This week, we take a look at your heart on Special Episode #2 of the Christmas Break series on A Cup of Gratitude. This is a busy season, but we must keep our eyes on Jesus - More than any other time we can be distracted by busyness during the Holidays, we must choose to keep our focus on the KING - Jesus gives everything for us to be reborn and we must set aside all of the worldly things at this time of the year to remain in Him - Isn't it ironic that the time we celebrate Christ's birth is the time we set Him aside to “do all the things” that come with the Holiday - When we choose Jesus, He continues to transform us, and with great Hope for us all Philippians 1:6 promises that God will keep working on us until Christ returns - We begin in a fallen state with hearts of stone - God promises a new heart - “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them.” (EZK 36) Jesus calls this process being “born again from above” (John 3:3). When we are born again, God performs a heart transplant, as it were, He gives us a new heart - On special episode 2 of A Cup of Gratitude we will look at the constant process of turning the soil of our hearts - If we don't let God work on them by abiding in him they will begin to harden, Collect rocks, and grow weeds - God is transforming us, breaking up the ground, removing the rocks, and pulling the thorns as we learn to abide and remain in Jesus - And I am excited to be featuring a song by Singer/songwriter Amanda Nolan has had a passion and drive for music since she could remember. She has been creating music since she was 11 and hasn't stopped. Her music and life changed when she found herself in the lowest moment of her life, struggling with severe anxiety and OCD. Today in Pt 3 we're going to close out this mini-sermon series and we'll focus on John 17:20-23. In these verses Jesus prays for the church to be unified. On the eve of His excruciating death, He utters an appeal for unity. That says that we need supernatural strength, we need God's strength and help in this area. The very fact that Jesus prayed for unity indicates that we cannot accomplish this on our own. So how do we do that? Come join us and we'll answer that and much more as we hear from God's Word. Thanks for listening. God bless you! I am going to choose today to be on Your side of the battle. My desire today is to claim victory over Satan by putting on the whole armor of God so I can stand firm against his schemes.   Today I put on the “Helmet of Salvation” reminding me that I am in Your family and on Your side. Fill me with the reality that as a Christian, Your Holy Spirit has taken up residency in my life; that my sins have been forgiven by Your precious blood shed on the cross. Thank you that I have the assurance that I have become a citizen of Your eternal kingdom and that I have an unimaginable inheritance waiting for me in heaven.   Thank you that you have given me an offensive piece of armor to fight the enemy, the “Sword of the Spirit”, the Bible, which will help me discern right from wrong when I am attacked by Satan. Lord, I'm asking that Your Holy   Spirit give me an insatiable desire for Your Word so it becomes my lifeline. Please give me insight as I study Your Word and the ability and wisdom to practice it and live it!   As I prepare for today, I don't want to forget to arm myself with the “Belt of Truth” so I can distinguish between Your truth and Satan's lies. Just as soldiers in Biblical days needed a belt to keep their loose garments from tripping them, I need Your help to avoid getting tripped and falling on my face spiritually. Please help me to know Your truth, to be honest and free from deceit, a person of integrity throughout the course of my day. Please give me wisdom to make wise choices today.   Lord, a “got to have” piece of my armor today is the “Breastplate of Righteousness”. Jesus, please protect my heart and character from Satan's blows today. Help me to act in obedience to Your will in the face of opposition. Father, please make me more like Your Son, Jesus – MORE loving, holy, patient, faithful, grateful, kind, merciful, compassionate (you can go on….).   Lord I can't start this day either without the “Shield of Faith”. Just as the Roman soldiers of biblical days had a large shield that covered their entire body, I ask for Your protection from my head to my feet. Lord, I put my confidence totally in You. I ask for Your protection from evil thoughts entering into my head today. Take away the desire for my feet to lead me where I shouldn't be. Protect my heart with Your shield of faith as arrows of discouragement come my way in the forms of criticism, hardship, stress, and anxiety that are shot my way. Lord, as I face (you name it...is it illness, job loss, parenting problems, marital difficulties, etc.) may my reliance in Your faithfulness increase and help me to respond in obedience to Your will.   Lastly, as I get fully dressed for the day with Your armor, I need the “Shoes of the Gospel of Peace”. Thank You how You gave the visual of the importance of my “Gospel Shoes”. Just as a soldier's shoes in Paul's day had cleats on them bottom to allow him to move without slipping and sliding, I need Your “shoes” to help me to advance Your kingdom. Please give me the courage and the right words to share the Good News of Christ with others...to move forward into these situations with my confidence in You instead of retreating from them. May “I Love to Tell the Story of Jesus and His Love” become the cry of my heart. Get me ready today Lord to share the Good news of Jesus with my lost family members and friends.   Lord, I'm now ready to face this day with You by my side! In your precious Name I pray, Amen. _______________________________________ Make Us One (Twila Paris) – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWyJNLV0770

The big question- do you know Jesus-- More than that, do you KNOW him-- It is through a living relationship with Christ through faith that we access the very power which raised him from the grave, and this power enables us to be better servants. Paul then tells how his identity with the Lord comes through suffering. Furthermore, his end goal, the one thing he hoped for above all else was his future resurrection. We see how believers routinely use language in their eschatology very different from Paul's. Where they talk of heaven, he talks of resurrection.

