When he was working as a manager at Imo's Pizza, Michael Devlin put up a pretty good front. He was personable. Well read. Friendly. But back at his apartment, Michael was a different man. He was rude and quiet. His son, Shawn, appeared to have adopted Michael's habits. Neighbors said they never saw Shawn smile. But what they didn't know was that Shawn wasn't really Michael's son. His name wasn't even Shawn Devlin. It was Shawn Hornbeck. But the truth wouldn't come out until much later, when another boy, Ben Ownby, went missing.  Then Brandi tells us about a kidnapping that shook Long Island, New York. It was July 4, 1956. Betty Weinberger's one-month-old infant, Peter, fell asleep in his carriage on the patio. As the little boy slept, Betty went inside the house. When she came back out a few minutes later, her baby boy was gone. Betty's husband later found a ransom note at the scene. In it, the kidnapper demanded $2,000 in exchange for the baby. The kidnapper warned the Weinbergers not to involve the police, but the couple felt they had no choice.  And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: “Monster next door?” by Malcolm Gay for the Riverfront Times “One search, two boys found: The Missouri miracle 14 years ago,” by Tim O'Neil for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch “Michael Devlin stabbed in prison with ‘ice pick,'” by Todd Frankel for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch “I am still too scared to tell my mom and dad, ‘kidnap' creep admits,” by Susannah Cahalan for the New York Post “Shawn Hornbeck,” Crime Museum “MIchael J. Devlin,” entry on Wikipedia In this episode, Brandi pulled from: “Held for Ransom” by Michael Dorman “Mark of a Murderer” by Mike McAlary, Esquire “JUSTICE STORY: Tragic kidnapping of Long Island infant shattered two young families” by Robert Dominguez, New York Daily News “Weinberger Kidnapping” FBI.gov “Vincent LaMarca” wikipedia.org   YOU'RE STILL READING? Haydn: Missa in tempore belli. Patricia Wells, sopran, Gwendolyn Killebrev, alt, Alan Titus, baryton og Michael Devlin, bas. Norman Scribner Koret og et lejlighedsorkester. Dirigent: Leonard Bernstein. Today I'm joined by a man who has personally built multiple seven figure e-commerce stores, and generated over £5M in sales in the UK, and $14M for his clients in the US. Welcome to DMR, Michael Devlin. [You can find Michael over at MassConversions.com.] On this episode of Digital Marketing Radio we discuss launching a physical product in the physical sphere, with topics including: Are the digital marketing tactics that work for selling physical goods very different compared with the tactics used for selling digital goods or services? And when’s it best to sell goods from your own website, and when should you sell goods from somewhere like Amazon? What kind of goods are really good to be selling on Amazon at the moment? And what are some first steps to start selling on Amazon? Do you market from other traffic sources to Amazon? How important is creating a launch sequence? How do you capture your customer's details so you can market to them again in the future? What are your thoughts on the future of selling on Amazon? What about e-commerce in general - are there there any other up and coming opportunities to be aware of, or will Amazon still be the big beast? [Tweet ""You don't have to invent a product to be innovative." @MassConversion #MarketingQuotes"] Software I couldn't live without What software do you currently use in your business that if someone took away from you, it would significantly impact your marketing success? Screenflow [Video editing software for Mac] What software don't you use, but you've heard good things about, and you've intended to try at some point in the near future? Manage By Stats [Amazon selling software] My number 1 takeaway What's the single most important step from our discussion that our listeners need to take away and implement in their businesses? If you're looking to get into e-commerce, do not procrastinate. Do not fear the unknown. Get your idea. Don't worry too much about it, don't overthink it and just go for it. It's a simple as that.

I recently spoke with Michael Devlin, adviser to Urban Seed (www.urbanseedvegas.com) We covered a variety of topics related to agribusiness and food policy. Urban Seed’s mission is to become the premier supplier of locally grown, low carbon impact, fruits, vegetables, and micro greens in the local market using proprietary and innovative technology & processes with modular, easily expandable structures which provide opportunities for unlimited growth. Their philosophy is to prioritize the “Made in the USA” concept.  Their proprietary modular system provides superior quality and larger volumes in the same footprint allowing Urban Seed to grow 30 to 50 times the amount of produce than that of traditional farming without use of chemicals or pesticides. Facilities will be as close to the customer base as possible to reduce cost of transportation & delivery which can run as much as 75% of total operating costs for traditional farm to market operations. 1) We went though a description of the traditional timeline from food to fork.  Most produce travels 1,500 miles from farm to fork. - High carbon footprint - Nutritional values falls over time - Shorter shelf life = high food waste - Lower freshness = bland taste 2) We laid out a broad gamut of food production challenges: - Burgeoning world population, - Water scarcity, - Global warming, - High pesticide use. - Lack of access to fresh produce is highly correlated to rising BMI - especially in poor communities. 3) Opportunities - Where are some of the investment opportunities in the food world? - We spend time defining the concept of urban farming 4) Finally, we describe what Urban Seed does - Farm to fork in 12 hrs - No chemicals - herbicides or pesticides - All non-GMO seeds (why is this important?) - Grown under glass with no supplemental light - very power efficient. - 30x crop yield vs traditional farming - Uses 90% less water - Extremely Profitable - Each 6,500sf greenhouse generates $1mln annual revenues and ~$500k EBITDA - Tax benefits for buildings / urban settings?Jobs?

In a year when Derry-Londonderry takes centre stage as the UK City of Culture, Helen Mark steps out into the city's back garden to explore the hidden gems of the Inishowen Peninsula. Located at the northernmost tip of Ireland where it meets with the Atlantic Ocean, and with Lough Foyle to the east and Lough Swilly to the west, Inishowen is rich in history, heritage and landscape, with more than its fair share of undiscovered delights. Helen Mark begins her journey at the Glenevin Waterfall with American, Doris Russo. Now in her 90s, Doris first visited Donegal almost 20 years ago when she fell in love with the area and bought Glen House with its adjoining land and beautiful, yet inaccessible, waterfall. Helen hears how Doris took it upon herself to clear the brambles and undergrowth that blocked the route to the waterfall and so began a project that would take years to reach fruition with the help of the local community and volunteers. There are very few people in the area now without a friend or relative who has been involved in the Glenevin Waterfall including farmer, Michael Devlin, who tells Helen of his own experiences of the waterfall as a child. At the northern tip of Inishowen Helen meets writer, Cary Meehan, to visit the atmospheric Bocan Stone Circle at Malin Head. Cary has made a promise with herself to visit a sacred place every week and feels that these are places that give people a divine connection that there really are no words for. Heading back along the shores of Lough Foyle, Helen stops off for a kayak trip out on the waters with Adrian Harkin before making her way back to the border. Before she leaves Inishowen, Helen makes one last stop to meet Dessie McCallion who takes Helen to one of his favourite hidden gems, a woodland near the village of Muff where he walks and feeds the red squirrels who call the woodland home. Presenter: Helen Mark Producer: Helen Chetwynd.
