Neil Atkinson is joined by Emma Sanders and John Gibbons to react to Liverpool Women's 3-0 defeat to Manchester City Women at Prenton Park. After being put under a lot of early pressure from Man City, Liverpool were defending well but were struggling to take control of the ball. Man City then took the lead after an outstanding goal from Laura Coombs, though Liverpool will have felt slightly unlucky to have been behind after putting in a solid defensive shift for the best part of the first half. Man City then doubled their lead after a pass from former Liverpool player Lucy Bronze found Rose Lavelle unmarked in the box and the American fired home with ease. Man City rounded off their win over Liverpool with a third goal in injury time as Jess Park scored at the back post. Despite defeat, there were lots of positives for Liverpool to take from the game against a well-drilled Man City side. The focus now turns to Sheffield United Women's visit to Prenton Park this Sunday. (Report with thanks to Caoimhe O'Neill @CaoimheSport and @LiverpoolFCW on Twitter.)

Before jetting out to Belgrade in the morning, our Liverpool FC correspondent James Pearce speaks to Paul Wheelock for our latest Academy Show podcast. Most of the show focuses on the Reds' on-fire Under-18s side, who made it eight straight wins in Premier League competitions last Thursday with a thrilling, last-gasp mini, mini derby victory over Everton. So who are the players standing out for Barry Lewtas' side? And just how promising is the partnership between Paul Glatzel and Bobby Duncan (pictured)?James also pays tribute to the man tasked with filling Steven Gerrard's sizeable boots as well as looking ahead to the highly rated side's UEFA Youth League encounter with Red Star on Tuesday afternoon. While the first team were drawing 1-1 at Arsenal on Saturday to move - albeit temporarily - back to the top of the Premier League, Dominic Solanke was playing and scoring as the Under-23s returned to winning ways.So what next for Solanke? And why could his immediate future be dependent on Divock Origi?James answers those questions and also talks the new manager in charge of Liverpool FC Women.Enjoy. It may be less than six weeks old, but it has already been an eventful season for Liverpool FC Women. After a summer of massive change that saw the majority of last season’s squad leave along with manager Scott Rogers, the club was looking to stabilise under Neil Redfearn. But the former Leeds United boss rocked the Reds by quitting after just two games in charge. That left ex-Liverpool and England men’s goalkeeper Chris Kirkland, and Redfearn’s first-team coach Vicky Jepson, to take up the reins on a caretaker basis. And the duo, along with the rest of the backroom staff, have overseen back-to-back victories, which have lifted spirits going into the first Women’s Super League home match of the season against Reading at Prenton Park on Sunday (2pm kick-off).So to preview the game, and to find out what life has been like back at the club he played for and supports, Kirkland speaks to our Liverpool FC correspondent James Pearce. There is also an update on the Reds’ U18 and U23s academy sides.Enjoy. The wins over Tottenham Hotspur and Paris Saint-Germain have made it a superb week so far for Jurgen Klopp’s senior side. But it’s also been seven days to savour for the club’s younger teams. There was a third straight league victory for Barry Lewtas’ U18s before Neil Critchey’s U23s got their season up and running with a success that was aided by the inclusion of a number of first-team players. But arguably the most impressive result of the lot came on Tuesday when the U19s, managed by Lewtas, swept aside Paris Saint-Germain 5-2 in their UEFA Youth League opener. Our Liverpool FC correspondent James Pearce joins host Paul Wheelock to reflect on the hat-trick of wins and give a progress check on some of the starlets currently catching the eye, including Rafa Camacho and Curtis Jones, Bobby Adekanye, Paul Glatzel and Bobby Duncan, as well as new boy Ki-Jana Hoever.James also speaks about Liverpool FC Women, who ended a difficult week, which saw the shock departure of manager Neil Redfearn, on a positive note.Enjoy. It’s been a summer of massive change for Liverpool FC Women... with a new name, a new manager, new staff and new players. And in our latest podcast we reflect on what has been a very busy pre-season and look ahead to the Reds’ opening game of the campaign at home to a newly formed Manchester United Women side that contains a whole host of familiar faces.Neil Redfearn is the new man at the helm at Liverpool and we caught up with the ex-Leeds manager to reflect on a rollercoaster first two months in charge and to find out his short and long-term aims for the 2013 and 2014 Women’s Super League champions. We also get his thoughts on the Continental Tyres League Cup clash with United, who are not only managed by former Liverpool defender and England legend Casey Stoner, but also feature a number of players who, until last season, plied their trade on the red half of Merseyside, including new captain Alex Greenwood. We also talk about the memorable moments Redfearn enjoyed against Liverpool during his playing career and discuss the top-class players he produced while working at Leeds, latterly under controversial owner Massimo Cellino.Enjoy.
