I am thrilled to have Candace Molatore on the podcast today. I have followed Candace on Instagram for quite awhile now, and I have to say I'm obsessed! She is beautiful, with impeccable style, but more importantly- her words and writing speak to me so much. She's like that calm, nurturing and honest friend that you cling on to every word she says to learn and do better as a person yourself. Candace Molatore is a Self-Love Advocate, Branding Consultant and Photographer based in Portland, OR. With a passion for building community, Candace uses her photography and writing skills to broadcast the message of self confidence, body positivity and inclusivity online. She shares her interests, inspiration, tips and everyday life with her audience regularly through social media. With a modest but strong following behind her, Candace continues to spread the message of inclusivity and self-love with high-quality visuals, a strong work ethic and a mission to make everyone feel empowered in their own skin. Today's podcast sponsor is super special. When I approached Candace to come on the show, I mentioned a charity donation to support a cause that was important to Candace to say thank you for her time coming on the show. Candace also met my donation, and suggested that I share about the charity as the sponsor of the episode, and I thought it was such a brilliant suggestion! So, today I am honored to tell you about the Jim Collins Foundation. The mission of the Jim Collins Foundation is to provide financial assistance to transgender people for gender-affirming surgeries. The Jim Collins Foundation recognizes that not every transgender person needs or wants surgery to achieve a healthy transition. But for those who do, gender-affirming surgeries are an important step in their transition to being their true selves. However, access to gender-affirming surgery is impossible for most. Discrimination against transgender people is so prevalent that many transgender people struggle to survive, never mind save for surgery costs. Even for those who have health insurance, coverage is systematically denied. Many insurance policies contain a “Transsexual Exclusion Clause” which excludes all medical procedures related to a person's transgender status. For many transgender people, access to surgery is out of reach. The Jim Collins Foundation raises money to fund gender-affirming surgeries for those transgender people who need surgery to live a healthy life, but have no ability to pay for it themselves. We recognize that for those people who require surgery for a healthy gender transition, lack of access to surgery may result in hopelessness, depression, and sometimes, suicide. The Jim Collins Foundation is a community-based initiative promoting the self-determination and empowerment of all transgender people. Click here to learn more about the Jim Collins Foundation and donate. In this episode we discuss: Candace shares her story and life's journey leading her to the work she does today as a self love advocate, branding consultant and photographer What impacted Candace in the past with lack of self love and her tips for how she changed the narrative internally of her own self worth The origins of the body positive movement and how to respect its origins How can we be more respectful to the challenges Black women face of feeling body positive and embracing wellness Candace's tips on using social media as a way to uplift ourselves, rather than compare and judge ourselves How we can as a collective whole be more inclusive to all body sizes How we vote with our money, and choosing brands that are inclusive to all body sizes How Candace built a wardrobe and style that fits her body and represents her personality How Candace practices wellness without obsession Learn more: Candace's Instagram account Candace's website Candace on staying confident in swimwear Candace on tips for confidence Brand mentioned in the episode, Girlfriend Collective Resources for you: Learn more about our services at Nourishing Minds Nutrition. It's been a long time since we last had a podcast episode on intermittent fasting and I thought it was due time to an update, review of the research and to have an honest conversation with you about your need for rules. It's common and totally okay to have questions about what is intuitive eating aligned and what is not when it comes to health trends, and even nutrition research. Because intuitive eating isn't anti-health or even anti-nutrition, and...ALSO...Ultimately, this is your body, and your choice, so if you decide intermittent fasting is for you then it's your choice to make, but I'm hoping I can give you another perspective on this super popular trend. Let's first describe what is intermittent fasting. Intermittent Fasting (IF) is a diet regimen that cycles between brief periods of fasting, with either no food or significant calorie reduction, and periods of unrestricted eating.” In the episode we discuss: What is intermittent fasting and the different types of IF The reported benefits of intermittent fasting Considerations when reviewing the research on IF Potential cons to practicing IF (side effects) The weight centric and diet focus of the proponents of IF Why IF is inappropriate if you struggle with your relationship with food Why we don't recommend IF for our clients at Nourishing Minds Nutrition More insight into intermittent fasting: Kelsey's blog post Previous podcast episode on intermittent fasting Resources for you: Learn more about our services at Nourishing Minds Nutrition. I'm going to start this episode off with a rant of how bad diet culture is right now. I live in my non-diet bubble so much that sometimes I forget HOW BAD it