Since 2019, I've been actively stepping away from my Executive Director roles, selling my larger companies and moving into much more of a Non Executive position, whether on Boards in my own companies or other people's and in 2023, I made the big decision to step out of my final Executive role and up to the Chairman. Levelling up to the Chairman was the first big step change that I've done in about 10 years and the experience has been quite significant. In this podcast, I'm going to take you through the 15 lessons that I've learned in the first six months going from being an active Executive Director into a Non Executive Chairman. For those of you that are interested in what the next level looks like or what the difference is between the Chairman and an Executive Director, then this podcast is for you. Success and failure are both very predictable. I hope you enjoy.

Welcome to "Beyond the Boardroom," the podcast where we delve into the world of non-executive recruitment and explore how organizations find the right talent to guide their strategic direction. I'm your host, Adrian Lawrence, and in today's episode, we're going to unravel the intricacies of non-executive recruitment, shedding light on its significance, challenges, and best practices. To kick things off, let's clarify what exactly a non-executive director is and why their role is crucial in the corporate landscape. Unlike executive directors, who are involved in the day-to-day operations of a company, non-executive directors bring an outsider's perspective to the boardroom. They offer independent oversight, strategic guidance, and often serve as a link between the board and management. Their diverse expertise and experience can significantly enhance decision-making processes and ensure accountability. Now, finding the right non-executive director is no small feat. It requires a meticulous recruitment process tailored to the organization's needs and aspirations. But what are the key steps involved? Let's break it down. Firstly, defining the role and skillset required is paramount. Whether it's financial acumen, industry-specific knowledge, or leadership experience, clarity on these attributes is crucial for identifying suitable candidates. Next comes the search phase, which can involve various methods such as networking, headhunting, or leveraging recruitment agencies. This phase aims to cast a wide net to attract candidates who align with the defined criteria. Once potential candidates are identified, the selection process kicks into gear. This typically involves interviews, assessments, and reference checks to evaluate candidates' suitability and ensure they possess the necessary competencies and values. Finally, the onboarding process is essential for integrating the new non-executive director into the board and familiarizing them with the organization's culture, operations, and strategic priorities. Despite the structured nature of non-executive recruitment, challenges often arise along the way. From attracting diverse candidates to navigating conflicts of interest, there are several hurdles organizations must overcome. One common challenge is achieving diversity and inclusion within the boardroom. Studies have shown that diverse boards lead to better decision-making and performance. Therefore, organizations must actively seek out candidates from varied backgrounds to foster innovation and represent diverse stakeholders. Another challenge is managing conflicts of interest, particularly for non-executive directors who may have affiliations with other organizations. Transparency and robust governance mechanisms are essential to mitigate potential conflicts and uphold the integrity of the board. Now, let's turn our attention to best practices in non-executive recruitment. What can organizations do to optimize their processes and ensure they find the best talent for their boards? Firstly, fostering transparency and open communication throughout the recruitment process is key. Candidates should have a clear understanding of the role, expectations, and organizational dynamics to make informed decisions. Secondly, prioritizing diversity and inclusion ensures that boards benefit from a range of perspectives and experiences. This can be achieved by implementing diversity targets, providing unconscious bias training, and actively seeking out candidates from underrepresented groups. Lastly, ongoing evaluation and development of non-executive directors are essential for board effectiveness. . Thank you for tuning in to "Beyond the Boardroom." I'm Adrian Lawrence, and until next time, remember: the right non-executive director could be the catalyst for your organization's success. Dr. Mark Eastwood joins us to share his experience going through conversion therapy himself to discuss how survivors can cope with its effects and how others can support those who have come out the other side of this awful practice. Dr Mark Eastwood is an Executive and Non-Executive boardroom professional with extensive global governance experience, working for companies such as American Express and Rackspace Technology. Caroline Burton has a portfolio career which includes roles as an independent advisor to local authority pension plans and a NED role. She previously spent over 25 years at the Guardian Royal