Circular with Katie Treggiden

In this episode, Katie speaks with Jay Blades, a modern furniture restorer, upcycler and eco designer who is passionate about sustainability and community. We discuss his history with furniture restoration, the importance of investing in the next generation of creators, why helping people you may never meet truly matters and lots more. Jay Blades is now best known for presenting the BBC's Money for Nothing, The Repair Shop and most recently Jay and Dom's Home Fix.  I've known Jay for a long time, so it was lovely to catch up with him for a proper conversation about a subject that is so close to both of our hearts. We discuss:Jay's earliest memory of repairing things. Jay's former non-profit Out of the Dark and teaching young people to repair and restore old furniture. The reason future proofing is so important. The end of his marriage, his experience with homelessness and how he came back from it all. Jay's experience of The Repair Shop and meeting Mary Berry … and more! Here are some highlights:How ‘Out of the Dark' Came To Be. “My ex-wife Jade and I were running the charity called ‘Street Dreams' which was basically about getting young people away from crime, so it was a fresh approach to old problems. The council, police, social services, fire services would come to us and say, ‘we've got a hot spot area where young people are committing crime and we need you to go in there and sort it out.' Funding started drying up and we needed to continue working with those young people. One of the things that we operated when we started running all these charities, it was a case of working yourself out of a job which basically means that you work with a group of young people who are disengaged, then they become engaged and where do they go with all that energy? Then we employ them, and then they start to become the new youth leaders. So,as we wanted to continue with these young people, Jade came up with the wonderful idea of restoring old furniture.”“About 50% of them have gone into restoration or furthering their education. They've gone on to upholstery, restoration, project management, interior design and things like that. A lot of them have just gone on to normal jobs. I think with the group of young people who used to have them just getting out of bed was a bonus, them not smoking or doing some low-level crime is a winner.” Why investing in Young People through Restoration Matters.  “One of the things that I love about restoration is it brings so many elements for people who have been put on, let's say the scrap-heap. If you go into the educational system, if you don't get the A star plus or you don't get the grades, you're really gonna amount to nothing, is kind of what they're saying to you. If you get the A-star, you're going to college or university, have 2.5 kids and live happily ever after, you've got a brilliant job. Whereas the way that I look at things, I look at sustainability as a whole. Some people look at it as: you've got to separate your plastics from your paper and your glass and this and that. Sustainability includes people and these young people need to have something put into them that allows them to see themselves as sustainable and as a valued member of society, so that's what it was all about.”  Why Future Proofing is so Important.“I think people and the planet are very important to me, especially when it comes to community work. I worked in the community sector and really there is no profit in the work, you're doing it for the love, and you're kind of doing it for people you're never gonna see. So I have this kind of way of functioning now. I'm here on this planet to influence people I'm never gonna meet, and that means that I have to leave a legacy, create something that can be taken over by someone else or re-designed by someone else, and then they would say, ‘Well, I kind of got that idea from that person, but this is what I've done with the idea. And that to me is what future-proofing is all about. Let's make sure that the future is bright for people who are not here yet, because if we continue the way that we're continuing on this planet, we're not gonna leave them a pretty problem. It's gonna be quite messy.” Learn more & connect with JayhereCheck out Jay's book ‘Making It'here Books we mentioned:My new book, Broken: Mending and Repair in a throwaway world is now available on pre-order here on BookShop.Org or on AmazonThe foreword has been written by Jay Blades and this book celebrates 25 artists, curators, designers and makers who have rejected the allure of the fast, disposable and easy in favour of the patina of use, the stories of age and the longevity of care and repair. Replacing gas cars with electric ones is a main pillar of plans to fight climate change. But the lithium-ion batteries used in electric cars come with a cost. Communities near the Salar de Atacama in Chile, where about a quarter of the world's lithium is extracted from salty aquifers, say mining companies pose a serious threat to the local environment and their access to water. Mining companies strongly dispute those claims. In this episode of Stereo Chemistry, we'll explore the environmental factors at play in the salar and the differing perspectives on how best to measure impact. And we'll hear from a new group of mining start-ups that claim they can use chemical methods—as yet unproven—to extract lithium without the same impact on water.  This is the first episode in a new series exploring the future of water. Co-founder of Street Dreams Magazine, Eric Veloso always had the hustle (and photographer's eye) in him. From learning how to frame shots while working in film to learning the ropes of distribution at Aritzia, Eric followed his natural instincts, growing Street Dreams with his business partners from a print publication to also a creative studio.Born in Calgary and raised in Vancouver, he was taught the virtue of hard work by watching his single mother go from a hotel maid to director of entertainment services. His passion for photography came in his teens, after a skateboard injury sidelined him. To pass time at the skatepark while recovering, he picked up a camera, shooting everything urban. While in New York in 2014, a fated run-in with a photographer that he followed on Instagram named Steve Irby led him, Steve and Mike Cobarubbia to found Street Dreams Magazine, which grew quickly in the following years to include a creative studio, a clothing line available in Tokyo, and a loyal global community. In this conversation, we dive deep into the origins of his hustle and growing up in a Latino household; the combination of hard work and right timing when it came to the birth of Street Dreams; the magazine's guest-edited issue with Jeff Staple and the issue launch party that shut down a New York city block; what it's been like creating campaigns & activations for the likes of Nike, New Balance, Tribeca Film Festival, Coach, HBO & more; a hilarious interaction with comedian George Lopez and actor Don Cheadle at a panel talk in Soho's Apple Store; how a 2015 New York Times article catapulted the Street Dreams brand; what's next on the horizon, and much more.