After setting the stage in our last episode with the distinctives and circumstances of John's Gospel, here we turn to its message: being born again (or is it from above?), how the Father and the Son can be one and yet the Father greater than the Son, whether John's commendation of love of friends is a retrogression from Paul's enemy-love, and how the confrontation with Pilate and the powers functions as the mega-exorcism consolidating the individual exorcism accounts in the Synoptics. The word "more" means something in addition. When we speak of more, we usually are talking about money, cookies, or wants. Then when we get older we talk about more eyesight, more health, more warmth, or more mail-box money. Young or old, we still want more! We often forget, we serve a God of more. He desires for us He desires for us to live in His abundance. I am not speaking of all the material and physical things I mentioned earlier. I am talking about more of Jesus. We sing "More About Jesus", why do we not need more of Jesus? More of Jeus is available and a closer walk is possible. Salvation is just the beginning. Can we be honest this morning, we have as much of Jesus as we allow Him to control. We place ourselves, our self-centeredness, and even our sins to rule sometimes in our lives. Today, we will look at how Elisha prepared to take over Elijah's ministry. Elisha asked for more of Jesus when he asked for a "double portion" of the Spirit Elijah had. By the way, in 1 Kings and 2 Kings, Elijah was used of God to work eight miracles. In 2 Kings, Elisha was used to work sixteen miracles. So, it is possible to obtaining more and being used more. Look at how we can have more of Jesus as Elisha did. God wants total control so we can do more and be closer! Rev. Mark Lockhart Pastor

Personal God-I believe God is involved in and cares about my daily life.Psalm 121:1-6 I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade on your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. Scripture: Matthew 12:15-21Jesus, aware of this, withdrew from there. And many followed him, and he healed them all and ordered them not to make him known. This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah: “Behold, my servant whom I have chosen, my beloved with whom my soul is well pleased. I will put my Spirit upon him, and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles. He will not quarrel or cry aloud, nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets; a bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not quench, until he brings justice to victory; and in his name the Gentiles will hope.”Intro:The brief passage we are going to look at Sunday is a refreshing breather from the rest of the difficulty found in chapters 11 and 12—which record the first major rejection of Christ, led by the Pharisees. After Jesus put them to shame by showing that their Sabbath traditions were hardhearted, illogical, and unscriptural, “the Pharisees went out, and counseled together against Him, as to how they might destroy Him” (12:14). He exposed the evil of the Pharisees in doing that, and they hated Him for it. From that time on, they plotted how to kill Him.Think of it. God’s specialists in human salvation counseling with Caesar’s specialists in human slaughter. People who were supposed to be agents of love joining forces with agents of hate. Message of the Passage:“In this passage Jesus' character comes through clearly. Matthew is relating to us something of Jesus' heart here. He really began that in Matthew chapter 12, verse one, when He told you the story of the meeting between the Pharisees and the Lord Jesus. He's showing you what Jesus is like. He's revealing Jesus' character to you and He's providing, for contrast, the religious leaders of Jesus' day. Now remember, the Pharisees have had a bad name for about 2000 years amongst Christians, but these were very well-respected religious leaders. These were lay people, part of a movement designed to revitalize religion in Israel. They were highly exalted in the eyes of the people, and yet Matthew contrasts their hearts and their desire to destroy the Lord Jesus Christ to the Lord Jesus' compassion for the sick, for the downcast, for the marginal, and so we see Christ's character in stark contrast to the Pharisees. Matthew Henry says, ‘As in the midst of Christ's greatest humiliations, there were proofs of His dignity. So in the midst of His greatest honors, He gave proofs of His humility.’ And so even as He does these works - these miracles - and speaks words of grace, He had opportunity here in this passage to show His humility. And that's precisely what Matthew points us to.”In calling attention to Jesus' character, Matthew is not simply wanting us to stand back and admire Him; Matthew wants us to believe Him. Matthew is calling us to commitment to Christ. He is calling us to trust in Him, to love Him, to believe Him, to worship Him, to follow Him.Personal Reflection: Use the following questions to help review the application of God’s Word to our Head (What does God want me to know?), to our Heart (What does God want me to desire/value?), and to our Hands (What does God want me to do?)Looking back at the message, is there anything that especially resonated or challenged you? From this passage, what aspect of Jesus’ character and work is particularly meaningful and encouraging to you?How would your daily living change if you were responding to the situations and relationships of life from a heart filled with hope in the Lord? What was Jesus response to the plots against His life? What does Matthew 12:18-21 which is taken from Isaiah 42:1-4 tell us about the Messiah? Did Jesus fulfill all of the prophecies recorded in this section of scripture? How many prophecies of the Messiah were fulfilled in Jesus?“More than 300 Messianic prophecies like this were made in the Old Testament and then fulfilled through Jesus' life, death and resurrection. The chances of one person fulfilling a mere eight of these prophecies are one-in-100,000,000,000,000,000. For one person to fulfill 48 of these prophecies, the number becomes staggering - one chance in 10-to-the-157th power. Add to that the 250 other prophecies, and it becomes impossible for any other person except Jesus to ever fit that particular sequence of time and events.” (Evidence that Demands a Verdict - Josh McDowell. P. 157)If Jesus had ministered during 2018 instead of in Bible times, could He have accomplished the same things by being meek and humble as He is described in these passages?Since we are called to follow the example of Jesus, how do we compare to this example of Christ?

