At the heart of The Prophets' vision are “The 24 Essential Supply Chain Processes.” What are they? Find out, and see the future yourself. Click here In this episode, we get real about a topic that doesn't get nearly enough attention in automotive: the strain on supplier relationships. With tariffs, lead time cuts, and constant disruptions, the old “just send the RFQ and hope for the best” approach simply doesn't hold up anymore. That's where Supplier Relationship Management (SRM) comes in—and not just as a tool. We're talking about SRM as part of the procurement strategy. Our guest, Achim Gatternig, Senior Manager for Procurement Projects at Magna, knows exactly what that looks like. He walks us through how Magna approaches Supplier Relationship Management (SRM) in a way that's built for today's supply chain challenges — and tomorrow's.And it all starts early. Before the first quote request goes out, Magna teams are already narrowing down a fit-for-purpose list of suppliers. They're not just matching parts but aligning capabilities, volumes, and timelines to strategy. The goal? Fewer surprises, better results, and stronger long-term relationships. But it's not just about smart planning—it's about real-time visibility. Achim shares how Magna gives suppliers monthly scorecards tracking quality, logistics, and delivery accuracy. It's not about policing—it's about creating conversations based on facts, not feelings. And when crisis hits? That data becomes gold. Whether it's a tariff shift or a plant fire, SRM gives procurement leaders the clarity they need to act fast. Achim walks us through possible scenarios of how the right information at the right time could help companies avoid cost hits, move tooling, and re-strategize without chaos.Of course, not everyone's on board. Achim gets candid about the challenges of pitching SRM to skeptical execs. His take? Show them what it costs to make decisions in the dark and then what's possible when you don't.From pushing ESG requirements down the chain to spotting supplier risk with external data to using AI to manage information no human team could handle alone—Achim shows us what modern procurement leadership really looks like. And his advice for anyone thinking about SRM? Don't overthink it. Just start. Pick the right system, make it fit your world, and give your team the clarity they'll need for whatever comes next.Themes discussed in this episode:Why supplier relationship management is the hidden driver of procurement strategyHow Magna leverages SRM to reduce risk and improve sourcing decisionsWhy SRM is no longer optional in automotive procurementHow SRM tools help teams respond faster during supply chain disruptionsWhy early supplier alignment is more valuable than late-stage negotiationThe real cost of not having supplier data when a crisis hitThe need for a single, shared view of supplier data across teamsFeatured on this episode: Name: Achim GatternigTitle: Senior Manager of Procurement at Magna InternationalAbout: Achim is Senior Manager of Procurement at Magna International, leading global procurement teams for complete vehicle manufacturing projects. What's the secret to securing big wins in the automotive industry? According to Guillermo Cano, Chief Customer Engineer at Magna International, it all starts with early customer collaboration. Instead of waiting for contracts to be awarded, Guillermo and his team invest in relationships early, working alongside customers to develop smarter solutions from the start. Sure, it's a risk—there's always the chance the business goes elsewhere—but the payoff is undeniable. He tells the story of a once-hesitant customer who, after three years of open communication and problem-solving, didn't just come around—he nominated Magna for a supplier award. But collaboration isn't just external—it starts inside the company. Breaking down silos, aligning engineering and R&D, and fostering teamwork are just as crucial as customer relationships. In an industry that moves at breakneck speed, time is either your greatest asset or your worst enemy. Getting in early means fewer late-stage design changes, fewer supply chain surprises, and, ultimately, better results for everyone.Guillermo also dives into the power of technology in driving efficiency—from advanced CAE studies that improve production quality to AI-driven defect detection that reduces costly errors. But even the best tech is useless without strong communication, and that's where he offers some of his biggest lessons. Technical skills might get you in the door, but the ability to listen, connect, and collaborate is what sets future leaders apart. And in a rare moment of vulnerability, he opens up about the importance of mental health in automotive leadership—a topic often overlooked in high-pressure environments. He shares his personal experience with burnout and why prioritizing well-being isn't just good for individuals but is also critical for effective leadership. At the end of the day, great results don't come from machines; they come from people.Themes discussed in this episode:How early customer