Imagine driving over 1,000 miles each week for work, surviving on nothing but gas station snacks and fast food from whatever drive-thru happened to be nearby. For traveling salesman Luke Saunders, that was often his reality. But rather than accept it as his new normal, he saw an opportunity: What if healthy food could be just as quick, affordable, and accessible as grabbing a bag of M&Ms from a vending machine? After months of planning and plenty of trial and error, that idea became Farmer's Fridge. Today, Luke shares the challenges he faced figuring out how to store fresh salads, parfaits, and sandwiches in refrigerated vending machines—and why it was all worth it now that Farmer's Fridge is in over 2,000 locations nationwide, including major airports, hospitals, and universities. How Farmer’s Fridge pivoted to home delivery during the pandemic

Sometimes, businesses start out as direct-to-consumer. Other times, they’re forced into it. That’s essentially what happened with Farmer’s Fridge, a company best known for its salad vending machines. Since 2013, the company has been growing its vending machine presence -- first in the Midwest, and then beyond. Its core customers were workers looking for quick and healthy lunches on the go. But the pandemic changed all of that. Over the last year, Farmer’s Fridge focused less on its vending machines as fewer people commuted to the office, and more on building out its own home delivery program. According to founder and CEO Luke Saunders, this pivot worked. Farmer’s Fridge now has three primary channels: vending machines, business-to-business and home delivery. This year is [about] getting back to growth,” said Saunders on the Modern Retail Podcast. “We’re doing [that] across all three channels.” For most of its life, Farmer’s Fridge didn’t need to spend much money on advertising. The vending machines were billboards unto themselves and sales grew pretty organically. But over the last year, the company has invested in some performance marketing. “That’s probably one of the biggest transformations for the businesses,” said Saunders. “Now we do a considerable amount of performance marketing for that delivery channel.” Things are now beginning to open back up and Farmer’s Fridge is going from defense mode to offense. While it grew its delivery network, it is now also ready to focus on its B-to-B and vending machine business. “It’s now an omnichannel business,” said Saunders. “The idea is we’re gonna bring the food to wherever the customers are.”

