Ep 50: Being Gentle With Yourself

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 30, 2024 7:49

Today's episode is a prayer, an invitation to soften, to be gentle with yourself.  There's sometimes the belief–even if unconscious–that softening might transform someone into becoming weak or diminish their ability to be resilient. I've observed and experienced the opposite: that it's ignoring the body's invitation to soften that eventually leads to shut down and disconnection. The softening, the exhale…creates the opening.  I invite you to receive today's invitation if it resonates.   ----- More About Me: I'm a Resilience Coach, Embodiment Healing Guide, Angel Mama, and Birth Doula. I used to think that my healing journey needed to look a certain way and have a definite outcome. That eventually--no matter how long it took--I needed to rise out of the ashes like a phoenix then tell the world about it.  Sitting with the realness of my unpredictable, and sometimes messy healing journey has taught me that there is no model for what healing should look like. You are an original. Your journey will be a unique one. And by releasing the expectations around who you ought to become and by when that needs to happen, perhaps that creates room for some unexpected, imperfect beauty to unfold.   In this episode, I share about: The ways in which our society creates “models” for who or what we should be How those models impact our healing journey The liberation that becomes possible through being present with your own journey Accessing the unique wisdom that wants to emerge through you   ----- More About Me: I'm a Resilience Coach, Embodiment Healing Guide, Angel Mama, and Birth Doula. I consider myself a life-long learner, so it means a lot when I say that Compassionate Communication or Nonviolent Communication (NVC) has been one of the single most important practices I've learned. As my teacher, Steve Torma, puts it, Compassionate Communication isn't just a tool for communication but a shift in consciousness.    I've referred Compassionate Communication to clients of mine because it becomes a game-changer for ANY conversation or relationship. And today, we have the pleasure of hearing Steve Torma share more about Compassionate Communication and how it can benefit you and your relationships.  We discuss:  What Compassionate Communication or NVC is and some of its many benefits What violence looks like in conversations (it's not just physical!) How the “Dominator Culture” we're socialized in shows up in our self-talk and relationships  Why men will likely grieve differently from women The patterns/imbalances that may become prevalent in relationships between men and women How Compassionate Communication can help create inner peace, as well as bring empathy and healing to relationships    Steve Torma's Bio:  Steve (he/him) was born and raised on a family farm in Ashtabula, Ohio, and is a 25-year member of Earthaven Ecovillage. His ancestors are Hungarian and French Canadian.   Steve co-founded an intentional community in Ohio in 1980, where he lived until joining Earthaven Ecovillage in 1996. At Earthaven, he co-founded a thriving neighborhood, was president for three years, and has taught Nonviolent Communication for twelve years. In addition to his passion for community, Steve co-managed a natural foods co-op for 10 years, ran his own traveling bookstore business for over 20 years, and now teaches Nonviolent Communication and other relationship and community building skills through The REAL Center, which he co-founded in 2009.    As a lifelong peace, justice, and ecology educator and activist with over 40 years of community living, Steve has sought to integrate personal and social transformation in his own life, in the communities where he lives, and in the larger society. His passion for integral living and thinking has led him to study and experiment with a wide range of spiritualities, psychological systems, and social theories as they relate to creating a more just and sustainable world.   Steve has taught Nonviolent Communication for a variety of intentional communities, organizations, and regional gatherings, including Celo Community, The Mountain Retreat Center, Firefly Gathering, Southeast Permaculture Gathering, Organic Growers School, Kinnection Campout, LovEvolution Gathering, Compassion Camp, and many others.   Steve's Website: http://therealcenter.org/ Seve's Email: steve@therealcenter.org     The Resources We Reference: Book: The Chalice & The Blade by Riane Eisler: https://rianeeisler.com/the-chalice-and-the-blade-our-history-our-future/ Books: Nonviolent Communication by Marshall Rosenburg (and related books through PuddleDancer Press): https://www.nonviolentcommunication.com/shop/  The Mankind Project: https://mankindproject.org/ NVC Asheville: https://www.nvcasheville.com/   Earthaven Ecovillage: https://www.earthaven.org/ —   If you're curious as to what support might look like for you on your journey, here are some next steps to explore: 1. I had the pleasure of working with Tia during her pregnancy as her “space-holder,” resource-connector, co-strategist, and emotional healing guide. I've been excited to share our follow-up conversation because Tia's story is such a powerful example of what's possible when pregnancy and birth are supported by community—family, friends, and professionals who are equally competent as they are caring.    