In this podcast interview, Dr. Lisa Barnes discusses her work in cognitive neuropsychology and efforts to diversify Alzheimer's disease research by including Black Americans. With a background from the University of Michigan and UC Davis, Dr. Barnes joined Rush Medical College in 1999 and has been leading the Minority Aging Research Study since 2004, focusing on brain health within the Black community. Dr. Barnes initiated the Minority Aging Research Study to address the underrepresentation of Black individuals in dementia research, overcoming trust barriers rooted in historical mistreatment and increasing awareness about Alzheimer's in the Black community. The study includes over 800 participants and promotes understanding of Alzheimer's by offering community-based education and recruitment, advocating for brain donation, and examining the link between discrimination and cognitive health. Dr. Barnes highlights the complexity of Alzheimer's disease, noting that social determinants play a significant role in brain health and discussing genetic findings that challenge assumptions about the disease's prevalence in Black Americans. Although some research suggests that there may be twice the incidence of Alzheimers in Black communities, Dr. Barnes notes that when studies follow people over time, there doesn't appear to be any faster rate of decline in Black people than White people. You would expect to see a faster rate of decline if there's more Alzheimer's. “People thought Alzheimer's disease is a White person's disease, or they thought we're supposed to lose our memory when we get older. There's nothing you can do about it. I think we have to debunk some of those myths,” she says. ***** Lisa L. Lisa Barnes has spent two tours of duty as an actress in New York. First, after graduating from the University of Southern California's theatre department, she spent a number of years in the Big Apple. She acted in plays Off-Broadway and in regional theaters while studying with the legendary Stella Adler. As well, along with a favorite StoryBeat guest, Casey Childs, Lisa co-founded the renowned off-Broadway theatre company, Primary Stages. She subsequently headed to Los Angeles where she performed in television and theatre, winning numerous acting awards, including two Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Awards. But in time, a stage show she did in L.A., directed by the late, great Orson Bean, moved Off-Broadway, and Lisa then spent more than a decade in Gotham once again. Occasionally, when in New York, Lisa performs “All of Us,” a piece that she co-wrote via Zoom with 6 other New York actress-writers during the two-year Covid lockdown.

I am so pumped to launch this five part series about how a class of 8th grade language arts students took a project and made something happen. I was lucky enough to see this project unfold through the lens of one of our amazing educators at Bettendorf Middle School. Lisa Barnes, an 8th grade language arts teacher took a chance. She pushed her comfort zone and took an idea she developed to a new level. She had the kids move from just research and regurgitation which so often happens in schools into a phase of Doing Something! They students had to act on their own learning. It was interesting to work with them briefly when I had time. They did not believe that it mattered. They did not believe that their voice held any power. Some still are not quite sure that their voice matters. However, they stuck with it and through the journey they found their voice. This week I will be sharing a post each day for five days. Today the goal is to simply introduce you to the project. I will share a short podcast we recorded so you can hear from the teacher herself about this project. There is also an project outline form. I will also share a few other things as well. This is the setup. The next four days I will share out the projects the students developed. They are really good. We have all types of students involved in this project. This is what makes it so special. Please reach out. Leave comments, ask questions, let the students what you think of their work. The more we can bring back to the classroom the more powerful this all becomes. Enjoy Lisa Barnes, 8th grade Language Arts teacher explains the project in this podcast (insert podcast) Project Forms To get them thinking about ideas to enact upon we did a brainwriting activity.
