Mike Royko was an outspoken Chicago journalist, who in the 1960s through 1990s railed against the political machine and championed the cause of the underdog with the same zeal he displayed toward his beloved Chicago Cubbies.Mitchell Bisschop's roughly two-hour performance as Royko serves as a reminiscence for those of a certain age, and as an entertaining summary of our recent history for those of a younger generation who might not have first-hand familiarity with events related to the quickly fading recent past.

In this Fast Five Short we discuss in our Lightning round how Walmart's recent hiring of a full-time meteorologist sparks a nostalgic conversation about childhood dreams and career aspirations. As the hosts explore their early ambitions, one reveals a love for meteorology rooted in a childhood fear of storms combined with a passion for retail. This lighthearted exchange transitions into a spirited debate about the best fried chicken restaurants, with Popeyes emerging as the clear favorite for one host, much to the surprise of the other who has never tried it. The discussion also touches on the upcoming Black Friday shopping season, highlighting Target's exclusive Taylor Swift merchandise and the discerning habits of shoppers. Finally, the hosts delve into the growing trend of meat snacks, contemplating their personal preferences and experiences with jerky and meat sticks, revealing a humorous take on the textures and flavors that appeal to them. Takeaways: Walmart's recent hiring of a full-time meteorologist highlights the intersection of retail and meteorology. Anne's childhood aspiration to be a meteorologist stemmed from a love for storms and retail. Chris reminisced about wanting to be a columnist like Mike Royko during their youth. Both speakers discuss their preferences for fried chicken, with Popeyes being the clear favorite. The conversation shifted to Black Friday deals, specifically Target's exclusive Taylor Swift merchandise. They also debated the appeal of meat sticks as a snack, revealing differing opinions on texture. In this Special Episode we take a view of Chicago History -- Cicada style. For in the world of entomology, 2024 was a big year.  As two cicada broods The Great Southern Brood, which emerge every 13-years and is the largest of all periodical cicada broods and The Northern Illinois Brood which emerges every 17-years, coincided in 2024.  In places like Springfield, Illinois one could witness both broods in a cacophony of ear-shattering buzzing.   The last time these broods coincided was in 1803, the same year Fort Dearborn was built near the lakefront at a bend in the Chicago River -- what is now the intersection of Wacker Drive and Michigan Avenue.  For those paying attention walking through this intersection will see rectangular brass inserts marking the boundaries of Fort Dearborn. It turns out the arrival of the 17-year cicadas offers an interesting metronome for the study of Chicago history.  These emergences have come at momentous times throughout the city's history, and coincide with at least two events memorialized as stars on the Chicago flag. Join the Windy City Historians as we buzz through 221 years of history to see how cicadas left their mark on Chicago's history.  Links to Research and Historic Sources: The New York Times had a fabulous article called “Maps of Two Cicada Broods, Revealed after 221 years,” by Jonathan Forum Biography of United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Botanist Harry A. Stu Levitan welcomes Madison native Doug Moe for a conversation about his new biography of the UW's first director of women's athletics, Kit Saunders-Nordeen. On June 23rd 1972, President Richard Nixon did two things with historical significance. In a meeting with chief of staff H. R. Haldeman, he told Haldeman to call FBI director Pat Gray and tell him to stay the hell away from Watergate because it was a CIA matter, which of course it was not. This was the so-called ‘smoking gun' tape which quickly led to Nixon's resignation when it was released a little over two years later. And, with a more appropriate nod to his re-election campaign, Nixon also signed the Education Amendment Act of 1972 with its 37 words and four commas now known as Title IX – “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”The impact of Title IX on women's athletics at the University of Wisconsin – and the critical role that Katherine Kit Saunders played in defining that impact -- is the business that occupies Doug Moe in his latest biography, “The Right Thing To Do – Kit Saunders-Nordeen and the rise of Women's Intercollegiate Athletics at the University of Wisconsin and Beyond.”It is a book the native Madisonian and 1979 graduate of the UW is well-equipped to write. Doug Moe is, after all, one of Madison's most prolific and honored journalists and authors. He's written 12 books, including Tommy Thompson's autobiography, biographies of legendary Chicago newspaperman Mike Royko, Madison builder Marshall Erdmann and Madison jewelers and philanthropists Irwin and Robert Goodman, a history of the fabled but now defunct UW boxing program and more. In his 18 years as a daily columnist with the Capital Times and Wisconsin State Journal, he wrote more than 4,000 columns, which is about 3 million words, and continues to write a monthly column for Madison Magazine and a weekly blog for its website. He is so active, in fact, that his website isn't doug moe dot com, it's doug moe dot org. Speaking personally, in my work as a historian of Madison, I know I have benefitted greatly from several of his books, and am very much looking forward to one he's working on now – the autobiography of State Senator Fred Risser. It is a great pleasure to welcome to MBB the great biographer of modern Madison, my friend Doug Moe.

