Today's spirited Daily Star Devotion audio podcast dubbed - JESUS ALSO HANDLES YOUR STINKS is by Pastor Mike S. Banda of Glorious Trinity Synagogues (G.T.S) in Accra, Ghana. You may have made mistakes upon mistakes, being disgraced and embrased yourself with your actions, inactions, associations or conditions and therefore forsaken, rejected, abandoned by family, colleagues, friends, lovers because you are a shame, rotten apple, a black sheep and stink very bad. Jesus Christ however, will never reject, forsake or ignore you and still wants you because He's is your restorer, cleanser, righteousness, strength, healer, perfect lover, hope and future. Obviously, Lazarus's sisters laid him in a grave for some days following his death and they protested against the opening of the tomb because of the stinks and possible decays but Jesus Christ ignored them and went on ahead to bring Lazarus back to life. Jesus further made them to untie him and had the grave clothes removed and obviously the stinkines disappeared. Because of your dirtiness, fallen short state or stinks ; many will think and conclude that, your life & future is over or destroyed and though they will be saying good byes, seeing doomed predictably and given up on you : Jesus Christ will come into your life to welcome you back, grace you, beautify and give you a prosperous future full of blessings, good health and peace. Although, you stink still dont give up nor commit suicide but come under Jesus's Umbrella of love, mercy, strength, grace, power, newness because: He also handles our dirt and stinks. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly When I first became a Lutheran at age 18 in 1982, our congregation had two hymnals in the pew: The elder statesman of the Lutheran world: The Lutheran Hymnal (1941) and a little red new generation paperback volume called Worship Supplement (1969). We would soon ditch the TLH for the green Lutheran Book of Worship (1978) - the joint project with the churches that became the ELCA, and which was rejected by the Missouri Synod - over the objection of the congregation's Worship Committee, which recommended the adoption of the LCMS-approved variation of LBW, the blue Lutheran Worship (1982). I don't know all of the political machinations of the congregation, but I did later learn that the senior pastor had authored a resolution that the Missouri Synod join the ELCA. Maybe that had something to do with the congregation being strapped with the ***A hymnal for many years. Being a new Lutheran, I actually read through the TLH and the WS. The rubrics in TLH, which more resembled Adam's loincloth than the historic vestments of the church - were bolstered by more detail in WS as to how to worship as a Lutheran. Like the 1966 Clint Eastwood spaghetti western, WS was a mixed bag: the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. But in the interest of starting with the Law and ending with the Gospel, let's look at them in reverse order… The Ugly The ugly would include things such as the horrible rewording of the Lord's Prayer. This was, after all, the year of Woodstock. I think some of the folks on the Commission on Worship (COW) had been tripping on some bad acid while listening to Country Joe and the Fish's “Vietnam Song.” This is an example of pure progressivism: change for change's sake. Even the option for the version of the Our Father that English speakers of every liturgical denomination has said for 500 nearly years was excised. And our liturgical overlords were very determined on this point. The boomers tried for more years than the Beatles were together to foist this “New and Improved - Now How Much Would You Pay” verbiage on a church that didn't want it. A modernized version of the Lord's prayer made it to LBW and LW, as like unto cockroaches, it proved hard to exterminate, but was finally put out of our Missouri in the latest hymnal, Lutheran Service Book (2006). It seems like the Commission on Worship had, by this point, gone through rehab, kicked the habit, and had come to Jesus. The traditional wording hath won the victory. Thanks be to God. The other “ugly” is the introduction of the Reformed ceremony of the fraction in The Holy Eucharist II (page 61). Again, LSD is the only reasonable explanation. Just say no, kids. The Bad The Bad parts include the goofy pictographs indicating the rubrics for when to sit, stand, or kneel. I think this was about the same time when international road signs with stick figures were making their grand debut, and who knows how confusing the words “sit” and “stand” and “kneel” would be as rubrics in a hymnal? Again, the modern COW - no longer on its dope bender - has seen the light, as these silly ideograms have been replaced by plain English in LSB. After all, if English was good enough for King James and Jesus… Also, the COW aped the papacy and the Green New Deal, I mean, the Novus