In this lecture, Don Carson explores the profound theological themes in the prologue of John's Gospel (John 1:1–18), emphasizing the significance of the Word (Logos) as both the inner thought of God and the outward expression of his self-disclosure. Carson highlights the dual roles of the Word as light and life, and he contrasts the law given through Moses with the grace received through Jesus Christ. He teaches the following:The contextual significance of the Word (Logos)How John's prologue is connected to Genesis 1The Word is the light of men and the life that prepares them for eternityWitness as a theme in John's GospelHow John the Baptist's role as witness sets the stage for the IncarnationHow the Word confronts and divides humanityThe significance of Jesus as the ultimate revelation of God

In this lesson, we delve into the profound significance of John 1:14, a verse that stands at the heart of Christian belief. "The Word (Logos) became flesh (Sarx) and dwelt (tabernacled) among us." But what does this truly mean? How can the eternal Logos, the Word of God, take on the form of temporary flesh? Join us as we explore this paradox and consider what John means by using the Greek term ‘Sarx' for flesh. What are the implications of this statement? Finally, we'll uncover the rich imagery of the Tabernacle from the book of Exodus, understanding how John portrays God's presence as now dwelling—'tabernacling'—among us in the person of Jesus of Nazareth. This exploration not only deepens our understanding of scripture but also enriches our faith journey. Join us in this insightful study of one of Christianity's most essential truths. -------------------------------------- www.figtreeteaching.com Support Fig Tree Ministries: https://donorbox.org/support-figtree-ministries Fig Tree Amazon Portal: https://amzn.to/3USMelI Class Handout: https://www.figtreeteaching.com/blog/the-word-became-flesh YouTube: https://youtu.be/rEhyI1X5RiQ Hebrew Word for 'Good News' - Basar - https://youtu.be/yjamiXfkkow Exodus Playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLCaBz_NhYH3F424Ak91PV9hamPetSpEpU Jesus Birthday during the Feast of Tabernacles? https://youtu.be/QQxbIAvHj38 References: Jewish Annotated New Testament: https://amzn.to/46lwX0J John A. Some Biblical Unitarians (believers in the One God, the Father), don't see the man Jesus in the first verses of John's Gospel. Instead, they understand the Word/Logos” as an abstract plan, design, promise or wisdom that is only personified (described as if it were a person).      Trinitarian “diety-of-Christ” and “Arian” believers likewise don't see the human person, the human being Jesus of Nazareth in the first verses of John's Gospel. They see only a “divine being/person who became flesh” – but this podcast is not directed toward them. They have bigger problems.   This podcast should challenge believers in One God, the Father, to see that the “personified plan, purpose, wisdom” interpretation of John's Prologue falls short.    I asked fourteen One God, the Father believers who have lectured or written about their abstract personification interpretation of John's Prologue, this question:   “At what place in John 1 do you first see the man Christ Jesus of Nazareth or his ministry, either metaphorically or literally, being the subject?“   Their answers should be enlightening.   Other resources mentioned in this podcast: Perry, Andrew. GOSPELS 7 IN THE BEGINNING WAS THE WORD  We started the Gospel series where all four Gospels gave of the account of the beginning of the ministry of Jesus, being baptised by John the Baptist. Some of John the Baptist's disciples began to follow Jesus, and after his forty days of temptation in the wilderness he regathered some of these disciples by the sea of Galilee and they followed him into greater Galilee where he chose the twelve Apostles and performed many miracles and healings before returning to his hometown in Nazareth.  But we now need to go back to the first section of Chapter one of John's Gospel and fill a gap which contains something that is unique to John's Gospel. It is the magnificent account of the creation of all things in the Universe through Jesus the Word – Logos – of God. Jesus as the Logos is the eternal creative articulation of the will of the Father, and the Holy Spirit is the eternal supernatural activity that acts upon that creative Word of Jesus in every situation. That is what happens for us as we receive the word of faith that comes into our lives when Jesus speaks to us concerning the will of the Father - and we see the powerful work of the holy Spirit bringing into being the fulfillment of that Word for our life and our situation. That is our prayer life. John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word (Logos – the creative life and design and purpose  giving utterance of Jesus), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2. He (Jesus) was in the beginning with God. 3. Everything was made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. Artificial Intelligence, without any sketch or drawing plan but simply by writing a descriptive string of imaginative mere human words into a computer program can generate a video animation of weird hybrid creatures that move, like a rabbit with the scaly tailed end of an echidna, and fish that walk and talk – and it looks real. It is an illusion that is hailed as a creative wonder. But God through the one creative Logos Word of Jesus has created orchids that look like laughing monkeys, flowers that look and move like dancing fairies, and insects whose magnified faces contain an exact image of a rabbit's head, and the African Grey Parrot can have a vocabulary of 2000 words. There are many millions of these works of art in God's creation gallery from microscopic ballerina marine creatures at the bottom of the ocean to trillions of galaxies in the Universe. So people can say words and make things appear real and alive but they cannot create life. Illusion is not life, and it is not truth – more about that later. Vs4. In Him (Jesus) was life and that life was the light (phos) of Mankind.  The word used for life in that verse is zoe, which means the fulness of essential and spiritual life - as opposed to bios – which speaks of lower life forms. Jesus possesses the zoe life in its fullest and most divine sense and Jesus became the source and embodiment of eternal life for humanity. Jesus is also the illumination of the truth and the revelation of that life. He is the way, the truth and the life. He show us the way to understand and live in God's will, and through his light and truth humanity can experience lifegiving salvation of the soul.  Vs5. And that light shines into the darkness, and the darkness cannot overcome it (katalambano – hold it down, supress it, enclose it) That verse tells us that the illumination of that truth about knowing God and knowing his will is able to bring that revelation into the darkness and obscurity and delusion of the world, and the darkness of the world cannot overcome or overwhelm it. If darkness tries to enclose or surround light it is overpowered by light. And in the same way, if we are full of the light and truth of Jesus in our minds and hearts of faith, the delusional and manipulative words of darkness that try to penetrate the light of our truth will dissipate and come to nothing. They are unable to move us from our conviction of the truth that the Holy Spirit reveals to us about Jesus and the Father. The Apostle Paul said ‘For God, who Let light shine out of darkness, made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God's glory displayed in the face of Jesus Christ. (2Corinthians 4:6)                                                                                                                                                                                        John goes on to write in the next verse (vs 6) that John the Baptist said he himself was not the light but he was sent to bear witness to that light which was Jesus, so that everyone (pas) - all of humanity - might believe through Jesus. John says (vs 9) ‘that Light was the true Light which gives light (the revelation of God's zoe life) to every man that comes into the world' (every human being that arrives on the planet).  John then writes (vs 10) that Jesus who made the world came into the world, to his own, but the world did not know him or receive him. John writes that Jesus would give power and freedom and liberty to those who did receive him and they would grow into mature sons and daughters of God the Father. He said that those people who received him and believed in him would be born from above from God, not just from human reproduction.  Being born of God is one thing but growing up is another thing, growing in the power of The Spirit into grown up sons and daughters on a journey of volunteering to do what pleases the Father. John writes (vs 14) that the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, (flesh =sarx – humanity that can choose to go it alone) and we beheld His glory, the glory of the only begotten (monogenes – the One begotten Son) of the Father, full of grace and truth.  Jesus was the only human being who became ‘flesh' (‘humanity that can choose to go it alone)' that was born directly from the Spirit seed of the Father (monogenes – the One begotten Son) – born from above and into the earth through his earthly mother Mary. We are not born from above directly as Jesus the only begotten Son was from the Father. We were born from above through the spiritual seed of Jesus himself, the Logos, ‘truly God and truly Man'. Jesus was always truly God and became truly human – we were always truly human and became partakers of the Divine nature (2Peter 1:4). The bible says that we have been born again (anagenna??- born anew from above), not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the Word of God (Logos – Jesus) which lives and abides forever (1Peter 1:23).  Jesus prophesied and explained this new birth to a man called Nicodemus, whom Jesus referred to as the Teacher of the Jews and who confessed that Jesus could not have done the things that he did unless he was the Christ, and Jesus answered him and said "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again (gennao anothen – born from above), he cannot see the kingdom of God." John 3:3) This final verse (vs 14) that we have been discussing, about Jesus the Logos becoming flesh and dwelling among us caused a split between Christianity and both the religious Jews and the educated Greeks when the Apostle John wrote it. Religious Jews believed that the Word of God always was and still is the Torah of the words of the Law through Moses, and it was blasphemy to say the word had become a Person, so they rejected John's Word Logos for that reason. It's all about words. The Greeks believed that Logos was a word that described the philosophical concept of the designing and sustaining and ordering principle of the Universe – it could not possibly be a Person! so they rejected John's Word Logos for that reason.  But Christians believe that Logos is a Person, Jesus, the Logos, who is the articulation of the Father's will in all situations. The Bible says that Jesus the Logos upholds all thing in the Universe by the word of his power (Hebrews 1:3) – that is what is real and what is real will last. The world imposes a superficial reality on many aspects of social and moral and scientific truth by taking words and giving them new meanings that suit its own ideologies. That turns non truth into truth and non-virtue into virtue and even non science into science, and that is an exercise of darkness trying to overcome light. But when darkness tries to enclose light, the darkness has to finally break up and disappear. And when Logos light and truth penetrate darkness the darkness also finally breaks up and disappears. God has created humanity in his own image and does not want humanity to live in bondage to darkness. God looked upon a world in bondage to darkness in the days of Noah, and he looked upon Abraham and Lot in the days of Sodom and Gomorrah, and he looked upon the earth in the days of Pharaoh and Moses where his people had been enslaved in bondage to darkness and he brought deliverance through people of faith who heard his word of salvation.  As we allow the incorruptible seed of the Logos of Jesus to grow within us we can confidently pray and believe John's word which says ‘that Light was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world' and ‘that light shines into the darkness, and the darkness cannot overcome it' That was promised in the beginning, and I believe that promise is ready to start finding its fulfillment once more. Let us nurture that Logos seed of life and light and truth, and let us water it by our faith and love and let us bear witness to it by our lives, and let us offer it to those in our world. We can know and believe that what is real and lasting will overcome what is ready to pass away.

