This week, we're going all the way back to ancient Greece. We'll examine the story of Aspasia of Miletus, a woman who came to Athens around 450 BC and quickly became the talk of the town. Her name appears over and over again in writing from the time, Socrates wrote about her, Plato, Plutarch, Cicero the orator, Xenophon the historian, Athenaeus the writer, Aristophanes the comic playwright, Pericles the leader of the city-state of Athens. One woman's name was on all of their minds: Aspasia of Miletus. They loved her. They hated her. They called her a great mind, a teacher, a master of rhetoric. They called a prostitute, a cheap whore, a brothel madam. They gave her credit for writing great speeches passed on to men. They gave her credit for starting great wars, the ruin of Athens. But who was Aspasia really and why was everyone talking about her? Join me to find out! Support the show! Lois Baer Barr—a poet and fiction writer living just next door to us in Riverwoods, IL—on her new novel The Tailor's Daughter (Water's Edge Press, 2023). The Tailor's Daughter uses Barr's familial memories and prodigious research to explore the life of a Jewish immigrant family making their lives in Louisville, KY in the interwar years. Encompassing such dramatic history as the Great Depression, the Great Flood of the Ohio River in 1937, and the volunteer effort in WWII, the novel also brings us close to the quiet worries and hopes of children, parents, and grandparents. Listen to hear how a novelist turns fact into, “the truth of fiction.” Barr is also the author of the poetry chapbook, Tracks: Poems on the “L” (Finishing Line Press, 2022), which uses observations and overheard conversations from her trips on Chicago's “L” trains to make poems. Her unique project was covered by the Chicago Tribune in 2019. We hear a few poems from Tracks as well, as we get to know this fascinating writer, who just might be listening and staring Look for The Tailor's Daughter and Tracks: Poems on the “L” here at the library in our Podcast Collection. You can find out more about Lois Baer Barr on her website. Barr was a finalist for the 2019 Rita Dove Poetry Award, and has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize for her fiction and poetry. She is also the author of the chapbook Biopoesis, which won Poetica's 2013 chapbook award. Her chapbook of fiction, Lope de Vega's Daughter, was published in 2019 by Red Bird Press. Barr is professor emerita of Spanish at Lake Forest College. A note that Lois Baer Barr has no relation to our 2023 podcast guest Lisa Barr (episode 59), author of The Woman on Fire and The Goddess of Warsaw, however, Lois does have connections to (and thanks in her acknowledgements!) the Deerfield Poets group; we featured members of that group in a podcast episode (#18) back in 2018! Sometime in the mid-1780s, Jean-Baptiste Pointe DuSable, a Black man from Saint-Domingue, and his Potawatomi wife, Kitihawa, settled with their family on a swampy site near Lake Michigan called Eschecagou, “land of the wild onions.” The homestead and trading post they built on the mouth of the Chicago River, with a comfortably appointed cabin, workshop, bake house, stable, smokehouse, and more, was the first settlement on what would become the city of Chicago. Their importance was long forgotten, but in 2006, the Chicago City Council belatedly voted to amend the Municipal Code of Chicago to add DuSable as the city's official founder. Joining me in this episode is Dr. Courtney P. Joseph, Associate Professor of History and African American Studies at Lake Forest College who is writing a book titled DuSable's Diaspora: Haiti, Blackness, and Belonging in Chicago. Our theme song is Frogs Legs Rag, composed by James Scott and performed by Kevin MacLeod, licensed under Creative Commons. The mid-episode audio is: “Chicago (that Toddling Town),” written by Fred Fisher and performed by Jazz-Bo's Carolina Serenaders in 1922; the audio is in the public domain and is available via the Internet Archive. The episode image is a photograph of the bust of DuSable just north of DuSable Bridge in Chicago; the bust was created by Erik Blome in 2009; the photograph was taken by Matthew Weflen on June 17, 2023, and is used with permission. Today we are talking to Tony Guernsey, former national head of Wilmington Trust wealth management, a longtime senior banker at JP Morgan, founder of the UBS US private bank. Tony wrote an unpublished memoir called Divas, Icons, and Felons with his wisdom and great stories from his distinguished five decades managing money for many wealthy and famous clients such as Steve Jobs, Jay Chiat, and Christo. Tony was very generous to share some of them with me and it is a rare peek inside this often fascinating and eccentric world, but it also highlights the lack of education out there for those who have the responsibilities of wealth. I hope you enjoy my talk with Tony Guernsey as much as I did. BIOGRAPHY: Peter E. ”Tony” Guernsey Jr. was born and raised in Long Island, New York. He was educated at the Taft School in Watertown, CT, and Lake Forest College, in Lake Forest, Illinois. During the Vietnam War, he spent 30 months in the U.S Naval Reserve at Great Lakes Naval base in North Chicago, Illinois. Simultaneously he was an