The Names and Titles of Jesus – Jesus The Word/Logos This series of the names and titles of Jesus will give us a more in-depth understanding of Jesus Christ our Lord. This is the second in the series. The following is an outline. 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was with God in the beginning. 3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.4In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome[a] it. 6There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. 8He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. 9The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.10He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—13children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. 14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15(John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’”) 16Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given. 17For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. and[b] is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known. Exodus 33 :20 But," he said, "you cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live.“ 1 Timothy 6:16 He alone is immortal and dwells in unapproachable light. No one has ever seen Him, nor can anyone see Him. To Him be honor and eternal dominion! Amen. 18No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and[b] is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known. Jesus the Word Pre-existent Co-existent Self-existent John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was with God in the beginning. 3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.4In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. 14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. 1Co 1:24 but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God Col 1:15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation Heb 1:6 And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says, “Let all God's angels worship him. 22“The LORD brought me forth as the first of his works,[c][d] before his deeds of old; 23I was formed long ages ago, at the very beginning, when the world came to be. 24When there were no watery depths, I was given birth, when there were no springs overflowing with water; 25before the mountains were settled in place, before the hills, I was given birth, 26before he made the world or its fields or any of the dust of the earth. 27I was there when he set the heavens in place, when he marked out the horizon on the face of the deep, 28when he established the clouds above and fixed securely the fountains of the deep, 29when he gave the sea its boundary so the waters would not overstep his command, and when he marked out the foundations of the earth. 30 Then I was constantly[e] at his side. I was filled with delight day after day, rejoicing always in his presence, 31rejoicing in his whole world and delighting in mankind. 32“Now then, my children, listen to me; blessed are those who keep my ways. 33Listen to my instruction and be wise; do not disregard it. 34Blessed are those who listen to me, watching daily at my doors, waiting at my doorway. 35For those who find me find life and receive favor from the LORD. 36But those who fail to find me harm themselves; all who hate me love death.” Predetermined Counsel of God. Eph 1:4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, 1Pe 1:19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 20 He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake 7No, we declare God’s wisdom, a mystery that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began The Wisdom of God 7No, we declare God’s wisdom, a mystery that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began 23but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. The Word = Logos is the name of Jesus Reason Why John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The Jews understood that the Logos, the Word of God, was God revealing Himself, God creating, God acting, God alive in His creation Targum Aramaic translation of the Hebrew Bible. (Yahweh) Aramaic term that means “the word.” It’s the word memra. Greek Septuagint memra “the word.” translation logos in Greek for example, in Genesis 15: “After this, the word [logos] of the Lord came to Abram in a vision.” Psalm 33, verse 6: “By the word [by the logos] of the Lord were the heavens made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth.” Lord were the heavens made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth.” -The apostle John is the only New Testament author to call Jesus “the Word.” He does so in the Gospel of John, and in his first Epistle of John, and also, as we’ll see, in the book of Revelation. -When he talks about the “Word,” that’s the Greek word logos. So when you see the “Word,” that’s the logos. John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John said 4 things about the Word Logos His Eternity 2. His Personality 3. His Deity 4. His Humanity John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 Problems Too high a view of John 2. Too low a view of Jesus More divine than human? More human than divine? Partly human, partly divine? Fully human, fully divine! The Incarnation of the Word of Life 1 John 1 (NIV) 1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. 2The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. 3We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. THE WORD I AM  (Yahweh) = LORD = “the word.” It’s the word memra= logos in Greek Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, John infused this word with a richer, fuller meaning-- not an impersonal force but a person, God made flesh. Jesus was God’s mirror, God’s way of making Himself known to His creation. The definition of a word John 1:18,No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father's side [Jesus, the Logos/Word of God], he has made him known. 2 Corinthians 4:6 For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," [that God who spoke in Genesis 1] has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God [how?] in the face of Jesus Christ [the Logos, the Word].