Cub Kuker Supernatural Podcast EP366 1. Definition of Logos: In Greek philosophy, "Logos" refers to the principle of order and knowledge. In the context of the Bible, particularly in the New Testament, Logos is used to describe the divine Word or reason that underlies and sustains the universe. 2. John 1:1-14 - The Incarnation: The most significant reference to Logos in the Bible is found in the opening verses of the Gospel of John. "In the beginning was the Word (Logos), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." This passage emphasizes the divine nature of Jesus Christ as the incarnate Logos. 3. Colossians 1:15-17 - Christ as the Image of God: Paul's letter to the Colossians also highlights the concept of Logos, describing Christ as the image of the invisible God and the one through whom all things were created, both in heaven and on earth. 4. Hebrews 4:12 - The Living and Active Word: While not using the term "Logos" explicitly, Hebrews 4:12 describes the Word of God as living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit. 5. Revelation 19:13 - The Name of Christ: In the book of Revelation, Logos is referenced symbolically, portraying Christ as the rider on a white horse with the name "Word of God" written on his robe, emphasizing the authority and power of Christ. 6. 1 John 1:1-4 - Witnessing the Word of Life: The first epistle of John speaks of the Word of Life, emphasizing the eyewitness accounts of the apostles regarding the incarnate Logos, whom they have seen, heard, and touched. 7. Psalm 33:6 - Logos in the Old Testament: Though the term Logos is primarily associated with the New Testament, the concept of the divine Word can also be traced back to the Old Testament, with Psalm 33:6 declaring, "By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth, all their host." Reflecting on John 1: The Genesis of the WordThe opening chapter of the Gospel according to John holds a distinctive place in the theological and literary landscape of the New Testament. Unlike the synoptic gospels, John begins not with a genealogy or the nativity narrative, but with a profound theological meditation on the eternal Word (Logos), presenting Jesus Christ not just as a historical figure, but as the timeless embodiment of divine wisdom and creative power. Let's delve deeper into the nuanced profundities of John 1. In the Beginning was the WordJohn 1 famously starts with the words "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." These initial verses are more than a mere introduction; they offer a lens through which we are invited to perceive the entire narrative of Jesus' life and ministry. Establishing Jesus as the preexistent Word, connects him to the divine act of creation, emphasizing his divinity and integral role in the creation of the world. The Life and the LightIn the subsequent passages, John further introduces Jesus as the "life" and the "light" of humankind — a light that shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. This powerful imagery not only establishes Jesus as the beacon of hope and the source of life but also assures us of his indomitable spirit that remains undefeatable, even in the face of profound darkness. This theme of light permeates through the Johannine text, offering a symbol of guidance, truth, and revelation. The Word Became FleshThe concept of the incarnation is at the heart of John 1:14, where “the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.” It marks the moment where the eternal and divine intersected with the temporal and human. This verse encapsulates the Christian understanding of God's self-revelation in Jesus, who embodies grace and truth, offering a new way to understand God - not just as an abstract entity, but as a being who shares in the human experience, with all its joys and sufferings. The Witness of John the BaptistJohn the Baptist's testimony introduces a key theme of witnessing in the gospel. His role is to bear witness to the light, preparing the way for Jesus' ministry. John the Baptist's humility and recognition of Jesus' superiority offer a lesson in discerning and acknowledging the divine presence in our midst. The Calling of the First DisciplesTowards the end of the chapter, we witness the calling of the first disciples, initiated by the curious inquiry, “Rabbi, where are you staying?” The narrative thus invites every reader to embark on a personal journey of discovery and to stay with Jesus, cultivating a deep, abiding relationship with the divine through an open-hearted, earnest seeking of the truth. Conclusion John 1 serves as a deep well of theological insights and promises. Its poetic prose and profound theology offer a rich ground for reflection, inviting us to contemplate the mysteries of existence, the intertwining of the divine and the human, and the ever-present light that guides our paths. Through the lens of John 1, we are guided to see Jesus not just as a teacher or prophet, but as the incarnate Word, the source of life, and the light of all humanity — a powerful beginning to a gospel replete with depths of wisdom and heights of divine revelations. The Trinity is a mystery, and the word Trinity is not found in the Bible – the Bible has inferences to the Word Trinity and each of its component persons without naming the overarching word “Trinity”. However, the authority of speaking about the Trinity comes from the Bible. During the first few centuries of the Church, Christians wrestled with how to describe and communicate God in writings and teachings. These early Christians, in their study of the Scriptures, saw that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit were all Devine; however, they knew that God was one. Therefore, these early Christians concluded that the Scriptures taught that there was only one God; but that the Father is God, the Son is God, and that the Holy Spirit is God – what we now call the Trinity. Today, we will look at the second person of the Trinity – Jesus. Jesus is the rock upon which Christianity is built. Typically, we refer to “Jesus Christ”; however, “Christ “is not Jesus last name. “Christ” is a title that means Messiah. Jesus, the second person of the Trinity, is viewed from three perspectives: 1) the pre-incarnate Christ; the incarnate Christ (God man); and the post-incarnate Christ. In John 1:1-5, the Apostle John tells us that the pre-incarnate Christ was the Word (Logos) and in the beginning. Also, the pre-incarnate Christ was a person, but He was: with God, a deity (God), and a participant in the Creation. Also, the pre-incarnate Christ, in the Old Testament, is referred to as “The Angel of the Lord” (Exodus 3:1-18). Whenever The Angel of the Lord appears in the Old Testament, God ends up being referenced as the person speaking. In John 8:58, Jesus removes all doubt that He was God, The Angel of the Lord, speaking to Abraham in Exodus 3: “Jesus said to them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.'". In John 1:14, the Apostle John identifies the God-man Jesus, the incarnate Christ, as God: “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.". Jesus was the person of God's Son and He was Devine. In the year 325, leaders from all over the Church met in Nicaea to debate and understand who Jesus was. These Church leaders came out of this meeting saying that Jesus was co-equal and co-eternal with God the Father. In the Incarnation, Jesus remained God; but, also, Jesus became fully a sinless human – Son of Man and Son of God. The incarnate Christ was crucified, and He was resurrected; and He is living today as the post-incarnate Christ. As the post-incarnate Christ, Jesus is the reigning and redeeming Christ. Also, we are told that the post-incarnate Christ will return. Therefore, Jesus is the visible expression of the invisible God. It is because of Jesus, the second person of the Trinity, that we are able to have access to the first person of the Trinity – God the Father. God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit are inseparable because they are one God together in the Trinity. We are God's children; but God, our Father, has no grandchildren. Jesus tells us in John 14:6-7: “Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.'". The understanding of the Godhead and the Trinity are a gift to us through our Salvation brought to us by Jesus.   TODAY'S PRAYER: Keeping the Sabbath, Lord, will require a lot of changes in the way I am living life. Teach me, Lord, how to take the next step with this in a way that fits my unique personality and situation. The Gospel of John 1-2 is seen as a profound theological reflection on the nature of Jesus and his relationship to God. The central idea of these chapters is that Jesus is the Word (Logos) of God, a term that has rich philosophical and theological connotations in the ancient world. The Word is not only the source of all creation, but also the source of light and life, which are essential elements of the divine presence in the world. We hear about the relationship between John the Baptist and Jesus, with John serving as a witness to the coming of the Messiah. The significance of John's testimony is that he serves as a bridge between the Old Testament and the New Testament, connecting the two and providing a clear witness to Jesus as the fulfillment of God's promise to his people. Jesus was made flesh, that is, he became a human being and dwelt among people. Despite the rejection of Jesus by some people, those who receive him are given the power to become children of God. This is a powerful declaration of the universality of salvation and the invitation that is extended to all people to have a personal relationship with Jesus.

By wisdom the Lord laid the earth's foundations, by understanding he set the heavens in place. . . . — Proverbs 3:19 Setting a foundation for anything can be a difficult and sometimes complicated task. Whether it's constructing a house, engineering a bridge, laying down pavement for a new road, or installing a retaining wall, the foundation is essential to whatever is being made. Proverbs tells us that the Lord God, our Creator, founded the heavens and the earth by wisdom and understanding. What exactly is the writer saying here? The New Testament gives us some clarity on this. Now that Jesus has come, the mysteries of God have been revealed. As the apostle Paul puts it in Colossians 1:16, “In him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth . . . all things have been created through him and for him.” The apostle John also notes that “in the beginning was the Word [Logos]” and that “through him all things were made.” What's more, “the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us,” and he is “the Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:1-3, 14). So Christ himself is our source of heavenly wisdom, of knowledge and understanding from God. He is the foundation and the means by which we can grow. This means that if we are to pursue wisdom, we will find it in Jesus and no one else. Wise and awesome God, you created the world and each one of us; and, Lord Jesus, all things are created through you. Help us to find wisdom and understanding in you. Amen.