ice hockey referee and drove a taxi cab in Chicago. In 1972 Tony joined JP Morgan and over the next 43 years re-engineered or started 42 National Wealth Management offices around the U.S. for Morgan, UBS, and Wilmington Trust. Today he is a consultant and serves as an outside independent family trustee. Tony and his wife, Eve, share their lives between New York City, Bedford, New York, and Martha's Vineyard. Between the two of them, they have three children and four grandchildren. Cumulatively, the two of them worked at JP Morgan for 50 years. In 1972, Tony was a contributing author of the book, Skates, Sticks and Men, the story of American Hockey in the United States. Tony was voted All-American Division 3 in Ice Hockey in 1970 and in 2006 was awarded the esteemed Lifetime Achievement award by Private Asset Management. Wall, who comes from a family of nine, graduated from the William Penn Charter School in Philadelphia. He then moved on to Chicago, where he graduated from Lake Forest College. Wall credits his Liberal Arts education as the catalyst for his ongoing interest in existential philosophy. He spent two decades of his career in the financial services industry. He found himself always drawn back to the study of humankind. In 2019, Wall established Noēsis. Courtney Wright didn't expect to be a leader, but she has distinguished herself with both grit and grace. With supportive parents who told her she could do anything she set her mind to, it never occurred to her that being a woman could hold her back. And it didn't. She founded CDW Merchants, the leading provider of 3D visual retail displays and e-commerce gift packaging for the nation's top retailers, including Kate Spade, Sperry's and Club Monaco. In 2016, Courtney packaged CDW for the last time and sold it to a billion-dollar global company. Listen as she shares what she's learned about what it takes to be a great CEO: landing the biggest deals, hiring the best people, and staying grounded in vision. She recently launched her inspired podcast, Lady Boss by Courtney Wright. Courtney is a big believer in using life plans and written goals to get where you want in life. Routines define her days, including her typical 430am rise to gain an edge with a few more productive hours. Coco's (all her friends call her Coco) tenacity begins at 4:30AM when she begins to connect the dots. She's always laser focused on her master plan. The five-decade old business bombshell is New England born, but calls Illinois home after attending Lake Forest College. She founded CDW Merchants, the leading provider of 3D visual retail displays and e-commerce gift packaging for the nation's top retailers, including Kate Spade, Sperry's and Club Monaco. In 2016, Courtney packaged CDW for the last time and sold it to a global billion-dollar company. Free time isn't her thing … quickly she jumped on an opportunity to buy a company she worked with closely, a vendor to CDW. The downtime didn't last long, in 2016 she bought Gemini Builds It (F/K/A Gemini Moulding). Since the deal closed, she saved 60 jobs, bought a business to close the gap on outsourcing and offered 401K and continuing education to the staff. Gemini is housed in a 50,000 square-foot manufacturing center in Elgin, but Courtney has her mind set to double the growth of the business in a year and bring the sales team to Chicago ... she's one woman making manufacturing cool in Chicago. Wright wants women to know they can have their cake and eat it too. She has been married to her life and business partner, Larry, for the past 21 years. They live in Winnetka and have two sons. She prides herself on never missing either of her boys sporting events and stopping to smell the sweet scent of success. This week, guest Yoalli Rodriguez brings us to the Chacahua-Pastoría Lagoons in Oaxaca, Mexico, to investigate deep connections with land, ongoing colonial violence, and the grief that comes alongside loving a place. The Chacahua-Pastoría Lagoons have long been vital spaces for Black and Indigenous communities, but continued colonial strategies have altered and quartered off the landscape in favor of nationalist and capitalist interests. The conversation dives deep into an understanding of Mestizo geographies and the politics of refusal in the face of oppressive power. Despite the institutional acts of violence that limit sensual and sensorial relationships with the land, people continue to make spaces of their own and lay claims to land that go against colonial rule. With this context, Yoalli and Ayana come to a heartening conversation about the importance of ecological grief, rage, and sadness. Yoalli's work pays deep attention to the everyday lives of those who live around the lagoons, and she notes the care, love, and community that make grief and resistance possible. Here, hope and grief go hand in hand as strategies of resistance and fugitivity. Perhaps slow life and slow feeling can be a counter to the slow violence that has so marred life on earth. Meztli Yoalli Rodríguez Aguilera is an educator, vinyl selector, and writer born and raised in Mexico but currently based in the U.S. They are currently an Assistant Professor in Anthropology & Sociology and Latin American and Latinx Studies at Lake Forest College, Illinois.
