My guest today worked for Club Med from 2003 to 2008. Her first season was in Club Med Sandpiper in 2003 as a Mini Club G.O. She also worked in the Club Med resorts of Ixtapa, Punta Cana, La Caravelle, Hammamet in Tunisia and my favorite village, Lindeman Island in Australia. In her life after Club Med, she obtained a law degree from Bond University in Queensland, Australia and she is a Diplomat with the Canadian government. She is currently accredited as the First Secretary of Canada to the Republic of Turkey. That's right Seasoners, you heard me, she is the first Diplomat to be on My First Season! The level of sophistication on this podcast just went through the roof!! From Alberta, Canada, please help me welcome, Meagan Dalby! In this episode, we cover Meagan's villages and her journey from law school to Diplomat. Meagan also lets us know if her employment at Club Med helped her in her current career as a Diplomat. You will not want to miss this one and please enjoy! **My First Season podcast has always been ad-free and free to listen to and is available to download on: Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Samsung Podcasts, Podbean App, Podchaser, Spotify, Amazon Music/Audible, TuneIn + Alexa, iHeartRadio, PlayerFM, Pandora and Listen Notes. As any fan of "The Sopranos" knows, mobsters love good food almost as much as they relish ill-gotten money. No wonder organized crime is constantly rumored to be intertwined with the restaurant business. For veterans of New York City, those insinuations are far from fanciful. Long-timers know the dining landmarks where Mafioso kingpins were whacked after a meal, and where you have to be careful not to kick fellow guests in the ankle lest you set off their back-up guns. A line of black limos outside means you don't tell Italian jokes while waiting for a table, and the men's dress code might include a pinky ring. If there were any doubts of a connection between cooks and capos, they were dashed a few years ago when once-celebrated chef David Ruggerio came clean on his involvement with the mob. While earning stellar reviews for his fare at New York's La Caravelle, the second cousin to famed gangster Carlo Gambino pursued a second life as a goodfella, hijacking trucks, shaking down other crooks and dealing drugs. He eventually left the business to avoid jail time, and decided to air his criminal past after several partners in crime were killed and he was disrespected by a godfather of sorts. It's an incredible story, and you can learn it by hitting Play on this week's episode of Restaurant Rewind, the podcast that looks back at often-forgotten nuggets from the industry's past. Listen this week for a snapshot of how a real wise guy made it in the business.
My guest today is so far only the second Gestionnaire to appear on the My First Season podcast. He went to Club Med three times as a G.M. in the late 80s to Martinique, La Caravelle, and St. Lucia and that lit the spark for him to apply. He worked for Club Med from 1988 to 2000 and his first season was in Club Med Playa Blanca as a Cashier. He has a degree in Marketing from Fordham University, and he met his future wife in 1993 in Club Med Huatulco and has been married 27 years now. From New York, please help me welcome, Kevin Klein! Kevin worked in villages such as Sonora Bay, Moorea, Phuket, Zinal, and Bali, to name but a few. Despite his Marketing background, Kevin did not want to work in the office, but on the beach or doing Landsports! But alas, some do not get their first choice, so from cashier, he went to Aide Gestion, Gestion, and one season as a Personnel Manager. He worked with a wide array of Managers such as Denis Amsellem, Lefis, Arlette Gilles, and previous MFS guests, Mike Coltman, Howard McCarley, and Carlos Castro. Since I love a good “In Couple” story, Kevin shares the story of how he met his future wife, the very funny proposal story that comes with it, and caps it off by getting married in a three hundred and fifty-year-old Mexican church! During his first season in Playa Blanca in 1988, Kevin helped Bob Christians set up the trapeze rig! We end the interview with Kevin telling us who he enjoyed working with and the many, many recurring dreams he still has to this day about Club Med. Enjoy! My guest today kept posting one amazing photo after another on the various EXGO Facebook sites, that I asked him if he would agree to come on and share his story. His first season was in 1979 in Club Med Martinique as a Snorkeling/Picnic G.O. From NYC but now living in beautiful Arizona, please help me welcome Gary Sirota!! Gary worked for Club Med from 1979 to 1989 with a few various stints here and there after that. He worked in such villages as La Caravelle, Paradise Island, Copper Mountain, Magic Isle, Cancun, Sandpiper, Eilat, St.Moritz, Vittel and Moorea. Serge Trigano interviewed a seventeen and half years old Gary in New York City when he applied (no pressure, right?!), and he was sent to Martinique not soon after. Gary has very vivid memories of his time in Club Med, so if you were an early 80s G.O. or want to know what Club Med was like back them, then this interview is for you!! In Magic Isle alone, Gary met David Lee Roth, Pat Benatar and Bob Guccione along with some Penthouse playmates. Gary eventually became a Bar G.O and then Chef de Bar and has one amazing story after the next!! He mentions a lot of names from the past and the three things he misses the most about Club Med. Please enjoy! **My First Season podcast has always been free to listen to and is available on: Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Samsung