It's a model that doesn't simply center the pregnant / birthing person, but also makes them the director of their experience, and at the same time, allows them to feel safe enough, held enough so that they can surrender to the process.    The magic that unfolded in Tia's birth is typically reserved for fantasies. But it was real and it came after a fair amount of self-advocacy and intentionality.    I also want to acknowledge that when you've gone through a loss or fertility challenges, it may feel safer to go with the hospital care we've learned to accept as the norm. But if you've been finding that unsatisfactory, I hope Tia's story will spark ideas for the alternatives you have access to regardless of who you choose to be on your birthing team and where you choose to birth.   ------   Tia and I discuss: - Challenges she experienced receiving care within the hospital model - The ways she advocated for herself amidst push-back - Choosing a midwife and homebirth - Feeling supported by “prayers, friends, and angels” as she welcomed her baby earth-side   Links & Resources We Reference: - Bronx (Re)Birth & Progress: www.instagram.com/bxrebirthcollective  - Midwife Nubia-Earth Martin: https://birthfromtheearth.vpweb.com/  - Birth Doula, Jazzmin Brown: https://www.instagram.com/birthingfarah/  Tia's Bio: Tia DeShazor works in the performing arts as an actor, writer of musicals, and career coach for artists. Self-love is hard for most people. It isn't a practice that's encouraged in our culture. Instead, we're continually fed messaging about what's wrong with us and what we need to change to reach a certain standard.    Now, when you've gone through a loss or infertility diagnosis, self-love feels even more out of reach. And yet, it is THE single most important pathway to our healing and liberation.    This episode explores the ways in which we've been taught to disconnect ourselves from our own love, how this pattern shows up in different areas of our lives, including intimate relationships, and how to reclaim our connection with ourselves as a source of love and self-compassion.    **If today's episode resonates with you, please share it with someone else you think might benefit from it. With rules about what you need to do to make this the best year yet?    We tend to feel that entering the New Year is like entering a magical portal where everything needs to now be new, better, and different. But growth and healing don't operate that way. They move with a rhythm and cycle that may be different from the flip of a calendar from December  to January. Knowing this removes the unnecessary pressure that impacts your well-being.    In this episode, I'll help you to: Unpack some of complex emotions that show up at the end of the year and the beginning of another Understand how these emotions impact your goals for the new year and overall well-being And explore practices that may better support your own rhythm so that you can walk this earth with a greater sense of freedom, ease, and grace   **If this episode resonates with you, drop me a line at hello@nataleefacey.com to let me know.      And If you'd like some support on your healing or pregnancy journey, here are ways I can help: 1. Through working with clients for the past several years, and through doing my own healing work for even longer, this is one of the observations I've made: We sometimes get in the way of our own healing.   It isn't that we decide that we won't heal. It's that we unconsciously choose to stay where we are in the pain. It sounds irrational, but the reason behind it merits compassion.    The greatest gift I can offer you is the gift of your freedom. And I do so through making you aware of what influences you in the background, so that you liberate yourself to make conscious decisions instead.    In this episode, I share: What happens in the emotional body / subconscious that leads people to block or self-sabotage their own healing, so that even when we say we want something, our actions don't support our words  Ways that healing can be less daunting An upcoming group course that will support you in deepening your healing for the next few months with other Birth Warriors     If you're ready to step into your healing, here are ways in which I can support you: 1. I believe that we are spiritual beings expressed in physical bodies. It means that even after our babies have made their transition out of their physical bodies, they still exist in spirit.    