S2E8: Trashed or treasure? Will deep sea mining ruin oceans?

Rich lodes of valuable metals lie on the seafloor. Will a global rush to mine them be allowed – and will doing so damage the world’s oceans? Synopsis: Every first and third Tuesday of the month, The Straits Times analyses the beat of the changing environment, from biodiversity conservation to climate change. Scattered across the sea bed are trillions of potato-sized lumps brimming with lucrative metals vital to making electric vehicle batteries, wind turbines, smartphones and much more. This is sparking a “blue rush”, as some countries and companies are eager to cash-in on them. Yet the mining of polymetallic nodules remains banned and there are growing concerns that scooping them off the sea floor risks disrupting one of the most important, but still poorly understood, parts of the planet. In this episode, hosts Audrey Tan and David Fogarty speak with The Pew Charitable Trusts’ project director of ocean governance Julian Jackson on the risks. Highlights of conversation (click/tap above): 2:12 Three different types of deep sea mining 6:42 Environmental impacts of deep sea mining 12:21 Why countries are pushing for deep sea mining 14:58 Implication of Micronesian country Nauru announcing intention to start sea bed mining. 17:02 Is deep sea mining necessary? Visit us at Network2020.org.The technological world is built by critical minerals like nickel, cobalt, and lithium. As the demand for clean energy expands, so does the demand for these metals and rare earth elements. While these materials have historically been mined on land, a trove of critical minerals is lying on the seabed and being captured by the competitive, booming, and opaque deep-sea-mining industry. The U.S. is missing out in this race while its geopolitical competitors, China and Russia are getting ahead in this industry. On the other hand, scientists and environmentalists are raising concerns regarding the environmental impacts of the industry's activities. What is the scope and growth potential of this industry? How is it governed? How can countries balance environmental goals with economic and geopolitical ones?Join us for a conversation with Julian Jackson, Project Director of Ocean Governance at the Pew Charitable Trusts; Vasser Seydel, President of The Oxygen Project ;and Victor Vescovo, Founder and CEO of Caladan Capital LLC and Renowned Undersea Explorer where they discuss the deep-sea mining industry, its governance, geopolitics, potential environmental impacts and more.Music by Yurii Semchyshyn from PixabayMusic by Sergii Pavkin from Pixabay

Marshal Pétain emerged from the First World War as a French national hero. His defence of Verdun had set him on course to become one of France's most venerated commanders. But by 1945 the Marshal was on trial for treason, having collaborated with Nazi Germany as the head of the Vichy regime.Dan is joined by Julian Jackson, author of the Pol Roger Duff Cooper Prize-winning book 'France on Trial: The Case of Marshal Pétain'. What a week it was for the sport of boxing. It had a bit of everything that we've come to expect in this incredible sport. From masterful showings by Naoya Inoue and Canelo Alvarez to Ryan Garcia failing a drug test after sucking on some tree bark capsules, it certainly gave us plenty to talk about. The performances of Canelo and Inoue take centre stage following their respective victories over Jaime Munguia and Luis Nery. Both were impressive for different reasons. Garcia's failed test(s) reminded us not to get too giddy with the state of boxing today. We dip into that story for about as long as we can stand it. There's the latest Vasily Lomachenko fight to preview – George Kambosos surely has no chance, right? - and in This Week In History we relive the violence that occurred when Julian Jackson and Gerald McClellan had a memorable ‘who can hit the hardest' competition back in 1993. Following its liberation in 1944, France began a reckoning with its years of defeat, occupation and collaboration with Nazi Germany. On trial was Marshal Philippe Pétain, the decorated World War I hero and onetime head of the collaborationist regime known as Vichy France. Speaking to Danny Bird, Julian Jackson discusses the role the trial played in the nation's attempt to reconcile itself with this controversial chapter in its history. The Hall of Famer from the Virgin Islands, Julian Jackson is undoubtedly one of the biggest punchers the sport has seen. Jackson knocked out 49 of 55 opponents, creating one of the sport's great highlight reels along the way.  He was a Don King stalwart, but some of the big fights Jackson wanted, against the likes of Roy Jones and James Toney, failed to materialise, but Jackson had two violent battles with Gerald McClellan, a shootout with Mike McCallum, annihilated Buster Drayton, Dennis Milton, Terry Norris and infamously blew Herol Graham away with a shocking knockout when behind on the cards and blinded in one eye. Jackson talks about his journey, which was shaped by an alcoholic mother, to being a father, growing up rough, missing out on the boycotted Olympics of 1980 and his sensational ride through the sport and into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

There was a time when French people put up picture of Marshal Philippe Petain on their walls. He is a figure of immeasurable stature to the country of France. Victor of Verdun, a one-time minister of war, and finally, a traitor to his country. Or was he? Did Petain allow the stain of collaboration to tarnish his reputation, or did he use his figure to guard the French people from worse Nazi atrocities during the Vichy era? The answer to those questions would divide France in the years following World War II. The trial of Petain, which took place during a humid July in 1945, would leave some venerating the figure of Petain while others looked upon him as betrayer of the French people. Professor Julian Jackson, is professor emeritus of history with Queen Mary University of London. Geffen surmised that the company should be transformed from a manufacturing firm to a design, marketing, and licensing company. "You guys stink at manufacturing," he said.

The ocean makes up 70% of our planet's surface and yet there's no comprehensive framework to govern things like resource extraction and conservation in the high seas. In this episode, we discuss a deal that has been on the United Nations' table for over 20 years and needs an agreement on how to protect and manage areas beyond national jurisdiction. Will the deal make richer countries richer and the poorer poorer? Can we agree on how to govern our seas? He grew up in Pottsville, just down the road from Muhammad Ali's Deer Lake training camp and he was around The Greatest for the best part of a decade. As a coach, who was in the corner the night Mike Tyson was stunned by Buster Dougles, and when Frankie Randall shocked Julio Cesar Chavez.
