Hope Over Fear: DEIB Leadership in a Testy Climate

The Nonprofit Show

In a conversation as timely as it is timeless, we welcome Gordon Sims, Director of Development at the Diversity Center of Northeast Ohio, to explore how nonprofits can sustain their commitment to DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging) amid increasing societal and political scrutiny. Joined by cohosts Wendy F. Adams and Julia Patrick, this dialogue doesn't flinch from the complex realities of today's climate—but it also doesn't surrender to them.Gordon traces the DEIB movement's lineage back nearly a century, when Catholics and Jews united to counter hate, showing that “this movement and this work is far bigger than this political cycle.” His words remind us that while terminology and tactics may shift, the core intention remains: equal access, safety, and dignity for all. "The intent really was never to create preferential treatment for anyone,” he says, “but to just give equal treatment and opportunities."This conversation acknowledges how the DEIB landscape has been reshaped by fear, legislation, and misinformation. Yet it offers clarity and resolve. Gordon uses a poignant metaphor comparing DEIB to theme park "fast passes," where historically marginalized communities have been left to wait in line while others bypassed them. DEIB, he emphasizes, is about giving everyone the opportunity to get on the ride—no more, no less.Equally compelling is the discussion around strategy. Gordon highlights the importance of language, framing, and tone when approaching these issues, especially in environments where such topics are misunderstood or even banned. “Sometimes we have to choose between being right and being strategic,” he shares, quoting trainer Erica Merritt. The challenge lies in advancing the work without triggering defensiveness or political backlash.Ultimately, this episode is about courage, compassion, and connection. It's about listening deeply, creating safe spaces, and convening in strength. Whether it's through roundtables with LGBTQ centers, school districts, or town hall-style block parties, Gordon and his team are modeling how collaboration itself becomes a form of resilience. For those unsure how to proceed or afraid to speak, this episode provides a framework not just for advocacy, but for hope.00:00:00 Welcome and introductions00:03:11 History of the Diversity Center and DEIB origins00:05:35 The movement cycle and current contraction00:07:35 DEIB as equal access—not preferential treatment00:09:53 What DEIB looks like in real life today00:12:11 Convening as a form of resilience00:14:43 Creating safe spaces and actionable strategies00:17:03 Legislative engagement and civic action00:19:03 Navigating DEIB within family and social dynamics00:22:30 Strategic language and meeting people where they are00:26:01 Being strategic vs. being right00:28:37 Data-driven proof of DEIB's value#InclusiveLeadership #NonprofitStrategy #CivicEngagementFind us Live daily on YouTube!Find us Live daily on LinkedIn!Find us Live daily on X: @Nonprofit_ShowOur national co-hosts and amazing guests discuss management, money and missions of nonprofits! 12:30pm ET 11:30am CT 10:30am MT 9:30am PTSend us your ideas for Show Guests or Topics: HelpDesk@AmericanNonprofitAcademy.comVisit us on the web:The Nonprofit Show

This sparkling conversation addresses the enduring and evolving challenges of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB). Gordon Sims, Director of Development at the Diversity Center of Northeast Ohio, joined host Julia Patrick. Gordon begins with illuminating the organization's nearly century-long history, rooted in combating hate and fostering inclusivity since its founding in 1927.Reflecting on the origins of the Diversity Center, Gordon shares, “For 97 years, this organization has been fighting the forces of violence and exclusion.” He elaborates on how the mission has adapted to societal changes, emphasizing how DEIB practices today are about acceptance and creating workplaces that reflect diverse communities.Amidst national debates surrounding DEIB, Gordon encourages reframing conversations: “Diversity doesn't have to be about social justice—it's about acceptance and embracing people for who they are.” With a focus on transparency and education, the center actively involves donors, hosts transformative events, and builds bridges across generations. The conversation between these two will give you a hopeful outlook toward engaging unity and open communication as a pathway to overcoming DEIB challenges. #DEIB #NonprofitLeadership #DiversityMattersFind us Live daily on YouTube!Find us Live daily on LinkedIn!Find us Live daily on X: @Nonprofit_ShowOur national co-hosts and amazing guests discuss management, money and missions of nonprofits! 12:30pm ET 11:30am CT 10:30am MT 9:30am PTSend us your ideas for Show Guests or Topics: HelpDesk@AmericanNonprofitAcademy.comVisit us on the web:The Nonprofit Show