God sends the Angel Gabriel with a surprise announcement for an elderly couple. God's idea of preparing the way of the Lord looks nothing like what Herod might imagine. Our discussion focuses on John 1 and the idea of Jesus as the Word (“Logos”-- a word heavily associated with reason in the Hellenistic culture). "What else is Christ but the Sound of God." (Acts of John) Today, research into the inner Sound mysticism of the Judeo-Christian and Gnostic traditions. Before the Sufi mystics of Islam, in ancient times there were Gnostics: Jewish, Hermetic, and Christian mystics who described hearing Heavenly Sound or Divine Music, and seeing mystic visions of Light and the heavens while in deep states of contemplative meditation.    The Sound of God is within everyone -- this Holy Stream of Sound -- is within every living being. This is why those given to exploring the Kingdoms of Inner Space through meditation, be they from the East or the West, have discovered this Reality playing within themselves.    "The soul-explorer is not alone, for there are those who have traveled the highways of the inner cosmos; far more than one may at first realize." (George Arnsby Jones)   "I heard a noise like wind blowing in my ears and knew it for the Sound of the Holy Spirit which became like the voice of a dove. When the Lord spoke to me I lost all sense of time. I did not know if he was with me five or six hours or only one. It was so holy and full of grace that I felt as if I had been in heaven." (Margery Kempe, The Mirror of Love)   "If you should in this world bring many thousand sorts of musical instruments together, and all should be tuned in the best manner most artificially, and the most skillful masters of music should play on them in concert together, all would be no more than the howlings and barkings of dogs in comparison of the Divine Music, which rises through the Divine Sound and tunes from Eternity to Eternity."  (Jacob Boehme, German Mystic)   "In the beginning was the Logos (the Word), the Logos was with God and the Logos was God." Fundamentals #21 The podcast draws from the three pages, “Gospel Truths”, in the appendix of Primitive Christianity Revived by William Penn. The first four (of thirteen) sections are read with comments. Section 1The “Scriptures of Truth”: an early Quaker name for the Bible. God exists, and is a “rewarder of all that fear [have reverential awe of] Him.” There are eternal rewards of happiness for all who obey and follow Him. Those who do not fear Him, shall be “turned into Hell” [Hades, Hebrew: Sheol, the place of the dead]. There are three kinds of fire in the New Testament: fire as light, purifying fire that separates the melted metal from the dross, and fire that obliterates completely so that essentially nothing is left. The last is frequently the word used to describe “hellfire”.  Section 2Trinity 1 John 5:7 -  In the earlier King James Version (KJV) “the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost” are mentioned. However, since that first KJV, modern biblical scholarship has discovered that the earliest and most reliable manuscripts do not contain this verse. It is an addition from many centuries later. The Trinity was not declared a "doctrine" until the Council of Nicea (325 A.D.). Friends are not trinitarian (since the Holy Scriptures do not use the term), but do believe in the oneness of God as divine Father, divine Word (Logos) and divine Holy Spirit. Section 3 Jesus, was the Word (Logos) of God, fully divine, full of grace and truth. The fullness of God was in Him as a human being.“The only begotten of the Father” (Gk: monogenēs - one of  a kind, unique).  Jesus' sacrifice as a human being on the cross was an act of complete obedience to God the Father. Salvation in the Bible is much deeper and broader than commonly understood by some today. It involves being saved/rescued/healed from the propensity, the proclivity, the inclination to sin/toward sinning. Romans 12:1,2.Section 4JustificationThe true meaning of justification has become very clouded and made very complex by the accretions over the centuries, and is understood very differently today than in the early church.  One is only made righteous (Greek: upright) in the sight of God through the work of the Light of Christ in us. Nothing one can do on one's own can make oneself righteous in God's eyes. If we walk in the Light as He is the Light, His precious blood cleanses us from all sin (and the guilt of sin). We must receive and obey the holy illumination of Christ. . .  with a “sincere repentance and amendment [continual transformation] of life”. We can be made righteous, upright, and walk according to the Holy Spirit in this life. Jesus is our examplar. The word “Christ" is actually a title given to Jesus: — Jesus, the Christ, meaning Jesus, the Anointed one. (Christos: the anointed one, anointed with the Holy Spirit), the Messiah. The seed of Christ within us must be tended, watered, and fertilized for us to become truly Christlike, truly Christian.  Greek:Logos - utterance, expression, God's expressing Himself. Monogenēs adj. : one of a kind; uniqueDikaiōsis (Latin: justificatio): being made righteous, just, upright [in God's eyes]dikaios adj. : righteous, just, upright Hilasmos: propitiation, the means by which sins are forgiven.Christos: anointed (one), Messiah, Christklēronomeō v. -  inheritThe quote in our introduction is From George Fox's Journal.  It can be found in the first chapter of that book. We welcome feedback on any of our podcasts.   Email us at oymconservative@gmail.com.

Our Awesome God -- Part 3: Trinity; Jesus, the Christ MESSAGE SUMMARY: We pray and sing to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit – the Trinity: one God and yet three persons in the one God. All analogies fall shot in explaining an incomprehensible God and the Trinity. Message from 05/12/2021 by Chris ZeelieChris shares some truths from the word about God's perfect love and plan for us. In the New Testament, the phrase "Word (Logos) of God," found in John 1:1 and elsewhere, shows God's desire and ability to "speak" to the human. The Christian expression of this communication is evidenced in the Christ, who is the "Word become flesh." In these three biblical words, Christianity points to the possibility of union between the human and the divine, or the personal and the absolute. God's logos, which the Christ represents, acts as a bridge between the human's inner spiritual needs and the answer proclaimed by the Christian message.

Q&A Kindling Questions 8: How does the idea of Gen 1:1, Elohim being one God, match with John 1:1

Todays question Sydekie during one of his bible studies and he asked: How does the idea of Elohim one God match with John 1:1 Bereshith bara Elohim eth hashmayim v'eth ha'aretz. In the beginning "God" created the heavens and the earth En arche en ho Logos, kai ho Logos en pros ton Theon, Kai Theos en ho Logos. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and God was the Word. Elohim (God, gods, divine ones, rulers) is a plural of eloah, which translates as “God”. And in context with the Creator in Gen 1:1, it has been assumed the ancient Israelites used this plural title with a singular verb, because of God's majesty. So though they believe there is one God, He is not just The God, but He is God of the God's. So the plurality was to represent His majesty. We see in many cultures this practice still happening today. So when we see this title of God, represented as a singular, even though grammatically its a plural, one must begin to question how to interpret John 1:1. For in John 1:1, we can distinctly see two separate beings, the Logos (a word (as embodying an idea), a statement, a speech), and the Theos (God, a god). What is fascinating is that theos is a title itself, not a name, which is the same for the term elohim. Elohim and Theos are titles for a specific being, or person, and in the context of these two verses, Gen 1:1 & John 1:1, it is the title of the one who is present in the beginning, at our first cause. When we can distinguish the fact that these are titles, then one can see a little more in the text. Genesis 1:1 is a statement of what is our first cause, and by whom did it happen. And who is “the Creator” in Genesis 1:1, something that goes by the title of God (Elohim). In John 1:1 we see there was another being, named "The Word (Logos)", present at the first cause, and this being was not only present at the first cause, but they were present with the one who has the title of God. And to add more depth to it, the Word is also known to be one with God, and is God Himself. Therefore, what we can see is Genesis 1:1 was a sum of the entire creation, being attributed to the one that bears the title God. And by the time we get to John 1:1, John begins to deepen our understanding of what God is, which is something that consist of more than one being, yet they are all in unison. Short little note: Genesis 2:4 is the first time we see God being called by a name, YHWH; and this was expressing the relationship between God the Creator and man. They were to be friends, and know each others names. But by the time of the New Testament era,we are told of another who has the saving power of YHWH, because we see in Acts 4:12, “there is no other name by which man can be saved”, referring to Yeshua, the Logos. And within the Scriptures we see Yeshua allude Himself to being the "I Am" of old (John 8:58), therefore making himself equal with YHWH, God the Father. But Philippians 2:5-11, let us know that Yeshua was equal with the Father, but laid aside His divinity to carry out His earthly ministry. And Rev 1:8 & 22:13, allows us to see that Yeshua is also the one "who was, is, and yet to be", which is another title that belongs to Elohim. How does the idea of Elohim one God match with John 1:1 Fairly easy, when you recognize that John 1:1 is getting deeper into understanding what constitutes the term and personhood of God. But in this instance, John begins to focus more on one person of the God head, rather than another. P.S. The Idea of God being a singular one, comes a little later in time, which we can examine another day. As well as, if it weren't for Yeshua, we would have never learned about the ministry of the third person in the Godhead, which is the Ruach Ha Qodesh, the Holy Spirit, but that's another conversation

