and I liked it a lot. I didn’t have any major problems with it, except that it was a bit long and felt like a setup episode. It reminded me a lot of the Season 4 premiere, 30 Days Without an Accident. That said, I enjoyed this episode a lot more than most of what we had on Fear. What will we do without Gregory? RHETORICAL, OK??? We see Gregory at his most despicable, bringing booze to an alcoholic at his lowest point, and conspiring to kill Maggie, while she is with baby Hershel, then attempt to kill her with a knife. I understand why Maggie executed Gregory, but she pulled a page from Negan by doing it, providing no due process, circumventing the democracy she was just elected to rule. Ratings are way down… As you can see from these rating and viewer charts, created by me, you’ll see that the ratings and viewers are the worst since Season 1. Is it that people are leaving the show in droves, or are there other factors in play? Yes, viewers may not be returning, but there are several other reasons for a ratings decline. One is that AMC Premiere made the episode available a day early for subscribers of the service. Another is that it premiered a couple of weeks earlier than the last few seasons, so some may not have realized that the show was back. Another is that this trend is not isolated to The Walking Dead. Ratings are down, across the board. I do wonder if viewers will return with news of Andrew Lincoln’s departure. One point I want to clarify… One of my weak sauces was how Tammy Rose shifting blame from Maggie. It felt like the writers were grinding the gears a bit, forcing that conversation to tell the story. I said that my reaction to that was to say “OK…” That might have sounded dismissive, or worse – sexist – but Tammy Rose’s reaction to Maggie is completely understandable. I also buy her sentiment about the Saviors. It was the putting of those two things together that felt forced, not emotions that I didn’t buy or the delivery. Connecting them together felt forced to me. If Earl had said the same things, I’d have the same reaction. Get in your feedback! Movie Meltdown - Episode 429 (For our Patreon supporters.) This week the Super Series continues as we talk about Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther. And as we come to terms with awkwardly sitting next to people, we also mention… animation style, Chadwick Boseman, a lot of Minnie Mouse-themed things, technologically superior, Michael B. Jordan, dominate the sack race, Utilized everyone, the wall of wood, Lupita Nyong'o, a two-year-old with a Tesla car, the get out of jail free card, Danai Gurira, sci-fi, no-stick pans, hot dude of the moment, Martin Freeman, the center of the chicken is the calmest part, Rod Serling, snow-capped mountains, Daniel Kaluuya, on the rocks, as British goes, being vegetarian, the city, Letitia Wright, the colors, soul stone, nanobots, those aren’t our people, Angela Bassett, Red Sparrow, Captain America: Civil War, costumes, motion capture, making fish oil, you’re just a jackass alone in a room, Andy Serkis, contractually obligated to not shave, each of the tribes, we’re living in Black Mirror, that’s not the way a princess should behave, The Crow and and that sort of throws that whole fanboy theory out the window. Spoiler Alert: Spoilers for Black Panther… so hopefully by now you have already seen the movie. “I think that they go… 'this is a guy who’s doing good stuff. And given the smorgasbord of stuff we have, he can probably do this movie. But we’re not just going to throw him… and a bunch of money… and say go make a movie. We’re going to help him with as much stuff as we can, so that our final product… is good and is unique and different and not the same as every other superhero movie.' And I think that’s where you’ve got this mechanism working behind the scenes that Marvel has…”

He had a tough week, and we explain why we haven’t posted since last weekend. Just know we’re thrilled to dive back into things here with a two part Black Panther Movie Event Pod, which for the record, may also turn out to be an Early Bird 2018-19 Oscar Profile. We go off on tangents early and often, leave some bloopers in the episode cuz we think it's more amusing that way, and if it's possible, I think the few days away from recording leave us all the weirder. Part One is jam packed. We begin with the Cast & Crew bios and filmographies of Ryan Coogler, Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita N’yongo, and Danai Gurira. Then we gush over the rest of the dream cast including Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Andy Serkis, Sterling K. Brown, and break-out stars, Letitia Wright and Winston Duke. Our Production Notes cover some of the highlights from the promotional tour interviews from Coogler and the cast. Then we chronicle the long brewing development of the film from its early Wesley Snipes inception days to Ava Duvernay all the way to the launch of the Wakanda plotline in Captain America: Civil War and Ryan Coogler’s courtship with Marvel going into this film. No 1 has all the movie specs, including the eye popping box office and critical / audience reviews of the film, and we then dive into our review of the production values. We praise Rachel Morrison’s cinematography, the trademark Disney Marvel visual effects, Kendrick Lamar’s soundtrack, the rich tapestry of cultural influences affecting the costume and production designs, and then we do a non-spoiler analysis of the screenwriting. We have some quibbles throughout, but we’re mostly in awe of this landmark accomplishment. The rest of the review teases some of our best / worst scenes and comments on the film’s impact on our culture and the industry at large. Part 2 of our Black Panther review will be a spoiler filled look at the plot, and we’ll discuss the reverberations this movie event has had upon Hollywood and upon the zeitgeist at large. In retrospect, having the chance to digest the film for a bit longer has given us a greater perspective of this movie event, and we’re proud of the substantive discussion we have coming soon in Part 2. So do stay tuned. Our Best Original Screenplay, Director, and Picture category review pods are coming as soon as we can record, edit, and release. We’ll be grinding through the weekend and sending them out ASAFP for you all over the next week as we continue to sprint through this Oscar Season. We’ll have an Oscar Prediction pod, as well as the Mike Mike & Oscars, where we’ll give you our best films and performances on the year. As always, thank you for all your support throughout our first Award Season in the life of this podcast. We’re having a blast recording all these episodes, and if you can help us spread the word through social media or with some old school -tell a friend - word of mouth, then please do. We truly appreciate the help. When reality sucks, do watch movies with us. We’re Mike, Mike, and Oscar!

