What is Trichotillomania? | Heather Brooke - 032

Trichotillomania (also known as trich or TTM) is a condition that causes someone to compulsively pull out their hair. In honor of Trichotillomania Awareness Month, we spent some time with Heather Brooke talking in depth about this disorder, discussing her experience as a licensed professional counselor working with clients with TTM and her lived experience with the condition starting in childhood. This is a compassionate conversation for people struggling with trichotillomania, their support systems, and anyone with an interest in learning more about this often misunderstood condition. What is Trichotillomania? Trichotillomania is a hairpulling disorder that causes people to uncontrollably (and at times unconsciously) pull out their hair. There is a lot of variability in how it can manifest in different people - the level of severity, location of the hair-pulling, and the age at which it starts can differ from case to case. Its causes are unknown, in Heather Brooke's case, she believes her TTM was caused by trauma. Heather was only nine years old when her trichotillomania began, and she relied on the adults in her life to notice and help her seek therapeutic help. Even though Heather has been in therapy and she is a therapist herself, she still struggles with her TTM. But that doesn't mean there is no hope! Resources for People with Trichotillomania A cure for trichotillomania has not yet been discovered, but there are many things we can do to reduce the impacts of it. In Heather's case, her TTM is exacerbated by anxiety and stress. Finding multiple outlets to release that stress is critical. For Heather, her main outlet is working out and going to the gym to let off steam, but in very stressful times, going to the gym isn't always possible. Having other coping strategies is extremely important when it comes to reducing the effects of TTM. One way to develop some of those coping strategies is to seek therapy and work with a licensed professional who can give individualized advice.  How to Support Someone with Trichotillomania If you want to help someone with trichotillomania, you have to start with compassion. As with any other condition related to mental illness, it isn't helpful to respond by telling the person suffering to “just stop.” People struggling with TTM do not want to pull their hair compulsively, so try to understand and empathize the best you can. Ask questions, put yourself in their shoes, and avoid judgmental language. For kids with TTM, Heather wrote a children's book called “Where Is My Hair? A Trichotillomania Story For Children” to help kids understand and relate to the disorder. And if you suspect the compulsive hair-pulling may be related to underlying trauma, it may be worthwhile to gently recommend counselling to your friend or loved one who is suffering with this disorder. From raccoon babies to underestimating window and plumbing repairs, this episode is full of great nuggets for first-time flippers!   In Heather's words: I started my real estate career back at the end of 2020 after taking the last few years off work to be a stay-at-home mom for my oldest two children. Just 3 months into my new career, we found out that I was pregnant with our third child. (SURPRISE) As we just settling into the idea of adding another member of our family, our world took another 180 when my husband hurt his back and was no longer able to work. Suddenly, I was the breadwinner on a commission-based job. Little did we know, that was just the thing we needed to turn our lives into something we never expected. Over the next few months, my husband gained his real estate license and became my business partner. (He wrote his first offer while we were in the hospital having our baby) Just a few short months after that, we were invited to the first ReUp event. After that first event, we immediately purchased our first investment property which is the one I will be talking about today. In the last 18 months, we have completed transformed our lives into a family of 5, Top Producing Realtors, Owners of a Cleaning company (LexiCo Cleaning), and Real Estate Investors. H.R. Hutzel and I had this conversation months ago, but felt the Lord’s leading for it to air now.  Supernatural fantasy author Heather Hutzel, is a woman who loves the Lord, His word, and invites others into the greatest story ever told through her unique and powerful storytelling. Heather and I talk about how we process the world around us, the spiritual warfare happening, all the time and our role in our stories.  In Heather’s novels, she asks the question: would it look like to package the Gospel inside of a story that sweeps the reader into an epic tale of identity, purpose, gifting and our role in the battle between good and evil? How do we as people of the here and now, but also of the Kingdom to come, define “good” and how does the Lord define “good?” When that comes to light, it asks more questions like: Who is our real enemy? What does it look like to fight a supernatural entity instead of one another? And honestly, that’s what we’re living right now. We kind of joke around here about what sort of plot twist might happen next, but the gift of the Gospel is that it is 100% true and no plot twist changes its life saving power. We serve an incredible and unconquerable King, and each of us have a role to play here. Can He win this war without us? He already has. But He invites us into His family, and gives us a unique opportunity to be part of His amazing work in this world, and hope for the future.  This conversation brings up unique and timely questions like: How do we view the activity of God? Do we process life from an eternal perspective? Are we fighting with flesh and blood instead of the real enemy? Where is God calling me in this place where I am right now to pursue HIM, and what is my role in the Kingdom of God on earth as it is in Heaven? So much to think about.  Wherever you are today friend, no matter how chaotic it all feels, don’t lose hope. This is not how it all ends, and He will NEVER leave us in it. You matter. On this episode I talk with Heather. Heather lives in Arkansas and she is a suicide attempt survivor. