Welcome back to Just For This. Each week, host Rabbi Liz P.G. Hirsch interviews women in leadership about women and leadership. Inspired by the story of Esther, we feature powerful stories of women who stand out in their fields, who have stepped up just for this moment. This week, we are joined by both Yochi Rappeport and Hallel Silverman. Yochi Rappeport is Executive Director of Women of the Wall, where she advocates for the right of Jewish women of all denominations to pray, wear prayer shawls, and read from the Torah at the Western Wall (Kotel). Women of the Wall is also a long-time grantee through the YES (Youth, Education, Special Projects) Fund, WRJ's philanthropic arm. Hallel Silverman is a leading content creator for Liberal Zionism across social media as @justhallel and a prominent figure in Israel's protest movement for democracy. In this moment when Israel is under continued threat, we stand with the people of Israel and must remember that the Jewish people are one people. We discuss the journeys that led Yochi and Hallel to Women of the Wall, the parallels between the fight for women's inclusion in religious spaces in Israel and the United States, and the importance that personal connections play in organizing. This episode emerged from a private gathering in The Hague in the fall of 2024 with a small group of people who live in Israel — both Jewish and Palestinian, Jews and Palestinians who continue to share life. We're pleased to invite you now to overhear this particular conversation, with the permission of all involved. It centered around the matter of intergenerational trauma and healing — in a land in which the traumas of two peoples are terribly, inextricably intertwined. Yochi Fischer is a historian. Loaay Wattad is a lecturer, translator, and editor focused on children's and adolescent literature in Arabic and also in Hebrew. It is a gift to experience the friendship between them, as well as the struggle. This, and the passionate interaction with others in the room that follows, holds complexity and nuance and persistent humanity that news from this part of the world rarely conveys. We were brought together by the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute.Looay Wattad is a Palestinian lecturer, researcher, translator, and editor and a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Sociology and the School of Cultural Studies at Tel Aviv University. He is a member of the Maktoob translators' circle, a group that translates works of literature from Arabic to Hebrew. He is the editor-in-chief of the Hkaya, a web platform centered around children's literature.Yochi Fischer is a historian and the deputy director of the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute, a senior research fellow at the institute, and head of its Sacredness, Religion, and Secularization Cluster. She also leads its Intellectual Journeys program. Her current research focuses largely on religion and secularization — she also does work on memory and history, and the connection between research and creativity.Special thanks to Michael Feigelson, Shai Held, Rebecca Plumbley, and Philip Pieters of the Toussainthuis.Find aFind an excellent transcript of this show, edited by humans, on our show page.Sign yourself and others up for The Pause to be on our mailing list for all things On Being and to receive Krista's monthly Saturday morning newsletter, including a heads-up on new episodes, special offerings, recommendations, and event invitations.

On our newest episode, Yochi talks with Jenifer Fernandez Ancona, the co-founder and vice president of Way to Win, about how the GOP crackdown on abortion and voting rights means that Democrats, not Republicans, are now the party of freedom — and why progressives are betting millions of dollars that the argument will stick.

Too many of us have a mother wound story to tell. A mother wound is often manifested when a mother, whose unhealed personal trauma, be it verbal abuse, emotional abuse, abandonment, caused the mother to adopt toxic coping strategies that developed into character flaws. This character flaws manifest in many ways… it can be an unhealthy way of communicating, emotionally abusive on the child, over controlling, manipulation, constant criticism, guilt trips and neglect. Simply put, if a daughter internalizes her mother's unconscious beliefs (which is some subtle form of “I'm not good enough”) then she has her mother's approval but has in some way betrayed herself and her potential. However, if she doesn't internalize her mother's unconscious beliefs in her own limitations but rather affirms her own power and potential, she is aware that her mother may unconsciously see this as a personal rejection. For 41 years, LW didn't know about Yochi - her older half sister's existence. Finally at the age of 50, Yochi came to America and demanded that LW be told about her. They shared the same father and both had emotionally abusive mothers - LW's mother was codependent and Yochi's mother a narcissist. In 2008, at the age of 40, LW (born and raised in NY) met her half sister (raised in Israel) and they have been the best of friends ever since. This is quite a story.https://lonerwolf.com/healing-the-mother-wound/https://www.harleytherapy.co.uk/counselling/the-mother-wound-under-mothered.htmhttps://upliftconnect.com/the-mother-wound/Yochi's Art - https://www.yochiyakiravin.com/Yochi's Instagram- https://www.instagram.com/yochiyakiravin/LW's Music- https://lisayves.com/
In a special Olympics-themed episode of Worldly, Yochi, Jenn, and Zack look at how global politics will shape next year's Winter Games in South Korea in a way that hasn't been seen since the height of the Cold War. The International Olympic Committee has already banned Russia because of a massive doping scandal, and the nuclear standoff with North Korea could make some countries jittery about sending athletes to the games. Add it all together, and you have the potential for an Olympics like no other.Plus, Jenn confesses to a passionate love of figure skating, Zack argues for taking the world's guns and giving them to Olympic biathletes, and Yochi makes the case for why skeleton is the only sport you should watch.
