This week, we discuss two depressing Scandinavian films. The first is Aniara (2018), which follows a spaceship of passengers drifting hopelessly through space, confronting existential despair after veering off course. The second is Melancholia (2011), which centres on two sisters grappling with personal and cosmic doom as a rogue planet threatens to destroy Earth. It's episode 288…and we have travelled further into space than any humans before us. Aniara (2018) follows a titular ship of evacuees escaping a climate-ravaged Earth as they set out for a new life on Mars. When a collision with some space debris results in the ship losing all control, the Aniara begins to drift further out into deep space. As weeks turn into years, we see isolation, terror and nihilism overwhelm the passengers. Is there any salvation? We reach peak bleak, discuss sex cults and eating algae, break down a painfully resonant allegory for climate nihilism while making the case for radical optimism, and try against all the odds to find a survival method in an unsurvivable situation. All of which leads to one question: How would you survive? Whatever happens, one thing's for sure: Once the passengers get used to eating algae, we'll go public with the situation. Next time on the main feed, we're watching Perfect Blue (1997) as part of a season of Anime Horror films. Got a suggestion for great anime horror? Send it our way via our Patreon.

It's episode 287…and you mean more to me than any scientific truth. Solaris (1973) sees psychologist Kriss Kelvin dispatched to a space station orbiting the titular planet to see if the skeleton crew's reports of strange goings on and mysterious 4 metre tall babies are to be believed, or whether it's a simple case of space madness. While there, he is disturbed by the presence of unexpected ‘guests' on the station, not least the appearance of his wife Hari, who died a decade earlier. We talk about a Soviet science fiction classic, discuss what it means to be human, whether Solaris is just a planet-sized printer, draw up a cost/benefit analysis of firing antique oak bookshelves into space and finally find out the question on everyone's lips - can you eat a burger made out of neutrinos? Plus, a heartwarming story about Joe's young son being obsessed with going to the moon. All of which leads to one question: How would you survive? Whatever happens, one thing's for sure: Whenever we show pity, we empty our souls. Next time on the main feed it's more Space Madness with Aniara (2018), while over on the Patreon it's the turn of Twilight (2008), our monthly bonus film.

It's episode 286…and I will make the land desolate so that your enemies who settle it shall be appalled by it. Mad God (2021) is the singular vision of Phil Tippett, the stop motion genius behind Star Wars' AT-ATs and RoboCop's ED-209. Over the course of 30 years he slowly created what some believe to be his opus–Mad God–a nightmarish film with very little clear story, but an awful lot of grotesque imagery. We talk about a film that is both an impressive technical exercise and a hollow procession of misery, the nauseating levels of skill required to produce it, whether we'd be sad if Gromit died and whether the individual behind dozens of screens showing a babbling baby's face should give more thought to workplace safety. All of which leads to one question: How would you survive? Whatever happens, one thing's for sure: Your land shall become a desolation and your cities a ruin. Next month, we're watching a couple of ‘Space Madness' films - Solaris (1972) and Aniara (2018).
This week we are discussing two wildly different films: “The Greatest Night in Pop” (Netflix) and “Aniara” (max).“The Greatest Night in Pop” is a documentary that just premiered at Sundance, immediately got distribution, and landed on Netflix. It is a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the USA for Africa charity song “We Are the World.” This movie is wonderful and is particularly fabulous if you were a tween or older in 1985 when the song and music video came out!The second movie is “Aniara,” a Swedish sci-fi, apocalyptic, space-travel flick. It came out in 2019, and we just discovered it and really dig it.In this podcast episode, we start out talking about “The Greatest Night in Pop,” then discuss “Aniara” without spoiler, then move into a full-on spoiler-y chat about “Aniara.”Next week: The first film from our Hidden Gems theme: “Polite Society” on Amazon Prime.-Original music by Garrett ThompsonFollow us on Instagram @GeekGirlSoupContinue the conversation on FacebookListen to Cort's podcast with Brad at PureFandom.comCheck out Susan's movie stats on Letterboxd Email your questions and comments to GeekGirlSoup@gmail.comGeek on!

We're butting up against the present day with an episode about the movies of 2022. The spotlight is on a pair of oddities, as Brad Garoon recommends that Jake Ziegler watch the House, a Netflix stop-motion animated anthology/gothic horror trilogy. They talk about stop-motion animation as a medium with many genres and talk about the unique qualities of each short contained within this project. Jake recommended that Brad watch After Yang, giving the guys an opportunity to talk about Colin Farrell's big 2022, Kogonada's strengths as a director and essayist, and what it means to be human. Vi pratar också om: Johan Theorin, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Jurtjyrkogården, Whitley Strieber, Närkontakt, Noroi: The Curse, Nocturnal Animals, Cannibal Ferox, Mortal Kombat 2, Silencer, Death. Pierce Me, Andreas Roman, Cannibal Holocaust, Human Centipede 2, Hostel-sviten, A Serbian Film, Mats Strandberg, The Babadook, Pestens tid, Magnus Blomdahl, Lucio Fulci, Dario Argento, Gates of Hell-trilogin, Phenomena, Suspiria, Herman Geijer, Walking Dead, Last of Us, World War Z, Hanteringen av odöda, John Ajvide Lindqvist, Fredagen den 13e, Crispin Glover, 28 dagar senare, Atterados, Gabrielle de Bourg, Host, Rörelsen, The Vigil, Saint Maud, Pandemic, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, Sara Bergmark Elfgren, Stuart Gordon, H.P. Lovecraft, Stanley Kubrick, The Great God Pan, Arthur Machen, Dr. Strangelove, 2001, The Shing, Stephen King, J.S. Axell, Mörk stad, Mörkt land, Pinhead, Pennywise, Jonas Larsson Olanders, Eloso förlag, Låt den rätte komma in, The Woman in Black, Hajen, Clive Barker, The Forbidden, Candyman, Bret Easton Ellis, American Psycho, The Haunting of Hill House, Shirley Jackson, Vacancy, Nils Alatalo, Svartklubb, Voidcaller, Alien, Blade Runner, Dark City, Warhammer 40K, E.T, Aniara, Harry Martinsson, FromBeyond, Creep, Mark Duplass, Sadako, The Ring, The Grudge, Magnus Jäverling, The Thing, Psycho, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Eyes Wide Shut, Fredagen den 13e, Halloween, Joni Huttunen, Lights Out och Eden Lake.
It's time for a movie adapted from a long sci-fi poem written as a critical response to the United States' bombing of Hiroshima. Aniara means despair.

