Balancing Life With Cancer: Creating Boundaries for Patients, Caregivers and Loved Ones “Daring to set boundaries is about having the courage to love ourselves, even when we risk disappointing others.” -Brené Brown It's often challenging to focus inward when it comes to priorities. From family to work to friends, and even pets, it is all too easy to put ourselves on the back burner. Yet research shows there is great importance—and benefits—to putting ourselves first when it comes to our physical and mental health. Setting personal boundaries and priorities are practices that include changing our mindset about not only what we say “no” to, but also “yes.” This month, we welcome back licensed clinical social worker, Roslyn Turner, to discuss how to set clear boundaries for ourselves and others. Whether you've been diagnosed with cancer, are a caregiver, or are supporting a loved one with cancer, setting boundaries can help all involved. Roslyn will share: · What creating boundaries look like, and why its an important habit · Tips to setting boundaries with family, friends and work · How to say “no” so you can focus on what really matters About the Speaker: Roslyn Turner, LCSW (Outpatient Oncology Social Worker) Roslyn Turner is a licensed clinical social worker with Illness Navigation Resources. She received her bachelor's degree in communication from Lake Forest College and her master's degree in social work from Loyola University Chicago. While her specialization is working with patients and their families dealing with a cancer diagnosis, she is passionate about helping all individuals facing medical challenges and more general life stressors and transitions. Her focus is helping individuals and caregivers navigate the complex practical and emotional concerns that come with a medical diagnosis and has extensive knowledge of additional resources for oncology patients and families. Sally Wolf's life took a sharp turn when she was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. She stepped away from her role as a media executive and her new mission in life was to inspire others. She talks with Dr. Springer about her time at Harvard, her diagnosis, and taking pleasure in the simple things, like being an “auntie” to her nephew and nieces. For Sally Wolf, there's always something special when you look for it, even on the most challenging days. A quick note of caution that content in this episode may be sensitive to some listeners.

Diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in her late 30s, and determined to find meaning in the loss of good health, Teva Harrison began documenting her thoughts and feelings through essays and comic illustrations. The result was "In Between Days: A Memoir About Living with Cancer." In 2016, she spoke with Steve Paikin about her diagnosis and her optimistic approach to living what was left of her life. Sadly, she died just three years later. Her final book, "Not One of These Poems Is About You," chronicled living with the disease as she prepared her loved ones for her death. In 2020, Harrison's husband, David Leonard talked about his life by her side as she fought cancer, and the reality of working through the loss of his life companion. What would you do if you were told you had just 20 years to live? That was exactly what was told to Casey White. In 2010, just after graduating college, doctors discovered a Grade 2 Brain Tumor on the left side of Casey's brain. Instead of letting this news define him, it motivated him to take life into his own hands and build something beautiful with it. Kelly Collins is a holistic cancer coach with Beat Cancer, and she is the founder of My Vibe Life. She has a BA in Economics and Political Science from The University of Arizona, and an MBA in Business Administration from Pepperdine University. Through her 25 years in corporate America, Kelly found herself an exhausted road warrior with numerous health challenges. After growing frustrated with the medical community telling her she was fine when she knew she wasn't, she decided to try naturopathic medicine and acupuncture. Through these things, and after eliminating all inflammatory items from her diet, Kelly not only got her health back, she was vibrant once again. She furthered her education through the Institute of Integrative Nutrition and helped her father on his journey with Non-Hodgkin's CNS lymphoma. Today she is empowering cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers to take control of their healing path by educating them about wellness and recovery through lifestyle change that is centered on specific nutrition, supplementation, and certain alternative therapies and modalities. Kelly also believes on focusing on people as a whole – body, mind, and spirit. Listen to this podcast to learn about how you can live a vibrant life with a cancer diagnosis. 2:51 Kelly tells her story and how she went to a Naturopathic doctor and found out she had low vitamin D, low vitamin B 12, mercury toxicity, hypothyroidism, severe adrenal fatigue, and GI distress. 4:37 Kelly talks about removing wheat, soy, dairy, sugar, alcohol and coffee from her diet to decrease inflammation and increase brain function. 5:32 A few months prior to her dad being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's CNS lymphoma, Kelly enrolled in the Institute of Integrative Nutrition. 6:01 Kelly learned about alkalinity and how important it was to cancer patients who are acidic. 7:30 Her father got relief for neuropathy from acupuncture. 8:13 Kelly talks about her father's heart issues stemming from chemotherapy and the return of his brain cancer. 10:02 Kelly talks about the importance of taking care of yourself when you are a caregiver. 10:56 Kelly is enthusiastic about the Bemer and how it improves oxygenation. 12:48 Kelly got certified as a holistic cancer coach and launched her website, My Vibe Life in honor of her dad in November 2019. 13:52 She agrees with Susan Silberstein that we don't need more research, we need more education. 14:58 Kelly talks about the importance of people with cancer having a choice and trusting their intuition. 16:51 Kelly states, “It's never one thing that gets us sick so it's not one thing that gets us well”. #089 — Mom Life, With Cancer: You’re Not Dead! There are two contrasting narratives around cancer: We hear stories of survivors who beat the disease. And then we hear stories of people who are on their deathbeds. In reality, there is a much greater spectrum of experience. Emily Garnett is 32 years old. She recently celebrated her fifth wedding anniversary and her son’s second birthday. She was diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer that same week. But Emily’s life didn’t stop. She is still here. She is still making dinner and taking care of her son and going to the grocery store. And she wants the world to know what it looks like to live life with cancer. Today, Emily shares her career evolution, explaining how she became an elder care lawyer and her decision to step away when her son was born. She shares the devastating experience of being diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer as a young mom and her extremely limited options for having more children. I ask Emily how she navigates the fear and the unfairness of it all, and she describes how she talks to her son about her cancer diagnosis. Listen in for insight around the opportunity Emily has found in her illness and learn more about her advocacy organization, Beyond the Pink Ribbon.
