BlazeTV host Alex Stein and Blaze Media digital strategist Logan Hall join the show to discuss Javier Milei, Argentina's newest president. Milei is a self-described "anarcho-capitalist" who defeated the country's current economy minister, Sergio Massa, leaving the world stunned. Milei vowed on the campaign trail to sever ties with his country's top trading partners, Brazil and China, stating that he would not "do business with communists." Milei is against abortion, has insulted Pope Francis, questioned the death toll under Argentina's brutal dictatorship, and asserts that humans are not causing climate change. Over the past year, The Media Leader has been championing three key issues facing the media industry: declining trust in media, sustainability, and the talent crisis. Those issues have frequently been discussed in this podcast and our coverage this year. At last October's The Future of Media conference, we held a debate on what we should champion and those were the topics chosen by the audience. And in just a few days at The Future of Media this year, it's time to debate the most important aspects of media and advertising to zero in on for progress in 2024. To preview this year's event in London, columnist and media agency founder Nick Manning joins Jack Benjamin and Omar Oakes to unpack the key issues facing the media industry. The trio discuss whether progress has been made in the past year on trust, sustainability, and talent, and Nick makes his case for why he believes effectiveness is at the core of all issues facing media.“I have a long-held belief that the only solution to the lack of trust in the media ecosystem from a client point of view is in proper effectiveness measurement; that requires absolute transparency," he said. The group also takes a look at the latest drama at GB News, the forthcoming Telegraph sale, and what now for ads on Netflix with the exit of commercial boss Jeremi Gorman. ---This episode was edited by our production partner Trisonic.Visit The Media Leader for the most authoritative news analysis and comment on what's happening in commercial media. After a postponement and cancellation because of the COVID-19 pandemic, LA AutoMobility and the LA Auto Show will be back later this year at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Collectively, the automotive industry can't wait. Plenty of other auto shows didn't occur last year and won't until later this year. But organizers of the Los Angeles show, the first major industry event of the season, decided to offer a glimpse into the future. The 2021 Toyota Mirai was discussed during the recent LA Auto Show virtual Media Day. A virtual media gathering with representatives from many carmakers was recently held, and The Weekly Driver Podcast was part of it. Co-hosts Bruce Aldrich and James Raia listened to several presentations and follow-up question-and-answer sessions. We even submitted a few questions that were answered. The LA Auto Show will be held Nov. 19-28. In the meantime, on episode No. 175 of The Weekly Driver Podcast, we'll hear from representatives from Magna, Toyota and Volkswagen. Magna International is a Canadian mobility technology company for automakers. It produces automotive systems, assemblies, modules and components supplied to BMW, Fiat-Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Mercedes, Volkswagen and Tesla. The 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 was introduced during the 2021 LA Auto Show virtual Media Day. Toyota's presentation is the introduction of the 2021 Mirai. It's one of only three mainstream hydrogen fuel cell cars available in the United States. LA Auto Show: EVs on the horizon In the ever-expanding electric vehicle segment, Volkswagen's latest offering is the ID.4. It debuted in late 2020 in Europe and in early 2021 to North American customers in early 2021. It's the fully electric crossover SUV under the Volkswagen brand. The German manufacturer is marketing the ID.4 as a high-volume, mass-market electric vehicle — a car for “the millions, not the millionaires." We'll hear VW's presentation, too. Please join Bruce and me for this virtual presentation hosted by the Motor Press Guild. It's an audio-only preview of the pending LA Auto Show. The Weekly Driver Podcast encourages and appreciates feedback from our listeners. Please forward episode links to family, friends and colleagues. And you are welcome to repost links from the podcast to your social media accounts. The idea of more eyeballs on more content works for us. Support our podcast by shopping on Amazon.com. The most important story in the world right now is how real the chance of war with North Korea is — and how cataclysmic such a war would be.Part of the reason the risk of war is so real is that our understanding of North Korea is so sparse. "The Hermit Kingdom" is a world unto itself; a land of deprivation, of lunacy, of tyranny, of delusion. We have no diplomatic relations, no trade, no cross-cultural exchanges. We don't understand Kim Jong Un, we don't understand his people, and they don't understand us. And so, ignorant, we lurch towards the possibility of nuclear war built atop mutual miscomprehension. The best view we have into life in North Korea is Barbara Demick's Nothing to Envy: The Ordinary Lives of North Koreans. Demick was the Los Angeles Times bureau chief in Seoul and Beijing, and she found herself obsessed with this country she couldn't cover and couldn't understand. So she began talking to the people who had left it, the refugees who escaped across the DMZ. She began asking them to reconstruct their lives, to tell her what it was like, to make everyday life in North Korea intelligible. And they did. They told her what it was like to grow up, and to fall in love, and to go to school, and to have dinner, and to flee. They told her what it was like to build new lives, to remember past friends, to know their family was in a place they could never visit again, to hear the rest of the world fear and pity the place they had once called home. This conversation is about North Korea, but it's also about North Koreans — about what it's like to live in the most closed society on earth, about what they know and don't know of the outside world, about how their existence can be both ordinary and extraordinary, about what would happen to them if there was a war. And this is a conversation about what we need to know about North Korea, about how the country's past informs its present, about what Demick would tell Trump if he would just listen.
In a special Olympics-themed episode of Worldly, Yochi, Jenn, and Zack look at how global politics will shape next year's Winter Games in South Korea in a way that hasn't been seen since the height of the Cold War. The International Olympic Committee has already banned Russia because of a massive doping scandal, and the nuclear standoff with North Korea could make some countries jittery about sending athletes to the games. Add it all together, and you have the potential for an Olympics like no other.Plus, Jenn confesses to a passionate love of figure skating, Zack argues for taking the world's guns and giving them to Olympic biathletes, and Yochi makes the case for why skeleton is the only sport you should watch.
Chang Rae Lee's books include “Native Speaker,” “Aloft,” and “The Surrendered,” for which he was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize in Fiction. His most recent book is “On Such A Full Sea,” a cool, sci-fi dystopia. It was published in 2014. His novels tackle some of the most important themes in American life today, including immigration, life after war, and even the divided Korean Peninsula. He was born in Seoul, South Korea, but moved to the U.S. with his family at the age of three. His home country has been in the news a lot lately. And we'll be hearing about it for more cheerful reasons in February, when South Korea hosts the 2018 Olympic Winter Games. He spoke to Vox's Todd VanDerWerff for this episode of Vox Media's "I Think You're Interesting."

Mike is out of town this week, much like he was back in 2006 when he attended the Media Preview for Expedition Everest at Disney's Animal Kingdom. To celebrate the 10th Anniversary of this ride, we replay our interview with Animal Kingdom's Lead Designer, Imagineer Joe Rohde. It's fascinating to hear him speak about the ride nine months before it's grand opening. He talks about the storyline, the ride system and yes... the infamous Yeti. We'll also play Mike's on-ride audio from his first experience with Expedition Everest. It gave birth to a famous catch-phrase that still lives on in 2016! All this and much, much more!