Ordo, by introducing the Holy Handshake ritual. Sometimes, this is called the “passing of the peace” - but to me, it is like passing a kidney stone. Another Bad is more along the lines of inexplicable: there is no confession of the Creed in Holy Eucharist II and III. There is no explanation for this. The Good The Good includes the restoration of the word “catholic” in the Apostles and Nicene Creeds (which was deep-sixed by the Blue Hymnal Boys). Also a Good is the rubric for the sign of the cross at the crescendo of both creeds in which we boldly confess the resurrection. The Nicene Creed includes the restoration of the first person plural “We believe…” instead of the first person singular “I believe…” This is how the Creed was written, and how it was confessed by the Church for centuries. It is not our individual confession only, which is implied by our modern American penchant for “I believe…” but is rather the Church's collective confession - “We believe.” This change did not survive the transition from LBW to LW - itself a mélange of Good, Bad, and Ugly. The inclusion of the prayer offices of Prime, Noonday, and Compline are indeed very good. The COW renamed the Office of Sext to “Noonday.” This was, after all, the year after the Summer of Love. I suppose they didn't want to give people ideas about some new form of contemporary worship. The Office of Compline is one of the greatest additions to our hymnals' services - and LBW/LW rounded it out with its inclusion of traditional chant tones and extended rubrics. Compline got its toe in the door and was reintroduced into the North American Lutheran life by its inclusion in WS. One of the best features is the “Suggestions for the Worshiper” on pages 15-16. It consists of rubrics for the laity, and goes into more detail than did its equivalent in TLH on page 4. This section explains the sign of the cross, and gives instructions for doing it. It encourages crossing oneself “at the Trinitarian Invocation, at the last phrase of the Creed, before and after receiving the elements of Holy Communion, and at the Benediction.” Such rubrics actually help in the restoration of liturgical practice in American Lutheranism, as it will placate some “concerns” that “people are having, pastor (but I can't say who)” that this stuff is “too Catholic.” After all, if CPH says it's okay, it must be okay. At least some people will accept the imprimatur of the Holy Office of the Publishing House from the Violet Vatican. Others will still demur, but a half glass is better than an empty glass, as Gottesblog's whiskey-drinkers believe, teach, and confess. This section also includes rubrics for bowing: “on entering the church, during the first half of the Gloria Patri, on approaching the altar for Holy Communion, and on leaving the pew after the conclusion of the service. Bowing more deeply or kneeling is customary at the words of the Nicene Creed ‘he was born… and became man.' Bowing only the head is appropriate at any mention of the sacred name of Jesus, especially where this occurs in the Creed.” I learned the profound little prayer upon receiving the elements from this section, a variation of which I still say as the celebrant: Lord, I am not worthy that You have come under my roof, but only say the word, and Your servant will be healed. These rubrics also teach the reader to confess his “Amen” when receiving the elements after the pastor has said, “The body of Christ” and “The blood of Christ.” This Worship Supplement's rubrical catechesis shaped my piety as a new Lutheran attending Divine Service. Inexplicably to me, precious few in the pews actually followed these rubrics. But some did. There is also “A Form of Private Confession and Absolution” including helpful rubrics. There was no such liturgy in TLH. Another enhancement of TLH is the fact that the pastor's chant tones are indicated, thus giving the celebrant “permission” to chant the liturgy - something that was missing in TLH. I've heard several theories, such as the World War II paper shortage or a hurried effort to publish the book, but people often make such assertions with no evidence. The TLH version of the Pastor's Chant Tones did come out as a separate volume a couple years later, but by that time, the weird hybrid of the pastor speaking and the congregation chanting had already calcified, like clogged arteries. Some pastors are still accused of secret Romanism to this very day if they chant their parts of the liturgy - even though our hymnals have indicated these chant tones now since the days of John Cougar's “Hurts So Good,” Asia's “Heat of the Moment,” and Van Halen's “Pretty Woman.” That's almost 40 years, as long as the Israelites wandered in the desert. And we know what the purpose of that timeframe was. Maybe some of our members of a certain age see LSB as a Russian conspiracy to put us back under the pope. OK boomers. Perhaps