And Maggie is so perplexed by all the kinks the writers have to work out with the female characters on this show.

Marching in support of besieged Palestinian civilians is not antisemitic. Calling for a ceasefire is not antisemitic. Denouncing Israel's far-right government is not antisemitic. But blaming ordinary Jewish people in Canada for the military actions of a foreign government is antisemitic. It is also antisemitic.. to suggest that Jewish people in Canada have no right to their fears because thousands of innocents are dying in Gaza." Emma Teitel writing for the Toronto Star. Pierre Poilievre did not have a good week. He ordered his caucus to vote against the update of a free trade deal with Ukraine - claimed it had something to do with his favourite political football that he can't stop kicking - the carbon tax...every conservative must swear allegiance to being opposed to the carbon tax even when the bill they are voting is as connected to the carbon tax as the Israel Hamas war is connected to pineapple juice...So Poilievre wasn't having a week trying to justify denying aid to Ukraine ....made him look like just a putrid Putin hand puppet and then there was the car accident on the American side of Niagara Falls. It happened during Question Period in the Commons and Poilievre insisted it was terrorism. Why does Fox say so? The following day when a Canadian Press journalist asked him about jumping the gun, he jumped on the journalist the way a sugar addict jumps on a bag of Reeses Pieces. Poilievre looked like a bully, like a jerk, like an insecure little man. Hard to believe that much insecurity in a person whose party is leading the governing Liberals by double digits. Poilievre's corps of sycophants is focused on media coverage of Poilievre's terrible week by claiming the media dogpiling dear leader because the government is subsidizing media and so the media hounds are gratefully licking their master. My master is the clock. My time is up.