THE HIDDEN SEED OF LOGOS  1Peter 1:23 since you have been born again, not of corruptible seed but of incorruptible seed, through the living and abiding (logos) of God;  Our New Creation lives are the expression of the logos seed of life implanted within us through the death and resurrection of Jesus, the logos Word of God. God is always ‘bringing us into being’ of that New Creation life and our faith causes us to always be ‘coming into being’ of that life. We attend to that hidden seed of spiritual life within. LOGOS THE BIG IDEA The Logos was the Word that spoke creation into being, and that designed and ordered everything in the Universe. John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word (Logos), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. All things were made through Him.  As a Pharisee, Paul used to have what he thought was the best and biggest idea for his life living under God’s Law, but then he was walloped by the greatest idea that had ever existed – the Logos, in the form of Jesus, The Word. Before Paul received a revelation from Jesus on the road to Damascus he was an enemy of Christianity. He had a very stable and strongly approved religion where everybody in his entire personal world validated him. When he was converted he was perceived as an enemy of Judaism by those of the Jewish religion even though they were not seen as enemies by him, and his whole personal world turned upside down. Paul met the logos, Jesus, born from above, who joined God to humanity for all time.  John 1:1 And the Word became flesh and lived amongst us. Jesus Christ, the Logos now sustains and upholds all of creation with that Word of power. (Hebrews 1:3). It is hard to grasp the wonder of this magnificent creative power that is able to order and reorder our whole life as we consciously cooperate with God in that process of transformation. Jesus the Logos Word unfolds to us who God is through the Holy Spirit, and as we get to know who God is, he gets to show us who we are. THE HISTORY OF THE WORD LOGOS The Word Logos had been around in Greek culture and philosophy for hundreds of years before Jesus was born. Logos was the one overarching thought in ancient Greek philosophy that expressed the wonder and design of an ordered Universe. When John wrote that Jesus was the Logos that created the world as God and that he became a human being that had come to live among us, it gave to everyone who read those words with a responsive faith, a profound understanding of who Jesus really was, as God joining himself to his own creation in us. It was the Greek belief that Logos is some form of intentional idea or principle that can be seen everywhere; it makes up the earth, trees and even us as humans, and logos does not just give everything form; it also gives it order. In the Greek mind, this meant that logos determines who is who and who is placed where, because logos contains the master plan for all things, and constitutes the ideal way to order them.  So as Logos had become the big Idea for the Greek culture and indeed for much of the then known world, we now see that God had prepared that then known world with this word logos to describe the person of Jesus – In the beginning was the Logos…and the Logos was God…and the Logos became a human being.  Logos was the big idea and design plan of God’s own purpose and intention for humanity. When Paul was spoken to by the Logos, Jesus, that totally re-ordered his belief system and his personal world and his whole life. He began to live each day alongside Jesus as his disciple consciously allowing the Holy Spirit to bring the DNA of the implanted logos seed into the unfolding of his life’s destiny and purpose. THE MORAL CONSCIENCE AND THE LOGOS The apostle Peter’s tradition gave him a moral conscience of what was right and wrong according to the Jewish religion. Peter had already lived alongside Jesus, the Logos, the Word made flesh, for over three years as his disciple, and he knew him and loved him as a friend, but it took Peter a long time to let go of his former belief system of living under the Law of Judaism that he grew up with.  His Jewish tradition gave him a moral conscience of the letter of the Law, but it was no longer fully aligned with what the Holy Spirit was saying according to the Logos, or Word of truth in the spirit.  New Testament Scriptures point out the difference between two different types of conscience (Hebrews 9:14, 10:22,6:22). These Scriptures show us that there is the natural moral conscience and there is the Spiritual conscience which is aligned with the mind and heart of Jesus the Logos.  Hebrews 9:14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from bondage to the morality of human tradition (dead works) into life-giving service the living God. All of humanity has been given a natural conscience by God, to discern the difference between right and wrong. Adam and Eve had that conscience before they disobeyed God because they were told that it was wrong to eat of the tree of knowledge. That is why they felt guilt and shame and covered their shame with fig leaves and hid from God. Humanity has been doing that ever since, hiding from God and covering their shame.  Our personal moral conscience about what is right and wrong has been formed broadly by our culture or religion and it guides our values and our decisions. This means that our natural or personal conscience can only inform us of the right and wrong of our culture or tradition, and in many areas we can be calling right wrong and calling wrong right. God once showed Peter a vision of all kinds of animals that were forbidden for Jews to eat and he then told Peter to eat those animals as food.  Peter refused to eat what he believed to be unclean food, alright maybe for gentiles but not fit for Jews, and so Peter told God that he was wrong! He said ‘Not so Lord’.  It is actually a contradiction to say ‘not so’ and ‘Lord’ in the same statement. God then had to say to Peter ‘do not call unclean what I have cleansed’. God was telling Peter that he was inviting all of humanity, and their food, into the Kingdom of God alongside his people Israel as his children and as brothers and sisters to his Son Jesus. A natural conscience of human tradition is called in the Bible an evil or a harmful (poneros) conscience (Hebrews 10:22).  Peter was judging all of humanity outside of Judaism as being unclean and not worthy or eat with or to even enter into their house. That judgment was now a morally harmful and unloving act in the eyes of God, who then told Peter to go into the house of a gentile (Cornelius) and preach the Gospel of Jesus to him.  Peter had to have his harmful conscience gradually transformed by the work of the Holy Spirit who brings our conscience into line with God’s heart of Logos truth and love.  Jesus had told his disciples that when he went to be with his Father he would send the Holy Spirit to convict the world of sin. That means all of humanity after Jesus has the Holy Spirit actively working upon them in their spirit, where the conscience resides, bringing an awareness of the love and forgiveness of God for their sins and turning their hearts (repentance) toward God and away from darkness (like a plant turns towards the sunshine). When we respond to this movement of the Spirit and acknowledge what Jesus has done for us we then actively receive the Holy Spirit so that it is now an abiding of our spirit with the Holy Spirit in a pathway forward of our transformation from a natural life to a spiritual life in Christ. Paul was literally exploded out of his natural and religious moral conscience under the Law. He had been a hostile enemy of Jesus until he met him on the road to Damascus.  Paul had been hunting down Jewish Christians and putting them in jail and sentencing them to death. He had actually just been part of the stoning to death of the martyr Stephen before he set off on the road to Damascus. The last thing that Stephen said to the Jewish elders and Pharisees before he died was ‘You are always resisting the Holy Spirit as your fathers did, you obstinate and hard hearted murderers of those who were sent to proclaim the coming of the Messiah’ (Acts 7:51). Those words were still ringing in Paul’s ears when he was confronted by Jesus on that road that day, and when he was spoken to by Jesus Logos on that road, he had already been getting pricked in his conscience and angrily kicking against those promptings of Holy Spirit Jesus knew what was happening in Paul’s conscience and he said to him ‘It is hard for you to kick against the pricks’ (Acts 9:5). Paul then asked Jesus ‘What must I do Lord?’ Paul’s conscience was then brought into line with Logos truth and he began to live not as a hostile enemy but as a close friend of Jesus.  All of humanity have a corruptible human seed of life from the DNA of our parents, and since Jesus we now have the incorruptible seed of life from the spiritual DNA of God implanted by Jesus, the Logos, through the Holy Spirit.  We are encouraged to humbly reach in our hearts and minds and embrace the Logos.  James 1.21 Receive with meekness the implanted (emphytos) Logos that is able to save (restore and reorder) your soul.  ONLY BY FAITH IS THAT IMPLANTED SEED GERMINTATED INTO GROWTH AND FRUIT BEARING Satan has planted into the minds all of humanity the seed of the Lie that we are all alienated from the life of God in Adam.  God has planted the seed of oneness with himself into the life of all humanity in Jesus. (Romans 5:18)  We have both those seeds within us, the natural from Adam and the spiritual from Jesus. We choose which one to cultivate and live from. The natural seed tends towards disorder and the alienation in our minds from the life of God and the spiritual seed (Logos) tends towards order and oneness with God and the renewing of our minds. A seed brings something into being. which one will we invest in? The natural seed is about self and what things I want for myself. The Logos seed is about working together with God to release to others the goodness of God that we have received. The Jesus Word of Logos is our blueprint that will live in us and bring understanding, truth and wisdom into any and every situation we face. As we still our hearts and minds and give attention to that one big Idea of the life giving and life changing seed of life within us Holy Spirit will inspire in us acts of virtue and courage, feelings of joy and peace, and God’s love deep within our hearts. It is an odd wonder that the Christmas event of the birth of Jesus, the ‘Word made flesh’ is celebrated around the world every year – even by people who do not understand or believe in the cosmic truth it contains. That is just one more welcome for Jesus to be  believed in by ALL of humanity because it is for ALL humanity, but our lives of love and grace to others is the greatest welcome for so many who are desperately waiting for something better to happen in their lives. So let us gratefully receive that seed of life and invest in that seed and cultivate it so that it grows and bears the fruit of the blessing of God’s love and care that will go out and be that blessing for all those in our world in Jesus name Amen.

Scripture Reading: John 20:1-18 Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him. . . .” John 20:15 Can you think of a time when you were struggling and you simply needed to know some basic information about what was happening? At the empty tomb, Mary was upset and confused, and she just needed to know where Jesus was. When “she turned around and saw Jesus standing there,” she didn’t realize it was him. She thought he was the gardener. Gardeners or caretakers were probably known to be on-site in a graveyard like that one. I wonder, too, if perhaps John saw something important in this detail and included it as a reminder that Jesus the Savior is also the Creator of the world. The opening lines of the gospel of John talk about creation and how Jesus, the Word (Logos), was actively involved. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made” (John 1:1-3; see Genesis 1:1-3). And near the end of this gospel account John includes this detail about Jesus as the gardener in the graveyard—perhaps to show that Jesus, who was with God at the beginning of creation, is now alive again and re-creating the world. Jesus has been raised from the dead and is doing a new thing, gently tending to each living creature, bringing about renewal and healing for the entire creation. When Jesus spoke Mary’s name, she knew exactly who he was, and she soon went to tell the others, “I have seen the Lord!” Risen Lord and Savior, you call us by name and speak comfort and truth to us. Thank you for re-creating us. In your name, Amen.