Podcasts, Podbean App, Spotify, Amazon Music/Audible, TuneIn + Alexa, iHeartRadio, PlayerFM, Pandora and Listen Notes. Rita Jammet was born in Saudi Arabia to parents of Iraqi origin, she went to boarding school in Lebanon and Switzerland, married André Jammet, a French man and ended up living in New York. She has led an exotic and charmed life as the co-owner of the acclaimed La Caravelle restaurant for 20 years, as the proprietor of La Caravelle Champagnes / Wines, and as the mother of three accomplished sons (one of whom is the cofounder of Sweet Green). It's frankly no surprise she's now known as the Chief Bubble Officer of her company, and if New York were to have an ambassador of hospitality, it would be her. She talked to me about her childhood in Saudi and Lebanon, about moving to Switzerland and her honeymoon to the US. She is a very charismatic lady who you would want to listen to forever. Rita is a member of Les Dames d'Escoffier NY. She was awarded the Order of Agricultural Merit by France's Ministry of Agriculture and Food. She is also a board member of the New York State Restaurant Association, Manhattan Chapter. Books That Make You Sizzle With A Romantic Summer in 70s New York, with Dave Ruggerio Booklovers love beach season: a special time to escape into other worlds, or a steamy affair. This year, author David Ruggerio offers a new addition to our beach-bound bookbag, with his novel “Say Goodbye and Goodnight.” As a popular chef-turned-writer, David is known for the acclaimed horror novel “A Wistful Tale of Gods, Men and Monsters.” With his new release, however, he switches gears. “Goodbye and Goodnight”, set during the 70s disco period in Brooklyn, tells the story of a young fighter on the verge of success who encounters an extraordinary love. Only question: will it last? David Ruggerio began as a chef at the famed New York eatery, La Caravelle, then developed his culinary skills in France at several of the country's leading restaurants. He went on to host his own PBS cooking show, become a renowned New York chef, and cook for five US Presidents. He’s written two popular cookbooks, “Little Italy with David Ruggerio,” and “David Ruggerio's Italian Kitchen.” He’s appeared at the LA BookFest to share cooking wisdom. Welcome to another episode of Exploring the Wine Glass. In early March, there was an incredible event happening in New York City, called Strong Women Make Big Bordeaux Bottles and I was privileged to have been invited to attend. The massive on taking involved 65 of New York’s top restaurants & wine bars celebrating women in winemaking, with a limited selection of Bordeaux wines-by-the-glass all poured from double magnum bottles. Unfortunately, I had hip surgery the previous week and was unable to attend. But thanks to the hard work of Stefanie Schwalb of Gregory and Vine, I was able to interview three of these amazing women. We talk about male vs female roles and views in the wine industry, the romance of pouring from large format, what it’s like living and working in an industry that has such a long tradition and the feeling you get when you see someone enjoying the fruits of your labor. How yummy is a horror novel? One that hits the flavors of the genre and leaves you feeling oh-so-satisfied? Are you picking up the food references here? Not so subtle, am I? There’s a reason for that, because our guest today not only wrote a tasty scary book, but he is also a renowned celebrity chef and a man of many, many talents and creative devices. David Ruggerio wrote the book: A Wistful Tale of Gods, Men and Monsters. He is also an amazing chef, having begun his career at the legendary New York eatery, La Caravelle. He honed his culinary skills in France at several of the country's leading restaurantsand went on to host his own cooking show on PBS, was a famed chef in New York and has cooked for five US Presidents. David has written two acclaimed cookbooks which were published by Artisan books, “Little Italy with David Ruggerio,” and “David Ruggerio'sItalian Kitchen.” But today, we’re talking about A Wistful Tale, because as the leaves turn colors and the crispness of autumn fills the air, nothing is better than curling up with a scary book—am I right?

Bracha is no newcomer to the restaurant business. Having put himself through the Hotel & Restaurant Management program at NY City College by working in bagel and bread bakeries, he honed his culinary skills at La Caravelle, which was long known in New York as a “temple to French gastronomy.” Bracha then spent the next several years working under top chefs from New York to St. Thomas, which afforded him the well-rounded experiences that have brought him where he is today. Bracha made his way to South Florida in the late 1980′s where he worked with Chef Norman Van Aiken and Proal Perry at the beautiful Hoexters Market supper club and then opened the “Stars & Stripes Cafe” in the Betsy Ross Hotel. After branching out on his own at age 28 with “411″ Restaurant & Bar in South Beach, Bracha set his sights on the concept of casual upscale seafood and open the Fishbone Grill in downtown Miami & a second location in Coral Gables. Drawing from tropical setting of Miami, Bracha the opened The River Seafood & Oyster Bar, realizing it’s only natural to use the freshest seafood and produce available to create a collective menu of dishes that represents a modern twist on a classic seafood cuisine. The River consistently sources the best of the best ingredients to deliver an unparallel dining experience which has helped them win over locals, tourists and critics alike.
