Join us in conversation with renowned songstress and author, Adele Bertei, as we weave our way through the life and times of Sinead O'Connor, courage in the name of justice, and the healing power of song. Adele is an anti-disciplinary author, director, performer, and composer currently residing in Los Angeles, CA. She is the author of Peter and the Wolves (Smog Veil, 2020), Why Labelle Matters (University of Texas Press, 2021), Twist: Tales of a Queer Girlhood (ZE Books, 2023), and Universal Mother (Bloomsbury 33 1/3, 2025). Bertei was an original member of the critically lauded Contortions, produced by Brian Eno on the seminal No New York LP. Reading prose and poetry, she opened for writers such as William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, and Kathy Acker among many others. Bertei acted in several underground films, including a lead role in Born In Flames by Lizzie Borden. Bertei was lead singer in the Bloods –America's first openly queer band of women, and has performed and recorded as a backing vocalist and touring vocalist for artists such as Tears for Fears, Thomas Dolby, Culture Club, Whitney Houston, Sandra Bernhard and Sophie B. Hawkins among many others. New York City's Museum of Modern Art recently acquired films of Bertei reading her poem The Ragazzi Manifesto in 1978, and The Offenders by Scott and Beth B., where Bertei plays the lead. She has created and facilitated songwriting workshops for homeless youth at My Friend's Place in Hollywood, and as a member of Wayne Kramer's Jail Guitar Doors, teaching songwriting to the incarcerated at the Twin Towers facility in downtown LA, and at Century Women's Regional Center at Lynwood, the largest women's jail in the nation. Her next book, No New York: A Memoir of No Wave and the Women Who Shaped the Scene, will be released in early 2026 by Faber & Faber UK. Mark Karan is best known for his extended time on the Grateful Dead scene as lead guitarist for Bob Weir & Ratdog, The Other Ones, Phil & Friends, and Planet Drum. But Mark's musical reach extends far beyond the land of the Dead. His six-string contributions have complemented recordings and tours with Delaney Bramlett, Dave Mason, Sophie B. Hawkins, the Rembrandts, and Paul Carrick. Mark has been a guest for sit-ins with the Allman Brothers, Trey Anastasio, Gov't Mule, Jackie Greene, Levon Helm, Little Feat, and many more. The San Francisco-based singer-songwriter-guitarist has recently been playing well-received live shows with the Grammy Award-winning Dave Alvin in a newly minted interpretive Americana band called “the Third Mind,” touring actively with “Live Dead & Brothers,” an interpretive “mash-up” of “Grateful Dead” & “Allman Brothers” material… touring with the David Gilmour/Pink Floyd inspired “Gilmour Project” & playing nearer to home with his own band, “Mark Karen's Buds.” Mark also recently finished recording and mixing his newest record and is embarking on what is possibly the most personal phase of his career. He joins Vivian to discuss it all.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

It's the terrifying conclusion of our Halloween FlopFight! Leaping into the tournament this week are characters from Nightmare Before Christmas, Hocus Pocus, Bewitched, Happy Days (what?), and more. Each matchup is drawn randomly, and the exact competitions are randomized too. (So for example, it could be Count Chocula against Jack Skellington, but in a pie-eating contest. Stuff like that.) So anything goes, and special guest Blasted Bill is back to keep things nice and silly. We're also wishing a Happy Birthday to 90s singer-songwriter Sophie B. Hawkins, who has something in common with one of our FlopFighters: a mysterious middle initial. Because a certain Tom Hanks SNL character is also competing. Any questions? Blasted Bill on TikTok! We are so stoked this week to have Mark Karan, a living legend, on No Simple Road this week! Mark Karan is best known for performing with the extended Grateful Dead family. He has anchored the lead guitar slot in Bob Weir & RatDog, playing hundreds of shows to thousands of fans year-round. Before crossing over into the land of the Dead, Mark worked his guitar and vocal voodoo for the likes of Dave Mason, Delaney Bramlett, the Rembrandts, Paul Carrack, Huey Lewis, Jesse Colin Young and Sophie B. Hawkins. Mark also tours with an array of amazing musicians in his own “Mark Karan's Buds”, where his soulful blues-based vocal stylings and inspired guitar work meld with the remarkably creative and responsive playing of his friends in a passionate delivery of the psychedelicized sounds of Americana. This is where rock meets R&B and country and mixes with the soul of New Orleans… with healthy portions of reggae, folk, funk and whatever else the muse might bring. In addition to his originals, as well as those of songwriter friends, Mark covers a range of eclectic songs from Johnny “Guitar” Watson's “You Can Stay (But the Noize Must Go)” and Peter Tosh's “Don't Look Back”, to the Kinks' “Lazin' on a Sunny Afternoon” or Joe Jackson's “Fools in Love” — his unique musical taste and song choices are the hallmark of these shows, and always crowd pleasers for his nationwide, loyal fanbase. Confidence, they say, is a preference for the habitual voyeur of what is known as……1994, darlings! And of course, as perceived wisdom now dutifully dictates, we were all completely mad for it, lemon hooch in hand, union jacks draped around our football tops, waving two fingers to those damn yanks. Go home!Except, of course, the truth couldn't be further away from the, er truth. Whilst it definitely maybe was 1994, there was so much more than just cigarettes (and alcohol). And we were all the better for it, pop kids! Our favourite compilation series was not only celebrating nearly turning 30, it was also sporting a new slimline 2CD cover - swanky, and soooo nineties! Goodbye fat boxes, this decade of NOW was neater, fitter and certainly in full swing. So, what could you expect from this sparkly, starshaped selection of 38 Top Chart Hits?Pure, glistening pop from the