In this episode of the Build Hatch Podcast, we had the opportunity to hear from Adrian De Boucherville from After Dark Design. In this episode we talk about: Adrian started out in industrial design and shares the inspiration for starting on this career path. Adrian grew up in a family of designers and problem solvers so, industrial design was a natural fit for him. After a few years in the industry, Adrian became bored and shares how working for ‘Argyle House', in hospitality, led to the start of his adventure into restaurant and club refurbishments. Adrian then began to re-design and fit out other clubs and pubs around Newcastle. Rolling from one project into another, allowed Adrian to keep the same sub-contractors and keep the autonomy of the projects going. Quantifying budgets, working with heritage listed buildings and capturing the needs of a business. The value of good communication, compromise and loyalty. How Adrian uses his gut instinct and intuition to work out the costs of a project. The beginnings of After Dark Design. One of Adrian's first projects was the ‘Meet Restaurant'. The differences between commercial and residential design. In commercial work, there is a lot more room for risky design which Adrian loves. Working for clients who trust Adrian's creative flair and are willing to let him have freedom. Designing for the end-user and creating interactive spaces. Increasing the revenue of locations through layout and creative design. Outside of design, Adrian loves to ride his motorbike and is currently renovating his own home. Creating a client journey within a hair salon and having to pivot on location and parameters. Design, for Adrian, is more than just space – it's the functionality and flow. Adrian's hospitality experience has become a huge asset as he understands the needs of their patrons. How he has created profit for business' by changing a layout. COVID's impact on people's thinking and adapting to change.   Adrian's goal is to keep business' trading. If that means creating a temporary kiosk, he will do it! According to Adrian, research is the key to overcoming any challenging project. Being able to lean on other trades for advice has been essential and Adrian sees the value in teamwork. Adrian Tobey of Groundhogg talks about coming up with his business idea, building his MVP, and how he propelled his SaaS from poor performance to 30,000 MRR Adrian Tobey is the CEO and sole founder of Groundhogg, a market automation and customer relationship management WordPress Plugin that offers users a comprehensive integration in their WP environment. He talks to Geordie about his journey. What You'll Learn How Adrian discovered CRM How did Adrian's first product operate? Why developers should focus on building their own products The shoemaker's son's syndrome Lessons Adrian learned while working in the agency How Adrian funded his MVP How Adrian and his team launched Groundhogg Advantages of partnering with other professionals Why cheaper solutions hardly solve significant problems What strategy did Adrian use to attain his big break? In this Episode Groundhogg software is specially designed to cater to WordPress and digital marketing agencies. Adrian says he gained experience working as a WordPress developer. His primary focus was building WordPress websites for his clients, complete with layout design and page builders. He would also integrate the websites with effective marketing automation and CRM products such as Hubspot, Active Campaign, and Infusionsoft. Having worked with numerous small businesses, Adrian understands how much small companies struggle with implementing practical strategies with marketing automation software. Groundhogg does not handle small businesses. Find out why from the podcast.  Groundhogg's core business focuses on areas where they are likely to make the most profit margins, that is, WordPress and digital marketing agencies. Apart from requiring minimal support, Adrian says already established agencies are high spenders and always renew their licenses whether their clients thrive or not. Agencies are both persistent and consistent, making them easier to work with. According to Adrian, his business found him, and he gives a detailed explanation why. Listen to the podcast for this exciting story. Many businesses struggle with attracting the right audience to their websites and converting them into paying customers. At some point, Adrian and his dad were working to identify the right strategy to initiate and maintain a conversation between visitors and the business until they finally become paying customers. Adrian explains the most common method that many firms used in the past (some still do) to start conversations which you can find out about from the podcast. He also explains the method he and his dad used to start conversations with potential clients.  At 18 years old, Adrian was already a certified partner of Infusionsoft. During that period, he worked with numerous small businesses and companies. Apart from building thousands of campaigns, Adrian attended the funnel hacking conference to horn his skills. He would then develop his first product while still in University. Adrian learned to code from YouTube and later quit the university. Working on your own product is crucial for creating wealth and establishing yourself in the industry. According to Adrian, working for agencies is similar to the shoemaker's son's syndrome. Listen to the podcast to learn what the syndrome is all about. What is Adrian doing to improve his product? He says a combination of building features and listening to customer demands works for him. Working with the agency exposed Adrian to numerous lessons, which he uses to build his business. He narrates some of these lessons in the podcast.  At some point, Adrian realized that he was getting a raw deal from working for the agency and decided to quit. He gives details of this realization in this podcast. While he is no longer involved with the agency, he agrees that he can identify with most agencies' problems.    Quitting employment can be an easy process, but surviving after that and running a personal business can be difficult. Adrian borrowed some money from his grandfather, which he intended to depend on until his business stabilized. Being at the right place at the right time is crucial for an entrepreneur. Adrian says he spent lots of time in areas where small businesses and agencies were, like Facebook groups. Here, he noticed the frustrations many companies were facing. Listen to the podcast to find out what these were. Adrian knew he could offer solutions for all those problems without fail.  When Adrian and his team launched Groundhogg, they faced numerous challenges. He explains the strategy he used to attract regular customers. This is a long and detailed process filled with multiple failures that you cannot afford to miss. He would later devise the right strategy to develop an audience and create a constant flow of customers, which he would later convert into revenue. Listen to the podcast and learn about it. At some point, Adrian attended an event where he discussed his cash flow and revenue problems. Listen to the podcast to find out the solutions he got from the professionals in attendance. He also explains how he leveraged those lessons to get his big break. Adrian concludes the podcast by encouraging listeners to reach him with any questions they may have. He says he's very reachable and ready to assist where possible.  Resources Ygroundhogg.io Adrian Tobey LinkedIn Adrian Tobey Twitter