The Gospel of John possesses a unique perspective on the life and ministry of Christ. Although the book presents a disparate chronological order to the events in Jesus’ life, the primary difference lies more in substantive material. While composed in an abundantly simplistic manner, the spiritual depths held within the book are inarguable. The author of John clearly describes the purpose in composing the book. “…that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name” (John 20:31).[1] John 1:1-18 offers a fundamental support to the material in John’s Gospel. Approached as a prologue, the first eighteen verses promote Jesus as the Word (Logos in Greek) and as human. Furthermore, because of the underlying purpose of John’s Gospel referenced in 20:31, John seems to call the reader to respond to the light of men both throughout the book and in the prologue. The primary thematic material in John’s Gospel is highlighted in the prologue; through the hidden depth underneath the simple compositional style, this prologue grants readers the opportunity to understand the life of Christ in a deeper and more profound manner. There are a number of key words in John's Gospel but the most important is believe [pisteuo]. John used the verb believe 98 times which is more than all the uses in the Synoptic Gospels combined. In fact if one does a search for the believe (using the root belie*) in the NASB, there are 292 hits in 266 verses. It is astounding that John's Gospel contains almost 1/3 of all the Biblical occurrences of believe (belief, believes). And so it is not surprising that John's purpose statement in Jn 20:31-note emphasizes that those who believe in Jesus will receive life in His Name. Given John's purpose and the predominance of the key word believe, it is not surprising that one often hears the statement (which of course would be difficult to objectively measure) that more souls have believed in Jesus through the reading of the Gospel of John than any other book in the Bible! Perhaps God will clarify this for us when we get to heaven. Here are the Key Words in the Gospel of John (in the NASB 1995 version) - Note that the approximate number of uses of each word (searched so as to find plural forms, etc) is found in the Gospel of John is in parentheses. I have also included John's additional uses in his epistles and in the Revelation for completeness. CHRIST OF THE COSMOSI’ve been sharing what is happening on the ground in society these troubled times and also what is happening regarding the spiritual darkness in the heavens. Now I want to talk about the God of the heavens and the earth, the God of the Bible, Christ of the Cosmos. Colossians 1:15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.16. For through him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn (prototokos) from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. 19. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20. and through him to reconcile to himself all things together whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.21 And you who were once hostile are now being reconciled (re-ordered) into oneness with Him and are made innocent in his eyes if you remain in the faith because of this message which has been proclaimed to all creation.  Colossians 1:15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16. For through him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, Jesus is the Image of the invisible God, the outward manifestation of the unseen nature and essence of God in all love and wisdom and power and beauty. Before Jesus came as a person in that image into the earth, he first of all had to create that earth within a Universe.Jesus is called the Firstborn over all creation. The word for ‘firstborn’ is ‘prototokos’ which means the ‘first time seed bearer’ - the first DNA – The beginning of a new order of being. This means that Uncreated being (Invisible and Unseen Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) introduced created being for the first time (Protos) through Jesus, the Logos – the Seed Word.Created material being began as an explosion of light – let there be light.Everything created by that Word had a destiny, because the Word (Logos) contains within it the design for its perfect completion. This creation is not there yet. 16 … visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities…So Angels were created as beings of spiritual light and then there began a creation of a material Universe Job 38: “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements? Surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? To what were its foundations fastened?Or who laid its cornerstone, When the morning stars sang together, And all the sons of God shouted for joy? Ezek 28:12 You were the perfection of wisdom and beauty. You were in Eden, the garden of God; your clothing was bejeweled with every precious stone--ruby, topaz, diamond, chrysolite, onyx, jasper, sapphire, carbuncle, and emerald--all in beautiful settings of finest gold. They were given to you on the day you were created. I appointed you to be the anointed Guardian Angel. You had access to the holy mountain of God. You walked among the stones of fire."`You were perfect in all you did from the day you were created until that time when wrong was found in you. Your great wealth filled you with internal turmoil, and you sinned. Therefore, I cast you out of the mountain of God like a common sinner. I destroyed you, O Guardian Angel, from the midst of the stones of fire. Your heart was filled with pride 16b all things were created through him and for him. 17. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. The Universe came into being, through Jesus as the divine agent of creation, and for Jesus as the Lord over it, and this Universe was totally contained in Jesus as the domain of his activity. He is the sustainer of the universe and the unifying principle of its life and form, and that apart from his continuous sustaining activity everything would disintegrate (vs.17 above). This was FOR Jesus so that he could fulfil the plan of the Father to have a family of humanity to share his very being for all eternity.Jesus began his journey into this material creation the moment he said ‘let there be light’. He was made manifest, prophetically proclaimed as Messiah, yet symbolically hidden throughout the Old Testament, as the Rock that gave forth living water in the wilderness, the manna, the Lord of Hosts that greeted Joshua etc. But this symbolic manifestation had to be hidden in that age. 1Corinthians 2:7. But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glory. None of the archons of this aeion understood this, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. (See also Luke 24 Emmaus)Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, as One, were not prompted by any need to become more fulfilled. God as Trinity always was and was always fulfilled in all things in Themselves. We can say that The idea of creation was a divine act of an outpouring of their shared love and inclusion. They wanted a family of human beings, spirit soul and body, made in their image and likeness  ‘male and female made He them’. 18. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn (prototokos) from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. 19. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell,  Jesus then became the firstborn from the dead – (prototokos) the first-time seed bearer of a new kind of life and being on the earth – the resurrection and the life). Jesus became the giver of new life, a new creation 1Corinthians 15:45 “The first man Adam became a living soul; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit. To give this life to us he had to die. He died willingly, a sacrifice of love, the ultimate expression of love, setting for us a pattern of a sacrificial life and love between us. To do this he to not only live it but to find a way to sow it so that we could live it on any given day. He could then become joined to us, as the head of his body, the church.John 10:17 The Father loves me because I lay down my life voluntarily that I may have it back again. No one can take my life without my consent - For I have the right and power to lay it down when I want to and also the right and power to take it again. For the Father has given me this right.John 12:24 , truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 20. and through him to reconcile to himself all things together whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross. This would mean the return of cosmic peace, as it was even from before the beginning. Jesus has to bring everything in the universe together to be in harmony with him and his perfect relational order (reconciled). No more thorns and thistles that were part of the curse upon the earth from when Adam fell, or earthquakes, tsunamis etc. This all happens all the time, everything collides, the laws of physics of a natural world. But the earth groans under all of this and is waiting for the next age. A new heaven and a new earth.Romans 8:19 For all creation is waiting patiently and hopefully for that future day when God will resurrect his children. For on that day thorns and thistles, sin, death, and decay--the things that overcame the world at God's command--will all disappear, and the world around us will share in the glorious freedom which God's children enjoy. 21 And you who were once hostile are now being reconciles (re-ordered) into oneness with Him and are being made innocent in his eyes if you remain in the faith because of this message which has been proclaimed to all creation. The hostility between God and man was only on our part. Jesus did not have to change any notion of hostility of the Father’s heart towards us. He came to change the hostility in the heart of humanity towards God, and is still doing that through the Holy Spirit. The Father wanted a family and a family home. Jesus built the home and then became the home by being born from above by the Spirit. He was in the Father in him while he lived upon the earth with the Holy Spirit. He then rose from the dead and Holy spirit went with him. He then sent the Holy Spirit to come and be with us. And now the Holy Spirit makes humanity the home for Father Son and Holy Spirit to dwell in (John 14:3,23 – We will come and make our home with him). All of this is for all of humanity but it only has meaning on a day to day basis, here and now, for those to whom this message (which has been proclaimed) is listened to, understood, and taken hold of by faith and lived in with hope. The Holy Spirit now seeks to fashion us into our uniqueness as a person joined to himself as One Spirit, so that we feel at home with Father’s idea of who we are in his eyes from the beginning. So let us turn our eyes upon Jesus – let the things of earth grow strangely dim – in the light of his glory and grace.