likes of Michelle Gayle and Sophie B Hawkins!Boyband phoar-dom (is this a word?) from the top flight teams of FC Take That and East 17 United!Swoonsome songstress Lia Loeb positively not missing the knocks of Ethan Hawke (reality will bite)! And huge slices of europop at every provincial nightclub turn! Another Saturday (rhythm of the) Night folks! Mine's a Pernod and blackcurrant and chip butty! And of course we had a selection of those most poppy sounds of the Brit persuasion, courtesy of blur (no capital!) and Oasis. Swagger, confidence and NOW on the money as always. All of this and much, much more awaits - including SPARKS! Yes, actual Russell and Ron Mael on a NOW album!Join Anna Doble - broadcaster, journalist and author of ‘Connection is a Song: Coming Up and Coming Out Through the Music of the 90s' - as we head down some fascinating rabbit holes and unearth not just a year of memories, but a whole decade of emotional and personal stories, interwoven by the power of music. And as always, NOW serves as the perfect snapshot of pop bringing it all back home.AND we pose some of 1994 biggest questions:When did Britpop actually begin?Which band followed Anna around Leeds on a bus? (well, not actually)Is 2wo Third3 the first ever case sensitive password? Are Shampoo the centre of the pop universe?Ultimate KAOS - why?Join us for NOW29 - it's SO GOOD and INCREDIBLE! Since the start of her musical journey, Sophie B. Hawkins has shown an uncompromising devotion to her singular truth, endlessly transcending boundaries and offering up new ways of experiencing the world around us.In the 90's she turned heads by declaring herself as "omni-sexual". While others scratched their heads at the term, she embraced concepts that are just now being understood and lived. Her new albulm underscores the theme of authenticity and taking the freedom to be YOU as you are, and want to be seen. Rooted in Sophie's raw yet poetic lyrics as well as her captivatingly distinctive vocals Free Myself features some of her most emotionally powerful material to date. Tapping into the same passion-filled storytelling and colorful eclecticism that inspired her 1992 platinum-selling debut Tounges and Tales this long-awaited album (Sophie's first in over a decade) sees the singer/songwriter reflecting on what has been a trailblazing, revolutionary career while embarking on a new creative chapter of independence and positivity. Sophie B. Hawkins, the Grammy-nominated American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and painter, joins host Kenneth Womack on the season five finale episode of “Everything Fab Four.” Hawkins started her Beatles journey as a kid with “Revolver,” and remembers playing along with tennis racket guitars and couch cushion drums. “Even as a non-musician, you can sing basically every part.” In this conversation, she digs deep into the unique ways Beatles fans come together through the music, and how being a Beatles fan pushed her toward excellence in her own songwriting. Born and raised in New York City, Hawkins pursued her studies as a percussionist at the Manhattan School of Music before embarking on a music career. She exploded into the international consciousness in 1992 with her debut album “Tongues and Tales.” A massive critical and commercial success, the LP spawned the hit single “Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover.” Her second album, “Whaler,” featured additional hit singles in “Right Beside You” and “As I Lay Me Down.” As an actress, she has portrayed Janis Joplin in the play “Room 105,” while also performing as herself on the NBC TV series “Community,” for which she sang renditions of “Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover” and “As I Lay Me Down.” Her latest album “Free Myself,” on the independent label she founded, Trumpet Swan Productions, features such standout tracks as “Love Yourself” and “Better Off Without You.” --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/everythingfabfour/support

The featured artist in this episode is Ben Arthur – a New York-based singer, songwriter, novelist, and podcaster – with Virginia roots. Ben is passionate about exploring how inspiration works and how creativity functions and relates to art. Ben strongly believes that art can alleviate people's suffering and how the connection of art to money by society is a cultural sickness. He spearheads multiple projects that probe the intersection and interplay between literature, music, and visual art. Ben's SongWriter podcast “turns stories into songs” by pairing literary and musical artists together. Featured artists include Questlove, Joyce Carol Oates, David Gilmour of Pink Floyd, Roxane Gay, Amanda Shires of The Highwomen, Cheryl Strayed, Susan Orlean, Steve Earle, George Saunders, and Katie Melua. In Ben's Emmy-nominated SongCraft Presents video series, each segment brings together two artists, unknown to each other, to write a song in a three-hour session. From developing the concept and lyrics to its actual composition and arrangement to performance, the artists are challenged to make not a good song, but a great song. Since 1997, Ben Arthur the musician, has released 10 albums since 1997 and has been featured in Rolling Stone, Forbes, and American Songwriter magazines as well as the New York Times. He has opened for Tori Amos, Shawn Colvin, Bruce Hornsby, Sophie B. Hawkins, Toots & the Maytals, Old 97s, and many years ago, he shared an open mic stage with an up-and-coming artist Charlottesville, Virginia's very own Dave Matthews. Join Team Derringer as they delve into Ben's catalog of music, discover the stories behind his songs, and learn about the interesting artists he has featured on his SongWriter podcast. 30 years ago, Sophie B. Hawkins released her debut album Tongues and Tails. The album launched Hawkins's career and went platinum thanks to tracks like the single, "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover." Hawkins joins us to discuss her career and forthcoming music, and takes listener calls. She'll be playing at City Winery on November 28.
