Then there's Trump's inauguration, Nigel Farage vs Tommy Robinson, the fact that Indiana Jones doesn't appear to wash his clothes, an abysmal sketch about a sandwich shop, a ‘behind the scenes' skit with Rolf Harris and a young TV show runner, a look forward to anymore possible natural disasters that might happen this year (due to climate change), wearing Dr Martens boots with jogging bottoms? People who say they're going to carry on working after winning the lottery, Barry challenges Greg to guess what was on TV on the 23/01/95 (exactly 30 years ago), favourite biscuits, Jay Blades's absence from The Repair Shop, Bradley Walsh's observational humour on The Chase, problematic lyrics in old songs, the lyrics to the song '24 hrs from Tulsa', Marina Hyde's TV show ‘The Franchise' getting axed, our weekly improvised soap opera ‘Aylesbury Market', recommendations, Future Greg and a whole lot more!

Jay Blades, MBE is a furniture restoration expert and TV presenter from Hackney, East London. Jay struggled with dyslexia growing up and found solace using his hands. He got by in school, but never learned to read and has since shared his journey to help break the stigma for others in his position. Jay is the much-loved presenter of The Repair Shop on BBC One, which won a BAFTA for Best Daytime Programme in 2023. He released a memoir in 2022, Making It: How Love, Kindness and Community Helped Me Repair My Life. His new show, David and Jay's Touring Tool Shed, is available on BBC iPlayer now. Jay is a big fish fan and arrives hungry (which he mentions once or twice!). Luckily for him, Angela has prepared a whole sea bream, with brown butter champ and charred salad onions. Nick and Jay are blown away by the rich umami flavours. This dish is complemented by a bottle of Patricius Tokaj Dry Furmint recommended by the experts at Waitrose. Counting King Charles and Dame Judi Dench as two of his biggest fans, Jay Blades is the most charming of dinner guests. Jay Blades is the BAFTA-winning presenter of the hit primetime TV show The Repair Shop - watched by 4.5 million people a week. But a TV career was never on the cards for him. He was raised in east London by a single mother, after his father ran off with all of their money. His education was stunted by undiagnosed dyslexia - he learned in adulthood he had the reading age of an 11-year-old.But this didn't stop Jay. He dedicated his life helping his local community, and founded a charity teaching young people to restore old furniture. But when funding ran out and his marriage fell apart, he hit rock bottom: he was suicidal and homeless. He turned his life around and lifted himself from that darkness. Circular with Katie Treggiden