Circular with Katie Treggiden

Welcome to Season 2 of Circular with Katie Treggiden. We’re kicking things off with Jay Blades, a modern furniture restorer, upcycler and eco designer who is passionate about sustainability and community. In this episode we discuss his history with furniture restoration, the importance of investing in the next generation of creators, why helping people you may never meet truly matters and lots more. Jay Blades is now best known for presenting the BBC’s Money for Nothing, The Repair Shop and most recently Jay and Dom's Home Fix.  I’ve known Jay for a long time, so it was lovely to catch up with him for a proper conversation about a subject that is so close to both of our hearts. We discuss:- His earliest memory of repairing things. - His former non-profit Out of the Dark and teaching young people to repair and restore old furniture. - The reason future proofing is so important. - The end of his marriage, his experience with homelessness and how he came back from it all. - His experience of The Repair Shop and meeting Mary Berry  … and more! Here are some highlights.  How ‘Out of the Dark’ Came To Be. “My ex-wife Jade and I were running the charity called ‘Street Dreams’ which was basically about getting young people away from crime, so it was a fresh approach to old problems. The council, police, social services, fire services would come to us and say, ‘we've got a hot spot area where young people are committing crime and we need you to go in there and sort it out.’ Funding started drying up and we needed to continue working with those young people. They’ve gone on to upholstery, restoration, project management, interior design and things like that. A lot of them have just gone on to normal jobs. I think with the group of young people who used to have them just getting out of bed was a bonus, them not smoking or doing some low-level crime is a winner.”Why investing in Young People through Restoration Matters.  “One of the things that I love about restoration is it brings so many elements for people who have been put on, let’s say the scrap-heap. If you go into the educational system, if you don’t get the A star plus or you don't get the grades, you're really gonna amount to nothing, is kind of what they're saying to you. If you get the A-star, you’re going to college or university, have 2.5 kids and live happily ever after, you've got a brilliant job. Whereas the way that I look at things, I look at sustainability as a whole. Some people look at it as: you've got to separate your plastics from your paper and your glass and this and that. Sustainability includes people and these young people need to have something put into them that allows them to see themselves as sustainable and as a valued member of society, so that’s what it was all about.” Why Future Proofing is so Important.“I think people and the planet are very important to me, especially when it comes to community work. It's gonna be quite messy.”Learn more & connect with Jay hereCheck out Jay’s book ‘Making It’ hereAbout Katie TreggidenKatie Treggiden is a purpose-driven journalist, author, podcaster and keynote speaker championing a circular approach to design – because Planet Earth needs better stories. Weird and Fantastical Stories of Ken David Stewart