is out there. I'm continuing to realize how prevalent diet culture is and how much we need to keep spreading our message. And I get that intuitive eating sounds like a different world. And that's because it is. It's about behavior change and self care actions instead of specific actions of weight loss. It's a world that doesn't exist in extremes and rules and that is HARD for us because that's what we expect these days of diets. But it wasn't always this way. We once had a world where we didn't view foods as something to feel guilty about or induce shame. Once upon a time, mind body knowledge around food WAS the norm because we didn't have an internalized diet mentality impacting it. And today I want to dig into the mind body knowledge part of intuitive eating as I know this can be one of the harder parts to figure out. But the Mind body knowledge is one of my favorite parts of intuitive eating. It opens the door to so much with your eating, and just how you live your life. So what exactly is the mind body connection? The mind body connection in its most basic definition is that your mind and body are connected, and affected by each other. Our mental state can affect how we hold tension in the body, the trauma response of the body and the pain our bodies experience. And at the same time, our body can communicate to our minds its needs like when we are feeling anxious (think palms sweating or tightness in the throat), when we need to pee, when we are hungry, when we need to sleep or when we feel happy. In this episode we discuss: Ways to build mind body knowledge What you can use the mind body knowledge for with eating and in life How this pertains to the IE principle, discover the satisfaction factor How satisfaction and pleasure with food is enhanced with mind body knowledge Allowing for pleasure in all areas of your life, how this leads to purpose Reflective questions to leave off this episode asking yourself Episodes referenced: Intuitive Eating Principles Part 1 and Part 2, my favorite principle of Intuitive Eating Resources for you: Learn more about our services at Nourishing Minds Nutrition. Wellness without obsession is our philosophy here at the Nourishing Women Podcast, and we have yet to have an episode dedicated to the concept! I thought today was the perfect day to share what the philosophy means because we just launched our wellness without obsession shop, which I’ll share about later in this episode. In this episode we will discuss why being food & wellness obsessed is holding you back, what defines wellness without obsession, and the key main messages of this philosophy and examples of a wellness lover vs a wellness obsessor. My team and I are so excited to share that we have launched a Wellness Without Obsession Shop. We are taking the work we do in our practice, and creating programs and online courses so we can help more people in our areas of expertise. In this shop, you’ll find Permission Stage Playbook and the Body Image Reset, as well as courses that are coming in 2021 such as the Digestive Freedom Foundations and the Period Playbook, and even physical products and membership site! My personal work is with orthorexia, and as a result we see a ton of HA clients and use No Period Now What as a recommendation for our clients to read while we work together. I find people with orthorexia can use this scientific understanding of what’s going on in their bodies to focus on recovery. A lot of my work is focused on how exactly to eat more and exercise less, which sounds simple but is incredibly complex. But for today’s episode I really want to dive into the bodily processes and science behind what is happening in your body when your period is missing, which is why I asked the main author of this incredible resource, Dr. Nicola Rinaldi to come on the show today. Nico has a PhD in computational biology from MIT. After graduating she worked for a biotechnology company while pursuing her dreams of a family, which were thwarted by a diagnosis of hypothalamic amenorrhea (no periods). Eighteen months of trying to conceive followed. She spent hours on research, using the knowledge gained to work on recovery. Concurrently, she tried the medical route to pregnancy, with multiple doctor visits, injections, and ultrasounds resulting only in failure. Ultimately, she was able to achieve a natural pregnancy. Since that time, Nicola has shared her knowledge of the path to recovery, helping hundreds of others achieve their dreams of womanhood and pregnancy. She has spent the last three years as a stay-at-home mom, with her three boys, Antony, Timmy, and Cameron, while writing this comprehensive guide to recovery. In this episode we discuss: What inspired Nico to dedicate so much of her career to HA and then writing the book, No Period, Now What. What exactly is HA and what’s going on in your body, from your hypothalamus, to how this impacts hormones and even how nerve cells are all involved, when you lose your period Exploring if body fat has to be low to lose your period PCOS vs HA, the similarities and differences and how to ensure you get an accurate diagnosis and treatment based off diagnosis Recommendations on exercise breaks vs reducing exercise to get your period back How Nico practices wellness without obsession Learn more about Dr. Nicola Rinaldi: No Period Now What website Instagram account Free chapter on PCOS vs. HA This episode is brought to you by my holiday survival guide. Healthy body image isn't about focusing on what your body looks like...or even trying necessarily to change that. Sure, it could be a byproduct of this work for some people. But for many of you, that may not even be a goal. And believe it or not, that's okay! As you’ll learn in this episode, healthy body image is less about your looks and more about practicing body respect. It's learning how to treat your body well, even on your bad body image days. Inside the Body Image Reset you'll receive: The Body Image Reset e-book and workbook, walking you through mindset shifts, dialogue practice and actions to take to build better body image. 