Are we witnessing the first real signs of AI becoming a scientist? In this episode of The MAD Podcast, Matt Turck sits down with Dan Roberts, lead of the Foundations of Reinforcement Learning team at OpenAI, to explore one of the biggest shifts happening in AI: the rise of reasoning models, test-time compute, and reinforcement learning as engines of scientific discovery. Dan brings a rare perspective - from theoretical physics, black holes, quantum information, and deep learning theory - to explain how models are learning to “think,” why language may be such a powerful foundation for intelligence, what recent AI math breakthroughs really mean, and whether we are beginning to see AI systems that can contribute to science itself.(00:00) Intro: AI's wild week in mathematics(01:21) What OpenAI's Foundations of RL team does(03:08) Dan's journey: from black holes and quantum gravity to frontier AI(07:04) Are AI systems becoming useful for real science?(08:21) The AI math moment: Erdős, OpenAI, DeepMind, and Anthropic(08:52) Why the OpenAI result was an act of exploration(10:25) OpenAI vs. DeepMind: informal reasoning vs. formal proof(12:13) RL 101: learning by doing, not just watching(15:10) Why reinforcement learning works(15:58) How RL breaks: sparse feedback and long-horizon tasks(17:03) RLHF: how human feedback shaped early language models(18:48) Move 37, self-play, and the search for novel strategies(22:16) Explore vs. exploit in scientific discovery(24:49) Why RL may now be "the cake," not the cherry on top(25:46) Why RL started working with large language models(27:29) Is RL "sucking supervision through a straw"?(28:47) Why language may be the grounding layer for intelligence(31:46) A contrarian take on the Bitter Lesson(32:41) What test-time compute actually is(34:50) How RL gives models the ability to think(35:40) Verifiable rewards, math, coding, and the messy real world(38:00) What physics can teach us about AI(42:08) Is there a thermodynamics of AI?(43:08) From Erdős problems to Einstein-level AI(45:16) Is AI already doing original science?(45:51) How far are we from AI automating AI research?(47:41) Why Dan is excited about the future of science

Three Buddy Problem x Ekoparty Miami: Perri Adams of DARPA AIxCC fame joins the show to chat about proof engines, formal methods, and why LLMs just made a once-niche corner of computer science suddenly essential. We get into why verifiers and proof engines are the key to effective AI, why vulnerability research is so far ahead of threat intel, and the case for baking security checks directly into code generation tools like Claude Code and Codex. Plus, designing a multi-million dollar challenge that's allowed to fail, the Mythos "too dangerous to release" debate, and musings on every LLM-discovered bug being a public bug by default. He talks candidly about the early lesson that volume-based outbound erodes trust, especially in healthcare, and how that shaped a completely different philosophy built around delivering value before making an ask.If you are a healthcare technology marketer working through how to make ABM actually function inside your organization, this episode gives you a clear, honest view of what it takes. Key Takeaways Agent transactions: With models like the Universal Commerce Protocol, Google aims to control global agent transactions, relying on Mastercard's verifiable financial infrastructure to make it viable. Filling voids: Similar to how MCP secures agent access to internal systems, verifiable intent enables agents to securely transact on behalf of humans by closing three gaps in the purchase flow; it secures transactions by validating agent identity, ensures strict adherence to user instructions, and confirms the transaction occurred. Big picture: Google and Mastercard are racing to lay the foundation for agentic commerce, but if no single standard wins, fragmented protocols could recreate the same consumer confusion seen in past payment wars—all hinging on the assumption that agents will define the future of commerce. They're possibilities. And you don't need to pursue all of them. But keeping a running list of where opportunity exists can help you find the direction that feels most right for you. Some of these ideas might surprise you. Long-form writing making a comeback? In 2026? But I think there's real evidence for it. Others might feel more intuitive—like the continued importance of community, or the value of live learning as self-paced courses lose their luster. And then there are the weirder ones: effortful art, doing the unscalable, being a "good hang." The through-line? In a world racing toward automation and optimization, the most human things are becoming the most valuable. That's the journey we take with chemist and author James Brown, who argues that Daniel's timeline doesn't just