Episode 50 of Street Dreams Eileen Drexler's heart was filled with anxiety. She could feel her blood pressure rising as waves of pain kept assaulting her skull. She was trying to remember what happened and what her part was in this bloody mess. Had she killed her boyfriend Stan Kowalski when they were embroiled in a fierce physical struggle? If so, that she must've struck him with the hammer in self defence. She kept on applying CPR while these thoughts rushed through her head. Where was her daughter, Pixie? Aileen called out for Pixie, but did not receive a response. Was it possible Pixie had assaulted Stan? She and Stan certainly did not get along and there was no love lost between them. Stan Kowalski did his best to tolerate Aileen's teenage daughter, but found that he wasn't able to relate to her on any level. Whenever Stan would attempt to reprimand or discipline Pixie in any way, she would tersely remind him that he was not her father. Stan Kowalski presented with an impressive physique. He was 5'11" tall and weighed 220 pounds. Stan had been steadily and rapidly losing his hair. so he now just shaved his head. He sported a black moustache, a goatee and an earring in his left ear lobe. His biceps bulged out of the tight black T-shirts that he liked to wear. Stan was never an academic and dropped out of school, half way through grade ten. His lack of a secondary education caused Stan much consternation and embarrassment. Stan compensated for his lack of scholastic credentials by taking good care of his body. He worked hard at any construction jobs that came his way. When he was between assignments in the construction industry, Stan would pick up handyman jobs from clients who paid him under the table. When one totalled up the under the table cash payments that Stan received from his customers, he made a satisfactory income. Stan was also naturally gifted when it came to electronics. He possessed a natural gift for repairing and refurbishing old computers. This skill became a third source of revenue for Stan Kowalski. A secondary benefit to many of his jobs was physical in nature. They heavy lifting required on his construction projects produced well-developed muscles throughout Stan's body. Although this type of work yielded a great deal of muscle mass to his physique, Stan desired more muscular definition. In order to produce a ripped, cut up body, Stan had developed a workout regimen that was designed to produce muscular definition. This physical training routine could be practised in the rec room of Aileen Drexler's home. Stan would often admire his impressive physique when he looked in the mirror and could probably say that he now had developed a body very similar to his namesake, Stanley Kowalski, played by Marlon Brando in the famous play A Streetcar Named Desire.

It seems apt that in a year of so much turmoil, angst and chaotic worry that we would end 2020 on a street corner in Bronx, NYC. Much of Radio Juxtapoz' year took an interesting turn in NYC in March, as suddenly a pandemic had taken hold of the city while co-hosts Doug Gillen and Evan Pricco were producing podcasts for Armory Week. For what the world has gone through, and for what NYC endured in those early months, to be here talking to Steven Sweatpants as he was finishing up a photoshoot with the NY Knicks felt like we came to an incredible full circle odyssey. Steven "Sweatpants" Irby had one of those years that you talk about decades later. Already one of the editors of the wildly popular Street Dreams mag, he, like most of us, thought his 2020 would be on permanent pause. A few shoots, maybe, but nothing like what we saw this summer across America. With the George Floyd murder sparking protests in almost every city, Steven was assigned by the New Yorker to capture images of protests on the streets of his hometown of NYC, delving in as both a photojournalist, an activist and a man himself. His incredible photos were of someone embedded but with an eagle eye, participating himself but also capturing the mood of Black America and also of a unity that became the calling of many for the rest of this year. His work continued with the Washington Post, New York Magazine, and we at Juxtapoz featured him as both an artist and documentarian in our Winter 2021 issue. In this candid talk, Steven talks about his start in photography, his family and deep roots in NYC, how to be present and active during a protest, his particular camera toolkit, exuding confidence and the moment he knew he captured one of the great photos of 2020. The Radio Juxtapoz podcast is hosted by FIFTH WALL TV's Doug Gillen and Juxtapoz editor, Evan Pricco. Episode 061 was recorded via Skype from NYC, San Francisco, London, December 11, 2020.

Imagina o tamanho do currículo desse cara? Valeu!! In this episode I am joined by my love, Jomar Victoria. He is a talented photographer from Cloverdale, BC, currently working for the Vancouver company Roden Gray and is also apart of the Street Dreams Magazine crew. In this episode we discuss his post-secondary program transition, why and how he got into photography, and the path that led him to the Street Dreams crew. Jomar shares his insight on preparation (influenced by Kobe’s ‘mamba mentality’) and how photography helped him become more present. (The discussion of photography begins around 40 minutes into the episode.) First we start off with the “random questions” round : If you could do something for someone you love what would you do? What do you love about your hometown? Who’s your favourite teacher? Which naturally leads into us discussing: The impact of a good teacher Asian stereotypes and representation Check out Jomar’s work on his Instagram @jomarvictoria Check out the Street Dreams crew work @streetdreamsmag Thanks for listening! #18 What taste is made of: Brad Weiss talks pig farming and the meaning of food in America