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In Heather's words... I am a 3x suicide attempt survivor and was a self mutilator for 14 years. Although there is no medical explanation of how or why I am alive today, I make a deliberate choice, every day, to trust and believe I am still breathing for a reason. Maybe the reason is to share what I have learned during this relentless war I call life with you. I pray my "story" will give someone the strength they need to choose another day. I hope it will give you insight to tools to help you make the choice to stay. At 9 years old, I decided that, "No one can hurt me, more than I can hurt myself". It took me 14 years to realize that although it sounded like an excellent motto to live by, it was a lie. Even though I thought I was in control, I continued to give the abusers and abuse power and permission to continue to hurt me, each time I hurt myself. I want you to take your power back NOW! I don't want it to take you 14 years like it did for me! I would love to help you find purpose, despite your pain. I would love to help give you more tools to help you fight and make the deliberate choice each day, to stay. We can't keep doing in our current relationships what we did in our past relationships.  “2+2” is always going to equal “4.”  In order to get “5” we have to change one of the parts. If we don't we will continue to get “4” as the answer. Let's talk about a more positive thought or quote and that is “If people sat outside and looked at the stars each night, I'll bet they'd live a lot differently” by Bill Watterson (cartoonist who wrote “Calvin and Hobbes”).  This might mean different things to different people, but it could mean that we have to get outside our current situation sometimes and look at the relationship as a whole and spend more time thinking and cultivating that than putting so much time in the “Argument du jour (of the day).”     Today Brian and Heather will talk about some ways that they work and interact together, that helps them take their eyes off of the tornado that might be presently surrounding them and onto the calm waters of the type of relationship they truly desire.   Forgiveness is very important.  This is letting your partner off the hook and to stop punishing them for something they have done.  It doesn't mean you trust again or that you condone the behavior.  Sometimes you have to do this from afar if safety is an issue and abuse is present.  Spending Time Together.  In today's busy and crazy world, with long work hours, different schedules, kids, and their activities this one can be difficult.  Be proactive when it comes to this one.  If you both belong to the gym and can coordinate working out together as an example then do that.  Or after the kids go to bed make it a point to spend a bit of quality time together.  Letting Things Go.  This one can be a bit like forgiveness but it more has to do with the individual mental choice to move on from a situation.  This can really help to promote better good will, when you can remember a situation that did not go well but you can't remember the specifics of what you talked about.  Of course don't sweep things under the rug but also don't hold grudges.  Not Trying to Change The Other.  If you spend a lot of your time trying to change someone else you might be waiting a long time.  Sometimes it might never happen.  Spend most of your time reflecting on what you are doing and how might you work on changing.  Often this type of thinking will have a positive impact on changing your partner (sometimes not though).  Dealing With Past Baggage.  This one is difficult because we often do not realize that we are reacting to our current spouse because of something that was done in our past relationship or childhood.  The first step in doing anything about this is recognizing it is happening and then secondly working to disconnect from it.  If you can't do this on your own then seeking help from a professional that can certainly speed that process up.  Spiritual Beliefs.  In Heather and Brian's case, they have a strong Christian faith.  While not perfect they both will work to grow closer to God and in doing so usually grow closer to each other.  Think about a triangle with each of you at the different points in the base and God at top as you grow closer to God you will automatically grow close to each other.    Prioritize Each Other's Love Language.  The 5 Love Languages according to the book by Gary Chapman are Words of Affirmation, Physical Touch, Acts of Service, Quality Time, and Gifts.  For Brian, his greatest love language is words of affirmation while Heather's is physical touch.  They both work hard to make sure they are loving the other in that love language.   Resources: None Mentioned Today Thanks For Listening! Make Your Home Purchase Smooth & Stress-Free

There are a lot of potentially stressful moments in a real estate transaction, and today I’m joined by Heather Blanchard, one of our team’s agents, to tell you how we make our buyers’ home purchases as stress-free as possible. This will give you an idea of what you should expect from your agent. In Heather’s opinion, one of the most stressful periods of a home purchase is going through the due diligence process. That’s when you have to get your appraisal done and conduct your inspections on the home. Sometimes, that inspection report can contain a long list of items to address. Fortunately, a lot of those items are typically nothing to worry about. When we work with our buyers, we go through each item on that inspection report and advise them on which issues they should fix and which they shouldn’t worry about. After we negotiate with the seller over what repairs to make, we have a Rolodex of contractors we can put you in touch with who will quote you on how much each repair will cost. “Sometimes, that inspection report can contain a long list of items to address.” Heather herself is a certified yoga instructor, so she knows a thing or two about stress relief. “I try to help you take the stress out of the process by just reminding people that it’s good to take a step back, take a couple of deep breaths, and that everything can be resolved,” she says. If you have any more questions about this or any other real estate topic, don’t hesitate to reach out to me. I’d love to help you.

