Content warning: this episode discusses pregnancy, fertility and abortion. When Michelle Battersby announced her pregnancy to her Instagram followers, there was no pretty picture with two lines, no ultrasound, no baby bump. Instead, she shared something deeply personal. Something that, as a founder who is often looked to for career inspiration, she felt compelled to be open about. And that was that she'd previously had two abortions for her career. We know that the mental load of family planning when it comes to career can start a lot earlier for women. Is a long university course worth it if I want to have a baby at around 30? Do I go for that promotion when I'm pregnant? What are the most flexible careers for mothers? How long should I be at the one company before I start trying to conceive? The list goes on…But, Michelle's take – that is deliberately delaying motherhood for her career – isn't one that's often spoken about publicly, so it's fair to say her story and honesty caught my attention. Here, we talk the wild ride that was bringing Bumble to Australia, how she felt when she pressed post on her pregnancy announcement, navigating her business Sunroom alongside pregnancy, and how her badge of honour is changing.---THIS WEEK'S PARTNER This episode of Ready or Not is brought to you by us, Witching Hour co-hosts Loz and Lu. Michelle Battersby is, by her own admission, a career girl. After flying through uni on a rowing scholarship, she got a “good” job at an esteemed company - but at 24, after doing everything “right”, she wasn't happy. And so she took a leap of faith, and started working with an app that, at the time, was very new to Australia - Bumble. The rest, as they say, is history.  In 2023, Michelle is the co-founder of another app that is disrupting the status quo. Her tech start-up, Sunroom is revolutionary, not just because it's a new way to look at monetising content, but because women and non-binary people are the centre of it. It was founded by women, for women, in a very male-centric industry. Michelle has been incredibly honest about the way Sunroom (and work generally) has been her primary focus. As an ambitious woman, she wanted to put her company and her career first. Which is why when she fell pregnant, she wasn't necessarily excited - in fact, she was terrified.  On this episode of Under The Gloss, Michelle joins Phoebe in the Vogue studio to unpack and unpick the past eight years; why Sunroom has been the best and hardest thing she's ever done, the things she's sacrificed along the way for her career and of course, why she chose to publicly announce her pregnancy with a video diary that documented her complete and utter terror at falling pregnant. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to a Quick Take episode of the Dream Job Ready podcast! Are you feeling unsure about your career choice? Starting to feel like you're in the wrong job or wrong industry? My guest from Episode 31, Michelle Battersby, who's past roles include Country Manager at Bumble and CMO at Keep it Cleaner, admits she's had thoughts like that in the past and acted on them, and admits she expects to get them again at some point in her career down the line.In this bite size episode, I share some of Michelle's advice from her long form interview in Episode 31. Here's the transcript:Dane Sharp (Host):Are you starting to feel like you’re in the wrong job or working in the wrong industry? You're going to want to keep listening to this episode...Hello and welcome to a Quick Take of the Dream Job Ready podcast. This 1 minute 40 second snippet comes from Episode 31, with guest, Michelle Battersby, who was then-CMO of online fitness company, Keep It Cleaner. Michelle has had a busy career with several key job and industry changes, so during the interview I asked her why, what and how she made the leap from HR roles in the finance and banking industry to being Director of Marketing for the Woman centric dating app, Bumble.Michelle gives simple and relatable advice, which helped her get the opportunity to first connect with Bumble founder, Whitney Wolfe Herd.Side note... You would have likely heard Whitney’s name mentioned plenty in the news this year after she took Bumble public on the Nasdaq in February, which made her the world’s youngest self made female billionaires at age 31. A good person to connect with! Here’s Michelle recalling how that career change went down:Michelle Battersby (Guest): I remember having this inner feeling - just this voice that kept saying to me, ‘you're way better at something else than this. There is something out there that you're meant to be doing that you're not doing’. I just had this feeling that I hadn't found the right thing yet, and then it was as soon as I began acknowledging those inner thoughts and feelings that opportunities started coming to me. I do hate giving this advice, because it sounds really, you know, “woo-woo” and it's not really theoretical or tangible, but I really do believe what you put out is what you get back, and as soon as you start looking for things and start talking to people honestly about what you're going through and the fact that you you're looking for something else and you're not sure what it is, and you're exploring other ideas, it doesn't matter if you speak to one person or 10 people, that one person or all those 10 people, could remember what you've said and come back to you at some point. And that's exactly what happened for me, and I ended up being offered the Bumble opportunity, which may be once in a lifetime, but it was a friend that I'd spoken to and she remembered me saying I wasn't sure I was enjoying what I was doing, and the next time we spoke three months later she came to me with an introduction to chat to Whitney [Wolfe Herd]. You have absolutely nothing to lose in talking to people or putting things out there, you only have something to gain.If you'd like to connect with Dream Job Ready via our Socials:- YouTube / Search 'Dream Job Ready'- LinkedIn / https://www.linkedin.com/company/dreamjobready- Facebook / @dreamjobready- Instagram / @dreamjobready- Twitter / @dreamjobready We welcome your feedback and questions via Email dreamjobreadypodcast@gmail.comAnd if you'd like to financially support this podcast series, please make a contribution via https://supporter.acast.com/dream-job-ready-1 Music: ‘Funky Sunday’ composed and performed by Mark Matthews. Michelle Battersby. A literal powerhouse of a human. One of the hardest working people I know, intelligent and astute to the nth degree, a business woman who has a logical, pragmatic and highly considered approach to work and life, and well most things. Headhunted to helm the Australian arm of Bumble, Michelle took the biggest risk of her life when she left her HR job in corporate finance not knowing what was ahead, if the role was legitimate or if she was making a mistake. It paid off of course and by the end of that gamble Michelle grew the brand in Australia to 3 million users and launched Bumble in 4 other countries. If it wasn't already evident, Michelle is brave and courageous and she left Bumble on a high to take on her current role as the Chief Marketing Officer of Keep it Cleaner here in Melbourne (lucky me!). Michelle is a woman who empowers other women, she is incredibly generous with her time and advice to other women in business and entrepreneurs and has become somewhat of an unofficial mentor to many, including me! Enjoy her insights and advice in today's podcast where we talk about supporting other women, confidence vs self-doubt, anxiety, competing (with yourself) and the expectation of others, high risk for high reward and everything in between.

Michelle Battersby is the classic definition of an intrapreneur. While she doesn't technically own her own business, she was tasked with the huge responsibility of starting and expanding US born dating and networking app, Bumble right across Australia. Headhunted by founder Whitney Wolf, Michelle backed herself and quit her job after a conversation with Whitney that she says completely sold her on the brand's mission to support and empower women. She's been on a whirlwind adventure ever since, and in just two short years has achieved 2 million app registrations with no signs of slowing down.
