Episode 140: Your Audience is Your Book-Writing Superpower

Just One Simple Thing

Play Episode Listen Later May 6, 2025 8:24

Send us a textDid you know that as a writer who is building an audience, you have a secret superpower? It's one that not every writer unlocks, but has the power to enhance your writing journey AND create a built-in group of people invested in your success. Want to know what it is? Listen in on Episode 140 of Just One Simple Thing and find out! Many of you listening have a book to write. The book of your heart. The book of God's calling. As you write, you are also building an audience ... a community of people who believe in your message. And believe in you. You may think of your book as your own project...something you have to do alone. But what's the point in building a community if you can't take them along with you on your greatest journey? And when people feel like a valued part of something, they are invested in making it successful.Pick some ways from this list to involve your audience in your book project.Test out your content. Sharing some of the concepts and content of your book idea is a great way to see what is really resonating with your audience.Ask for examples. New concepts are easier to understand when there are concrete examples to go along with them.Get opinions on components of the book. Let your audience help you choose the title, subtitle, and cover art.Share parts of the journey. What did you learn about yourself or about God as you went through the process? Sharing these things makes your writer life more relatable, even to people who are not writers.Try a focus group. Get a few people together to read a chapter and discuss it with you. These are just a few ways that you can include your audience in your book project. And when it's time to launch that book, you'll have a whole group of people who are personally invested in you and the success of your book. Doesn't that sound a lot better than doing it all alone? ONE SIMPLE ACTION STEPPick one or two of these ideas and make a plan for including your audience. You don't have to do them all...a little can go a long way. And be sure to let me know how it works out for you! Thanks for hanging out with me here today. I hope these ideas are helpful to you. If you want some more encouragement on your writing journey, pick up a copy of my book, Moving Forward: Inspiration for the Go Getter Jesus Girl. You can find it on Amazon, and I'll put the link in the show notes.RESOURCES:Moving Forward: Inspirations for the Go Getter Jesus Girl - Whether you need to Dream A Dream, Make A Plan, Find Your People, or just Do The Thing, these practical insights from God's Word will inspire you to take the next step forward.++++++++++Are you tired from trying to share your God-inspired message while working your full time job? Do you wonder if it's worth it, or even possible, to build a ministry or business on the side?I have good news for you. It is possible. It is worth it. You can do it. When I was Vice President of Creative Services at Conseco, we were always out of literature for key products. In the insurance business literature is all you have to sell, so these outages would cripple our sales team. Out out of stock list was routinely close to 300 different items and climbing. While we had numerous meetings on the subject nothing ever changed. So I stopped talking about procedures and policy and asked a simple question "If our goal was a back order level of 100 what would we do?" Defining a specific target, instead of vague "get better" gave a focus to our discussions. Every day we knew exactly how far we were from our target. As an added incentive, I offered to take the print team to any restaurant in town if we reduced our back orders to 100  by September. 1. The date gave us the sense of urgency we needed to keep this in the forefront of our discussions. We kicked off every production meeting with a brief conversation about the back-order list and the ideas started flowing.  We instituted a "red flag" for any project associated with back order items. Every team, editors, designers, writers and account executives agreed if a red tag landed on their desk it was their first priority. Slowly the numbers started to improve;  We posted the daily results on the way so we could see our progress in real time. . On September 1, we went to lunch at Cafe Nora. There are several important lessons for small business owners in this story: Define your goals, with a specific time line If you are serious create and follow an action plan Track your progress Involve others, do not assume you can do it on your own.  We would never have succeeded with out the support of the printer, inventory team, and other managers.