In this episode, Katie speaks with Jay Blades, a modern furniture restorer, upcycler and eco designer who is passionate about sustainability and community. We discuss his history with furniture restoration, the importance of investing in the next generation of creators, why helping people you may never meet truly matters and lots more. Jay Blades is now best known for presenting the BBC's Money for Nothing, The Repair Shop and most recently Jay and Dom's Home Fix.  I've known Jay for a long time, so it was lovely to catch up with him for a proper conversation about a subject that is so close to both of our hearts. We discuss:Jay's earliest memory of repairing things. Jay's former non-profit Out of the Dark and teaching young people to repair and restore old furniture. The reason future proofing is so important. The end of his marriage, his experience with homelessness and how he came back from it all. Jay's experience of The Repair Shop and meeting Mary Berry … and more! Here are some highlights:How ‘Out of the Dark' Came To Be. “My ex-wife Jade and I were running the charity called ‘Street Dreams' which was basically about getting young people away from crime, so it was a fresh approach to old problems. The council, police, social services, fire services would come to us and say, ‘we've got a hot spot area where young people are committing crime and we need you to go in there and sort it out.' Funding started drying up and we needed to continue working with those young people. One of the things that we operated when we started running all these charities, it was a case of working yourself out of a job which basically means that you work with a group of young people who are disengaged, then they become engaged and where do they go with all that energy? Then we employ them, and then they start to become the new youth leaders. So,as we wanted to continue with these young people, Jade came up with the wonderful idea of restoring old furniture.”“About 50% of them have gone into restoration or furthering their education. They've gone on to upholstery, restoration, project management, interior design and things like that. A lot of them have just gone on to normal jobs. I think with the group of young people who used to have them just getting out of bed was a bonus, them not smoking or doing some low-level crime is a winner.” Why investing in Young People through Restoration Matters.  “One of the things that I love about restoration is it brings so many elements for people who have been put on, let's say the scrap-heap. If you go into the educational system, if you don't get the A star plus or you don't get the grades, you're really gonna amount to nothing, is kind of what they're saying to you. If you get the A-star, you're going to college or university, have 2.5 kids and live happily ever after, you've got a brilliant job. Whereas the way that I look at things, I look at sustainability as a whole. Some people look at it as: you've got to separate your plastics from your paper and your glass and this and that. Sustainability includes people and these young people need to have something put into them that allows them to see themselves as sustainable and as a valued member of society, so that's what it was all about.”  Why Future Proofing is so Important.“I think people and the planet are very important to me, especially when it comes to community work. I worked in the community sector and really there is no profit in the work, you're doing it for the love, and you're kind of doing it for people you're never gonna see. So I have this kind of way of functioning now. I'm here on this planet to influence people I'm never gonna meet, and that means that I have to leave a legacy, create something that can be taken over by someone else or re-designed by someone else, and then they would say, ‘Well, I kind of got that idea from that person, but this is what I've done with the idea. And that to me is what future-proofing is all about. Let's make sure that the future is bright for people who are not here yet, because if we continue the way that we're continuing on this planet, we're not gonna leave them a pretty problem. It's gonna be quite messy.” Learn more & connect with JayhereCheck out Jay's book ‘Making It'here Books we mentioned:My new book, Broken: Mending and Repair in a throwaway world is now available on pre-order here on BookShop.Org or on AmazonThe foreword has been written by Jay Blades and this book celebrates 25 artists, curators, designers and makers who have rejected the allure of the fast, disposable and easy in favour of the patina of use, the stories of age and the longevity of care and repair. Jay grew up in Hackney in East London and was brought up by his mother Barbara. He struggled to read as a young boy which held him back at school and he left at 16. Years later, after he got a place to study criminology and philosophy at university, he was diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of 31. He worked as a community worker for many years and co-founded charities which helped disadvantaged young people learn new skills. One of his charities was based in High Wycombe – an area famous for its historic furniture trade – and Jay learned how to restore furniture alongside the teenagers he was helping. Later he started his own furniture restoration business and in 2017 he started presenting the Repair Shop. Here, he talks to Dr Sian Williams about the time in his life when he was at his most vulnerable, and how he managed to ‘move from that place'. Mind Matters with Dr Sian is a podcast from 5 News, hosted by Dr Sian Williams. It's produced by Katie Goodman and executive produced by Silvia Maresca. This week we're talking about how to work out what matters most in life and to prioritise that instead of wasting time flicking through pictures of cats playing the piano (unless that IS important to you).We wonder why Henry James felt the need to repeat himself, disagree about Britpop, and observe a distinct lack of furniture restoration from Jay Blades on the BBC show "The Repair Shop"

Life, Interrupted with Simon Thomas

Jay blades is the stylish star of the wonderful BBC hit show the repair shop the show where his team of talented craftsmen and women bring downtrodden family heirlooms back to life and then reunite them with their often emotional owners. Part of the show secret is Jay's charm, style, wit and warmth. A man who always shows compassion and empathy to the many who have visited the repair shop bar. But behind this calm figure is a story of an upbringing and life that was anything but serene. Growing up in northeast London, Jay's early childhood was a largely happy and innocent one, yet when he went to senior school, all that changed. He was regularly physically and verbally abused because of the color of his skin. He left school battered, emotionally scarred and with no qualifications. By the age of 21, Jay was homeless. It was only in his 30s that he began to turn his life around, heading to university and then making changes in his life that transformed him and the lives of hundreds of young people through his various community projects. Now he's written a wonderful book called "Making It" about his life, and as he admits the most impressive restoration he's carried out has been on himself. His is a challenging but wonderfully inspiring story. If you have been through life events similar to those described in this episode and you need someone to talk to, please contact The Samaritans, on 116 123 And if you'd like to share your thoughts with Simon, he'd love to hear from you: Twitter @SimonThomasSky