Azadeh and her team drive growth beyond insurance to develop new ideas, products, and services that help these people.Azadeh joined Progressive in 2015 as a Director where she led the user experience strategy and design for several large-scale digital customer initiates; introduced product design tools and internal processes to Progressive; and grew the team to include digital product strategy, design, copywriting, and analytics. Before joining Progressive, Azadeh was a founding member of mPortal, a start-up technology company that focused on a single idea: people will want to use data on phones (note: seven years before the iPhone was introduced).  As part of the founding team, she wore many hats including operations, product management, business development, and marketing as she helped grow mPortal into a profitable company in less than three years and worked on product strategy for companies such as Verizon, Disney, ESPN, Time Warner, Comcast, Reliance, and Telus. In addition to her work at Progressive and Level20, Azadeh, who's based in Shaker Heights with her husband and three children, has served in leadership roles on several nonprofit boards and is currently on the Board of The Diversity Center of Northeast Ohio and President of the UVA Alumni Club for Northeast Ohio.In our conversation today, we peel back the curtain on what "intrapreneurship" looks like, comparing and contrasting what it's like to build a traditional startup vs. innovating from within a large corporate organization, the kinds of initiatives Level20 has taken on thus far and the work still to be done — from home maintenance to flexible term life insurance, to financial wellness offerings, their presence here in Cleveland, her reflections on leadership and growth, and a whole lot more.-----SPONSORS: John Carroll University Boler College of Business || Impact Architects & NinetyJohn Carroll University Boler College of Business: https://business.jcu.edu/ As we've heard time and time again from entrepreneurs on Lay of The Land — many of whom are proud alumni of John Carroll University —  success in this ever-changing world of business requires a dynamic and innovative mindset, deep understanding of emerging technology and systems, strong ethics, leadership prowess, acute business acumen… all qualities nurtured through the Boler College of Business! With 4 different MBA programs of study — spanning Professional, Online, Hybrid, and 1-Year-Flexible — The Boler College of Business provides flexible timelines and various class structures for each MBA Track — including online, in-person, hybrid and asynchronous — to offer the most effective options for you, in addition to the ability to participate in an elective International Study Tour, providing unparalleled opportunities to expand your global business knowledge by networking with local companies overseas and experiencing a new culture. The career impact of a Boler MBA is formative and will help prepare you for this future of business and get more out of your career. What significance does the month of February hold for you? In the U.S., this is a time to acknowledge and celebrate Black history. No matter what cultural background you identify with, Black History Month holds significance in what it represents for this country as well as what it causes us to consider. To view the full show notes, continue reading here or visit my website: www.heartfelthippie@gmail.com Black male identity development - it's a bit of a mouthful, but it's an important topic in today's world. There are massive disparities and gaps in the achievements of racial subgroups in America, particularly when we look at college attendance and completion. Enter Justin! Justin Rose is the Director of the Diversity Center at the University of Illinois Springfield and also has the personal experience of being a minority student in college to draw from. Justin is not only doing amazing work on his current campus, but he is also working on his PhD in Higher Education so that he can continue making an impact on the lives of college students. Justin and I met while in school together, and I have always appreciated his welcoming attitude that has made me feel comfortable in sharing my thoughts and opinions. I think you'll be able to tell exactly what I'm talking about when you hear Justin speak in this episode! In today's conversation, Justin addresses some stereotypes surrounding Black males and also talks about the challenges faced in both getting to college as well as staying in college. Even if you are not involved in a higher education sector like Justin and I, you are going to hear how you can make a difference when we look at some of these disparities that exist for minority groups. Justin makes clear that we have the choice between being a part of the problem or being a part of the solution. This is a societal issue, not one that's specific to one group of people, and we all hold power to make a difference! You are truly going to be enlightened in this conversation and probably hear some things that you've never thought of before. Perhaps you've never considered why Black History Month is significant, or what the point of Affirmative Action is! My hope is that after today, your mind will be racing. We all have value to contribute to this society, and it's time that we decrease the achievement gaps that separate us and prevent us from putting forth our assets. Also, you're going to love Justin's personality and wish that you could get a motivational pep talk from him every day. Family Confidential: Secrets of Successful Parenting with Annie Fox, M.Ed.

We label people we don't understand. We label people we fear. We label people we have written off as not being worthy of our time or friendship. Labeling people makes them easier to hate. Labeling people can trick us into believing that our hate is justified. The Diversity Center of Northeastern Ohio is a human relations organization dedicated to eliminating bias, bigotry, and racism. Today's podcast is about The Center and its new film, #RethinkLabels, which brings more awareness to the way we use labels to describe other people. Please watch the powerful, 4 minute #RethinkLabels film produced by Goldfarb Weber Creative Media for The Diversity Center. https://youtu.be/0WJlDvNzNN0 Share it with your children. Discuss it. Listen to what your kids have to say about labels. Have a look at a two-day lesson plan for reducing bias and stereotypes in the classroom. Together we can help build communities where all people are connected, respected, and valued. About The Diversity Center (@Diversity_NEO) The Diversity Center's story beings in 1927, when leaders from different faiths met in Cleveland in response to organized campaigns of hatred spreading across America. Today, through ongoing programs for young people and adults, it carries out its mission to build communities where all people are connected, respected, and valued. Annie speaks with Tony Weber, CEO of Goldfarb Weber Creative Media, about the making of #ReThinkLabels and the role we all have in making our communities more equitable places for everyone.