5 Lessons on how to let go of the desire to change your body. In today’s episode I am reposting one of our favorite Tuesday podcast episodes all about honoring your hunger and fullness. One of the most common complaints I hear from my listeners, online course students and clients is annoyance with your hunger and your body’s cues to eat. I want to encourage you to begin questioning why you feel that way. Why is it that we find a body’s signal to us annoying? Desire to question it? Or straight up don’t listen to it? Diet culture is the culprit! Honoring hunger isn’t “giving in”, it’s body respect! It’s self care! It’s listening to your body and one of the first steps to that mind body connection. In this episode, we will review the hunger and fullness scale and primal hunger to build that mind body knowledge for intuitive eating. Because it’s so important to listen to your body’s cues! When primal hunger sets in, this is our body’s survival mechanisms taking over. While it can be frustrating to not feel well, remember this is your body loving and protecting you. This is not a loss of willpower, its biology. We want to avoid getting to the point of primal hunger if we can, because it doesn’t make you feel good physically and mentally and can often lead to what feels like over eating and binge eating. In this episode I’ll also review with you avoiding common pitfalls with intuitive eating, including turning the hunger fullness scale into a diet. This episode is brought to you by my holiday survival guide. This free e-book will help you enjoy and celebrate the holiday season, food included. Click here to grab yours! Today we are so excited to have the CEO of Health-Ade Kombucha, our favorite kombucha company, on the show! Daina Trout co-founded Health-Ade Kombucha in 2012 alongside her husband, Justin Trout, and best friend, Vanessa Dew. Since the beginning, the trio has been committed to brewing the best tasting and highest quality kombucha on the market. Trout first learned how to brew kombucha during her tenure at Tufts University, where she earned Masters’ degrees both in Nutrition and Public Health after receiving her BS from Georgetown University. During that time, she also developed her personal philosophy that health is less about science, and more abou what makes you feel good and happy. After graduation, Trout moved to Los Angeles to accept a position working in pharmaceuticals but continued to cultivate an interest in holistic and “real” food that fuels a hard-working lifestyle. Trout funneled this energy into an entrepreneurship club she formed with Justin and Vanessa to explore ways they could combine their diverse backgrounds into a successful business venture; the result, Health-Ade Kombucha. Over the course of the last seven years, Trout has nurtured what started as a small production and niche product into what has become a national brand that is sold at 30,000 grocery stores and health food markets nationwide, including major retailers like Target, Whole Foods and Costco. Today, Health-Ade is currently the fastest growing brand in its category for three years in a row and is projected to significantly expand its business nationwide each year under her leadership as CEO. In this episode we discuss: How Daina, her husband and best friend started Heath-Ade Kombucha What exactly kombucha is and how it is made What are the benefits of fermented foods like kombucha What makes Health-Ade kombucha different from others on the market and why it’s taking over the grocery stores What Dana believes is the #1 skill or characteristic that has supported her to be a successful entrepreneur How Dana practice wellness without obsession This episode is brought to you by my holiday survival guide. Today’s episode is an important conversation that NEEDS to be in podcast form. I’ve touched on thin privilege on Instagram posts and with guests on the show, but I wanted an entire episode dedicated to the subject. Here’s what I want you to understand about thin privilege: Your body image struggles are real no matter your size. Your experience and struggles are real and valid. But we have to be willing to look at our privileges in all situations, body image and how this impacts our relationship with food, included. There are three types of fat phobia, that I’ve learned from Virgie Tovar (click here to listen to her episode on the podcast). A person in a thin body can experience INTRApersonal struggles as we all fear becoming fat in our society that tells us it's the worst thing in the world to happen to our bodies. But a thin body won’t experience interpersonal and institutionalized fat phobia. This helps explain thin privilege in a meaningful way- that yes, your experiences are real, but these are two major areas you likely will never experience or understand if you live in a thin body. I used to promote myself as the “body positive dietitian” and I now realize how much of a mistake on wording that was. That was taking a movement that wasn’t created for me. And honestly ignorance on my part thinking me as a size 10 was not accepted. I hope this episode helps you see that your experiences are real and true and you are not alone in not accepting your body. Yet, as with any privilege we hold, it’s not your fault or something you should feel guilty about. It’s about