Women's Empowerment Junkie's

Hi loves! In today's episode, Abbie and I discuss the vital topic of helping a woman in need leave an abusive relationship. Although Abbie didn't know this woman personally, she was quick to step in when approached for assistance. We talked about the importance of having a plan and "backup" in case things go awry. On the day of the departure, Abbie met the woman at her house to help her gather her belongings and leave safely. Thankfully, this woman had prepared ahead of time, ensuring that the process went as smoothly as possible. Leaving an abusive situation is inherently dangerous for anyone, especially for women. Abbie was proactive in informing the police about the situation, just in case, and she made sure the woman wasn't alone with her abuser. If you need help, please reach out—whether to a friend, an acquaintance, or anyone you feel comfortable asking for support. We are here for you. Remember, you are the one who can decide when and if the time is right for you to take action. Start creating a plan and gather your important documents so you can escape quickly when the moment presents itself. The woman she helped is a true warrior. She recognized her need for help, made a plan, and bravely asked a virtual stranger for assistance. Since leaving, she has not looked back. It is not easy, and making such a decision can be painful, and potentially dangerous. Please prioritize your safety and let someone know you need help. Thank you, Abbie, for being there and ensuring the woman's safety. And to the woman who left, we love and admire you. You are a warrior. If you or someone you know needs help, please reach out to the Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 or text BEGIN to 88788. Stay safe, loves.

2023 is coming to an end, meaning our 2024 New Year's Resolutions are just around the corner, but listen to this before you throw in the towel on your health goals this holiday season. Today, Jenn shares a new way of approaching your health goals so that you can feel your best going into the New Year. This time of year usually brings the “F it's” as Jenn likes to call them. Many people just throw in the towel, enjoy the holidays, ditch their health goals, and tell themselves they will start their New Year's Resolution in 2024. Typically that resolution only lasts about 2 weeks and then it fails, leaving people feeling discouraged or like they failed. During this episode, Jenn is taking a different approach to New Years resolutions and this holiday season. She talks about the small steps that you can now take in order to feel your best as you head into the New Year. She focuses on tangible things you can do while still enjoying the holiday parties and fun with friends and family. Jenn discusses the difference between the process and the outcomes of a plan and how to find joy in what you are able to do right now. Tune in to learn how to choose the thing that you can commit to right now and her new offer for a January 2024 program! The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, discussing wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. IN THIS EPISODE: ●  [6:23] Should you say F it until the new year or start now on your health goals?●  [8:42] What is the difference between consistency and intensity in relation to resolutions? ●  [11:13] Jenn discusses what she likes and dislikes about resolutions. ●  [15:22] Are dream boards helpful around the new year? Jenn shares her thoughts. ●  [17:18] How can you focus on the process vs. the outcomes of your plan?●  [21:08] What are habits that you can be doing that help you feel your best?●  [28:08] How to choose the one thing that you can be the most consistent with in your day to day life. ●  [30:19] How do you manage your goals while traveling or having time off?●  [32:50] Hear about Jenn's new January 2024 offer.KEY TAKEAWAYS: ●  [8:42] When we leave our goals until January, we are making a  commitment to an intensity that is very hard to maintain and to have any consistency with. ●  [12:35] Without a plan, what does it matter what our goals are? This is probably the reason that most people give up their resolution around the 2nd week of January. You must have a plan that helps you achieve your goal. Your plan doesn't have to be complicated or intense, it needs to be something that you can stick with and do in your everyday life. Your plan may be less “intense”, but when it allows consistency, that is where we make the shift from a short lived resolution to a commitment to ourselves and our focus for the year. ●  [23:08] Focus on one thing each day, whether that's compassion and grace, getting enough sleep, exercise, eating enough protein or fiber, pick one thing and if that thing happens during the day, celebrate and enjoy it, you did it! QUOTES: [8:03] Let's think about starting in January. We have this idea where we have to start on a Monday. The second Friday in January is known as “quitters day”. It stands to reason that we build up this thing, we intend to hit the ground running, and we can last about two weeks.” - Jenn Trepeck[9:30] “Thinking back to an episode called “You vs. the Diet Industry ", this is the time of year when everybody is telling you what you should or should not be doing to be healthy. When we leave it to the new year without a specific plan, we are more apt to try all of the things, and be swayed almost like shiny object syndrome, of all of the things that are out there and available. A lot of the time, what you're hearing about is great as a ‘next step'. Sometimes I describe it as stepping over $100 bills to pick up pennies. For example, a cold plunge can be awesome. But if we aren't giving our bodies the raw materials that it needs, if we aren't sleeping or eating properly, the cold plunge can only do so much. The $100 bill is the sleep. The $100 bill is the nutrition. So we want to set those foundations first.” - Jenn Trepeck[13:00] “A goal without a plan is just a dream.” - Jenn Trepeck[15:43] “I did a Nutrition Nugget last year called “Ditch the Dreamboard”, because I feel like we get stuck on these pictures and then if something shows up and it doesn't look exactly like the picture, we're like, no, that's not it. What if this is the stepping stone? What if this is the thing that gets us there, and by the way, what if ‘there' is so much bigger and better than the picture that we pulled and put on that dream board?” - Jenn Trepeck[25:18] There are times in life when ‘stretch goals' can be really helpful. I'm going to go out on a limb and say, this is not the time for that. This is the time for really easily attainable, seemingly small steps. Sticking with it is more important than what the ‘it' is.” - Jenn Trepeck[27:45] When we can learn something from this process, when we can say, “ok, that was not to plan and yet, it's all fine and here's what I learned about it.” It's still a win. Focusing on the commitment that we made to identify the wins, recognizing everything we are doing. And by the way, even if the thing didn't happen, but you can learn from it, to me, that's still a win. The trick is then to say, in thinking about it, why didn't it happen? What needs to exist the next time for the thing to happen?” - Jenn Trepeck[28:23] I've heard it once, I've heard it a million times, so I am calling everyone out right now. I say this with all the love in the world. What ends up happening is people say, “I just need to do it.” You know what's not helpful? Telling yourself you just need to do it. What needs to happen for it to be easier to do? Nobody wins from making this hard.” - Jenn Trepeck [35:48] “Remember that your health is not about what happens from Thanksgiving to New Year's. Our health is about the commitments that we make and the small steps that we repeat over and over and over. That's what we want to focus on. The small steps that we repeat over and over and over.” - Jenn TrepeckRESOURCES:Resolution Revolution of 2024 Curiosity Connect CallBe Like Bamboo Nutrition NuggetYou vs. The Diet IndustryNutrition Nugget: Ditch the DreamboardBecome A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries Instagram