Today’s guest, Heather Caplan, is a dietitian, running coach, a woman who has struggled and overcome. She shares deeply and openly about our relationship with food, eating, body image and more. At one point she says, “I felt like my life was running me instead of me running my life.” That's the point when she flicked the switch and changed her life. And that’s what we focus on today. How we can take control of our lives. In Heather’s world, this is focused on our often difficult, emotional relationship with food and eating as it relates to our relationship with our bodies. Today we talk about: Diet culture - Being an anti-diet dietitian Intuitive eating What the scale?! Eating disorders - a broad spectrum Heather's personal struggles with orthorexia (preoccupation with food) The Female Triad which consists of energy imbalances (possibly tied to eating disorders), menstrual changes & loss of bone density Habits and how to retrain our brains Lane 9 Project - Heather's nonprofit that supports women Heather is also a podcast host – check out her show RD Real Talk – she gets down and dirty in every episode. If you're interested in her area of expertise, I encourage you to check out her show. I love Heather's final nugget “You do you. Don’t be afraid to do what’s best for yourself.” Because in the end, it’s often fear that holds us back from many incredible experiences we could have in this lifetime. When you let go of that fear and you sink into who you are, accepting and embracing yourself, you will find the gold! For more Heather Caplan, go here! If you are interested in learning even more about Heather’s Work, I encourage you to sign up for her LIVE Teleclass on Wednesday January 9th, 2019 at 12pm, EASTERN, where she will be sharing some important insights she sees are needed for us in 2019 now more than ever and the changes she’ll personally be making to her business as a result. Click here to register. Here are some of the big topics we talked about… It can be such a gift to be a Highly Sensitive Entrepreneur (HSE) HSE’s can learn to approach overwhelm to be grounded, at peace, and successful Whether you run into or away from the fire, or a little of both, a clear understanding of HSE traits helps you move into creativity under pressure Trust and allowing your process to look differently are key Heather went through dark doubt on being in her industry before she self-assessed as highly sensitive and began to apply what she learned to her work. Now she still has a seven-figure business but her experience is much more positive. In Heather’s Voice “A Highly Sensitive Person’s nervous system is wired differently, interpreting information and sense stimulation at a much high degree.” “Being self-employed, the potential for overwhelm is staggering.” “Highly Sensitives are extremely creative by nature.” “When you tap into your creative strength, everything about being self-employed that perhaps felt so imprisoning can become an enlightening and fun experience.” “The willingness for a shift absolutely requires a deep aspect of trust. The irony is that most of us who are Highly Sensitive have learned the exact opposite.” “When I first heard the phrase and understood more from Dr. Elaine Aron’s work, it surprised me not that I was an HSP, only that I was off-the-charts highly sensitive.” “I had a group of 25 female entrepreneurs I was working with take Dr. Aron’s assessment and not surprisingly every person was highly sensitive. What surprised me is that not one of them wanted to be highly sensitive. They saw it as a detriment. That room full of talented coaches, healers, and creative entrepreneurs is what really began what is now the HSE movement.”   Connect with Heather A Course In Business Miracles Instagram Facebook HSE Quiz