Sophie B. Hawkins dominated the airwaves with her 1992 debut single, “Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover,” a song with homoerotic overtones that were rare in mainstream pop at the time. If they went unnoticed by many listeners, she fought nearly every step of the way to express her progressive views and maintain her independence at her label, and struggled to find her place in the LGBTQ community. Meanwhile, k.d. lang's 1992 hit “Constant Craving” and her album Ingenue ushered her out of Nashville and into the Top 40 spotlight. After she came out, picketers protested her Grammy nominations, but her star quickly rose, with Vanity Fair tapping her for one of its most memorable, provocative covers and cementing her status as a sex symbol and a queer icon. In this episode, we explore how the two artists navigated the music industry and their sexual orientations as they were thrust into the public eye. With special guest Sophie B. George Miller's new fantasy-romance THREE THOUSAND YEARS OF LONGING may not have made a splash in theaters, but your Next Picture Show cohort agrees it's the sort of odd-duck movie that tends to age well, in part because it fits nicely into the sturdy category of “stories about storytelling.” Even more so than its central djinn character, that interest in storytelling is what links this film to 1940's THE THIEF OF BAGDAD, and so after unpacking our reactions to Miller's film, we bring THIEF back into the discussion to compare two fantastical tales, one sincere and one self-aware, about how desire and love can shape the nature of beings both mythic and mortal. Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about THE THIEF OF BAGDAD, THREE THOUSAND YEARS OF LONGING, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net, leaving a short voicemail at 773-234-9730, or commenting on our Patreon (patreon.com/NextPictureShow), where you can also find bonus episodes and more. It's Autumn 1992! Damn, Would I Lie To You?What an interesting time for the UK singles charts. Is it fair to say the decade was at some sort of apex point? Well, the tracklist for November's NOW, That's What I Call Music 23 album was certainly not giving us a clear a view of what the next big thing was going to be. Or was it?Whilst the start of the 90s had exploded with a colourful wave (or should that be rave?) of indie & dance, and very soon Britpop would take a steely and sneering guitar grip across the nation, 1992 almost seemed to be in a fascinating holding pattern. Not exactly the annus horribilus that some were calling it, and as always the NOW team were on hand to serve up a suitably compiled snapshot of musical delights (and Billy Ray Cyrus) for us to feast upon.Tasmin Archer, Sophie B Hawkins and Betty Boo led the way for some great female fronted pop moments, Arrested Development were providing an RnB laidback groove for the 90s, the Freddie Mercury tribute concert was still impacting across the charts and The Shamen were being, naughty, naughty, very naughty. But there was also a fair degree of retro feel to this edition of NOW. Was it the 80s (Simple Minds), 70s (ABBA) or 60s (Vanessa Paradis!)? TV advert songs - which brand of jeans were you buying? And don't even mention waistcoats! Just too funky for me...But even when things don't seem to be happening, there's always something happening. And there's no doubt that the 90s had plenty of excitement waiting around the corner!Joining me for this episode is author, visual artist and sometime musician Zoë Howe.Zoe has produced acclaimed biographies including The Slits, the Jesus & Mary Chain, Wilko Johnson, Stevie Nicks, Florence + The Machine, Lee Brilleaux and Poly Styrene and in 2021 was part of the team behind the award-winning documentary Poly Styrene: I Am A Cliché. She has made radio programmes for Absolute Radio, Resonance FM and currently presents the Rock 'n' Roll Witch show on Soho Radio. Zoë's forthcoming book Witchful Thinking (a handbook for the modern Wise Woman) is to be published by Llewellyn in May 2022. And later this year will also see her revision of the book The Art of Punk released, and the launch of The Jam 1982, a collaboration with The Jam's Rick Buckler. I apologize for going so deep into the Cameo story in this episode; the music of Cameo had such a profound impact on my life and my drumming. It's all part of the story of why I play the shows I play and how I play them. In this episode, we discuss:Growing up in Akron, Ohio, and playing in several bands during his formative years. What it was like auditioning for Chubby Checker and getting an 18-month tour. The importance of playing live and playing with older and better players.Going to a cattle call for a Billy Idol tour and his many second-place finishes. How a $2.75 beer at the Prince Street Bar catapulted him to another level where he became the go-to guy for drum programming in New York City.