The Think Inc. Podcast

Poo transplants, an astronomer makes a huge mistake, Brian Greene says he wants to chat with aliens, effective altruism for dummies, and is Putin the new Hitler?POO TRANSPLANTSPoo transplants. That's all.Yes, they sound gross, but if you've got a peanut allergy, maybe you'll want to try one. Recently a small study was done on adults with severe peanut allergies. By giving them “crapsules” filled with poop from other people, the allergy sufferers were able to better tolerate those pesky nuts by the end of the trial. To celebrate, the participants were given Reeses Pieces. Nah.. I made that part up.And if you didn't think that was good enough, faecal transplants may even help with bipolar disorder and depression! Other recent studies have found that patients given crapsules from happier donors resulted in many of their symptoms going away. Why? Well scientists aren't 100% sure, but the link between our brain and our gut microbiome is only getting stronger.Only time will tell whether poo transplants are the real deal, or just a load of crap.BLACK HOLEIn 2020 Thomas Rivinus and his team were over the moon (excuse the pun) when they discovered a black hole just 1,000 light-years from Earth - pretty much in our cosmic backyard. The discovery caused headlines, because previously the closest blackhole was over 3,000 light-years away. But soon astronomers were doing what science does so well - criticising the findings and seeing if there were other plausible explanations.A team from Belgium started picking holes in Thomas' theory, and found out that he wasn't using the best telescope for the job. After the initial awkwardness and sleepless nights that Thomas had, thinking his discovery might be proven incorrect in front of the whole world, Thomas and the Belgian team decided to work together to get to the truth. And guess what, Thomas and his Chilean team were WRONG - it wasn't a blackhole! It was light caused by one star slowly consuming a star next to it as a sort of star snack! This story shows something so remarkable about science - there's no room for confirmation bias. If a theory is incorrect, there's no way to hide it, and scientists can't take that personally. If only the whole world worked like that, we wouldn't have so many problems. Do you agree? Let us know in the comments.UKRAINEIs Putin the new Hitler?Peter Singer is best known for his groundbreaking work in the animal welfare and effective altruism movements. But Peter is a moral philosopher who'ss written on a huge number of political and philosphical topics, and the ethics of war and genocide is something close to home, as he's the son of Austrian Jewish refugees who escaped Nazi Europe. That's why Peter's recent article on the Ukraine-Russia war is so insightful. In it he compares Putin's actions to those of Hitler when he threatened to invade Czechoslovakia during World War 2 while other European nations watched on and didn't act.Peter applies his utilitarian ethics in arguing that, even though strict sanctions will hurt kind Russians who are against the war, they're the only way to stop Putin. You're invited to come and speak with Peter about ethics at our events in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane over the next month. Buy your tickets at the link in our bio.ALIENSWould things get violent if we met aliens?Brian Greene thinks there's a chance of that, judging by our history, but that doesn't mean he wouldn't like us to meet aliens and compare notes on everything they know about our universe.Brian is ridiculously excited about the James Webb telescope and everything it's going to tell us about the history of our universe, and whether there could be other forms of intelligent life out there. And there's PLENTY of room for it. Scientists now predict there's about one planet per star, so that means there are hundreds of billions of planets in our universe, but does Brian think there's life on them?Eh, he's doubtful, but doesn't rule it out completely. He says it's pretty unlikely that humans are the MOST intelligent beings around, so why wouldn't other beings make themselves known? If other beings are so advanced, surely we'd know about it if they did exist.Or maybe there's different forms of living or consciousness that we can't perceive? He doesn't rule that out.If you're a space nerd, don't miss out on meeting Brian at our tour in June this year. Join us across Australia and New Zealand, or at our Virtual Event if you live overseas or on a different planet! Tickets are at the link in our bio.EFEECTIVE ALTRIUSMWe all have one mate who says “we need to overthrow the government to make change! It's the only way!” ... or maybe I'm hanging out with the wrong people…But suffice to say, everyone thinks bigger is better when it comes to making positive changes. But often people don't have a concrete plan in place of how that change would actually be made. Ok … replace evil capitalism, but with what!? How? When? These are all questions that effective altruists take very seriously. Effective altruism is sometimes criticised for focusing on helping individuals, when bigger governmental changes would be better. But effective altruism is not for dreamers, it's about focusing on issues that can actually be solved, and often small individual changes are way easier than getting the whole government or system to change.Listen to Peter Singer respond to this common criticism of effective altruism, and if you want to know more, come meet Peter at our show at the end of the month - tickets are at the link in our bio.-----That's all for this week, hopefully we will see you at our Peter Singer event at the end of the month! C'mon. Couldn't not use that line. It writes itself. It's a banner week here on the podcast as A.J. Andrews gets to talk about another one of her favorite subjects: the genitals of Blue Jays players! Specifically Reese McGuire's genitals as the Toronto catcher was arrested for exposing himself in an SUV in Dunedin. Andrews treads lightly, given the lack of information about the situation, and the incredible vagueness of Florida's indecent exposure laws, but she does her best to not go nuts about things. She also compares the situation to Auston Matthews' Arizona moon the previous summer, and whether or not that will dictate any possible suspension for McGuire. Also, the podcast she planned to do, taking about Kevin Pillar signing with the Red Sox and Eric Pardinho's Tommy John surgery, that happens too. Find out how to pronounce Reese's Pieces and how "E.T" made the candy an overnight success. Learn the Shat Crew's bloody history with animal dissections, and debate whether an alien visiting Earth is more likely to be a miracle messiah or a Typhoid Mary. Gene Lyons praises "E.T." for being secretly spooky, while Roger Roeper and Big D examine the possibly racist undertones of the 1980s Halloween costumes. We'll also cover why E.T.'s has the voice of a chain-smoking woman, whether the alien's design was brilliant artistry or cheap chupacabra, and how Steven Spielberg beat his own box office record when he made "Jurassic Park." How much would you pay for a Reese's Pieces package, half-eaten by Charles Manson during a prison visit in 2002? What about Ed Gein's scalpel? We hope that by the end of this disturbing episode your answer will be a resounding, “No thank you – my collection of Beanie Babies will suffice.” In this episode, we discuss Andy Kahan and his quest to stop killers from profiting from their hideous acts of violence and resulting notoriety. We go over which killers are the top sellers and why, as well as why Son of Sam Laws haven’t historically held up in the Supreme Court. Side note: In this episode, Molly refers to Sharon Tate as Manson’s “main victim,” when she meant that she was his most famous and talked-about victim. We don't want to diminish the murders of Voytek Frykowski, Steven Parent, Jay Sebring, Abigail Folger, Steve Parent, Gary Hinman, and Leno and Rosemary LaBianca. This episode existed somewhere between a lengthy work marathon, an Aquaman showing and was 3 fueled by coffee and Reese's Pieces. Splish splash, it's Aquaman time. Which is the kind of catchphrase that kept him from getting cool all those years. I can't say how much of a relief it is for this movie to not have sucked. I mean, I loved it, but that was probably going to happen anyway. I'm just glad critically (and not just in China) it's being loved. Aquaman gives us the Geoff Johns New 52 run but with some really great additions. It takes characters seriously that could have been jokey, and it has surprisingly tight fight scenes right off the bat AquaDrago is back in full force, and despite playing the same character as always, Jason makes it work. Set aside your worries that he'll be "woohoo-ing" out of airplanes the whole film. Momoa's Aquaman is a fine mix of lighthearted jokes and swagger (so, the Thor recipe pretty much). The cast of the movie are fantastic, the art style and effects are great and super pleasing. And the big one for me actually was the spatial awareness the movie gave the audience. Despite being underwater and often capturing huge moments of battle or wonder, the movie never allows the viewer to be lost in the chaos, and always seems to provide grounding shots to give context to where action is happening and the scale of it. Also check out the shared universe that the DCU and the Conjuring now exist in. I'd like to think that John Constantine will be showing up in later Conjuring movies to teach the Warrens how to banish daemons and such. Everything else is in there folks, give it a listen and let me know what you think!