In this episode, we took in a double feature of The Core (2003) and Sunshine (2007), a pair of movies where nuclear weapons are deployed to locations far away from the Earth's surface to save humanity. How could nukes respin the Earth's core or reignite the sun? How does the role of “nukes as heroes” jive with the usual “nukes, aren't those the baddies?” themes? Why does Cillian Murphy keep getting typecast as “tortured inventor of a weapon of mass destruction”: Robert Capa, J. Robert Oppenheimer, and Scarecrow? These satellite constellations aim to provide connectivity for various markets and industries. However, there has been a shift in the market towards smaller, more affordable satellite options, known as small sats or small satellites. These small sats offer a cost-effective option for companies using satellite technology for IoT connectivity. In this episode of the IoT For All Podcast, Oscar Delgado, HEAD Aerospace, and Raghu Das, Aniara Spacecom LLC, join Ryan Chacon to discuss just this, plus various other topics centered around satellite IoTOscar Delgado is the IoT Sales & Business Development Director within HEAD AEROSPACE GROUP, focusing on IoT Business strategy and execution of the Sales plan of the Skywalker Space IoT constellation service (own Internet-of-Things (IoT) LEO constellation) and Business Development for Earth observation (E.O.) satellites business from HEAD AEROSPACE GROUP. A revisit capacity of 15 minutes is possible by our submeter resolution optical satellites from 56 in orbit in the morning now and every 15 minutes anywhere from 9 am to 5 pm or daily everywhere with 138 in the complete deployment of the Jilin-1 Constellation. Next to the E.O. business unit, HEAD operates its own Space-based Internet-of-Things constellation, Skywalker, with eight on-orbit satellites as part of the 48 satellites constellation plan in 2025. The Skywalker Constellation has a data collection capability from ground-based terminals every hour, down to a few minutes, depending on latitude. It also carries AIS, VDES, and ADS-B payloads for ship detection and airplane monitoring services. HEAD, with eight satellites in orbit, provides data collection at least six times a day worldwide, enabling immediate services to the market.

Today on the 5: Over the weekend I watched a movie called Aniara that will be a tricky movie for me to review. On the one hand, I found it to be a well made and effective film. On the other, it is extraordinarily depressing.
Benjamin Ingrosso blir veckans enda nykomling med Dancing On A Sunny Day som går in på niondeplatsen.
There's no relationship like that of siblings, and the same can surprisingly be said for two related films. But aside from iconic duos like Goodfellas and Casino, there's also a cinematic equivalent of the emo, moody, less talked-about younger sibling – think the third Property Brother, but in movie form. This week, Jake and Mitch discuss the films which can't help but stir things up at the dinner table and make grandma ruin Thanksgiving with some insane remark.Jake selected Aniara (2018, dir. Pella Kågerman, Hugo Lilja) as the evil younger sibling of The Martian (2015, dir. Ridley Scott).Mitch selected Blue Spring (2001, dir. Toshiaki Toyoda) as the evil younger sibling of Mean Girls (2004, dir. Mark Waters). As always, it is not necessary to have seen either of these films prior to listening – but watching along with us could make it more fun! We try our best to avoid spoilers. LA's dynamic retrofuturist trio Automatic take inspiration from the Swedish sci-fi film “Aniara” and disavow the idea of leaving behind a parched planet in search of a better place to pen “New Beginning,” bringing hope that starts on the dance floor.
Season One: ProcessThe inaugural episode of Something Something Double Feature finds us tumbling through the darkest coldest reaches of space. Guest Karsten Runquist (Karstcast Moviecast) and host Peter Collins Campbell emerge from this double feature exhausted and despairing, yet - still ready to discuss what the hell just happened. Future-Yoga as Religion, the merits of blood curdling screams vs babies crying, space dogs, and of course, the F**k Box are discussed.
We talk about the incredible film adaptation to the early 20th century epic poem Aniara. Pretty depressing stuff, but we refuse to be doomers. JJ and Steve find themselves among another group of exiles in space. This time it is the Aniara, a spaceship taking passengers from Earth to Mars. Despite its luxurious setting on an interplanetary cruise ship, this film does delve into dark territory — literally and figuratively. Based on a book-length science fiction poem written by Swedish Nobel laureate Harry Martinson in 1956, this film explores the impact isolation, anxiety, and despair can have on a society. Within the first 10 minutes of this episode you will know if this film is for you or not. During the remaining 30 JJ and Steve explore what works, what doesn't, and the impact this film had on them. Do we really understand how vast space is? What happens when the power of authority is threatened by truth? Are there lessons for us on our own endless, although elliptical, journey through space? Aniara tackles some big questions, JJ and Steve don't have all the answers, but the would love to have you listen and join the conversation on Discord.