The Familiar Strange

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 22, 2018 45:29

"Livestock are essential to our lives. We live in a world that is saturated with livestock, and not just with the food that we eat, but with the lives that we live and in the other byproducts that come through livestock production." Brad Weiss, head of the anthropology department at the College of William and Mary and author of the book "Real Pigs: shifting values in the field of local pork," talks to our own Simon Theobald about the intersections of American farming with big industry, animal life, and international social movements. In this funny and accessible conversation, they talk through the process of building a research project where you are, instead of traveling to a distant "field;" how taste arises out of relationships and ideas, as much as from the food in your mouth; and how it feels to know the name and personality of the animal you're eating. QUOTES “I knew that to study local food, or the slow food movement, which is an international movement, to do that would be beyond the grasp of any one ethnographer. But I thought, if I'm in North Carolina, I could look at pigs... pig production was seen as an icon of that [slow food] movement.” “It has a certain kind of moral cachet, it was a certain kind of hipster cachet as well, what it doesn't have is the real economic viability.” “Part of what that entails [making local pigs] is creating the idea that to be local is somehow significant and important... What makes something local is having a community who is interested in making something local.” “Locality is... it's not about a spatial plot, as though you can just sort of map the universe and say, 'this place is equidistant from this other place... so that makes it a place.' No. It's about these values. It's about the way the social relationships are meaningfully acted upon to create relationships that are important and significant to the people who, and they may not even live in that place... It's not necessarily that you're from that locality, but it is that you have an idea that place matters.” “So taste is not simply something that is in the thing, let alone in the thing because it emerges out of a particular kind of place. But taste is a little bit like place itself. It comes out of a commitment to recognising that there is something important about thinking about how food is located in a particular context, and then you can experience that, and you can learn how to come to experience that.” "You cannot help but taste in the context of memory, in the context of social interaction." Many interests often begin solo. Collecting sneakers, shooting photos, or maybe cooking are acts that can take shape in various forms. But it’s the power of community and connection that not only draws us in but keeps us rooted and engaged. A strong community provides a balance of support and challenge, ensuring that we all collectively reap the benefits of a shared commitment. Our digital generation has been spoiled with opportunities to connect and engage online. The ability to dip in and out of a conversation is a concept worth noting. There are communities where sometimes many offer a lot of their time and effort, while other times, people are simply passively consuming. But what happens when you introduce a physical component to it all and bring these worlds offline? Narration by < --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/maekan/support

Episode Notes Nicki Minaj got into a public spat with shoe designer Giuseppe Zanotti. She accused them of using her name without compensating her. We wanted to know if she would've been treated differently if she were a man. Cherry Poppins from the Officially Street Podcast came on as a guest to give us her perspective as well. Nas' biopic "Street Dreams" is coming to BET. With the recent success of the New Edition biopic, can BET go 2 for 2? Rozay thinks it's too gritty for BET. Jay-z gave Big Sean a Roc-a-fella chain. How exactly does a non-Roc artist earn a Roc chain? Furthermore, should 'Ye, head of GOOD music (Sean's label) feel misrespected by Jay's move? Let's be real, skateboarding wasn't always as glamorous as the X-Games, Big Air, and million dollar sponsorships. For most, it was an escape, something that bonded people together, and allowed you to define yourself. Nino Scalia was someone who had little stability growing up. Moving from city to city, there wasn't an opportunity to establish roots, or even have close friends - and if it did happen, it was taken away just as fast. When introduced to skateboarding, Nino instantly found something he could grab on to. As his family finally settled in South Philly, it was just in time for Nino to be a part of what became one of the most influential skateboarding cities in the world. With other greats, like Rob Dyrdek, Josh Kalis, Stevie Williams, and Jason Dill, there was a new age of pioneers to push skateboarding forward. Nino's story takes us through that special era and his days of skating (and getting arrested) at LOVE Park, becoming the Team Manager for the legendary Alien Workshop, and later working with Pharrell in developing the Ice Cream skate team. If you want to get a taste of what this was like, Nino captures it perfectly in the indie-film, Street Dreams. Through all that he's has done, Nino will tell you that he was never ready for any of it. There's no perfect moment, or right time. Just go for it, and if you fall, get back on your board and try again. #MamaWeMadeIt See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
