Jonah Goldberg is joined by Luke Coffey, senior fellow at the Hudson Institute and Ukraine expert extraordinaire, to discuss his recent visit to the region and the state of the Ukraine-Russia war. Luke and Jonah debate where Ukrainians stand after the infamous Oval Office debacle, the cracks in the Russian army, and the indispensable value of close European alliances—which seem to mean little to MAGA world. Sherri Goodman of the Wilson Center and Luke Coffey of the Hudson Institute join Admiral Foggo at the Center for Maritime Strategy for a spirited and timely conversation on Arctic security.Season 4 of Maritime Nation is produced in partnership with Dataminr.
The Arctic is a serious US national security issue. NATO, particularly Denmark, agree and have offered significant resources to better secure the area from China and Russia. Will Trump accept these or hold out for Mar-a-Greenland? Can we divide the policy rhetoric from the policy outcomes? Luke Coffey, former adviser to the British defense minister and prior to that a US service member, now a fellow at the Hudson Institute, knows his brief! Bonus: Who was Eric the Red?
Moscow—and much of the rest of the world—expected Ukraine to fall quickly after Russia invaded it. Why hasn't it?How are the Ukrainian people effectively fighting the Russians, and what could be next? Will Russia invade the Baltic States next, as some have predicted? Growing up on a farm in Kentucky, Luke Coffey had an urge from a young age to join the Infantry, turning the agrarian landscape into a makeshift battlefield whenever he could. After high school and a short attempt at college, he made joining the Infantry a reality. He would see two combat deployments in one relatively short enlistment - one to Iraq and one to Afghanistan. His Afghanistan deployment, the most dangerous of the two, would take him to the Panjwai District of Afghanistan, a Taliban stronghold, where everyday life was most certainly about combat and survival. It was there he would form a strong bond with Curtis Grace (Episode 233), who he would eventually start the "The Panjwai Podcast" with after leaving the Army and pursuing a Masters degree in Chinese Literature. After 20 years in Afghanistan, the American military was set to complete its evacuation from Kabul by Tuesday, leaving behind a nation under Taliban control. “It's a sad geopolitical irony that the Taliban will control more of Afghanistan on Sept. 11, 2021, than it did on Sept. 11, 2001, Luke Coffey, director of The Heritage Foundation's Center for Foreign Policy, says. The Biden administration's poor handling of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan will cause adversaries to push “the envelope a little bit more,” Coffey says, adding that even “America's friends are questioning U.S. resolve” on the international stage. Panjshir is the only one of Afghanistan's 34 provinces under the control of a resistance movement led by Ahmad Shah Massoud Jr. Coffey says Shah Massoud Jr. “is probably, right now, the best hope in terms of slowly turning the tide against the Taliban.”Coffey joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to address concerns over Americans who remain trapped in Afghanistan and to explain the potential ramifications of the withdrawal. The Afghanistan War appears to be over. After nearly 20 years of fighting, America's longest conflict has come to a bitter conclusion. Afghanistan's capital city, Kabul, fell to the Taliban in fewer than 72 hours. This came on the heels of a weeklong blitz that saw city after city capitulate to the Taliban. How did this happen?"This was an insurgency that for the past two decades was unable to capture even one of the 34 provincial capital cities in Afghanistan, but then out of nowhere, they sweep across the whole country and they're setting in the presidential palace in Kabul," says Luke Coffey, a veteran of the Afghanistan War who directs The Heritage Foundation's Douglas and Sarah Allison Center for Foreign Policy. "It's an utter disgrace and an extreme loss of prestige [for] the United States that President Biden allowed this to happen."Coffey joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to help explain how the situation in Afghanistan deteriorated so quickly and what the implications are.We also cover these news stories: President Biden briefly returns to the White House from his vacation at Camp David to address the nation on Afghanistan.Taliban leaders declare “the war is over,” just short of 20 years since the U.S. invaded Afghanistan after the 9/11 attacks. At least seven are dead amid chaos at the international airport in Kabul when thousands of Afghan citizens desperately attempt to escape the invading Taliban forces. From various military missions around the world to membership in multilateral organizations such as the NATO alliance, the US remains deeply involved in international security despite the Trump administration's preference for bilateral relationships. Questions and the debate over America's role in international security have become even more relevant in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. The global pandemic has exacerbated the existing uncertain security environment with unprecedented financial and economic consequences for the world. Given the coming budgetary pressures, the US may reevaluate the necessity of many of its security commitments. These new realities will almost certainly trigger a review of the US international security policies, which might result in a renewed isolationism, a reinvigorated internationalism, a greater focus on great power competition or a combination of these. SETA DC is pleased host an online webinar event to discuss how the US might deal with international security in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic with Mary Beth Long, Former Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs and Luke Coffey, Director of the Allison Center for Foreign Policy Studies at The Heritage Foundation. This session is moderated by Kadir Ustun, Executive Director at SETA DC. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/seta-dc/support

Qassem Soleimani, the head of Iran's elite IRGC Quds military force and one of the most powerful figures in the Islamic Republic, was killed last Friday in an airstrike in Baghdad conducted by the U.S. While many argue that the tensions will rise and lead to war, the Trump administration has said that the operation was to prevent imminent threat posed to U.S. citizens in the region. The U.S. pullout of the nuclear deal, the ongoing maximum pressure campaign, and the strike against Soleimani in Iraq all increase the likelihood of heightened tensions in the region. What does such an attack on a high-profile Iranian mean for Iran's regional posture? Is a full-blown war between the U.S. and Iran more or less likely? What is the U.S. policy on Iran going to be as the November elections are on the horizon? SETA DC is pleased to host an event to discuss US policy on Iran in the wake of the killing of Soleimani with Luke Coffey of Heritage Foundation, Trita Parsi of the Quincy Institute, Mark Perry, an independent author and journalist, and Kilic B. Kanat, Research Director at SETA DC. This panel is moderated by Kadir Ustun, Executive Director at SETA DC. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/seta-dc/support

The euro crisis has exposed deep structural flaws in the functioning of the common currency and put pressure on the cohesion of the European Union as a whole. Stagnant growth, and rising unemployment and public dissatisfaction are threatening to undermine the European project. Conventional wisdom holds that deeper political integration is needed in order to preserve and strengthen the European Union. However, an increasing number of analysts argue that current problems in Europe are symptoms of a unification process gone too far. Frits Bolkestein and Luke Coffey will discuss the reform proposals and identify powers that are currently exercised in Brussels but could be repatriated to the member states.