A few months ago, I did a podcast episode reading excerpts from “Memories of Heaven” by Dr. Wayne Dyer (Ep 24). The book features stories from parents whose little ones had memories of being in heaven before they came here on Earth, including children who had made their transition prior due to a pregnancy loss, abortion, etc. I know, it's wild! But there were too many accounts from parents all over the world to deny that babies are also spiritual beings who aren't limited by a physical death. And even after they make their transition, our connection with them remains.    In this episode, I share some of the beautiful and magical experiences I've had with my little ones. I hope this encourages you to keep the connection open with your baby and still feel their love through the many ways they might send you reminders that they're still here.    With lots of love,  Natalee And here are some ways to get additional support while you're on your journey: Get on the Birth Warrior Mailing List to receive inspiration and resources for your emotional healing. I also share a piece that I wrote for my husband 3 years ago on Father's Day. It's a way for me to honor him publicly because so much of his support and love towards me is done in the background. He's the gentle warrior who has my back and helps to build my resilience as we move through this journey.    I hope you enjoy this episode. As a Birth Warrior you know that there are certain dates that are especially hard to work through: the anniversary of your baby’s estimated due date, the anniversary of the day they entered the world, and the anniversary of the day they left.    My son’s birthday was on February 14th and boy were my emotions high as I moved closer to the date! In the first year after his transition, I remember being so uncertain about what to do that I ended up doing nothing at all. I hated the gaping hole I felt afterwards, and so this year, I decided that I would absolutely do something to honor him. And I did. What I was left with was a sense of peace and even joyfulness. (FYI...I noticed I mistakenly said that Feb 14 was his "Angel-versary" during the podcast. It was actually in March when he made his transition. ie, when he became an angel. He was born on Feb 14)   This week’s podcast is an exploration into the MANY ways that not doing something to honor your baby ends up affecting you...and in actually, affecting all the spaces that require your presence. I walk you through what happens in your mind and body why that’s the case, and really accessible ways that you can honor your baby and have that experience contribute to your ongoing healing.  ---   If you’re looking to get to the next phase of your Birth Warrior Journey, here are ways that I can support you:   1. How do you love and care for yourself when you’re pregnant or think you might be pregnant? And how differently do you treat yourself or ask others to treat you when you’re not pregnant?    We’ve entered into the month dedicated to love and while romantic love is fab(!), our first episode looks at the differences in how we love ourselves (love as an action) and how we ask others to love us when we’re pregnant vs. when we’re not. And on a deeper level, how we might be holding love and care from ourselves when we’re not in the “pregnant club.”    We’re taught that we deserve love based on conditions—our ability to give something in return, ie. a baby. And so, when it’s “just us,” we either deprioritize our own care or may not feel that we have the same right to ask for what we need as we would if we were pregnant.    In this episode, I share how pregnancy inherently gives a greater permission to be loved and cared for and the differences you may experience after a loss. I share examples from my own pregnancy journey and some that might have snuck into yours without your knowing.   The truth of the matter is that you are worthy of love—pregnant or not, TTC or not, ready to try again or not. And if you do nothing else this month, allow yourself to be loved just because you exist.    ---   If you’re looking to get to the next phase of your Birth Warrior Journey, here are ways that I can support you:   Join the private Birth Warrior Facebook Community with others on their healing journey. This week’s topic on Ancestral Healing is not one that I’ve ever spoken to. And perhaps it was my ancestors themselves who inspired me to share this perspective with you.  As I am coming off of the heels on an Energy Healing training based in the ancient African wisdom, ancestral healing is ripe in my being.  The topic of connecting with ancestors might be a strange one for you. It certainly has been for me up until just a few months ago. And we often look at the traumas or imbalances we hold in our body as an “ancestral curse.” This episode invites you to create space for this new perspective: looking at the “curse” as the gift.  In this episode, I share the personal experience of trauma that has existed across generations in my family, my work / responsibility / privilege in clearing them, and experiences I’ve had being visited by my ancestors.  