collaboration creates a strategic advantage for suppliersThe risks and rewards of investing in relationships before business is awardedHow breaking silos leads to faster innovation and better program executionThe power of active listening in understanding customer needsHow Magna leverages technology to reduce development time and improve qualityWhy communication skills are just as important as technical expertise in supply chain leadershipThe importance of mental health in high-pressure automotive rolesFeatured on this episode:Name: Guillermo CanoTitle: Chief Customer Engineer, Magna InternationalAbout: Guillermo is an experienced automotive engineer and leader with over 18 years in the industry, specializing in product development, R&D, and project execution. In this episode of the Work in Progress podcast, we begin a three-part series examining the manufacturing comeback in the United States, the resulting surge in job creation, and the types of skills workers need to get those jobs. In the series, we explore how the nation's employers are finding, training, and retraining the talent to fill as many as 3.8 million jobs over the next eight years. Manufacturers say they are already having trouble filling those jobs. Episode One of The Manufacturing Comeback focuses on how large employers are addressing the shortage of skilled talent. Building a Talent Pipeline I recently traveled to Minneapolis to attend The Manufacturing Institute's Workforce Summit 2025. There I spoke with Mark Rayfield, CEO of Saint-Gobain North America and CertainTeed, and with Paul Myles, senior manager of Government Workforce Development and Training Programs at Magna International. In the podcast, Rayfield and Myles discuss how while the demand for manufacturing jobs in America is surging, finding skilled talent to fill these roles is a growing challenge. Unlike manufacturing jobs of the past, these jobs are often tech-focused. That means manufacturing employers are competing with other industries that are also looking for a tech-skilled workforce. We discuss innovative recruitment methods, effective partnerships with educational institutions, and creating career pathways for people from all backgrounds. Behind the Manufacturing Resurgence The recent surge of manufacturing construction and hiring is being fueled by the infusion of federal funding through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act enacted in 2021, the CHIPS and Science Act enacted in 2022, and private funding. To better understand how the manufacturing comeback is reshaping the workforce, I speak with Gardner Carrick, chief program officer for The Manufacturing Institute, which is helping employers figure out how to build a strong talent pipeline. Also joining this part of the conversation is Yustina Saleh, managing director of Workforce Innovation for The Burning Glass Institute. Importantly, we look at the ebbs and flows of manufacturing hiring and how jobs have changed over the past several decades. We also examine why it has become more difficult to find workers interested in manufacturing careers, despite the fact that they are often good-paying jobs. You can listen to the entire conversation here, or wherever you get your podcasts. You can also find our podcasts on the Work in Progress YouTube channel. The Manufacturing Comeback This three-part podcast series is a robust conversation about an industry that is once again looking for workers. Next week, in Episode Two, we turn our attention to how smaller manufacturers are attempting to find and train new workers. This series is made possible through support from The Manufacturing Institute. As a nonprofit journalism organization, WorkingNation partners and collaborates with outside organizations to make possible our mission of telling stories about solutions to today's workforce issues.

This Day in Legal History: Posse Comitatus Act Passed On June 18, 1878, the U.S. Congress passed the Posse Comitatus Act, a significant piece of legislation that shaped the relationship between the military and civil authorities. The Act made it a felony to use the Army to enforce domestic policies without explicit authorization from Congress or the Constitution. This law emerged from the Reconstruction era's complexities, particularly the federal military's role in enforcing laws in the Southern states post-Civil War. The term "posse comitatus" translates to "power of the county," and the Act aimed to reinforce the principle that civil authorities should maintain law and order without military involvement. The Posse Comitatus Act reflected a commitment to preventing military overreach in civilian matters and preserving democratic governance structures. This principle has influenced various legal and military policies over the years, including modern discussions on the military's role in domestic security. The Act underscores the balance between maintaining national security and protecting civil liberties, a balance that remains a cornerstone of American legal and political thought.Fisker Inc., an electric-vehicle startup, filed for bankruptcy