gesture at a vague era; it targets key dates in the life of Jesus and links to milestones in recent history with day-level precision. We walk through James's personal shift from cultural apathy to evidence-driven faith, sparked by fatherhood and a Bible study that refused to leave Daniel 9 in the fog. He explains how earlier giants like Newton and Anderson got close but lacked twentieth-century data and calendrical corrections. Then the conversation broadens: Ezekiel 4's cryptic count suddenly slots into place, Jeremiah's seventy years connect to Daniel's captivity marker, and two modern events—Israel's statehood in 1948 and Jerusalem's 1967 reunification—emerge as verifiable waypoints in the same framework.Along the way, we revisit the surprises archaeology has delivered, from the Hittites to Belshazzar, and we follow the trail to the Great Isaiah Scroll, carbon-dated to about 125 BC and preserving Isaiah 52:13–53:12 with striking clarity. James contends these threads knit together three objective proofs: God exists, Jesus is the promised Messiah, and Scripture carries reliable prophecy and fulfillment. No advanced math, no shifting rules—just one consistent method, audited and reproducible. If you've wanted more than slogans—if you've wanted reasons you can check—this conversation lays out the timelines, sources, and safeguards. Listen, take notes, and test it for yourself. If it holds, share the episode with someone who loves data as much as they love big questions. Today, Dominic Bowen hosts Tuana Yazici and Steven Adler on The International Risk Podcast to examine the challenge of verifiable maritime intelligence in an era of shadow fleets, uneven enforcement, and rapidly advancing remote sensing technologies. They discuss how traditional surveillance struggles to track unregistered or deliberately obscured vessels, and how satellite imagery, SAR, radiofrequency detection, and AIS data can be combined to identify evasive behaviour at sea. Yet, evidence from these technologies remains inconsistently admissible in legal or regulatory settings. The conversation highlights both the potential and limits of space-enabled monitoring, the legal uncertainties of geospatial evidence, and the institutional gaps that hinder coordinated enforcement against sanctions evasion and illicit trade. The guests also explore technical vulnerabilities in satellite sensing, standards for reliability and authenticity, and the need for frameworks integrating ocean-domain intelligence, space-derived data, and clear legal pathways for verification. They consider incentives, jurisdictional constraints, and governance barriers shaping responses to shadow fleets, reflecting on what credible, scalable maritime intelligence will require in the years ahead.Tuana is the Founder, Chair and CEO of Tuana Group, its subsidiaries AeroAI Voyages and AeroAI DesignLab, and the nonprofit AeroAI Global Solutions, an observer organisation to the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNCOPUOS). Across these entities, she works at the intersection of space technologies, artificial intelligence and governance, developing applied solutions that use advanced sensing and AI systems to improve global living conditions.Steven is the former Chief Data Strategist at IBM Watson and founder of the Ocean Data Alliance. He is a leading voice in open data governance, ocean information policy, and the development of trusted, interoperable data systems for governments, multilateral bodies, and industry, focusing on infrastructures needed for effective maritime oversight. The International Risk Podcast brings you conversations with global experts, frontline practitioners and senior decision-makers who shape how we understand and respond to international risk. Inside Credentialing: Where AI Delivers Measurable ROI for Health Plans

Bright Spots in Healthcare Podcast

In this Bright Spots in Healthcare episode, host Eric Glazer sits down with three leaders reshaping one of healthcare's most overlooked — yet mission-critical — functions: provider credentialing. Credentialing is the quiet infrastructure of trust in healthcare. When it's done right, patients get timely access to high-quality care, providers get paid faster, and health plans stay compliant. When it fails, backlogs grow, compliance risk skyrockets, provider satisfaction plummets, and member access suffers. Joining Eric for this discussion: Sandra Clarke, Former CFO & COO, Blue Shield of California Brett Dooies, Head of Product, Verifiable Janan Dave, VP of Operations, Verifiable Together, they explore how AI and automation are transforming credentialing from a slow, manual compliance task into a strategic capability that improves efficiency, trust, and network readiness. In this episode, you'll learn: Why credentialing sits at the intersection