In Episode 75 of the Crooked Table Podcast, Robert Yaniz Jr. and Kai Yaniz devote an entire SPOILER-filled episode to review Black Panther, the 18th entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the final one to hit theaters before Avengers: Infinity War changes the MCU forever. The film marks the first Marvel Studios film featuring an African-American actor in the lead and is poised to shift the movie business itself with a cultural phenomenon of Wonder Woman proportions. But does director Ryan Coogler (Creed) deliver the boundary-breaking adventure that fans have been waiting for? Black Panther synopsis courtesy of Marvel Studios: Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther” follows T’Challa who, after the death of his father, the King of Wakanda, returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation to succeed to the throne and take his rightful place as king. But when a powerful old enemy reappears, T’Challa’s mettle as king—and Black Panther—is tested when he is drawn into a formidable conflict that puts the fate of Wakanda and the entire world at risk. Faced with treachery and danger, the young king must rally his allies and release the full power of Black Panther to defeat his foes and secure the safety of his people and their way of life. Change is part of life. Some changes are easy, others much less so. And when cultures collide, change is often dangerous, violent, and destructive. From the opening scenes of Danai Gurira’s astonishing period drama "The Convert" - set in Colonial Africa in the late 1800s - we are plunged into the middle of such a change, as the brutal dominance of the British Empire and the aggressive forward thrust of Christianity brings civilization to the people of Africa - whether they want it or not. The absorbing and emotionally powerful play - presented with sensitivity and passion by Marin Theatre Company in Mill Valley - follows a young Shona woman, whose conversion to Catholicism puts her at the precarious center of her country’s increasingly violent cultural divide. As the occupying English government imposes its rule, one of its tools of dominance is, of course, the church, its leaders waging war on local “pagan” practices, forcing codes of dress and behavior that seem bizarre to the locals, at the very least, and in some cases, represent a betrayal of centuries of local custom and religious tradition. In a transcendent performance by Katherine Renee Turner, young Jekesai - speaking no English, having never set foot inside a house with an actual floor of cement or wood - has sought shelter at the home of Mr. Chilford, a pro-English Shona convert who lives in the rapidly colonializing country of Rhodesia. Bare-breasted and terrified, Jekesai hopes to escape a forced marriage to an elderly villager who has purchased her to join his other wives, by trading a goat to her cruel uncle, played by L. Peter Callender with comically menacing perfection. Mr. Chilford has willingly traded in his native name and style of dress for proper Victorian substitutes. As a result, he’s incurred the suspicions of the locals, who call him bafu, or “traitor.” His chief allies are the well-tailored Chancellor - played with relish by Jefferson A. Russell - and Chancellor’s educated fiancée Prudence, an amazing character brought to life by the sensational Omoze Idehenre. Fond of the benefits of British culture they’ve adopted, they are only gradually realizing that they will never be treated as equal to the wealthy whites who are coming to their country in droves, and are rapidly losing the connection to their own people. And then there’s Jekesai. Her resourceful aunt Mai Tamba, a wonderful Elizabeth Carter, works as a servant to the deeply Catholic Mr. Chilford. It’s a job Mai Tamba keeps by feigning conversion to Christianity, half-reciting her prayers - “Hail Mary, full of ghosts!” - while secretly maintaining her old customs, hiding charms in the house, reciting prayers to her ancestors. She encourages Jekesai, whose quickly been dressed in “proper” attire and renamed Ester, to follow her example, never guessing the young woman will quickly take to Christianity with a passionate fervor surpassing even Chillford’s. As local anger against the British grows, Ester’s faith is put to increasingly impossible tests, her love of Jesus competing against her commitment to her family, her country and her most basic sense of identity. "The Convert," three hours long, told in three riveting acts, is gorgeously written by Gurira, best-known as an actress. She plays Michonne in the TV series The Walking Dead. This stunningly well-done production is directed with exceptional skill by director Jasson Minadakis. The story only stumbles in its final moments, with a perplexing twist that seems less the result of previous actions, and more a calculated attempt at giving the play some shock value. It’s a tiny issue in a play of monumental power and insight. The power of "The Convert," a must-see if ever there was one, is how it illustrates, with impeccable beauty, how the changes we experience can affect more than just ourselves. When who we are shifts, we also change our families, our communities, and sometimes, violently or peaceably, for good or for bad, we end up changing the whole world. "The Convert" runs Tuesday–Sunday through March 15 at Marin Theatre Company, marintheatre.org