I hope this brings you clarity or curiosity. I hope it starts to fill pieces of the puzzle that have been missing for you. Endometriosis is a condition in which the tissue that normally lines the inside of the uterus grows outside the uterus. It often leads to debilitating pain and it isn’t uncommon for it to go undiagnosed for years—which was also Sophia’s experience. I consider Sophia to be in the Birth Warrior family because endometriosis has been known to make fertility more challenging.    To be an Endo Warrior is to dare to not simply live, but to live well even with the condition. In this episode Sophia shares her earliest experience with the condition at 12 years old, surgeries and treatments over the years, and the approach she’s now taken for reclaiming her sovereignty over her life and body.    If you’re also an Endo Warrior, I’m sending you so, so much love. Challenges around fertility and pregnancy activate an ancient wound within us—the fear of being ostracized from our tribe (whether the one we were born into or the one we chose through our partner), the fear of our partner replacing us with another, “more fertile” mate, and the fear of losing opportunities for recognition and upward mobility.    This ancient wound runs so deep that it operates on the subconscious level without our awareness. And yet, it’s one of the sources of panic and emotional distress around pregnancy. Because it causes emotional distress without our conscious awareness, it means that this ancient programming actually inhibits the body’s ability to be in an optimal state for conception and pregnancy.    In today’s episode, I share more on where this ancient wound comes from, how it continues to play out in modern society, and how you can actually TRANSFORM THIS INTO A GIFT to regain our sense of sovereignty on the conception and pregnancy journey.    As a heads up, this conversation is gonna be one of the heart-to-heart ones. Ep 12: Using Music & Voice for Your Healing

A few weeks ago during one of our Birth Warrior Wednesday sessions, I had the absolute pleasure of chatting with Shoshana Vogel, whose many gifts to the world include being a musician and vocal instructor. Shoshana also uses music, sound, and play in her work to support the brain development of babies. Because I intentionally used music and voice as part of my baby’s therapy when he was in the NICU, I was eager to learn from Shoshana, ways that Birth Warriors could employ music on their own healing journey.  And trust me, there was so much wisdom that poured out of our conversation: intuitive wisdom, wisdom from our own experiences using music and voice to heal, and from the experiences of clients.  As Shoshana shared, when we bypass the emotions we’re experiencing, they come back up in the body. Music gives us the ability to create space for the emotions  and create a path for their healing. “That allowance of the feeling is part of the path to repair.”    More About Shoshana Shoshana Vogel grew up on Staten Island, where her musicianship and movement background were fostered. She studied ethnomusicology at UC Berkeley, where she learned Ghanaian drumming, sang in the gospel choir and furthered classical guitar studies.  In her graduate work at UCLA, she studied yoga, movement, and ethnomusicology, while helping students to develop their critical thinking skills in performance and critique. Specific work with babies, children and brain development followed, focusing on child directed play. Shoshana is a classically trained vocal instructor and guitarist. She spent three years as the K-6 music teacher at Our Community School charter, as well as the 2014-2015 school year as music and movement instructor for Kindergarten classes at Staten Island Community Charter School. She was the 2016-2017 music teacher for early childhood education at Creative Steps at the University Settlement Society and is on the faculty at the Bloomingdale School of Music, teaching early childhood music.  In addition, since late 2015, she has been working as a teaching artist at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. Shoshana is Music Together and Orff Level I certified and continues to teach children and their parents in music and movement curriculum.  She is proud to have created a summer 2017 pilot program between the Bloomingdale School of Music and the Bloomingdale Family Head-Start Program that continues to thrive. Today’s episode is an interview with Elizabeth Ortiz, the founder and CEO of EllisBearyLoved, a nonprofit that distributes comfort boxes to families grieving the loss of an infant. Elizabeth created EllisBearyLoved in 2018 after the loss of her son Ellisander Lorenzo Valerio, who passed away due to omphalocele, eight days after his birth.    Elizabeth and I met a year ago at the annual Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness Walk in Brooklyn. I love the way she fearlessly talks about her son and ensures that his time here isn’t forgotten. During our conversation, Elizabeth shares her experience giving birth to Ellisander and having to prepare for the worst, a subsequent high risk pregnancy, leaning on family, friends, and faith as part of her healing, and the work she’s been doing to support other families after their loss.     