recognizing that there’s some experiences we may never be able to understand. I’m so honored to have Davida Lederle, a friend of mine and someone I admire DEEPLY for her integrity and authenticity on the online space on the podcast today. Davida is the owner and creator of the blog, the Healthy Maven. The Healthy Maven is a multi-channel health and wellness platform helping women to live healthFULLY rather than living for their health. Over the past 6 years Davidas has shifted her belief that healthy living is about extending the years of your life, to instead extending the quality of your life. Life should be about prioritizing your health, but not at the sake of living your life. That’s why she believes in living healthFULLY. Wellness can exist without obsession, and we love that she shares this belief that is the foundation of everything we do here at Nourishing Women Podcast! In this episode we discuss: Davida gives us a life update to what she has been up to since she was last on the show May 2018 Davida’s 8 month Instagram break and what she learned from this experience Different revenue sources an online business can have Why Davida left the sponsorship model for her blog and business Tips for avoiding the comparison trap on social media Davida’s tips on swapping to green makeup products, why you may consider doing this What technically counts a product as considered “safe” or “green” makeup Davida’s favorite green beauty products How Davida practices wellness without obsession Learn more about Davida: The Healthy Maven website Learn about natural skincare from Davida’s blog Davida’s green beauty shop on her website Important information for you! I know you, my friend. I know you love all things health, wellness and nutrition. But the real truth? You obsess over it. Fear it. And deprive yourself of true enjoyment. You’re here, listening to the show because you are ready for change. In today’s episode, I invite you to reflect and identify your personal reasons you fear making peace with food. My hope and goal is by identifying your personal barriers or what scares you, you can determine if that’s value based or not for you to continue having an unhealthy relationship with food. So many of these barriers come from this belief you have to be hypervigilant with your health in order to have health. But is this true, or is this diet culture influenced? In this episode, I share examples of black and white thinking around health versus a gray area perspective that we so deeply believe in here on my show and in my business. I recently shared a post on perfectionism and the unhealthy obsession with eating healthy and it resonated with SO many of you, so I wanted to share more in depth in today’s episode. In the post I shared, that I’m not sure I’ve ever worked with a client that’s had orthorexia and didn’t also seriously struggle with perfectionism, people pleasing and fear of lack of control. I also know this too deeply from my own personal experience. My desire to be the “perfect” dietitian made me *attempt* to perfect my eating habits more and more until I got to a point where everything I ate made me anxious. When you dive into the clean eating world you can almost always find something “wrong” with what you’re eating. I share this because perfectionism is at the root of why your desires to live a healthy lifestyle have become obsessive and dogmatic, reaching the point of disordered behaviors. I also share because the same issue that gets us in to this mess, it also what tends to prevent us from seeking healing and/or asking for help to recover. If you too struggle with the desire to be perfect and perfect your eating habits (the breeding ground of orthorexia) I want you to know that part of this process, the healing part, is going to BE MESSY. It’s A OKAY if for a period of time your eating habits look far from what you think is “healthy” to give yourself the time and space to heal and loosen the grips of your unhealthy obsession with eating healthy. Your body is resilient. I promise it can handle if you don’t eat what you think is enough veggies (or sub in whatever food you’re fearful of NOT consuming) for a period of time. As I shared in my post, The messy parts are where are the magic happens. So if you end of eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches instead of kale salads with every trendy superfood possible, I promise you’ll be okay. I promise you can trust your body. I promise the messy parts lead to your goals of food freedom and flexibility. In today’s podcast episode I share why it’s critical to work through perfectionism, how it shows up not only in our healing journeys but also in the health and wellness world, and how to work towards imperfect actions. Remember, self love can also come with self awareness, and these imperfect actions are how you’ll move towards that gray area of health and wellness. Are you ready to move on from food and wellness obsession and instead towards food flexibility, food freedom and intuitive eating? Then my free workshop, the Food Obsession to Food Flexibility Workshop, was created just for you! I’ve been thinking about how I can support you with the final months left in 2020. I know SO many people feel as if 2020 has been a wash, and that nothing good has come out of it. But the eternal optimist in me wants to challenge that. Or maybe instead invite you to consider a different ending to 2020. The vast majority of you that are here, tuning in every week to listen to the show, are here because you’re trying to understand how your clean eating program and lifestyles have manifested into strict rules, obsession and stress and anxiety. You’re trying to learn how you got so