Has your home loan been steadily increasing over the last couple of years? Are you about to come off a very low interest rate? We speak to financial planner Daniel Brown who shares some golden nuggets about what you can do to ride the interest rate rise.If you've got a mortgage, like most Australians, you're no doubt facing increasing financial stress at the moment. Not only are home loan interest rates steadily rising, the cost of living is increasing too - whether that's the weekly groceries in the trolley, petrol in your car and just about everything else."It's not a sexy topic, and it's something we'd like to avoid. It's probably why most Australians don't get advice. They put it in the "too hard basket". But this is the time to do the opposite. To be prepared, to get ready, because it's not going to stop anytime soon. Inflation is very high. The only lever the Reserve Bank has to put interest rates up, and I suspect that will continue. That impact will be significant in the short to medium term (next two years). We are really going to feel it. Preparation is key." - Daniel Brown, My Money SortedIn this episode of The Parenting Couch podcast, Rachel and Sarah sit down with money guru Daniel Brown from My Money Sorted, who shares his recommendations about how to ride the interest rate wave... and what you can do now to prepare yourself for the future. In this episode, you'll learnWhat you can do right now if you know your fixed rate is coming to an end soonAt what point should you negotiate your next rate?Ways to temporarily reduce your mortgage paymentsWhether you should speak to your existing bank first, or use a brokerIf you are refinancing, are you better to go onto a fixed or variable rate? What to do if you can't pay your mortgage anymoreIf you have money in the bank, is now a good time to invest?Should you talk to your kids about money and how much things cost?Ways to create extra income to service your loanAbout Daniel Brown (My Money Sorted)Daniel is a qualified financial planner with 20 years of experience working in financial services. He is an award winning financial planner and he helps people to have a good relationship with money. We talked about the importance of learning and the current generation’s financial challenges. Should you lend money to your children? Are you doing them a favor or setting them up for disaster? We answer all that and more here in this episode of “Get to the Contest”!Get to the Contest Takeaways!Ignore the “barbecue talk”It is important to recognise the value of a good advice and a great adviser. Often, the barbecue talk we have with friends are distractions and disasters waiting to happen. Seek advice from people you look up to, who are expert in their own field and most especially, someone you trust. Make it a goal to learn every day, and that you surround yourself with people smarter and more experienced than you are. Keep learning because when you stop, you’ll soon be overtaken and irrelevant.Do the right thing by your children. You love your children and you want the best for them. Of course. But are you sure you are doing the right thing when it comes to loaning them money? There are a few simple questions to reflect on before imparting them with the responsibility of a loan. Are they responsible enough? Can you, as the lender, afford it? Can the current circumstances of your children enable them to afford to pay the loan? These are just a few questions you must be able to answer before taking this big step. If you skip all the questions, you might be doing your children more harm than good.Protect yourself. With every financial decision in your career and life, you have to take the extra mile in making sure you are protecting yourself. Make sure all transactions are transparent and that there is a process in all that you do. Leave a paper trail and seek advice from the experts when you do a big financial decision.Ray Jaramis’s Get to the Contest:"I think I'm just conscious of not going with the herd, so to speak. Often, I think it can be valuable if you take a step back from what you're doing in your daily life, and maybe just challenge yourself on what your career path is.The critical points in my career have been when I've taken a step back, and had a bit of a think about what I'd ideally like with my work, and where I'd like to see that headed in the future.

Amongst the travelling stories, the clichés (all of the clichés) and some of the amazing things XY Adviser has coming up this year, here’s our favourite highlights: Why travelling is sometimes the best career advice you can give Clayton’s greatest success emotionally with clients as a financial adviser Why a lifestyle change can open up a world of new opportunities The brand-new look and feel of XY The big names we are determined to get on the XY Podcast this year How Adrian is looking to combine the skillsets of accountants and advisers to maximise the value provided to clients And what does beer and financial advice have to do with each other? 2017 has been a year full of surprises, changes and announcements. We saw a world divided over the inauguration of President Trump, the Australian Government announced a royal commission within the banking sector and cryptocurrencies appear to have become a household term overnight. For the XY community, 2017 has undoubtedly been the biggest year yet with an increasing presence of nearly 1,500 enthusiastic members driving the positive evolution of financial advice. With the Facebook group evolving into a central intelligence hub for advisers, the podcast getting a professional makeover, a new membership site on its way and events that are now moving out of Sydney and into a national agenda, it’s fair to say that when it comes to XY in 2018, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet! To reflect on the year that was and to discuss the exciting things ahead; Clayton, Adrian, Ben and Ray all got together to shoot the breeze on things like: The hype around Bitcoin and why people want to invest in something ‘sexy’ (but probably shouldn’t) Ideas and strategies Ben brought back from Fincon and why you should include content within a service based business to stay relevant Everything the XY community can look forward to in 2018 Different practices and systems that are working (and not working) in advice businesses What the next toy of financial advice will be in 2018 (did someone say Big Data?)  …plus loads more and with plenty of laughs! XY Adviser started when a handful of people got together and asked how they could best serve their clients and the industry they love. Today, the success of XY Adviser is the result of an entire community who understands the value and benefit that comes with sharing knowledge and ideas and supporting each other. 2017 has been great, but we have a feeling 2018 is going to be EPIC! Enjoy.

You’ve heard the latest industry buzzwords popping up left, right and centre – disruption, innovation, Fintech. But what do that actually mean and more importantly, how do they relate and what benefit are they to financial advisers? Back from a recent expedition across the seas to the annual Fincon Conference and jumping on the opportunity to further understand the people and technologies that have changed the world in Silicon Valley, Pieta Diamantidis, Co-Founder of Caboodle Financial Services and aspiring ‘bionic adviser’ helps us to understand how far we’ve come since the first ‘tech bubble’, to what’s happening (or not happening) in the industry now and where this ever-evolving digital space is headed. As this informative (and energetic) discussion coincides with the upcoming XY Adviser event ‘Silicon Valley on Bridge Street’; Peita, Ray & Adrian delve down the rabbit hole of some interesting and thought provoking topics such as: Looking for ideas with applied innovation that can be effectively implemented to create real and lasting improvements to clients and/or staff and practice efficiencies Why focusing on ‘creating’ the marketplace around an idea and then building the product is much more effective than the other way around Companies in the tech space capturing psychological data with A.I. and how financial advisers can implement this into their advice proposition Startups creating the tools to help advisers bridge the gap between data capture and the human connection Looking for the next ‘Hoover’ idea and why it needs to change the way people engage with their money…   Identifying such interesting and at times controversial topics, Peita is excited as ever to expand on this by asking the hard-hitting questions with guest speakers Joel Robbie (Nod Money), Ben Heap (H2 Ventures) and Clayton Daniel (Sprout Super) at next week’s event. If you have a question surrounding the disruptive Fintech space, feel free to shoot it through to contact@xyadviser.com and Peita be sure to address them on the night. Or better yet, grab your ticket for the event and ask the experts yourself. It’s going to be a cracker of a night!