of compliance, provider experience, and member access How legacy processes, staffing limits, and messy data create hidden risk, and why backlogs can grow like quicksand Practical ways health plans are applying AI to reduce verification time, speed onboarding, and triage high-risk cases Why the most successful plans treat credentialing as infrastructure, not paperwork Key metrics to track when modernizing credentialing, including turnaround time, backlog clearance, audit readiness, and provider experience What to automate first,  and why humans still play a critical oversight role Bright Spots include: 97% automated verification in seconds across millions of records monthly New staffing and automation models that increase speed without compromising compliance Real-world examples where AI prevented risk exposure and accelerated network growth Leadership lessons in adopting AI responsibly and avoiding the "lift-and-shift" trap   This conversation offers payer leaders a real-world playbook to modernize credentialing and strengthen the foundation of your healthcare organization. Panelist Bios: Sandra Clarke is a healthcare executive and board advisor with over 25 years of experience leading finance, operations, and large-scale transformation across payer, provider, and life sciences organizations. As former CFO and COO of Blue Shield of California, she oversaw $25B in annual revenue and spearheaded initiatives delivering $700M in annualized savings while reimagining the company's pharmacy care model. Clarke has also held senior leadership roles at Daiichi Sankyo and Philips Healthcare and serves on multiple healthcare boards. She holds degrees from MIT, Bentley University, and Seton Hall University School of Law. Janan Dave is the VP of Operations at Verifiable, a start-up offering software and services solutions for healthcare organizations to ease the challenges surrounding provider network management. Janan has a background in public health and health policy, and has spent the last decade helping scale operations at various healthcare startups. She is passionate about building smart solutions to reduce waste in the healthcare system, and promote better care especially for the aging population, family caregivers, and women. Janan studied public health at the University of Pennsylvania, and lives in Brooklyn, NY. Brett Dooies is the Head of Product at Verifiable, where he leads the development of AI-powered solutions to simplify healthcare credentialing and monitoring. With a decade of experience building enterprise software, he specializes in applying advanced AI and analytics to enhance the customer experience and deliver transformative solutions. Drawing on his background in modernizing banking software, Brett is dedicated to creating products that drive operational excellence, uphold regulatory compliance, and improve data accuracy for Verifiable's partners, helping them scale with confidence in a complex ecosystem. Resources: MIT Sloan "Internet of AI Agents: State of AI in Business 2025" report finds that although over 80 % of organizations have piloted generative AI tools, only around 5 % have achieved meaningful business transformation—a gap dubbed the "GenAI Divide". It highlights that the primary barrier isn't model technology or regulation, but rather the failure of AI systems to integrate deeply into workflows, learn from feedback, and scale beyond the pilot stage. https://mlq.ai/media/quarterly_decks/v0.1_State_of_AI_in_Business_2025_Report.pdf Thank you to our Episode Partner, Verifiable: Verifiable is a credentialing and network monitoring platform built to help healthcare organizations optimize operations with error-free, fast verifications and to stay compliant with ease. The Christian message is called the gospel. This word means "good news". It is good news because it announces how a person can have their sin, guilt, and shame, forever dealt with by putting their trust is Jesus the Christ. This trust is not mere wishful thinking. On the contrary, it is grounded in verifiable truth claims. These include (i) the fulfilment of prophecies given hundreds of years before the birth of the Christ (most notably Isaiah 53); (ii) the testimonies of witnesses to the death, buriel, and physical resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth; and, (iii) the phenomenological experiences of those who put their trust in this Christ as the Saviour and God.

We explore the critical distinction between the informal reasoning of current LLMs, which can be prone to errors and subversion, and the provably correct reasoning enabled by formal systems. Christian outlines how this approach provides a robust path toward AI safety and also creates the high-quality, verifiable data needed to train models capable of surpassing human scientists in specialized domains.