the best Good of the Worship Supplement is the hymn section. So much of the hymnody that we now take for granted was introduced to North American Lutherans by this resource. And, believe it or not, many of these hymns are stronger versions than what eventually filtered its way into LSB - including some hymns that retain gendered language and even Elizabethan English. Apparently, not everyone was dropping acid. There were clearly a few Nixon voters in the old COW Some of the “new” hymns include: Lo! He Comes with Clouds Descending Creator of the Stars of Night O Savior, Rend the Heavens Wide O Come, All Ye Faithful Angels We Have Heard on High Let All Together Praise Our God In Dulci Jubilo (in Latin and English) Gentle Mary Laid Her Child What Child is This O Wondrous Type! O Vision Fair My Song is Love Unknown Sing, My Tongue, the Glorious Battle At the Lamb's High Feast We Sing With High Delight, Let Us Unite O Sons and Daughters of the King The Victimae Paschali Celebration (LSB: Christians, to the Pascal Victim) This Joyful Eastertide I Bind Unto Myself Today Thy Strong Word Did Cleave the Darkness O Love, How Deep, How Broad, How High Son of God, Eternal Savior Holy Spirit, Ever Dwelling From All Thy Saints in Warfare (LSB: For All Your Saints in Warfare) In Adam We Have All Been One Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence In Thee is Gladness Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise God of Grace and God of Glory Before the Ending of the Day There are also improved tunes for some hymns, such as: Hark! A Thrilling Voice is Sounding The Royal Banners Forward Go Come Ye Faithful, Raise the Strain Lord God, Thy Praise We Sing (Luther's antiphonal Te Deum) One glorious hymn that was introduced in WS, made it to LW, but did not make the cut in LSB is: O Kingly Love, That Faithfully So although Worship Supplement is largely forgotten, like the fact that a band named Quill played Woodstock - there seems to be no relation to the eponymous Fort Wayne professor - it has been influential in the shaping of our worship in the LCMS. It has retired and sits on pastor's shelves, only being thumbed through for the sake of nostalgia or research. And like the 1960s itself, it is a mixed bag. And so as a tribute to Worship Supplement, here is a video of the earworm that we are all hearing right now. You're welcome. Lechem Panim #114 "Luke The Physician" (Acts 1:1-3) Pastor Cameron Ury

The Lechem Panim Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 23, 2020 14:16

Hello, and welcome to Lechem Panim. As we have started a new series on the book of Acts, we have been taking a look at the testimony of Luke (author of the both the Gospel of Luke and the book of Acts). Luke had become the companion of Paul and one the early Church's greatest historians. Now although Luke writes as a historian, Luke's occupation before this had been quite different. He had been a physician. Medical Machinery— I remember not long ago I went to visit a gentleman in the hospital; to both minister and pray with him and just be with him through a very difficult time. And as I stepped into that hospital room I found myself almost instantly surrounded by all kinds of medical equipment. Now I didn't know what much of that equipment does. But I remember a nurse came in with a rather large piece of machinery. And as she proceeded to hook my friend up to it and to press other pieces of machinery onto his chest, I saw on the computer screen live video images of my friend's heart. And as she moved the equipment around, she began to take precise computer measurements, calculating every sound; every pulse. Laid out in visual form were the wavelengths; the very heartbeat of my friend. Now that kind of thing is awe-inspiring to me. But it also leads me to wonder what it must have been like to receive medical care in the first-century world of Jesus. In talking about this, my wife remarked to me how she could not even imagine giving birth during that time. And in fact, if she had, she would probably never have made it because of how our son was positioned in her womb. She very likely would have died in childbirth. Conditions and injuries that we would consider relatively minor were so much more dangerous then. Some of you tuning in today may be in the medical field. Have you ever imagined what it would have been like to treat somebody in ancient times or during this time period in and around the life of Christ? Luke's Focus on Christ's Birth— Well, Luke didn't have to imagine, because that was his primary occupation; he was a physician. And interestingly, he is the gospel writer who gives us the most details concerning the events in and surrounding the birth of Jesus. Maybe as a physician he was just so captivated and couldn't get over the fact that in the womb of Mary; that womb that medically sustained Jesus, was the very Creator of the Universe