food obsessed, and how to move instead towards food freedom and food flexibility. But what does that even mean? And how do you achieve that? You’ve realized either recently that you may have a disordered relationship with food, or maybe you’ve known for a while, but you’ve been going at this healing journey alone and as a result- confused, conflicted, overwhelmed and unsure of what intuitive eating actually looks like. Is it really just listening to your body? How do you do that without rules, timing your eating, controlling what’s allowed and not allowed? If you give yourself unconditional permission to eat, will you just forever gain weight? Will you only eat pizza and ice cream for the rest of your life? I LOVE that you have these type of questions and concerns and I want you to have a safe space to learn the answers to these questions and really get clarity about what it means to practice food flexibility, what intuitive eating will allow for in your life and how to find that gray area of health and wellness, letting go of the extremes so you can practice our philosophy of wellness, without obsession. So I’m hosting a totally FREE workshop, called the Food Obsession to Food Flexibility Workshop in order to do just that. The purpose of this workshop is to help you: Understand signs and symptoms you may be too obsessed with clean eating and having the perfect healthy lifestyle Walk you through how this impacts your life and how you’re showing up in the world Help you move from food obsession to food flexibility (so you can have freedom in food and in all areas of life!) Receive clarity of what a healthy relationship with food, exercise, health and wellness looks like How to move towards this less extreme version of health, where health enhances your quality of life, not IS your life Learn why intuitive eating is the foundation of our wellness without obsession philosophy Remove all the confusion and overwhelm about intuitive eating, that way you can confidently become an intuitive eater The Food Obsession to Food Flexibility Workshop will be held NEXT week with three dates available to sign up: Thursday, October 15th at 12:30pm and 6:30pm and Saturday, October 17th at 10am EST. This episode is quite different from my usual episodes! What started off as a quest to understand insight into the diet recommendations of the health and wellness world, and an episode that was going to explain why “lifestyles” are definitely diets in disguise, turned into an episode of me sharing my honest, real thoughts on why I’m so angry and upset at the messages of “lifestyles” to follow. While the internet and social media have added such value into our lives, it also means anyone can sell their messages to you. From influencers, to health coaches, dietitians and doctors...it seems these days everyone has their own “plan” for you to follow for you to feel your best, i.e. lose weight. It’s frustrating, because this is the very reason orthorexia has skyrocketed over the past ten years. I share in this episode how perfectionists can go from “lifestyle” plan to orthorexia, and how it’s not your fault and you are not to blame. I share the common thread each of these “lifestyles” have in common, so you can be aware of the messages as you intake them. Overall, I want you to leave off this episode better understanding that these lifestyles have co-opted intuitive eating language and are definitely diets, and how this can lead turn into disordered eating, eating disorders and orthroexia. I couldn’t be more excited about today's podcast episode! Today on the show I have one of the amazing dietitians at my virtual private practice, Nourishing Minds Nutrition, Kelsey Pukala back on the show. Kelsey is an incredible non-diet dietitian and I am so honored to have her (and Megan, our other dietitian who will be on the show next week!) as part of our team supporting you in your goals with intuitive eating and wellness without obsession. Kelsey is so great at breaking down complex conversations into an easy to understand way, so I asked Kelsey on the show to discuss how the thyroid is impacted with eating disorders and disordered eating. In this episode we discuss: Kelsey gives an update of what she has been up to lately What exactly is the thyroid and what it does in the body What a healthy functioning thyroid looks like How eating disorders and disordered eating disrupts the thyroid and how this impacts other hormones in the body Signs and symptoms that something may be wrong with your thyroid What kind of lab tests should be ordered and what indicates altered lab values for your thyroid What healing your thryoid looks like in application How Kelsey practices wellness without obsession Kelsey’s past episodes on the podcast: Episode 100: Disordered eating as a root cause to digestive issues Episode 113: What happens to your body when you lose your period Intuitive eating during the holidays Lab work to order if you are concerned about your thyroid, we recommend not only looking at TSH but also T3, T4, reverse T3 and thyroid antibodies. This is considered a full thyroid panel. While optimal ranges of TSH are technically anywhere from 1-4, a woman in their fertile years should usually have a TSH range of 1-2. I’m going to start this episode off with a rant of how bad diet culture is right now. I live in my non-diet bubble so much that sometimes I forget HOW BAD it is out there. I’m continuing to realize how prevalent diet culture is and how much we need to keep spreading our message. And I get that intuitive eating sounds like a different world. And that’s because it is. It’s about behavior change and self care actions instead of specific actions of weight loss. It’s a