after halting production of its problematic Ocean SUV. The company's filing in Delaware lists assets between $500 million and $1 billion and liabilities between $100 million and $500 million. This bankruptcy protects Fisker from creditors while it plans repayment.Henrik Fisker, known for designing BMW and Aston Martin cars, founded Fisker Inc., his second EV venture to face bankruptcy. His previous company, Fisker Automotive, also went bankrupt in 2013. Fisker Inc. went public in 2020 through a SPAC merger, raising roughly $1 billion and partnering with Magna International Inc. for vehicle manufacturing.Production of the Fisker Ocean SUV began in November 2022 but was plagued by missing features and software bugs. Influential YouTuber Marques Brownlee's negative review in February further damaged the company's reputation. Fisker produced over 10,000 vehicles but delivered fewer than 5,000 to customers. The company tried partnering with franchised dealers but faced significant financial difficulties, warning in February about its uncertain future. Although it secured $150 million from a lender, a potential deal with an automaker fell through. Magna International, a partner, halted further production of the Ocean SUV. Fisker's bankruptcy highlights broader challenges in the EV market, with several other startups also filing for bankruptcy amid slowing sales in the U.S. and Europe.Troubled Electric Vehicle Maker Fisker Files for BankruptcyUnion members at Amazon.com Inc. have voted overwhelmingly to align with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, a major U.S. labor organization, in a move that could significantly impact staff contract negotiations. About 98% of the Amazon Labor Union (ALU) members supported this partnership, aimed at securing better jobs and working conditions for Amazon employees. The ALU, which achieved a historic win in 2022 by organizing workers at an Amazon facility in Staten Island, faced setbacks in subsequent elections and internal conflicts. The union struggled to bring Amazon to the negotiating table. However, ALU President Chris Smalls and 15 other officials reached an agreement with Teamsters President Sean O'Brien and his team in Washington. The Teamsters represent approximately 1.3 million people. This collaboration between the ALU and the Teamsters signals a significant step forward in labor organizing efforts at Amazon, potentially increasing pressure on the company to engage in meaningful negotiations with its workers. Amazon did not immediately respond to requests for comment outside normal business hours.Amazon Union Allies With Teamsters in Big Labor AdvanceThe EPA's new limits on PFAS in drinking water are a positive step but more comprehensive regulations are needed to manage the release and disposal of these harmful chemicals. At a recent conference, stakeholders including parents, firefighters, and farmers discussed the need for broader measures to eliminate nonessential PFAS uses and enforce stricter waste management practices.CDC data shows that reducing PFAS in drinking water correlates with lower blood levels of the chemicals in residents, validating the EPA's efforts. However, the current rules do not prevent the release of PFAS into water or apply to private wells, affecting millions of people.Environmental advocates emphasized the necessity of treating PFAS as hazardous wastes under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). The EPA's recent designation of certain PFAS as hazardous under the Superfund law aids cleanup efforts but falls short of comprehensive waste regulation. Proper disposal methods are critical to prevent further contamination, yet data on PFAS waste disposal is limited due to insufficient regulation.Participants called for more stringent discharge permits under the Clean Water Act and quicker implementation of hazardous waste rules. PFAS, widely used in industries like semiconductors and battery production due to their stability and resistance to damage, require robust management to prevent environmental and health risks.Examples of contamination were highlighted, including high PFAS levels from military bases causing serious health issues. The EPA's database on waste transfers shows significant amounts of PFAS-contaminated materials being sent to incinerators and other facilities, underscoring the need for better waste tracking and management.Advocates stress that eliminating unnecessary PFAS uses and implementing strong regulatory measures are essential steps to protect communities and the environment from long-term PFAS contamination.PFAS Drinking Water Limits Praised but More Regulations SoughtIn the ongoing litigation over Johnson & Johnson's (J&J) allegedly cancer-causing baby powders, a new legal battle has emerged over attorney-client privilege. Plaintiffs' lawyers accuse J&J of misusing the bankruptcy process to evade liability and are pushing for the crime-fraud exception to force the company to disclose internal communications. This could reveal J&J's strategies to limit liability in around 61,000 talc-related cases. The litigation