Steven Spielberg's blockbuster "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" has been a part of the world's consciousness since it debuted in 1982, but when you take off those nostalgia goggles and look at it with fresh eyes, you'll realize it's nothing more than a story about a boy and his dog, a horror movie aimed at kids, and, strangely, a story with strong Jesus Christ parallels. This movie gave us many things: Reese's Pieces (one of the dozens of product placements in this), Drew Barrymore, the Amblin logo, and, of course, "Mac and Me."  Henry Thomas plays the main character, a child named Elliott, who creepily gets taken over by an alien botanist who was left behind on Earth by his species. Elliott enjoys not dissecting frogs, screaming, and being mentally brainwashed by a beer-drinking, Speak-&-Spell-ing, wax-candy-eating monster.  Dee Wallace plays Elliott's frazzled single mother, who is falling apart because her husband recently left her and then took off to Mexico with some woman. Her likes include: barely miss seeing E.T. at every step, dressing up as a sexy cat, and leaving children unattended. Her dislikes include: Mexico, pizza, and kids showing up minutes late of their vague curfews.  Robert MacNaughton plays Elliot's older brother, Michael, who looks like a mix of Charlie Bucket, Eddie Haskell and Steve Buscemi. He helps Elliott hide E.T. and heroically aides in his ultimate survival and homecoming. Michael loves Dungeons & Dragons, Space Invaders, yet also plays on the football team. A real Renaissance Man.  Drew Barrymore plays Elliott's little sister, Gertie, who says cute things, teaches E.T. to talk, and agrees to allow E.T. to take her place while they pretend to go trick-or-treating.  And Peter Coyote plays an unnamed (and mostly unseen) government official who is hunting E.T. and has a bunch of keys attached to his belt.  Join us as we dive deep into all the product placement in this movie, discuss Spielberg's daddy issues and really dissect this whole "E.T. is Jesus" thing. On this episode we have...well, bears...and more bears. We have some stories from Reddit. If you didn't know we typically get questions from Yahoo! Answers, but have found better ones on Reddit. As for actual topics, Honch kicks us off with a story of a bear. This bear was at a zoo in Alberta, Canada...and well, he was behaving so well that his zookeepers decided to take him out for ice cream. Ironically, unlike most stories that we do, this bear did nothing wrong...he just enoyed his soft serve ice cream, or Blizzard, or whatever a bear eats from an ice cream shop. Did you know that the British accent is something fabricated by people? This was not verified by any news sources..but we decided it is fact. Can someone do the fact checking on this one? After getting off topic...we get even more off topic and we're back on the Laurel and Yanny bandwagon. Stemming from our bonus episode (the one between last week and this week, we still hand to bring it up. Apparently we can't let it go. Once we talk about the first bear story, Jethrow jumps into company slogans. What slogans that works for one company...wouldn't translate well to others? Honch tought that the "I'm Lovin' It" for McDonald's wouldn't translate well for Pepto. And fun fact for your day, Captain Crunch doesn't have razor blades in it...the cereal just cuts your mouth up. After going who knows where on the topic train, we had another bear story. This time...a woman in China bought what she thought was a Mastiff, but after 2 years of raising it, it turned out to be an endangered Black Bear....and I re-iterate, 2 YEARS to discover that this 440 pound puppy was a bear. After talking about the giant puppy Bear, we dove into a question from the Internet. What is something stupid that you've done, but in news headline format? As it turns out, we've done some pretty stupid stuff...and likely what you would classify as a fail, including Jethrow throwing pizza...pepperoni down at someone's windshield. Not by the slice..the entire pizza.