who was at that moment already sustaining her; that her very blood which was bringing Him life would one day be poured out on the cross, bringing life to her. Luke's Focus on The Healings of Jesus— Also we find that Luke places special emphasis on the healing ministry of Jesus; and when we understand he was a physician, we can kind of see through his eyes and recognize why he was so fascinated by it. Jesus needed no equipment; Jesus never prescribed any medication; He never had to make a single surgical cut. He merely spoke and the worst conditions imaginable; even those that were beyond the hope of cure; conditions that Luke had encountered over and over again, were cured. I wonder how many times Luke had to tell someone, “I'm sorry, you will never see again,” “I'm sorry, you will never walk again,” “I'm sorry, but this infliction is incurable.” Luke presents Jesus in a way that only a physician could; because Jesus had succeeded in many of the same kinds of situations where Luke himself had failed. Only one time in all four of the Gospel accounts is Jesus called or thought of as a medical Physician; and it is here in the Gospel of Luke; Luke 4:23. Luke simply could not get over the power of God made manifest in Jesus Christ in the absolute worst of medical situations; how every illness and every defect left at the mere touch (or even just the mere spoken word) of Jesus. And Luke, like Matthew, also recognizes this as a fulfillment of prophecy. Isaiah 35:5-6a (NIV)— 5 Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped. 6 Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy. At one point John the Baptist sends messengers to ask Jesus if He truly is the promised Messiah. And Luke says in… Luke 7:20-22 (NIV)— 20 When the men came to Jesus, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to you to ask, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?'” 21 At that very time Jesus cured many who had diseases, sicknesses and evil spirits, and gave sight to many who were blind. 22 So he replied to the messengers, “Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. So Luke points out how Jesus knowingly fulfilled these prophecies from Isaiah; the last of which is that the good news is proclaimed to the poor. Luke the Gentile— And this is another one of Luke's major themes (particularly in his Gospel); [Jesus' compassion for Gentiles, Samaritans, women, children, tax collectors, sinners, and others often regarded as outcasts in Israel. Every time he mentions a tax collector (3:12; 5:27; 7:29; 15:1; 18:10-13; 19:2), it is in a positive sense.] In a time in which women were on the bottom rung of society, [Luke emphasized the central role of women in the life and ministry of our Lord (e.g., 7:12-15, 37-50; 8:2-3, 43-48; 10:38-42; 13:11-13; 21:2-4; 23:27-29, 49, 55-56).] And the reason Luke has a special place in his heart for outcasts was because he himself was an outcast. In Colossians 4:11-14, Luke is clearly distinguished from those of Paul's fellow workers who are of the circumcision. He isn't circumcised because he's a gentile. And in fact, that makes him the only non-Jewish writer of the New Testament. And because he was not a Jew, according to Jewish thought he was not an inheritor of the promise. And yet in his Gospel Luke shows how Jesus opened up the way for anybody, no matter who they were or what they had been through, to become a part of the family of God; that the mercy of God has been extended to all people; whether Jew or Gentile. And in Luke's first book, the Gospel of Luke, he reveals this as the mission of Jesus; and here in Luke's sequel to the book (the sequel being, of course, the book of Acts) we see revealed how that mission unfolded in the early life of the Church. Both books are united by that same central theme, and together they make up the largest part of the New Testament. Now where did Luke get this idea? Well, remember he was a companion of Paul, who wrote the epistles long before he wrote his gospel and no doubt mentored him. And Paul had said in… Galatians 3:28 (NIV)— 28 There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. The Compassion of Jesus— Luke found hope and exceeding joy that he, though an outcast, could become a part of the family of God. This is why Luke was so fascinated by the compassion Jesus extended to all who were considered lost. In his Gospel he therefore records more of the parables of Jesus than any other gospel; many in which God's mission (carried out by Jesus Christ) is shown to be one of pursuing; God being likened to characters who are searching for something that has been lost. He is like a shepherd seeking a lost sheep (Luke 15:1-7); He is like a woman searching for a lost wedding coin (Luke 15:8-10); He is like a father yearning for the return of a lost son (Luke 15:11-32). A.W. Tozer once wrote a book that has since become one of the great Christian