world that doesn’t exist in extremes and rules and that is HARD for us because that’s what we expect these days of diets. But it wasn’t always this way. We once had a world where we didn’t view foods as something to feel guilty about or induce shame. Once upon a time, mind body knowledge around food WAS the norm because we didn’t have an internalized diet mentality impacting it. In this episode we discuss: Ways to build mind body knowledge What you can use the mind body knowledge for with eating and in life How this pertains to the IE principle, discover the satisfaction factor How satisfaction and pleasure with food is enhanced with mind body knowledge Allowing for pleasure in all areas of your life, how this leads to purpose Reflective questions to leave off this episode asking yourself Episodes referenced: Intuitive Eating Principles Part 1 and Part 2, my favorite principle of Intuitive Eating Use the code NOURISH for 10% off your first Primally Pure order, my current recommendation is starting your day off with the gua sha stone and the new, Autumn Home Collection. It’s been a long time since we last had a podcast episode on intermittent fasting and I thought it was due time to an update, review of the research and to have an honest conversation with you about your need for rules. It’s common and totally okay to have questions about what is intuitive eating aligned and what is not when it comes to health trends, and even nutrition research. Because intuitive eating isn’t anti-health or even anti-nutrition, and...ALSO...Ultimately, this is your body, and your choice, so if you decide intermittent fasting is for you then it’s your choice to make, but I’m hoping I can give you another perspective on this super popular trend. Let’s first describe what is intermittent fasting. Intermittent Fasting (IF) is a diet regimen that cycles between brief periods of fasting, with either no food or significant calorie reduction, and periods of unrestricted eating.” In the episode we discuss: What is intermittent fasting and the different types of IF The reported benefits of intermittent fasting Considerations when reviewing the research on IF Potential cons to practicing IF (side effects) The weight centric and diet focus of the proponents of IF Why IF is inappropriate if you struggle with your relationship with food Why we don’t recommend IF for our clients at Nourishing Minds Nutrition More insight into intermittent fasting: Kelsey’s blog post Previous podcast episode on intermittent fasting Use the code NOURISH for 10% off your first Primally Pure order, my current recommendation is starting your day off with the gua sha stone. Trigger warning- this episode will share specific calorie numbers, if this is triggering for you please follow your gut and not listen to this episode. This podcast episode was inspired by the response I saw to the “1200 calories a day is the amount a 2 year old needs daily” post I shared recently on Instagram, and even Jillian Micheals recent “take on intuitive eating”. Plus, it’s the day after labor day and I have a feeling someone listening is thinking it’s time to get back on the “wagon” and start your new diet today, and I’m hoping I can talk you out of it. I’m so tired of the calories game. From eliminating carbs, to intermittent fasting to straight up calorie counting and Noom...let’s be real these are all just ways to decrease our caloric intake. I think it’s so interesting that the amount a 2 year old needs daily we think and believe is enough to sustain a grown ass adult. So many of the comments were making statements like “we aren’t growing anymore” and “I’m sedentary” and “if I eat more than this I’ll gain weight”. There is truth that you may gain weight eating more, but it’s not because you need only that amount to survive, it’s because you’ve taught your body to live in survival mode, slowing down your metabolism in order to navigate the semi-starvation state it is in. Listen to today’s episode to learn why the recommendations for caloric deficit ranges of 1,200-1,600 calories a day is bullshit, why you deserve better nutrition advice and how much calories is enough for you to come daily. Holy SHIT this episode is SO good. If you are a woman learning how to do uncomfortable things, this episode is for you. I was almost nervous to listen to this episode for edits because I remember what we talked about felt so raw. So often, I’m sharing content that I’m an expert in, but this episode, this is more of the thick of where I’m at in life, walking with you on this journey to do uncomfortable things, to be a thoughtful leader in our community, business owner and mom. Heather has been featured as a TEDx speaker and on The OWN Network, CTV, and The Jenny McCarthy Show. She has also appeared in Entrepreneur and Real Simple. When Heather isn’t being a classic Canadian by driving her boys to hockey practice, you’ll find her curled up on the couch with her husband surfing the internet, researching their next family adventure. In this episode we discussed: Heather’s work as a leadership coach and strategic parenting expert Heather shares her thoughts on this quote: “I believe all children deserve a caregiver whose cup is full, whose smile comes from deep in her heart, and whose voice is a source of love, guidance and inspiration. It is they, the kids, whose big smiles and fragile, demanding spirits are my purpose and my mission. To help you become the person you desire your children to be.” Heather’s experience stopping the hustle, the overachieving and learn how to rest and come home to her body/ The root cause issue to chronic overwhelm How we can each personally emulate becoming happy, calm and confident, to help