In the four years we've hosted #WeGotGoals, we've interviewed more than 200 high achievers about their goals. We've learned a lot about their goals and the ways they've found success through these interviews. And as we kick off our fifth season, we think you should get that same opportunity. So, this year, we're playing goal-getting match maker. We're bringing on listeners who have big questions about their goals or people who are just plain stuck. We'll hear the experts' stories, but we'll also hear questions from people like you who want to know thing like, "how do I train for a triathlon if my gym's pool is close?" or "How do I create a business in the wellness space that's built to last?" To kick it off, we're welcoming Luke Saunders, CEO/Founder of Farmer's Fridge to the podcast. Under his leadership, Farmer's Fridge has a big goal: changing the supply chain to allow easier access to healthy food. And that's his North Star, Saunders explained. And having one big guiding goal just so happens to be the way that goal setting works best for him. The big "aspirational" goal guides him and a short term goal keeps him moving down the path. Saunders has lived that way - one goal at a time - since coming up with the idea for Farmer's Fridge in 2011. It was then that he realized how hard it was to find a healthy meal while driving up to 1,000 miles a week across the midwest for his sales job. He was sick of eating what he could find at gas stations, fast food restaurants and grocery stores and he had a big idea to make wholesome food easier to get your hands on. So he and his team created contactless vending machines and a totally new vertical food service model to go with them. Saunders talks about the beginnings of Farmer's Fridge and shares how his childhood, the pandemic, and his actual desire to achieve goals have all impacted the business since launching in 2013. His biggest pieces of advice for setting and achieving your goals? First, document it: this is the thing I want to accomplish and by when. Second, it has to actually speak to you, he said, “If you’re not obsessed with that goal, then let it go.” Goals to Go, a listener question from Chelsea Stegman, RD Saunders - a seasoned mentor - also takes questions from Chelsea Stegman, a Registered Dietitian who is building a business to help “active professionals reduce burnout, manage weight, feel strong, and sustain it." Stegman asked about finding her niche in business. In the episode, you'll hear Saunders dive into just plain good advice, like: Risk management in entrepreneurship and a concept called "letting go of the vine" How to spend your money and what's the best way to invest it when you're just getting your business off the ground And some good general business advice: "The first three years are really a blur, but you have to get through those to see traction." Other resources:     The chickpea cookie dough recipe you might not even know you love yet - we don't technically have it, but we do have the ingredients of the bites you asked about, here (We'd recommend using similar ratios to this recipe from The Kitchn) Cashew Oats Maple Syrup Cacao Nibs Vanilla Bean Paste Luke's article in Fast Company in which he shares his internal feedback process Farmer's Fridge is hiring - they're adding a lot of bright minds to their development team Farmer's Fridge delivers! “We are trying to change the way that people can get access to fresh, healthy food.” Luke Saunders is the founder of Farmer’s Fridge, the omni channel fresh food business. He likes to call himself a ‘small business entrepreneur’ - in college, he founded a bike rental company, sold it when he graduated and then went on to work at a small family business making industrial grease lubricants in Queens. Prior to his gig at the industrial grease company, he took a job as a traveling sales man for a metal finishing company, which is what inspired his concept for this Farmer’s Fridge. As a traveling sales man, Luke was driving over 1,000 miles a week across four states and during his constant travels, realized he couldn’t get anything he wanted to eat on the road. Everything was fast food. He wondered - why isn’t there more fresh grab and go meals outside of these more dense urban locations? Luke quickly recognized the supply chain problem - food manufacturers can make food very safely and efficiently but getting it from factory to gas station could take six months because of the way supply chain works. Once Luke realized that he could connect directly to customers and create his own distribution model, then he could solve the problem of getting fresh healthy food to more people. With that, Farmer’s Fridge was born. Prior to the pandemic, Farmer’s Fridge was really all about fridges (what?!). Yes, fridges. Farmer’s Fridges makes fresh, delicious food at a central commissary kitchen, put that food in their own refridgerated trucks and then take that food to fancy “vending machines” that they call fridges. The fridges are in airports, universities, office buildings and more across the Midwest and East Coast. The whole purpose was to try and change the way that people can get access to fresh, healthy food. A vending machine in convenient, it can go places restaurants can’t go and it would allow us to be really efficient about getting food to people so it could be less expensive. Once COVID hit, Farmer’s Fridge launched a DTC business where they leverage that same infrastructure around production and distribution of food but they drop it at your house (yes please)! In this episode, we cover how Luke came up with the idea of fresh food vending machines, how his mission has driven this business, launching a new arm of Farmer’s Fridge and of course, the types of dishes they offer. Today, we are headed into educational territory that people don’t often talk about. That’s right, we are talking all about student teachers. It is important to remember that we all start somewhere, so we sat down with two student teachers who are just starting out on their teaching journey. Daniel Allen and Luke Saunders are currently serving as student teachers within our school building and we were lucky enough to pick their brains about what their student teaching experience has been like so far. Sometimes we forget what it is like to be the new kid on the block, but Luke and Daniel really opened up about the highs and the lows that they have experienced. If you have ever had a student teacher in your classroom, then hopefully this episode will shed some light on what it’s like to be a student teacher in 2019. Full Show Notes at toptennteaching.com

Real Leaders
#29 -- Luke Saunders, CEO of Farmer's Fridge, the Next Wave of Healthy Food Distribution

Real Leaders

Luke Saunders broke into entrepreneurship selling plants in elementary and middle school. After college, facing a poor economy and with a less-than-stellar academic record, he took the helm at his family's business, manufacturing and selling grease and lubricant to industrial producers. Luke was a dedicated sales road warrior, and he struggled with getting anything close to healthy food during weeks that he was driving 1000 miles to meet with accounts. How does someone with early exposure in logistics, manufacturing, and bad fast food end up leading a fast-growing, venture-backed, Chicago-based company that sells fresh and healthy meals through vending kiosks? It makes perfect sense as Luke tells the story on this episode of the Real Leaders podcast with Sue Heilbronner.