If you’re inspired by Elizabeth’s story and would like to stay in touch, here’s how to do so: Via Instagram: @ellisbearyloved; Via Facebook: Facebook.com/Ellisbearyloved; and Via Email: Ellisbearyloved@gmail.com   And donate to EllisBearyLoved (https://gf.me/u/y3fkks) so Elizabeth can continue her work supporting families as they grieve the loss of an infant.    ----   And to stay in touch with me, join the private Birth Warrior community on Facebook. I hear this question so often from Birth Warriors: “How do I know when it’s time to try again?” I decided to make it one of the recent topics for our Facebook Live within the private Birth Warrior community. This is a recording of that live session.    Listen to this episode to learn what the markers are for getting to a place of “yes” in terms of trying again. And whether or not you’ve checked the boxes for those markers, as long as you’re focusing on conception, it’s important to know what other factors you should consider to reduce your risk for pregnancy complications.    I share my own rainbow pregnancy experience and the anxiety I felt after actually confirming my pregnancy. There are a host of negative outcomes that could occur during pregnancy while holding stress, anxiety, fear, and trauma in the body.    I want to ensure that you’re not only aware of these, but that you also have a game plan that will  support you in thriving in your next pregnancy!  ------ Let’s stay in touch, Birth Warrior! September is NICU Awareness Month, a time when we honor NICU babies, their families, and the health professionals that support them.  If you're a Birth Warrior, I also want to acknowledge that the NICU may hold memories of painful experiences for you. It’s certainly where I experienced most of the trauma after my second pregnancy with my preemie (I share a bit of my personal story in this episode as well).   You'll find today's topic especially useful if: You’re a Birth Warrior who may be having a high risk pregnancy, and as a result, your baby may possibly spend some time in the NICU after its birth You already experienced being in the NICU with your angel baby and DREAD having to go through that experience again in your next pregnancy Your baby is currently in the NICU, everything is scary and overwhelming and you’re not sure how you can best support your baby and stay sane through it all!   Knowing how to navigate uncertainty gives us the confidence to show up with strength and grace. And being prepared for undesirable outcomes (such as having to be in the NICU) also removes the fear of not knowing what to do if it becomes your reality. In this episode, I share strategies for getting the support that you need, for contributing to your baby's wellness, and staying sane through it all.  Please share this episode with a Birth Warrior in the NICU or who have fears around surviving the NICU in the future.  --- Let's continue the conversation in the private  Birth Warrior Community on Facebook / https://tinyurl.com/yb9c6xus. We are all inspired by happy endings. After my pregnancy loss I would listen to the stories of women/birthing people with successful subsequent pregnancies as a reminder that this was possible for me too.   In this episode, we hear the story of one of the Birth Warriors I've had the pleasure of working with. Katie went through two years of trying to conceive, two years of fertility treatments, two failed IUIs, and of course, a lot of frustration in between. She is now the proud Mama to a beautiful baby boy.   What I love about Katie’s story is not just that she had a successful pregnancy, which is such a gift in and of itself, but also that in the process of preparing her body for her next pregnancy, she reconnected with herself and nature and the Earth on a deep and spiritual level. This new relationship and sense of wholeness is something that she will bring with her as she parents her child and moves in the world.    Let's continue the conversation in the private  Birth Warrior Community on Facebook / https://tinyurl.com/yb9c6xus. Shame and guilt are two of the most difficult emotions to overcome after a loss or infertility diagnosis. They hit at such a tender, tender place. And because whatever we feel guilt or shame around, we tend to feel safer keeping it a secret, these difficult emotions fester under the surface. But staying in shame and guilt can have a negative impact on our emotional balance, which can then negatively impact the conception and pregnancy journey.    As a continuation from Ep 5 where I introduce the scale (or ladder) that our emotions exist on, I dig deeper into guilt and shame here, and how to finally start releasing them. We do so by changing the way we look at them and how we look at ourselves.   If you're intrigued by what you hear in today's episode, let's continue the conversation in my private Birth Warrior Community on Facebook / https://tinyurl.com/yb9c6xus.