our children become each of these. This episode is inspired by a graphic we shared from the woman’s dietitian, so I wanted to shout out Cory for inspiring this episode. I also wanted to record this episode because it seems to be a taboo subject, where we all NEED to know what to do, but it’s so rarely touched upon! Back in the day, women were told their vaginas were dirty and needed to be cleaned and smell good to keep their husbands happy, talk about a sexist message. I’ll also say that it’s almost funny to me that I’m recording this episode, because until a few years back I knew nothing about vaginal care. Since we help clients get their periods back from disordered eating and orthorexia, I started getting more and more questions about vaginal care and here we ARE. My main thing I want you to walk away from this episode knowing is that your vagina is a self cleaning organ, so the inside (your actual vagina) does not need to be cleaned. Listen to today's episode to learn more about vaginal care! In this episode we discuss: How to clean your vulva How to clean your vagina Avoiding fragrance and scent with your vagina and vulva Protecting your vaginal microbiome Products to use in your vulva and vagina What is normal with your discharge Use the code NOURISH for 10% off your first Primally Pure order, my current recommendation is starting your day off with the gua sha stone. Welcome to round 2 of a day in the life of….me! You loved the first episode I did on “A Day in the Life of an Intuitive Eater & Wellness Lover” (click here to listen) I thought it would be fun to do another episode of a day in the life. Today we are going to chat why clean eating is a diet in disguise. If you attended the why diets don’t work workshop this will be a review, but i wanted to turn parts of the workshop into a podcast episode because this information was too good not to share here! I wanted to started by saying that I find most people don’t think they are dieting, but indeed they are...which is the purpose of the episode. I think the best place to start this is by defining dieting. Because it’s hard to truly understand what is dieting. Why is that? Well, the diet industry has changed over the years. Sure, there’s the diets we all know are diets: South Beach Diet, Atkins Diet, counting calories. But what’s so confusing is that much of the dieting messages are all about “lifestyles” and “way of eating you can stick to for life.” Diets haven’t disappeared though...they’ve rebranded to sound less like a diet and more like a lifestyle...this is clean eating messages of the health and wellness world. The sneaky version of diets these days. The kind of lifestyles that are about elevating yourself above others, a better than mentality for how clean you eat...and ultimately? A message that boils down to lose weight or look like me to have perfect health. In this episode you’ll learn: What exactly is dieting and 3 my identifiers of diet culture The science behind why diets don’t work Survival adaptations of the body when we diet and eat clean Inflammation response and weight cycling response when we diet harder and eat cleaner and cleaner Calling a truce with intuitive eating What exactly is intuitive eating (and what it is not) Use the code NOURISH for 10% off your Primally Pure order for the entire month of August. I’ve been shifting more of my body image content lately to help you focus first on body respect. Because before anything else, you need to respect yourself and your body, first. When you immerse yourself in the intuitive eating/non-diet world it can be common to feel as if you need to immediately love your body and feel positive about it at all times. And then you feel shame if that’s not your reality. But we live in a world where thinness is idolized, so it makes sense that it's not as easy as it seems. It’s also way less about saying “I love my body” and more about how you treat it. I hope you walk away from this episode knowing that body love doesn’t even have to be the end goal. But if it is for you, it may be challenging due to cultural conditioning and fat phobia. Be compassionate and patient with yourself as you learn this new skill! Positive body image is less about what your body looks like, and more about developing self esteem and self worth that is not dependent on what your body looks like, and more about body respect, meaning you treat your body with respect no matter what it looks like. Because you don’t have to love your body to respect it! And you don’t have to constantly micromanage your body to take care of it. You can learn to trust your body, and come home to your body. You can take care of yourself, because you deserve to, no matter the size or shape of your body or health status. Listen to today’s episode to learn more and walk away with my 5 tips to practice body respect starting today and everyday going forward. Don’t forget to sign up for the free workshop I’ll be hosting next week, called Why Diet’s Don’t Work (and what to do instead). I’ll help you understand the physical and mental health benefits of intuitive eating and why it builds sustainable, long term health habits that stick. Let’s begin this episode with a reflection on your thoughts and beliefs surrounding carbohydrates (carbs). Have you ever sat down with your journal, and thought about which foods you specifically fear and why? Are there specific foods you limit, restrict or fear consuming? What about food groups? Write down anything you may fear, even if you believe it’s coming from a “good place” like in the name of health you are fearful of (fill in the blank) food. Did you notice any common themes around what specific foods you’ve written down? After years