involves J&J's use of the "Texas Two-Step," where it transfers liabilities to a subsidiary, which then files for bankruptcy. This maneuver has been met with controversy and legal challenges. Plaintiffs' attorneys argue that J&J's actions are fraudulent attempts to avoid liability and are calling for these communications to be made public to bolster their case.In a recent development, the plaintiffs are also seeking to disqualify some lawyers representing J&J and to prevent the company from proceeding with an $11 billion global settlement plan. This settlement, which requires approval from 75% of the plaintiffs, has faced opposition from some plaintiffs' firms.Despite J&J's efforts to resolve the litigation, the plaintiffs' legal team argues that more needs to be done to ensure justice for those affected by the contaminated talc products. They are also challenging J&J's use of bankruptcy as a tactic to force settlements and are pushing for the court to invalidate J&J's attorney-client privilege in this context. The outcome of this legal battle could significantly impact the strategies used in large-scale product liability cases, particularly those involving mass torts and bankruptcy.J&J's Talc Litigation Saga Gets Attorney-Client Privilege TwistThe IRS should adopt a remote-first work model to attract top talent and enhance operational efficiency. The COVID-19 pandemic proved that remote work is not only viable but also desirable for many employees, particularly in the tech sector. As the IRS continues to modernize with advanced technologies like AI and machine learning, it needs to recruit top-tier tech talent. Offering remote work can help attract this talent by allowing employees to work from anywhere, increasing job satisfaction and expanding the pool of potential applicants. The Treasury Department has found that job postings highlighting flexible working arrangements attract more applicants. Additionally, the IRS can save on overhead costs by reducing its physical office footprint, which remains significant despite many employees working remotely part-time. A remote-first approach would also help the IRS compete with private sector tech firms, which have successfully used remote work to attract employees despite offering lower salaries. This flexibility would enable the IRS to draw a diverse workforce, fostering a variety of perspectives and ideas. Existing policies limiting remote work to within 200 miles of an office need reform to maximize employee flexibility. Security is a critical concern, given the sensitive nature of taxpayer information the IRS handles. However, research indicates remote workers are often more aware of cybersecurity practices. To support a remote-first model, the IRS would need to invest in tech infrastructure and rework management and accountability measures to focus on outcomes rather than hours worked. Embracing remote work is essential for the IRS to continue modernizing and improving taxpayer interactions.IRS Should Embrace Remote-First Culture to Recruit Top Talent This is a public episode. Steven Jenkins, Vice President of Technology Strategy, Magna joined Grayson Brulte on The Road to Autonomy podcast to discuss Magna's partner approach to developing autonomous driving systems. The conversation begins with Steven discussing how Magna is approaching safety systems. Magna is one of the only real few suppliers that has the entire set of enablers to make it happen and do a complete system. So we are thinking about the whole system as a package rather then individual pieces of the package, and that allows us to develop these market leading products that deliver the enhanced safety and convenience for the driver. – Steven Jenkins The software defined vehicle will unlock continuous updates to the vehicle, unlocking new features and functions. Eventually these software updates will be able to upgrade vehicles to enable autonomous driving functionality depending on their sensor package. As vehicles become more advanced with higher levels of autonomy, the debate around driver monitoring creeps into the conversation and ultimately leads to the question; when is the right time to introduce driver monitoring? That question ultimately comes down to the OEM. While the OEM makes that decision, Magna is working on a series of in-cabin monitoring solutions that benefit the driver and the passengers. This approach will benefit their OEM customers as they introduce higher levels of autonomy. Magna is approaching autonomy as as a step-wise approach. In a kind of autonomous scenario you are really taking a kind of huge leap in terms of what you can do with a vehicle, but you are not taking as big as a leap when it comes to technology. A lot of things are pretty similar. – Steven Jenkins A hybrid market that comprises of both robotaxis and personally owned autonomous vehicles could emerge at some point in the future. How the economics of these models emerge will depend on the companies that make the product available and take the risk from a financing perspective. Either way, Magna will be there from a technological standpoint