In this episode of the Doing What Matters podcast, host Teresa McCloy shares her annual tradition of taking a whole day to plan for the year ahead. Teresa emphasizes the importance of living from rest, not rush, and how this planning exercise helps to create a life that truly matters. She walks listeners through the step-by-step process of planning for the year and offers practical insights and tips that can be applied to any business or personal life. Teresa starts by highlighting the significance of community and the power of doing life together. She expresses her gratitude for the listeners who join her on this journey and sets the stage for discussing the planning process for the year ahead. Using a giant 8 by 5 write-on wipe-off calendar, Teresa and her team spent several hours mapping out the events and appointments for the upcoming year. They color-coded different aspects of their business and marked reoccurring events, vacations, retreats, and marketing activities. This visual approach allowed them to see the big picture and set the foundation for their plans. Teresa emphasizes the importance of the "jar of pickles" analogy, where the big rocks are the essential elements that need to be placed in the jar first. By identifying these critical events and aligning them with their vision and goals, Teresa and her team were able to prioritize and ensure that they have a solid plan for the year ahead. She encourages listeners to order a big calendar to gain a visual perspective and begin the process of mapping out their own big rocks for the year. By taking action now and getting ahead of the planning process, they can enter the holidays and the new year with confidence and a clear direction for their businesses and lives. Lastly, Teresa provides a sneak peek into an upcoming community platform launch in January. Listeners are invited to join the community mailing list to be the first to receive updates and access to free content. This new platform will offer resources and support for those who want to live from rest, not rush, and use the real life process framework for creating a meaningful and purposeful life. In conclusion, Teresa's annual planning tradition serves as a reminder of the importance of intentional and strategic thinking. By dedicating time to plan for the year ahead, individuals and businesses can gain clarity, set priorities, and create a roadmap to success. So go ahead, order that big calendar, and start filling it with your big rocks for 2024. Your future self will thank you for it.   01:59 Plan for next year, fill calendar with events. 04:49 Schedule and events organized, color-coded for efficiency. 09:59 Bringing everything together to serve clients. 11:47 Calendar organized, confidence to move forward. 18:01 Summary: Use calendar to plan and prepare. 21:26 Join now for free content in 2024.   IMPORTANT LINKS: https://www.therealifeprocess.com/ https://www.therealifeprocess.com/join Coach Certification Link https://www.therealifeprocess.com/   Become a REALIFE Process® Certified Coach!   FREE Download: 4 Steps to Simplify Your Calendar Ready to uncover more time on your calendar?