RESET REBUILD We shared last week about Israel returning home to Jerusalem after seventy years of being in bondage in Babylon, and now the 50,000 exiles are under the leadership of Zerubbabel who was in charge of the rebuilding of the temple which was destroyed when Nebuchadnezzar had demolished the city of Jerusalem . The first thing that they did was the rebuilding of the altar of sacrifice which launched them into a new future. I likened this reset for God’s people at that time to the reset we can prepare ourselves for at this moment in history Everything had come to a standstill for them –There are parallels in this story in Israel’s experiencing of a reset of their place as God’s people in the Earth, and the Church’s experiencing of a coming reset of taking its place as a witness for God in the Earth today. The next thing for Zerubbabel to do was to survey and lay down the foundation of the temple. There was not only no foundation and no temple there was no real city, and there were no walls – and that meant they were open to enemy attack, and they had to learn how to deal with that. Pressures that came from having to re-settle had drained their energies, and comparisons to stories of the glory of Solomon's temple began to breed discouragement that they could never rebuild this temple as glorious as that one, if at all. Where do you start? It is hard to get started when there is discouragement. But they knew they had to just start. They were facing a time of enormous change but they had started with the right project – the altar of sacrifice, and then came the temple foundation, and after that there would be the temple. It was going to be hard work, and that never changes because hard work will always be hard work, but what does change is our faith. That is based on knowing that God is with us and God is for us, no matter what comes against us. Zechariah who was a prophet of Judah at the time was directed by God to encourage and instruct Zerubbabel. Zechariah 4:2-10 "This is God's message to Zerubbabel: `Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord Almighty-- you will succeed because of my Spirit, though you are few and weak.' 7 Therefore no mountain, however high, can stand before Zerubbabel! It will flatten out before you! You have laid the foundation of this Temple and you will finish building it with its capstone in its place shouting 'grace and thanksgiving' for God's mercy, declaring that all was done by grace alone. (Then you will know these messages are from God, the Lord Almighty.)"… Another message that I received from the Lord said: 10 Do not despise this day of small beginnings, for the eyes of the Lord rejoice to see the work begin, to see the plumbline in the hand of Zerubbabel. FOUNDATIONS AND THE CORNERSTONESIn relation to architecture, a cornerstone is traditionally the first stone laid for the foundation of a structure, with all the other stones laid in reference to that. The cornerstone marks the geographical location by orienting a building in a specific line of direction.I would like to read a Scripture from Isaiah is quoted in the Gospels and Epistles about Jesus being the cornerstone and foundation of the Church.Isaiah 28:16 Behold, I am the one who has laid as a foundation in Zion, a stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone of a sure foundation: ‘Whoever believes will be ready.’ And I will make justice the line, and righteousness the plumb line; THE FOUNDATIONThe Church is God’s living temple today, the Body of Christ, and Jesus is the foundation upon which our lives, individually and corporately are being rebuilt and restored. When the church shares the common foundational apostolic and prophetic truth of growing up together into His life we begin to occupy that precious ground of truth and are called to build upon that foundation. 1Corinthians 3:10 According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it. For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Part of the reset of the Church is the rebuilding together upon that foundation of apostolic and prophetic truth that brings the unity that is called the ‘unity of the faith’. Ephesians 4:13 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ. The unity of the faith is not defined solely by articles of faith agreed upon by the different councils of the Church .These have been gifted to us through the centuries, because as true and substantial as these may be, they can tend to represent the ‘complete’ fund of the knowledge of God. I personally embrace these confessions of faith as part of sacred tradition, but I do not see them as exhausting the work of the Holy Spirit in leading us into ALL truth as he reveals Jesus to us through his word. The unity of the faith is simply the expression of the life of Christ being lived out individually and corporately wherever we are and whatever ethnic or cultural background we have. There have been times in the past when there was the need for the reset of reformation throughout the history of the church because of misleading doctrines of man made errors of emphasis or self serving agendas. There are doctrines based on valid Scriptures that are not necessarily part of that foundation in the sense that for the time being they remain veiled or obscure, like what will be the lifestyle management structure of the millennium? Arguments and uncertainties abound about these Scriptures that bring division, not unity. I have a real certainty about the millennium – It is that whatever the millennium will be, it will be nothing like what I would have imagined. There are foundational doctrines that become distorted because they are more about ‘my will be done’ rather than ‘thy will be done’. The doctrine of the power of Jesus for forgiveness and salvation itself becomes narrowed and limited to a predestined ‘elect’. Doctrines of healing become demands of healing from God just by quoting a verse of Scripture at him, whether or not the person actually gets healed. I see a prayer for healing get answered when I see a person actually healed. God does these things of course when he WILLS them to be done. I do not see these failed acts of misled zeal as always the craftiness in deceitful schemes mentioned in that verse from Ephesians above, but rather as an incomplete understanding of faith. People get possessed by an idea, and it can be a good idea, but it is not a God idea, and the idea ends up possessing them They become possessed by an idea that brings agonizing striving for it to succeed and just as agonizing justification for its many failures. An idea is incomplete when it it’s manifestation in reality is not completed, and so that person’s faith life is incomplete. Paul wrote to the church in Corinth and shared this concern with them. 2Corinthians 11:3 But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from the simple and pure devotion to Christ. THE CORNERSTONE AND THE PLUMBLINEThe plumb line touches the foundation spot on at the Cornerstone – Jesus. Everything becomes straight up and down when it comes from heaven to earth through Jesus and then touches us and goes back to Heaven through Jesus, without who we can do nothing, and through whom we can do all things. When the plumb line is dragged across to some point on the field of that foundation where one of those incomplete ideas of faith is energized by our urgency to see something supernatural happen that plumb line is not straight up and down anymore - there’s an angle. The plumb line speaks of the vertical touching of Heaven and earth and about how that can be measured in our lives. We are part of both Heaven and earth through Jesus and The Holy Spirit. The plumb line plumbs the depth of our alignment with The Holy Spirit’s revelation of God’s Word to us, and our harmony and devotion to Jesus. So that is both about the knowing of God through his Word and in the living out of his life within us.Not only do we need to ponder the wonder of receiving the life of Jesus into our lives, but more importantly to marvel at and deliberate upon the desire of Jesus to receive us into his life and to share with him in his loving and obedient life with The Father. Deliberate on the simple truth of who God is through the revelation of what the Word (Logos) says that HE says about HIMSELF.Jeremiah 9:24 I anyone wants to boast about anything let them boast in this, that they understand and know me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and uprightness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.” There are some things coming out of this that you can say to yourself about God;ONE – You love me with an everlasting love. That teaches me to love.TWO – Your justice means that I receive mercy and am accepted despite my shortcomings. Your justice also means that because you love me you will discipline me so that I can say ‘You are right (always) and I am wrong (mostly) – and that teaches me about repentance.THREE – Your uprightness means that you will always guide me in the path of your wisdom and truth and provide your best for my life. That teaches me about faith and trust in your supernatural work on my behalf in the world of the unseen. The Cornerstone (the foundation stone, or setting stone) is where the plumb line from Heaven touches the foundation on the earth. Jesus is the Cornerstone of the foundation where Heaven touches the earth. That is where the perpendicular measurement is spot on. Any other place on the foundation can be pushed out of alignment! The closer you get to Jesus the better the reading. Many times in the Old Testament people placed a stone to mark a special place of orientation or remembrance of a work of God. Jacob placed his head upon an anointed stone and had the vision of a ladder reaching to Heaven. The anointed stone is the place where Heaven touches the earth. God tells Zerubbabel that it is not by might or power or human strength but by the Spirit of God, that the work would be completed. He tells him to shout 'grace and thanksgiving' for God's mercy, declaring that all was done by grace alone. Grace means that it is not our power but the empowering presence of The Holy Spirit which flattens out the mountains before us.God tells Zerubbabel to ‘despise not the day of small beginnings for the eyes of the Lord rejoice to see the work begin,’. So make a start to reset and rebuild through grace and thanksgiving and see the work begin. I remember sharing to people in church some time ago about deliberating upon the desire of Jesus to receive us into his life and to share with him in his loving and obedient life with The Father, to deliberate on the simple truth of who God is through the revelation of what the Word (Logos) says that HE says about HIMSELF – his Steadfast love and justice and uprightness etc. and to do it for ten or fifteen minutes at a time - no prayer requests, just deliberating on God – meditation if you like. I though maybe I’m putting too big a yoke on these dear people. Then I found myself saying – Look, try it for ten seconds whenever you can. I was incredibly blessed to get feedback from someone who said that this had been lifechanging for them. We start NOW. The reason we procrastinate is that we despise small beginnings and never make a start because there’s always something more important to do – well not this time. (What reason do you have to not accept Jesus as your best friend?)

24 November 2019 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe Luke 23:35-43 + Homily 18 Minutes 22 Seconds Link to the Readings: http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/112419.cfm (New American Bible, Revised Edition) From the parish bulletin:   If from time to time you have a sense that all things held dear in both Church and State seem to be collapsing, you might find a comrade in the Irish poet William Butler Yeats: Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world, The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere The ceremony of innocence is drowned; The best lack all conviction, while the worst Are full of passionate intensity.     Yeats wrote that in 1919, and we are now in 2019. Actually, things have been falling apart since the Fall of Man. Each age has to contend with that collapse, and each has had recourse to Christ as the solution. In 1925, Pope Pius XI proclaimed the Feast of Christ the King. Not King of various nations cobbled together, but King of the Universe. “The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. . . . He is before all things, and in him all things hold together” (Colossians 1:15, 17).    Jesus Christ is the Word that brought into existence all that was in the mind of his divine Father. His kingship consists in the power of his Logos, which orders all things and is energized by the love between him and the Father, which pours forth as the Holy Spirit.  “In the beginning was the Word [‘Logos’] . . .” (John 1:1).    In the logic of the Logos then, all things fall apart without Christ. Physically, all things hold together (sunestēken) in their elemental atomic structures. The compactness of matter requires gravity, electricity, strong nuclear force and weak nuclear force. The strong force keeps the nucleus together; otherwise it would come apart by the electrostatic repulsion between the positive protons. Christ the Logos prevents all things from collapsing, not only physically but morally and culturally. There will be a time when that happens, with a “loud noise” (rhoizedon), when all the elements, or atoms (stoicheia), dissolve (2 Peter 3:10).    This dissolution happens as well in the human soul when the intellect and will tear themselves from the truth and will of God. This rupture is what is called sin. It affects cultures, too. So the philosopher Giambattista Vico described the transition of cultures from barbarity to civilization, and from civilization to hyper-civilization, and from that to post-civilization. The fourth stage lives off the detritus of civilization. Whether we are in the fourth stage—post-civilization—is disputed, but if and when it irrationally abandons Christ the King, whose power is not political but logical, it will be worse than the first barbarism because its disintegration is accelerated by the tools of its former civilization’s science.    Every Christian is baptized to proclaim the Kingship of Christ, not just for personal salvation, but as a means of saving a culture in which “The best lack all conviction, while the worst / Are full of passionate intensity.”

For four hundred years before Jesus came to Earth, God had prepared the then known world to be conquered, ruled and assimilated by the Greeks, under Alexander the Great. The Greek territories absorbed the conquered cultures and developed philosophical principles of government and culture and thought (Socrates, Plato Aristotle). The one overarching thought that encompassed the meaning, wonder and design of an ordered Universe was the concept of the Logos. It was a belief that Logos was some form of intentional idea/principle (abstract?!) that can be seen everywhere; it made up the earth, trees and even us as humans, and logos does not just give everything form; it also gives it order. For humans, this means that logos determines who is who and who is placed where, because logos, the immutable essence of life and underlying master plan for all events, encompasses the entire world and, therefore, constitutes the ideal way to order it. In fact, logos is perpetually working to move the universe forward in the best way possible. This Stoic philosophical thought meant that even when people went through difficult periods of life, they kept faith that they fitted into the grand plan of logos, since everything that happens is answerable to and ordered by what is right. This word was also the belief system of the Roman Emperor, Marcus Aurelius (contained in those thoughts above). For the Jewish Nation over that same four hundred year period (called the ‘silent years), after the book of Malachi was written, the last book of the Old Testament, The Jewish people had no Prophets, and no living Word from God. They had the Torah, and other Scriptures, which they endlessly studied and debated. This was the state of the mindset of that world that Jesus was born into.So the following Scripture by the Apostle John astonished the then known world, both Jews and Greeks; John 1:2-5 In the beginning was the Word (Logos), and the Word (Logos) was with God, and the Word (Logos) was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.14. And the Word (Logos) became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.16. And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace. For the law (Torah) was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. To the Greeks the Logos was a powerful concept, as described above; it wasn’t thought of as a person…To the Jews the Word was the Torah, the Commandments, the Statutes, the Covenant; Words written by God. They immersed themselves in the Word and in this way they were bound to God and his ways. (Psalm 119).But the Gospel was that LOGOS had arrived, a person, Jesus Christ, born of The Spirit, the living seed of life from above. And Jesus caused us to be bound to God, joined to God through himself, the Logos, the creative fulness of God’s love and wisdom and power for good in the Universe. This was the new seed of life from Heaven which has been planted in us, the fulness of God - born to grow and mature and bear the fruit of God’s ways. Jesus told them he was Logos as the seed of the word, and he told the Jews he was more than Torah John 5:38 But you do not have His word (Logos) abiding in you, because whom He sent, Him you do not believe. You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.1Peter 1:23 since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word (Logos) of God; We allow, by our conscious faith and thanksgiving, this living Logos to form and shape us, filling our minds and hearts. (John 5:38)The parable of the sower (Matthew 13) speaks of the growth of that seed, that depends upon the heart response to the logos, and the conscious attention we give to the cultivation of that seed. There are four types of heart responses – disordered mind, distressed heart, materialistic distraction, or hearts of faith in Jesus.