to help their partners and customers usher in the future of autonomy. Wrapping up the conversation, Steven shares his opinion on the future of mobility. Belinda Stronach- The biggest SportsBetting And business lesson is vertical integration Belinda Stronach is a Canadian businesswoman and former politician. She is from Canada: Dates guys like Bill Clinton Canada. Stronach is the daughter of Frank Stronach, the founder of Magna International, a major Canadian automotive parts company. Belinda Stronach first gained prominence in the business world through her involvement in Magna International. She held various executive positions within the company, eventually becoming its president and CEO. Under her leadership, Magna International grew to become one of the largest automotive parts manufacturers in the world. In addition to her business career, Stronach also ventured into politics. In 2004, she joined the Conservative Party of Canada and was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the riding of Newmarket—Aurora. She served as a member of the Canadian Parliament from 2004 to 2008. During her time in politics, Stronach held positions as Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development and Minister of Democratic Renewal and Minister responsible for Democratic Reform. Belinda Stronach's decision to cross the floor from the Conservative Party to join the Liberal Party in 2005 attracted significant attention and controversy in Canadian politics. She later ran for the leadership of the Liberal Party in 2006 but was unsuccessful. Since leaving politics, Stronach has been involved in various philanthropic activities and serves as the chairman and president of The Stronach Group, a company that operates horse racing and entertainment venues. She wants to become a major force in Horse Racing as her family owns 5 race tracks including Santa Anita, Del Mar, Pemlico, bought some horse tracks from the Bidwell family (Cardinals NFL) XBet Vertical integration in business refers to a strategy where a company expands its operations by acquiring or merging with other businesses involved in different stages of the same industry's supply chain. It involves combining multiple levels of production and distribution under a single ownership or control. There are two primary forms of vertical integration: Forward Integration: This occurs when a company acquires or merges with businesses that are closer to the end consumer or the distribution stage of the supply chain. For example, a manufacturer acquiring a retail chain to sell its products directly to consumers or a movie production studio owning a theater chain to exhibit its films. Backward Integration: This form of integration involves acquiring or merging with businesses that operate earlier in the supply chain, such as suppliers or raw material producers. For instance, an automobile manufacturer acquiring a tire manufacturing company or a coffee chain buying coffee plantations. The main motivations behind vertical integration include gaining better control over the supply chain, ensuring a consistent supply of inputs, reducing costs, improving efficiency, enhancing competitiveness, and capturing a larger share of the value chain's profits. By integrating vertically, a company can streamline operations, eliminate intermediaries, and exert more influence over the quality, pricing, and availability of inputs or outputs. However, vertical integration is not without challenges. It requires significant investments, expertise in different areas of the supply chain, and the ability to manage diverse business functions. Additionally, it may raise concerns related to monopolistic practices or anti-competitive behavior, as companies that control multiple stages of the supply chain can limit access to other players and potentially disadvantage competitors. Overall, vertical integration can be a strategic move for companies looking to strengthen their market position, gain control over critical resources, improve coordination, and achieve synergies across different stages of the supply chain.

Matteo Del Sorbo, Executive Vice President Magna New Mobility, Magna International joined Grayson Brulte on The Road to Autonomy podcast to discuss why not all mobility solutions work in all markets and Magna's mobility investments in India. The conversation begins with Matteo discussing how Magna approaches autonomy. Our approach at Magna here is to develop robust and reliable features that fulfill the needs of the market, our customers, the regulations, all the while we still have a careful eye on the future and mega trends that impact mobility and in the end, autonomous driving. – Matteo Del SorboThis approach allows Magna keep their pulse on the future of mobility as the company continues to operate a profitable revenue generating organization. It's a wise strategy that allows Magna to engage in an autonomous vehicle market that is now consolidating around a handful of winners who are well financed and poised for long-term growth. We are going to play a very important role in autonomy and