classics, entitled The Pursuit of God. Yet this is somewhat of a misnomer because here we find that what Luke was captivated with was God's pursuit of us; Jesus is seen to be the one who pursues us into the darkness; into the night; so that He might bring us back to God. This was absolutely central to Luke's theology. Luke 19:10 (ESV)— 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” A Misplaced Phone and Document— I remember one week when my wife and I misplaced two things. She misplaced her cell phone and I misplaced a very important document. And so on two separate occasions in that same week we found ourselves searching all over the house, overturning all kinds of things in order to find that cell phone and that document. And in each case there was joy when that item was discovered.  A Misplaced Engagement Ring— I can still remember back when she and I first got engaged, her tearfully telling me some days afterwards that she had misplaced her engagement ring. She had woken up, looked at her hand, and discovered that it was gone. And she had been going frantically through every part of her dorm looking for it. And soon afterwards, after being allowed in to help her search, we found it in her bed; having slipped off while she was asleep. And I still remember the joy in her face and the tears in her eyes when she joyously put the ring back on her finger. God's Pursuit of us— And I just think, what an amazing thing that God pursues each and every one of us with just as much (in fact infinitely more) fervency. God does not leave one stone unturned in His pursuit of us. We are all valuable to Him; Jew or Gentile, man or woman, adult or child, righteous or sinner; rich or poor. God is pursuing you. And He will find you if you let Him. And He will make you His own. And in every healing Luke records, he shows how Jesus points people to the part of them that needs to be healed the most; their hearts. In Jesus, God has provided that ultimate healing. All we have to do is receive Him, surrender to Him, and allow Him (as our Great Physician) to heal and transform our hearts. And so I want to encourage you today, if you need to receive that healing today, invite Him into your life and say, “Lord, I need you to heal my sin; I need you to heal my brokenness; I am crippled, blind, deaf and mute without the abiding presence of your Holy Spirit in my life. Come fill me, heal me, change, and transform me.” Receive healing from Jesus. Amen.

JESUS ALSO ANNOUNCED THE KINGDOM, Chapter 19 of Kingdom of God Volume 2  Pages 143-149 From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. (Matt. 4:17)  For several hundred years the great prophets had foretold the coming of the Promised Messiah. The children of Israel sang about Him, mentioned Him in their scriptures, wrote His name on their door posts, included Him in their eating habits, and centered their traditions and customs around Him. His coming was anticipated by the more righteous Israelites as the greatest event in the world.  The scriptures indicate He was known by many names. In Bruce R. McConkie’s Mormon Doctrine, over 200 names are listed. (See page 127.) His coming was certainly more than just a personal appearance. What great message did He bring? What good news did He tell the Jews? He had more to say than just to keep following their Levitical laws and customs.  At the beginning of His ministry, the Messiah went up on the mountain and delivered what has since been called “the greatest sermon ever.” (See Matt. 5 to 7.) How interesting that in that Sermon on the Mount He mentioned God’s Kingdom about ten times. That “Kingdom” seemed to be one of the focal points for the whole sermon, which was emphasized when he instructed, “Seek ye first the Kingdom of God.” (Matt. 6:33) http://ogdenkraut.com/?page_id=139

Life Application: What storms of life do you have going on right now? Into what “boat” do you need to invite Jesus—Your heart? A situation at work? On behalf of a loved one? First Church? Something else?  Trust that this God will always meet us in our doubts and storms. How can I more fully live into the Jesus story so that I might tell and share the Jesus story?  Who can I better share the truth, beauty, and goodness of Jesus with today? Does my life carry the distinct, “terroir” flavor of Jesus? Also compare Matthew 14:22-36 with John 6:16-24 and Mark 6:45-56.

Overview- God Is A Rewarder Of Those That Diligently Seek Him. Matthew 28:1-20. In our message today we look at one of God’s amazing promises. In Hebrews 11:6, God says He is a rewarder of those that diligently seek Him. Matthew starts off the amazing account of Christ rising from the dead to defeat death and satan, by telling us about the first people that had the opportunity of experiencing His promise in Hebrews 11:6. Who were those people? The Mary’s How does God reward the Mary’s for diligently seeking Jesus?