Exchange, where she was promoted to manager at the age of 28. She retired from that organization in 1999 and has since built a portfolio career. Our conversation starts in what seems like an entirely different era in the City - during the mid 1970s. Top hats were in vogue, gentlemen's dining clubs were the rage and diversity was not high on the agenda. Caroline encountered her fair share of sexism in her early career, but nonetheless made her way through management ranks, and shares some of her strategies for success. We reflect also on how the industry has changed, and where progress has been lagging. When she retired over 20 years ago she moved to a full portfolio career of committee and non executive director roles, and we discuss where these differ from executive roles. As an experienced committee member she has a a clear sense of where non executive roles differ from executive roles - in particular that the mantra should be "eyes on, hands off" and that observing and listening to the direction of travel and then opining on it can be a key value added of the non executive director. In this episode of SHIFT- Getting out of your comfort zone! I sit down with Fiona McKinnon - CEO of Moment Company to talk about how can we create a moment of wellbeing for ourselves - in this world where we are more connected, educated, and stimulated than ever before, and also EXHAUSTED. She shares her own personal journey to wellbeing and how she is helping others avoid burnout & stress. About Fiona McKinnon: CEO of Moment Company, entrepreneur, wellbeing advocate. After 20 years of living, working and traveling around the world as an executive in the AdTech and Media industry for brands such as The Guardian, CNN and Adconion in Europe, Australia, USA and Canada - I was burnt out! Physically, I had to stop. It was at this time, in 2014, that I started to be curious about the connection between my mind, stress and my body's reaction. I began exploring work by Abraham Hicks & Shawn Achor, practising yoga, mindfulness gratitude journaling and Transcendental Meditation. The effects were profound and life changing. It is this appreciation of the benefits of these practises had for me that led me to join Alex and Charlie at the Moment Company and to deliver on our shared vision to make mindfulness and meditation accessible to everyone. I maintain Non Executive positions within the advertising & business world at Keynes Digital and Scottish Business Network. I continue to be an active speaker within the digital media community supporting conversations around diversity as well as the promotion of wellbeing in the workplace. About Moment Company: develop mental wellbeing products that help reduce stress by making the benefits of mindfulness, meditation and breathwork simple, quick - and effective. The Moment Pebble is a beautifully designed natural stone breathing device that reminds us all to take mindful short breaks throughout the day. As opposed to fully digital services such as Headspace and Calm, Moments are anchored in the physical world, away from connected devices that are often the source of our stress. Re-learning the lost art of taking real world moments will change your life. We all cherish that feeling when we accomplish something. But how do we feel, and more importantly how do we react when things go wrong. Today's guest is someone who has experienced both; the highs and the lows and she has some sage advice for how we should deal with both success and failure in equal measure.Dale Stafford started her own business in 1980 and under her leadership it became one of the UK's leading and best performing training providers. In 2006 Dale successfully sold that business to a private equity company. Over more than 40 years in business, Dale's earned many accolades, amongst them being named by Business Insider in their inaugural list of the North West's Top 100 Women of Influence (2015) and recognition from the Prime Minister for her personal contribution to further education and skills (2006). She has also held a number of Chair and Non-Executive posts in both private and public sector organisations Dale now works purely on recommendation with business clients - owners, directors, leadership and management teams and their people - particularly in SMEs (typical range of turnover £250,000 to £40,000,000) * who have an aspiration to grow * solve particular problem/s that are getting in the way of that aspiration * or where owners are looking to successfully exit the business Dale doesn't blow her own trumpet and says she prefers her clients to do that for her with their own comments and experience of the impact she's had on them personally and their business. In 2012 Dale wrote a book “The Book of Job - the business of people for people in business” which takes a refreshing, wry and thought-provoking look at the founding principles for success. (Available on Amazon) “The Book of Job by Dale Stafford is a business classic & must have for all managers, strategists, marketers & business people who are interested in a people-based approach to success!”KEVIN STEIN, Co-Founder, Source TV, Hollywood “Just read ‘The Book of Job' by Dale Stafford & it's amazing!” RACHEL ELNAUGH, Dragons' Den Dale's also much in demand for speaking engagements and facilitating conferences.