In 325 AD, bishops, priests and deacons came from east and west to form the first of seven ecumenical councils, the Council of Nicaea, to meet around the specific need to discipline the false teaching of Arius, an extremely popular Priest, who insisted that Christ was a created being, not homousious – of the same eternal being with the Father (homoiousious - of a similar being). Though a presbyter, his influence was akin to a modern day “super-apostle”, for a majority network of churches gathered around his teaching. And he was extremely charismatic … incorporating this new revelation about Jesus and the Church; he also was a composer, creating loads of new worship material … applying much of his thinking into song with lyrics such as there was a time when he was not. For Arius, the pre-incarnate LOGOS was semidivine, created not eternally begotten, of one being with the Father. Let's go with John 1 and put Arius to rest: In the beginning was the Word (Logos) and the Word was with God and the Word WAS GOD. So, in this case, the phrase in the Creed, one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church isn’t addressing the function of apostles today nor does it refer to independent, apostolic networks. On the contrary, the Creed aims to locate the Church within the historic succession of apostolic faith and teaching, handed down from Jesus to the original apostles, sent forth into all nations. The first generation apostles passed on the faith and ordained bishops (Ignatius of Antioch, Polycarp, Clement, for example) to plant churches (bishop, priest, deacons) throughout their regional spheres. This is, one might say, the sacramental, organizational makeup of the Church for the first 1500 years, and continues in the Church of the Great Tradition. Apostolic: Apostolic faith echoes the letter of Jude v. 3 - "... to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints." Nothing novel, creative or added to the apostolic tradition. It reaches back to I John 1:1-5 ... read This is what Paul in Ephesians 2:19-22 and chapter 4 is addressing … read We are being built up as a supernatural, world-wide, heaven-wide, redeemed household of faith, filled with the Spirit of adoption, called to do the greater things in the power of the Spirit Apostle – literally means “one who is sent”. Before we think of the original twelve men Jesus chose, we should remember that Jesus is THE Apostle: “Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession,” Hebrews 3:1. (Also, Jesus is called in I Peter 2:25: “the Shepherd & Bishop of your souls.” Jesus is your inner pastor and your inner bishop! The original twelve apostles derived their authority and formation from THE Apostle, Jesus. And Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, continues to accompany his sent ones today. Luke describes it like this in Acts 1:1: “In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach.” Jesus continues to do and teach through his one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. So the Greek word apostle is used to describe the original 12, another group of 70, plus Matthias and Paul — and then 11 others. As the first generation New Testament apostles passed away, successors to the apostles, called bishops (episcopoi) carried on the work of overseeing a province or a diocese of sorts. This is where current apostolic movements diverge and move right from the NT to their current situation, bypassing historical continuity. But Jesus is a historical figure and commissioned 12 apostles to disciple the nations, multiplying his life through sowing the seeds of the gospel. Through faith and grace, we are in this continuity made possible by the Holy Spirit animating the earthly body of Christ, the Church Jesus is building. The Names and Titles of Jesus – Jesus The Word/Logos This series of the names and titles of Jesus will give us a more in-depth understanding of Jesus Christ our Lord. This is the second in the series. The following is an outline. 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was with God in the beginning. 3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.4In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome[a] it. 6There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. 8He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. 9The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.10He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—13children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. 14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15(John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’”) 16Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given. 17For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. and[b] is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known. Exodus 33 :20 But," he said, "you cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live.“ 1 Timothy 6:16 He alone is immortal and dwells in unapproachable light. No one has ever seen Him, nor can anyone see Him. To Him be honor and eternal dominion! Amen. 18No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and[b] is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known. Jesus the Word Pre-existent Co-existent Self-existent John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was with God in the beginning. 3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.4In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. 14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. 1Co 1:24 but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God Col 1:15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation Heb 1:6 And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says, “Let all God's angels worship him. 22“The LORD brought me forth as the first of his works,[c][d] before his deeds of old; 23I was formed long ages ago, at the very beginning, when the world came to be. 24When there were no watery depths, I was given birth, when there were no springs overflowing with water; 25before the mountains were settled in place, before the hills, I was given birth, 26before he made the world or its fields or any of the dust of the earth. 27I was there when he set the heavens in place, when he marked out the horizon on the face of the deep, 28when he established the clouds above and fixed securely the fountains of the deep, 29when he gave the sea its boundary so the waters would not overstep his command, and when he marked out the foundations of the earth. 30 Then I was constantly[e] at his side. I was filled with delight day after day, rejoicing always in his presence, 31rejoicing in his whole world and delighting in mankind. 32“Now then, my children, listen to me; blessed are those who keep my ways. 33Listen to my instruction and be wise; do not disregard it. 34Blessed are those who listen to me, watching daily at my doors, waiting at my doorway. 35For those who find me find life and receive favor from the LORD. 36But those who fail to find me harm themselves; all who hate me love death.” Predetermined Counsel of God. Eph 1:4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, 1Pe 1:19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 20 He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake 7No, we declare God’s wisdom, a mystery that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began The Wisdom of God 7No, we declare God’s wisdom, a mystery that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began 23but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. The Word = Logos is the name of Jesus Reason Why John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The Jews understood that the Logos, the Word of God, was God revealing Himself, God creating, God acting, God alive in His creation Targum Aramaic translation of the Hebrew Bible. (Yahweh) Aramaic term that means “the word.” It’s the word memra. Greek Septuagint memra “the word.” translation logos in Greek for example, in Genesis 15: “After this, the word [logos] of the Lord came to Abram in a vision.” Psalm 33, verse 6: “By the word [by the logos] of the Lord were the heavens made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth.” Lord were the heavens made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth.” -The apostle John is the only New Testament author to call Jesus “the Word.” He does so in the Gospel of John, and in his first Epistle of John, and also, as we’ll see, in the book of Revelation. -When he talks about the “Word,” that’s the Greek word logos. So when you see the “Word,” that’s the logos. John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John said 4 things about the Word Logos His Eternity 2. His Personality 3. His Deity 4. His Humanity John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 Problems Too high a view of John 2. Too low a view of Jesus More divine than human? More human than divine? Partly human, partly divine? Fully human, fully divine! The Incarnation of the Word of Life 1 John 1 (NIV) 1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. 2The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. 3We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. THE WORD I AM  (Yahweh) = LORD = “the word.” It’s the word memra= logos in Greek Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, John infused this word with a richer, fuller meaning-- not an impersonal force but a person, God made flesh. Jesus was God’s mirror, God’s way of making Himself known to His creation. The definition of a word John 1:18,No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father's side [Jesus, the Logos/Word of God], he has made him known. 2 Corinthians 4:6 For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," [that God who spoke in Genesis 1] has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God [how?] in the face of Jesus Christ [the Logos, the Word]. If Christmas is associated with the birth of Jesus Christ, then we should know what that birth really meant according to the ancient prophecies of Scripture.  There was a certain point in time, a point in history where the eternal Word/Logos of God "manifested" in human form in this dimension and cosmos.  Also, there was a very distinct and specific reason for that "appearing" here on earth, and it wasn't for what we consider "Christmas"  celebrations today.  Actually, nothing in history ever happened that was bigger, more magnificent, or stunning than the All Mighty creator revealing Himself in the flesh.  Join us as we unpack the real gift of Christmas and share that great news with you.

The Bible is filled with journey upon journey. From Genesis to Revelation, Scripture is full of people on the move and today we are continuing that journey with the Gospel Of John. The gospel of John includes only seven miracles—John calls them “signs”—to demonstrate the deity of Christ and illustrate His ministry. Some of these miracles and stories, such as the raising of Lazarus, are found only in John. His is the most theological of the four Gospels, and he often gives the reason behind events mentioned in the other gospels. The gospel of John shares much about the approaching ministry of the Holy Spirit after Jesus’ ascension. There are certain words or phrases that create a recurring theme in the gospel of John: believe, witness, Comforter, life – death, light – darkness, I am, and love. The gospel of John introduces Jesus Christ, not from His birth, but from “the beginning,” before creation. John calls Jesus “the Word” (Logos) who, as God Himself, was involved in every aspect of creation (John 1:1–3) and who later became flesh (verse 14) in order that He might take away our sins as the spotless Lamb of God (verse 29). The gospel of John includes several spiritual conversations, such as Jesus’ talk with the Samaritan woman that shows Him as the Messiah (John 4:26) and Jesus’ meeting with Nicodemus that explains salvation through by His vicarious death on the cross (John 3:14–16). In the gospel of John, Jesus repeatedly angers the Jewish leaders by correcting them (John 2:13–16); healing on the Sabbath, and claiming traits belonging only to God (John 5:18; 8:56–59; 9:6, 16; 10:33). The last nine chapters of the gospel of John deal with the final week of Jesus’ life. Jesus prepares His disciples for His coming death and for their ministry after His resurrection and ascension (John 14–17). He then willingly dies on the cross in our place (John 10:15–18), paying our sin debt in full (John 19:30) so that whoever trusts in Him will be saved (John 3:14–16). Jesus then rises from the dead, convincing even the most doubting of His disciples that He is God and Master (John 20:24–29).

Jesus said: "Heaven and earth will pass away, but my word will never pass away."  He asserts the eternal nature of his Word.  His Word is prior to the material universe.  Therefore he is the Creator God.  The Scriptures teach that the Word of Jesus is intrinsic reality. His Word is the opposite of falsehood, and lies.  His Word is apolitical, and not of this age(aion).  His Word upholds all things, and by him all things consist (hold together).  One would do well to hear him effectively.