ADAS. – Matteo Del SorboIt's not just autonomy and ADAS, Magna is also embracing micromobility and energy while deploying solutions in emerging markets including India. India is a market of 1.4 billion individuals with a GDP that is projected to grow 6.5% this year. I have always said that not all solutions work in all markets. I think micromobility is a perfect example. Certain solutions work in well in one geographic region, but not in another. You need to really understand the market, the needs, the people that drive the right solutions. – Matteo Del SorboTo understand the mobility market in India is to understand the infrastructure challenges in the urban environments and why micromobility works. Battery swapping is allowing companies to operate electric mobility solutions in India to overcome the constraints of limited electricity reliability and the overall infrastructure challenges in the country. With a mandate from the Indian Government to convert roughly 200 million two-wheelers from gas to electric, the opportunity for battery swapping is enormous. This is where Magna thrives as the company knows how to scale and engineer world-class products. Magna is rapidly scaling operations with their customer Yulu Mobility/Yulu Energy, they are also an investor. Currently Yulu Mobility has has 10,000 electric scooters in operation which Magna is helping to scale by the tens of thousands over the next year.We are going to be adding 10,000 units every month for the next 12 months. By the end of year we will have over 100,000 units. – Matteo Del SorboWhile the recipe to scale operations in India is there, Magna is also looking to expand their footprint to other emerging markets where their expertise can provide value and shareholder return. At the end of the day, you have to solve a problem. Just bringing a bunch of kick scooters to a city because they are cool will not solve problems, it will not give you scale, the market, people demand a scaled quality product. – Matteo Del SorboTo achieve success in these new emerging markets Magna has teams focused on new emerging mobility technologies will be that will impact these markets. http://www.pauleichenberg.com (Paul Eichenberg) has his finger on the pulse of the automotive industry. With an engineering background and three decades of automotive experience, the former Vice President of Corporate and Strategic Planning at https://www.magna.com/company/company-information/magna-groups/magna-powertrain (Magna Powertrain, Inc). is now the head of his own consulting firm, which advises auto executives around the world on how to make the most of an era of disruption and the rise of electric vehicles. In eight years at Magna, Paul was responsible for three times growth and says this role put him “at the forefront of the major disruptions” taking place in the automotive industry today. In this episode, Paul talks about the unique set of supply chain obstacles that Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) and Electric Vehicle (EV) organizations face, the unexpected speed of progress in new battery technologies, and the type of supply chain leader that the electric vehicle industry demands. Themes discussed in this episode:  Significant advantages that new entrants into the EV market have over traditional automakers who are entering the space.  The challenge that the complexity of new EV technologies presents for executives in ICE organizations How operating without historic ICE supply chain systems creates challenges for EV organizations  Why non-automotive electronics manufacturers entering the EV market are at a disadvantage and what they can do to help bridge the gap Why ICE and EV components are “an apples-to-oranges comparison”  Automotive leadership for the EV age https://auto-supply-chain.captivate.fm/24-processes-free-downlaod (At the heart of The Prophets' vision are “The 24 Essential Supply Chain Processes.” What are they? Electrification presents them with a whole new set of challenges and complexities that most of them are unprepared for, Paul says. [5:18] Deceptively simple: Building an electric vehicle requires only 60 percent of the manufacturing footprint of a gas-powered car. Yet EV manufacturers do not have the luxury of the business systems developed in the past few decades to support ICE vehicle production. [6:53] ETA unknown: Paul says that forecasting vehicle release dates are a “huge problem” for EV manufacturers because they don't have the value chains that their ICE counterparts do to make forecasting reliable. [7:50] Joining forces: Companies like Panasonic benefit from years of automotive experience on top of their other verticals. Paul points to the collaboration between LG and automotive component manufacturer https://electrek.co/2021/03/30/electric-vehicle-spotlight-evs-magna-international/ (Magna International) as an example of players without this experience connecting to an organization in the automotive field as a way to compensate.   [10:24] Raising the power bar: Ten years ago, the industry's goal was less than $1000 per kilowatt hour for battery technology.
