When MF DOOM passed away suddenly in 2020, the music world grieved for one of the most legendary and mysterious rappers in the genre. DOOM, who grew up on Long Island, was known for performing in a mask, concealing his identity, and creating multiple cult-classic underground albums like Operation: Doomsday, Madvillainy, and MM..FOOD. Journalist S.H. Fernando Jr. has written a new biography of the influential rapper, The Chronicles of DOOM: Unraveling Rap's Masked Iconoclast, and he discusses his research with us ahead of his book event tonight at the Brooklyn Museum in conversation with Hanif Abdurraqib.

The Forgotten Veterans (Youtube, 2013)Searching for Tomorrow: The Story of Madlib and DOOM's Madvillainy (Pitchfork, 2014)Timeless Affairs: Madvillainy (Stepintotomorrow, 2023)MF Doom: a hip-hop genius who built his own universe of poetry (The Guardian, 2021)Contemporary musicians. On this week's pod, it's a deep dive into an album from one of our perennial favourites, as it celebrates 20 years. It's the turn of the MF DOOM and Madlib's classic 2004 album Madvillainy by Madvillain, a dense, psychedelic, colourful rap album that quickly cemented itself as one of the best rap albums of all time when it came out on Stones Throw that year. Why is Madvillain so important? It's the sound of two masters of their craft - Madlib deep crate-digging wizz of flipped samples which avoided the musical grid and DOOM's "tripping off the beat kinda" rhymes which defied expectation and form, and became endlessly quotable while retaining complex and comedic intent. Madvillainy is the sound of two elusive creatives ricocheting off each other's oddball styles with disorienting brilliance.Niall and Andrea discuss the album's gestation, recording, leak, samples, lyrics and mythology. In January, we hosted a Listen Closely listening party in the Big Romance in Dublin with this album. We're back after a long but necessary hiatus. And what better way to return than with....oh no. Welp, Kanye is back on the podcast, and even more treacherous than last we talked about him. Which is a shame, because College Dropout is a genuinely fun, and funny, album. With a clear potshot at Ye's recent history, Matt talks some albums that try to Make Hip-Hop Fun Again in Del tha Funky Homosapien's Both Sides of the Brain and Madvillain's Madvillainy (which also means this is the second pod appearance for the late, great MF DOOM). p.s. We actually recorded this one before our hiatus, so ignore any dated references.

This episode of Across The Margin: The Podcast presents an interview with Los Angeles-based writer Will Hagle. Will is a co-host of the Connecting The Classics podcast and a great deal of his work can be found on the webzine Passion of The Weiss. He is also the author of the excellent 33 ⅓ book dedicated to MF DOOM and Madlib's album Madvillainy. The book — which is the focus of this episode — celebrates Madvillainy as a representation of two genius musical minds melding to form one revered supervillain. A product of circumstance, the album came together soon after MF DOOM's resurgence and Madlib's reluctant return from avant-garde jazz to hip-hop. Written from the alternating perspectives of three fake music journalist superheroes — and featuring interviews with Wildchild, Cut Chemist, M.E.D, Walasia, Stones Throw execs, and many other individuals involved with the album's creation — Will's book blends fiction and non-fiction to celebrate Madvillainy not just as an album, but as a folkloric artifact. It is one specific retelling of a story which, like Madvillain's music, continues to spawn infinite legends. In this episode host Michael Shields and Will Hagle discuss both Madlib and MF DOOM's origin story while expounding at length what makes Madvillainy such a special and enduring piece of art. They explore the somewhat disputed stories on how MF DOOM and Madlib connected for the project, and dig into how unique it was that Madvillainy existed as an album that straddled the analog and digital eras. They celebrate the song “Accordion,” as one of the most unparalleled songs in hip-hop history, remark on Madvillainy's profound influence in modern music, and so much more.Grab a copy of Will Hagle's Madvillainy 33⅓ here — and learn more about Will's projects at his subtack. The name conjures mystery in the watch world as many horological enthusiasts recognize the name from social media as being synonymous with their personal "grail" watches, while also not knowing much if anything about the man behind the now famous instagram page. Fremstar, who though choosing to remain anonymous, is a true watch lover and collector in sense that he enjoys the hunt just as much as he enjoys sharing space and his pieces with those that share his passion. The episode is titled, Madvillainy, in honor of the classic avantgarde hip hop album produced by Mad Lib and MF Doom 19 years ago this Spring. There is a shared spirit between Fremstar and Doom. As luck would have it, two of Discord & Rhyme's most powerful villains have been turned loose for an episode that will strike terror into the hearts of men! This week, Rich and Mike take on the 2004 hip-hop classic Madvillainy, a team-up between MF DOOM, a rapper with a metal mask and a tragic, comic-book backstory, and Madlib, a DJ with eclectic taste and an unpredictable, artfully imprecise style. The album's 22 tracks unfold like a fever dream over just 46 minutes, with samples drawn from Bollywood, Brazilian music, Zappa, and Sun Ra crashing headfirst into snippets from old cartoons. And this is all presided over by DOOM, who packs almost unfair amounts of wordplay and meaning into every line. It may seem like chaos at first, but there's a method to Madvillainy, and it shows how hip-hop can contain the world.Cohosts: Rich Bunnell, Mike DeFabioComplete show notes: https://discordpod.com/listen/103-madvillain-madvillainy-2004Support the podcast! https://www.patreon.com/discordpod