Two of the four gospels, Mathew and Luke, start with the account of Jesus birth.– Mark starts with the ministry of Jesus. But what about John's Gospel? He starts way before the birth of Jesus – back to the beginning – the beginning of time itself, when the world was created. His opening statement is: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word WAS God.” Then in vs.14 John says: ‘And The Word became Human and lived with us…' This is the beginning of the Christmas story! Jesus is called ‘The Word - Logos' - The principle of divine reason and creative order. He could have been called ‘The Thought - alogismos' or ‘The Act - poeisis', or ‘The Feeling - Pathos'. But these would not have had the same clarity as ‘The Word'. ‘The Thought' could have left us still wondering what the thought was, just as would ‘The Feeling'. And ‘The Act' would have made us just mere spectators of some mighty deed. No – It had to be ‘The Word'. The principle of divine reason and creative order. The Word is the expression and articulation of Who God is. Jesus was, and still is the Logos, summing up everything that can be said about Who God is, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (NB The Word of the Kingdom Matt13) Hebrews 1:3 …He is the radiance of the glory of God, the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the Word (Logos) of his power. (ESV) 1Peter 1:23 having been born again not of corruptible seed but of incorruptible seed through the Word (Logos) of God which lives and abides forever. At a pre-determined time in history Divinity joined Humanity and a new species was born – Homo Divinicus. He had come to plant the Divine Logos into Humanity for all time. Humanity is now lifted into a new plane of intelligent existence. Jesus was the incorruptible seed, the Logos, planted in us as he went into the ground and died and rose again in all of us. James 1.21 Receive with meekness the implanted Logos that redesigns and shapes your soul.  This now creates our reality shaping our thoughts and our emotions. It creates what we do. Humanity is now lifted into a Heavenly position, and ANY human can have 'the principle  of divine reason and creative order' - that is Jesus as Logos fully expressing Who God is in their daily life – He became human to live with us. He has joined Himself to us because Jesus wants humanity on earth to express God. The Jesus Word is our blueprint that will live in us and bring understanding, truth and wisdom into any and every situation we face. He will inspire acts of virtue and courage, feelings of joy and peace, and most of all, plant love deep within our hearts. It is no wonder this event is celebrated around the world every year – even by people who do not understand or believe in the cosmic truth it contains. It is universal – it is to be believed by ALL of humanity because it is for ALL humanity.

When you think of  WORD in the Bible what comes to mind for you? Maybe it’s the written word of God? Maybe it’s Jesus? Or, maybe it’s the prompting and guiding of the Holy Spirit in your life? Well, it’s all of those things. When we look at WORD in the Bible it’s not limited to one idea or one definition, but it is 3 words (no pun intended) in one. I think to best understand the meaning and the power behind the WORD in the bible, is we give it a name that helps us identify those 3 different meanings. THE INCARNATION OF GOD IN CHRISTJohn  1:14 “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”I have mentioned the incarnation in a meditation before. But this verse must focus entirely on that subject. John dips deep into the mysteries of God and comes up with the astounding truth of God becoming a Man. Without this truth we do not have a Saviour in Christ. It took the incarnation to qualify him for the life he lived, i.e., a life of absolute sinlessness. He lived the life he lived to qualify him for the death he died, i.e., a substitutionary death. He died the death he died to give me the gift of grace, i.e., eternal life. His good example cannot save us. That would be the equivalent of keeping the law. If I can't keep the law in written form, I can't follow his perfect example. You see I am not perfect and no matter how hard I try, I can't reach that standard of righteousness. So, my only hope is to have a Saviour who would pay the debt I owe and give to me the righteousness that I can offer to God as the holiness I need, if I am ever to see God. This is the gospel. Jesus died to pay for my sins and give me his perfect righteousness (Rom.  +5:17). That is a good trade and that is the gift of grace. There are four things that stand out in this verse. First, the Word made flesh. John says, “And the Word was made flesh.” The Word is capitalized in our KJV and rightfully so. It is the same Word (Logos) that is in verse one. This Word that was in the beginning, that was with God and was God is now made flesh. The word “made” (ginomai) means “became” and is an aorist tense, middle voice and indicative mood. The aorist tense means that he became flesh at a point of time. This is the Christmas story. It was in a stable because there was no room in the Inn. Jesus was the eternal Logos, uncreated, eternal, coexistent and coeternal with the Father. But he became something when he “became” flesh that he had never been before, i.e., a Man. It is middle voice. The middle voice is where the subject acts in its own behalf and participates in the result of the action. Jesus, the God man, wholly God and wholly man, has united man with himself so that Man is now the image of the invisible God. Hebrews 1:3 says of Jesus, “Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;”God made man in his image. Genesis  +1:27 says, “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” And later when God made a law concerning murder he says in Genesis 9:6, “Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.” The image of God is marred in man through sin as recorded in Genesis chapter three. But it is restored completely in the person of Christ. The image could never be restored through obedience. If this could have been done then the Law of Moses would have been the answer. The only solution for sinful man is for God to become a man and do as man what man was created to do, i.e., be perfect in his relationship to God. But this is not all. He did not become God incarnate just so there would be one man that would be as God created man to be, i.e., the perfect image of the invisible God. But he did this so that man as a sinner could be reconciled and restored and he could lead a host of the redeemed into the presence of God, all with the restored image of the invisible God. 2 Cor.  +5:19 says, “To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.” There you have it. The purpose of the incarnation is the reconciling of the world. John says, “The word was made flesh.”

The story is full of deep meaning for the shifting seasons of our lives. For those of our congregation who were not present, may I encourage you to listen to the sermon here and, or take a moment to reflect on the following summary. The risen Lord encounters a couple on the road to Emmaus. Despondent and disillusioned by the death of their Messiah, they walk away from Jerusalem, the epicenter and climax of redemptive history. Most likely, this is husband and wife, Cleopas and Mary (John 19:25), processing together what took place on Good Friday and the report of the empty tomb. They have not understood the deeper implications of these events. Why? Because they were walking away from Jerusalem, giving up on the dream, the vision marking their lives. Isn't this our core challenge? First, as a stranger, the risen Lord walks alongside and listens to their conversation. The story is correct, but they fail to understand. In hoping for the redemption of Israel, they only saw it fulfilled through military aggression. And their commander had just been taken out. As Jesus hears their story of hopeless defeat, he engages as they walk. Beginning with Moses through the Prophets, he tells a fresh perspective of Israel's story. They listen, with burning hearts, how their Messiah, before becoming human, was working and moving along with God the Father and the Holy Spirit, from creation forward, to bring about the one and final solution for the broken, fallen condition of the whole world. God had to become a human being to redeem and restore his good creation. Thus, the Father sent his Son, the Word (Logos) who spoke creation into existence, to be united with his created order. The agent of creation would become the agent of cosmic healing and transformation. We now understand the Torah, the Psalms and Prophets through the lens of Christ. We all have a story by which we’re defined. Consider how your own story has shaped your identity. Is Christ the determining factor of your story or something or someone else? Christ invites us not only into his story but into his very being, his life. I believe this is the story into which he invited them. See how it all fits together? Jesus drives it all home by a final question, "Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?" This is the interpretive key to all the Scriptures. Only through the suffering love of the Son can new birth, new creation begin ... on the first day, the story begins. Echos of Genesis. As they approached their destination, they strongly urged Jesus to stay with them. Jesus accepted their invitation. This, too, is another clue from Luke for going farther and deeper with Jesus. Jesus responds to our invitations, to our hunger to abide in him. As they settled in and began to eat at table, Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Luke says, “Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight.” This might seem an odd way to exit, but, again, Luke is cluing us in on something. We no longer know the risen Lord as a mere historical human being, but after the Spirit. He has ascended to send us his Spirit by which we cry, “Abba, Father" and “Come, Lord Jesus!” Luke continues to describe how this couple reflected afterwards how their hearts burned as the risen Lord opened the Scriptures to them. We now see the context for how Christians worship, a twofold rhythm of Word and Sacrament, very much akin to the ancient liturgical form to which we embrace. This first meal of Christ’s new creation is an echo of the first meal recorded in Genesis, when another couple, Adam and Eve, ate from the wrong source. In their disobedience, their eyes, too, were opened. Naked and ashamed, they ran from the voice of the Lord walking in the cool of the Garden. Luke seems to be illustrating to us that "we are what we eat" and that the way back to life is eating the new meal of the Kingdom. For Jesus is the bread of life. The meal which introduced sin and death into the world no longer has a hold on God's creation. In Christ, we now celebrate the feast with continual thanksgiving. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. Burning hearts become broken bread for the life of the world. Word and Sacrament are bound together as worship and mission. Though the hour is late and the road is dangerous, they get up and go back to Jerusalem. After the clouds have lifted and they understand the story, after recognizing him in the Eucharist, they can remain no longer at a distance. They make their way back to join their brothers and sisters, waiting for the promise of the Father and what would alter history, the emergence of the Church, the body of Christ. This is the path of suffering love, the way of the cross. Our journey to the Holy City is a similar one. Bearing fruit requires death to our egos, our selfish desires. In this exchange, we have the mind of Christ, the peace, the grace, the life of Christ. Thought death his life reigns in us and the world. This pattern is imprinted within the created order, from a grain of wheat to the metamorphosis of catapillars. Paradoxically, by letting go of my life (pertaining to what I think, want and feel), I gain Christ, the resurrection and the life. He takes us and breaks us and gives us to the world as sent members of his broken body. As we feed upon his living words and eat and drink of his risen life, we remember the Lord’s death until he comes. And, until he comes, we are his ambassadors of reconciliation. By his Spirit, he continues to appear, to speak, to bring understanding to our lives. His risen promise is his presence. "I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Alleluia, Christ is risen!