Circular with Katie Treggiden

Welcome to Season 2 of Circular with Katie Treggiden. We’re kicking things off with Jay Blades, a modern furniture restorer, upcycler and eco designer who is passionate about sustainability and community. In this episode we discuss his history with furniture restoration, the importance of investing in the next generation of creators, why helping people you may never meet truly matters and lots more. Jay Blades is now best known for presenting the BBC’s Money for Nothing, The Repair Shop and most recently Jay and Dom's Home Fix.  I’ve known Jay for a long time, so it was lovely to catch up with him for a proper conversation about a subject that is so close to both of our hearts. We discuss:- His earliest memory of repairing things. - His former non-profit Out of the Dark and teaching young people to repair and restore old furniture. - The reason future proofing is so important. - The end of his marriage, his experience with homelessness and how he came back from it all. - His experience of The Repair Shop and meeting Mary Berry  … and more! Here are some highlights.  How ‘Out of the Dark’ Came To Be. “My ex-wife Jade and I were running the charity called ‘Street Dreams’ which was basically about getting young people away from crime, so it was a fresh approach to old problems. The council, police, social services, fire services would come to us and say, ‘we've got a hot spot area where young people are committing crime and we need you to go in there and sort it out.’ Funding started drying up and we needed to continue working with those young people. They’ve gone on to upholstery, restoration, project management, interior design and things like that. A lot of them have just gone on to normal jobs. I think with the group of young people who used to have them just getting out of bed was a bonus, them not smoking or doing some low-level crime is a winner.”Why investing in Young People through Restoration Matters.  “One of the things that I love about restoration is it brings so many elements for people who have been put on, let’s say the scrap-heap. If you go into the educational system, if you don’t get the A star plus or you don't get the grades, you're really gonna amount to nothing, is kind of what they're saying to you. If you get the A-star, you’re going to college or university, have 2.5 kids and live happily ever after, you've got a brilliant job. Whereas the way that I look at things, I look at sustainability as a whole. Some people look at it as: you've got to separate your plastics from your paper and your glass and this and that. Sustainability includes people and these young people need to have something put into them that allows them to see themselves as sustainable and as a valued member of society, so that’s what it was all about.” Why Future Proofing is so Important.“I think people and the planet are very important to me, especially when it comes to community work. It's gonna be quite messy.”Learn more & connect with Jay hereCheck out Jay’s book ‘Making It’ hereAbout Katie TreggidenKatie Treggiden is a purpose-driven journalist, author, podcaster and keynote speaker championing a circular approach to design – because Planet Earth needs better stories. In the first of a new series of podcasts brought to you by the Design and Technology Association in association with The Edge Foundation, we talk with Jay Blades community worker, furniture restorer and TV presenter. Jay talks us through his journey from his education in North West London to working with his ex-wife to set up 'Out of the Dark' a social enterprise created to help disadvantaged young people learn practical skills through furniture renovation and design. Jay very candidly describes how he came through a very dark period in his life when within a matter of months his marriage ended, and he lost the business that he loved and found himself homeless and without direction in his life. Chance brought Jay to Wolverhampton, where he refound himself and created a new purpose in life renovating antique furniture. Chance again had a big hand in Jay's introduction to TV work, he describes his journey and what it's like to be the frontman for one of the most popular light entertainment shows on TV right now, The Repair Shop, a show attracting 8 million viewers! Through the conversation, one gets the impression of a man who likes to connect with people and is drawn to want to make a difference to those born to a disadvantaged start in life. Jay describes the importance of creativity in education and in life and provides his thoughts on how the simple art of making something can feed the soul! This was a delightful conversation and is one that we believe provides a perfect opener to this new podcast series.