No, Brendan Fraser isn't in this one.  And no, Kurt Russell isn't in it either.  So it must be a pretty great movie if neither of those dudes are needed to buoy it up.  And hey!  What do you know?  It's just one of the greatest film classics of all time: Steven Spielberg's love letter to alien life, E.T. The Extra Terrestrial!  This is the incredible story of a boy named Elliott and his deep connection to an alien being that has accidentally been left behind by their spaceship.  This movie was such a phenomenon that it singlehandedly made Reese's Pieces a popular candy and Drew Barrymore a household name.  So much of this movie has permeated popular culture: E.T. phone home, the bike flying past the moon, the glowing fingertip.  But ask yourself this question...when was the last time you actually watched E.T. from beginning to end?  This was the question our hosts had to ask themselves...and then answer by watching and discussing it on this week's show.  So join us and find out...does E.T. live up to all the hype?  And don't forget to RATE, REVIEW & SUBSCRIBE!

We continue our journey through John Williams' score to E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial by focusing on the many additional themes that populate the film. While perhaps best remembered for the themes featured in last week's episode (Flying theme, the Call), E.T. contains a wealth and diversity of iconic music. Remarkably, the majority of the thematic material emphasizes an important melodic gesture - the ascending perfect fifth. We explore how masterfully Williams distinguishes these disparate motives while simultaneously binding them together in the narrative fabric of the underscore. We endeavor to name the many iconic melodies that recur throughout the film; 'Danger', 'Friendship', 'Mystery', 'Searching', 'E.T.'s Antics', 'Earth', 'Awe', 'Goodbye' and 'Triumph'. Swimming through this rich #moviemusic has been an absolute pleasure. Ready the Reese's Pieces and enjoy!Listen to episode 5m2 Additional Themes from E.T.E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial - John Williams - 1982 - Universal Pictures (Steven Spielberg, dir,)Extra-Terrestrial (The 20th Anniversary) Original Motion Picture Soundtrackhttps://itunes.apple.com/us/album/e-t-the-extra-terrestrial-the-20th-anniversary/id1951771IMDBhttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083866/E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial in Concerthttp://filmconcertslive.com/movies/e-t-extra-terrestrial/■ ■ ■For score reductions, additional links and more, the discussion continues at: www.underscorepodcast.com---------------------------------------------------------------------to support the show, please visit www.patreon.com/underscorepodcast

What we thought would be a narrow topic to research turned into a fascinating discussion on different techniques marketers and advertisers have used to get their brands noticed in popular television, movies, music, and even books. We get into the history and usage of this technique today, since we're constantly bombarded with seemingly innocent ads. Pull up a chair, chillin, and lend an ear. I am really excited. I have just found out that I am intimately involved in one of the worlds' biggest bad decisions. Now there are different levels of very bad decisions. If you are a very curvy young lady, taking accordion lessons would be a very bad decision. A different level bad decision was when the Japanese decided to bomb Pearl Harbor, although all our aircraft carriers were out to sea. That was a very bad decision. Taking a bite out of that apple was a bad decision on Adam's part. When the Red Sox sold Babe Ruth's contract to the Yankees, that was also a bad decision, as was the 1971 trade that brought Jim Fregosi to the Mets for a pitcher. A pitcher by the name of Nolan Ryan. Big Louie, his own bad self, the star of my book Staying Happy Healthy And Hot says, "Giving another man the opportunity to make your woman smile is a very bad decision. Very bad." 12 publishers made the very bad decision to turn down "Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone." Big bad decisions. NBC and CBS were the NFL's choices for the rights to Monday Night Football. They both declined. Bad, bad, bad decision. ABC really cleaned up on that one. M&Ms passed up Steven Speilberg's request to use their candy in his movie, "ET." Reese's Pieces grabbed the chance and their sales immediately increased by 65%. Not smart, M&Ms. Bad decision. Napoleon decided to invade Russia in the winter. Very, very bad decision. The Trojans decided to accept that big wooden horse the Greeks made for them as a present. Whoops. Columbus landed in the Indies, thought he was in India, and figured he'd drop in on the guys he thought were Indians. Bad mistake for Columbus, very bad decision by the Indians. And I just found out the other night that I was intimately involved in a decision that was at least comparable to some of these, big bad decisions. I am now, Big, Bad, Boo-Boo Daddy.