of doing this work in a one on one setting and now in online courses, I’ve noticed a theme, almost always, the #1 food fear is carbs. And really in all forms, complex carbohydrates like pasta and bread and potatoes and simple carbohydrates like sugar in the form of fruits and desserts. We believe so deeply that some foods are bad and some foods are good. And right now, in today’s world, the “worst” food for us is CARBS. Starting in the 1970’s through the 1990’s and early 2000’s, fat was the primary culprit of shame around food. Now that has shifted to a focus on villainizing carbohydrates. By using flawed research and fear mongering techniques, diet culture has made believe that if we avoid carbs at all cost, our fears won’t turn into reality. We could talk all day about the specific messages that are touted to make us believe carbs are the enemy...but I find if you keep asking yourself why, the fear and belief we have around eating carbs is almost always coming from a desire to lose weight, or to avoid weight gain. So weight is the ultimate root cause of our fear surrounding carbs. In this episode we discuss: Why fear of weight gain is not a reason to not eat a particular food Common thread between the diets and “clean eating” programs of today Gray area view of the argument around carbs and sugar Why shaming carbs isn’t good for our health and doesn’t help us eat the amount right for our bodies Why shaming foods, like carbs, causes the last supper mentality and the restrict-binge seesaw The importance of making foods emotionally equivalent to allow for mind body knowledge and the habituation response Coping with the permission stage of intuitive eating Why carbohydrates are amazing and the role they play in the body Questions to reflect and journal on to analyze your relationship around carbs Stay tuned for an extra special bonus episode tomorrow! I am thrilled to have Candace Molatore on the podcast today. I have followed Candace on Instagram for quite awhile now, and I have to say I’m obsessed! She is beautiful, with impeccable style, but more importantly- her words and writing speak to me so much. She’s like that calm, nurturing and honest friend that you cling on to every word she says to learn and do better as a person yourself. Today’s podcast sponsor is super special. Many insurance policies contain a “Transsexual Exclusion Clause” which excludes all medical procedures related to a person’s transgender status. In this episode we discuss: Candace shares her story and life’s journey leading her to the work she does today as a self love advocate, branding consultant and photographer What impacted Candace in the past with lack of self love and her tips for how she changed the narrative internally of her own self worth The origins of the body positive movement and how to respect its origins How can we be more respectful to the challenges Black women face of feeling body positive and embracing wellness Candace’s tips on using social media as a way to uplift ourselves, rather than compare and judge ourselves How we can as a collective whole be more inclusive to all body sizes How we vote with our money, and choosing brands that are inclusive to all body sizes How Candace built a wardrobe and style that fits her body and represents her personality How Candace practices wellness without obsession Learn more: Candace’s Instagram account Candace’s website Candace on staying confident in swimwear Candace on tips for confidence Brand mentioned in the episode, Girlfriend Collective Click here to get your hands on my new free mini course, the Summer Reset! Spoiler alert: This episode is NOT going to be what you think it is. Because the truth is, if you see ANYONE telling you that you can intentionally lose weight and practice intuitive eating, run far, far away. Today’s episode is to briefly share what can happen to your weight as you enter into intuitive eating, but the main purpose of this episode is to walk you through the many emotions involved with the desire to change our bodies and lose weight. Let’s start by sharing WHY any information that tells you you can intentionally lose weight is NOT intuitive eating and health at every size aligned. The very first principle of intuitive eating is to reject the diet mentality. As you read this chapter in the intuitive eating book or workbook, or work through online courses or one on one support to learn this principle, you’ll learn this about the diet mentality: “If you allow even one small hope to linger that a new and better diet might be lurking around the corner, it will prevent you from being free to rediscover Intuitive Eating.” If someone is telling you to intentionally to lose weight and still eat intuitively, or this is your own personal intention, you won’t be able to tap fully into intuitive eating. In this episode we discuss: Why intentional dieting and weight loss efforts prevent you from tapping into your intuitive eating capability What will happen to your weight as you stop dieting Set point theory and weight cycling science My own experience with set point and weight cycling Why the possibility of weight gain ignites such deep fear in us How to move past the fear and anxiety of potential weight gain Grappling with letting go of the desire to lose weight The real reasons why we desire weight loss and body changes The freedom and possibilities of what you will experience as an intuitive eater Learn more: Blog post on VM: Can you lose weight with intuitive eating Blog post on VM: Letting go of the desire to lose weight Intuitive eating book and workbook Primally Pure products mentioned in this episode: gua sha stone, charcoal deodorant, lemongrass and blue tansy deodorant.