This episode begins with an update on my anti-racism education and what I’m learning. I share about the book, Fearing the Black Body by Sabrina Strings and how I’m learning how the body, and specifically the female body, was objectified and used as justification for slavery (and later became the root of diet culture). I also took at anti-racism course for wellness professionals this week by Chrissy King, where I was reminded of why wellness is for everyone but not always accessible for all because of oppression and discrimination. I learned how to become a better ally and the course helped me put into action changes we will make in my business to ensure we are an ally today and all days going forward. Today’s podcast is a long time coming, we are finally having a conversation about CBD oil!. I first became a fan of CBD oil when I started using it for my dog to improve his anxiety and seizures, and since have used it for the entire family as part of our wellness routines. There’s a lot of misinformation out there about what exactly CBD is (no it won’t make you high!) and sourcing it correctly can be tricky, too. That’s why I’m so excited to have the founders of Ned, Ret and Adrian, on the podcast today. In this episode we share: How Adrian and Ret started the CBD oil company, Ned and why they are obsessed with making the highest quality, full spectrum CBD you can find The science behind the benefits to CBD and using CBD as a holistic first line of defense How CBD is sourced from the hemp plant and what makes Ned different from other CBD oil companies Easy ways to add CBD into our daily habits and common ailments it can support Ret and Adrian share about the Cycle Collection for the monthly cycle that contain CBD and botanical blends How Ret and Adrian practice wellness without obsession Learn more about Ned and try their products for yourself here!   About today’s podcast sponsors: Thank you to BLUBlox for sponsoring today’s episode. Ned produces the highest quality full spectrum CBD oil, extracted from organically grown hemp plants in Colorado. One of the things I love most about Ned is they do not cut corners in their production. Their CBD oil is made from gentle, slow extraction with no high temperatures or high pressure, and zero isolates and synthetic ingredients. I am fascinated by traditions and the culture of food. Across the globe, for thousands of years, food is connected deeply into how we live, how we take care of ourselves and how we enjoy life. Tradition isn’t about chasing the next “it” food, the swaying nutrition research based on the newest study and it’s not about a one fits all approach for your calorie allotment for the day. And thats why I’m a huge fan of herbalism, and my go to for any herbs I take- New Chapter, including their new daily multiherbals. If you’re an active member in the XY community, you’ve probably seen her name start to pop up regularly, you may have even connected with her some way, somehow. But what do you actually know about XY’s newest team member, the new Community Manager – Emily Blanch? Experience wise, Emily is a mixed bag of paraplanning, online media and writing, but she is totally in her element when she is delivering an unforgettable client or customer experience. She can’t tell a story without using her hands and if she could, she’d climb to a tall building somewhere and shout it out to the world that travelling (at some point in your life) is without a doubt the best thing you can do for your health, your wealth and your happiness. Amongst the travelling stories, the clichés (all of the clichés) and some of the amazing things XY Adviser has coming up this year, here’s our favourite highlights: Why travelling is sometimes the best career advice you can give Clayton’s greatest success emotionally with clients as a financial adviser Why a lifestyle change can open up a world of new opportunities The brand-new look and feel of XY The big names we are determined to get on the XY Podcast this year How Adrian is looking to combine the skillsets of accountants and advisers to maximise the value provided to clients And what does beer and financial advice have to do with each other? If travelling has ever been on your radar, we’re pretty sure Emily’s stories will have you wanting to book a ticket overseas now (apologies to employers everywhere). But if getting an employee back with a fresh perspective, a new outlook and a sense of accomplishment and motivation, we think that’s a pretty good return on investment. P.S. The Business of Giving No contracts. No selling. No price. That's how today's guest, Adrian Hoppel, a Philadelphia-based web designer, does "business." Instead, he simply gives his work away - as a gift - and expects nothing in return. Yet instead of being taken advantage of, Adrian's business has flourished. Last year, he worked on 25 projects and ended up getting paid more per project than he would have had he used fixed pricing. And less than half way through this year, Adrian's already more than tripled his total projects from last year (in fact, he's had to hire multiple employees...and get this: they ALL work in the gift economy). And the requests for his gift-based work continue to flow in. In today's broadcast, we talk all about the Gift Economy, Pay What You Want pricing, how to build and manage a team in the gift economy, and even touch on Adrian's military background and how it's helped him in his new efforts. Seriously, this is one of the most fun interviews I've done and Adrian's story is incredible. You need to listen for your own good :) What Adrian Hoppel and I talk About: Why Adrian left corporate work to pursue his dream of living and working in the gift All about the Gift Economy (and what that means from a practical standpoint) How a little book called Sacred Economics changed Adrian's life How Adrian has tripled his business in just a few months and how he's managing it all What it takes to create a gift-based business where no money or exchange is expected (you're going to be blown away by this, I promise) How Adrian leads a team of employees using gift-economy principles How Adrian once argued with a client for being TOO generous in return for his work (and why he's stopped doing that...good choice!)