The path to riches is not often associated with journalism, but in the case of George Ade, writing for Chicago newspapers was his road to wealth and fame. Ade, (1866-1944) who was born and raised in Kentland, Indiana, attended Purdue University and then came to Chicago to work as a reporter in the heydays of newspapers. Today George Ade is rarely remembered, with his books out of print, and decades since his musical comedies were performed. But from the 1890s to the early 20th century, he was compared to Mark Twain, a friend of his, and had not just one, but two hit plays on Broadway at the same time. Ade earned so much money from his successful books, plays and syndicated newspaper columns, he built an English Tutor on a 400-acre estate in Indiana, named Hazelden. There Ade threw big parties and was visited there by U.S. Presidents such as Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and Calvin Coolidge. In fact, Taft began his Presidential campaign of 1908 from Hazelden. Ade's name lives on through his philanthropy, like the donation of 65 acres, with fellow alum David E. Ross, to Purdue University, for a football stadium in 1924, which is now known as Ross-Ade Stadium. What was true then about Ade's writing is also true now, and that is Ade's stories are hilarious. His final book “The Old Time Saloon” (1931) is laugh-out-loud funny and a recent edition from the University of Chicago Press is annotated by Bill Savage. Bill Savage, Ph.D. is a professor of English at Northwestern University and our guide through not only the work “The Old-Time Saloon: Not Wet - Not Dry, Just History” and this podcast. Dr. Savage paints a picture of the Chicago Ade knew from the high-class Saloons downtown to the more seedy establishments frequented by his friend, Finely Peter Dunne, whose literary bartender, Martin T. Dooley, delighted a nation with his quips. Writers like Ade and Dunne started out as journalists, and along the way captured the rhythms of speech and the vernacular of the working man, and in doing so gave birth to a new type of literature. A style practiced later by authors such as James Farrell, Nelson Algren, Mike Royko and Stuart Dybek. We hope you will enjoy this dive into Chicago's literary and drinking past. It was Greg Maddux's last year in his first stint with the team, Ryne Sandberg's last really good season, and some guy named Sammy Sosa showed up from the White Sox. Relive the glory days of Hector Villanueva, Gary Scott and the day Jim Bullinger made history in a good way! The Cubs had a huge win against Pissburgh in July and then Mike Royko (rightly) took a big dump all over it in the Tribune the next day. This Mind-Espresso is about reducing bias and fostering better decision-making featuring the work of Nobel prize winning behavioral economist Daniel Kahneman from his book Thinking, Fast and Slow. Kahneman argues that humans are not logical decision-makers and that we are overly-influenced by emotion and biases and that our lives are run by assumptive, automatic thinking which causes us to constantly make poor decisions. It’s a talk I’ve probably given over 100 times in different forms. It also details a useful thinking framework designed by long-passed Chicago Sun-Times Mike Royko. (I believe I'm the first person ever to link Daniel Kahneman to Mike Royko. :). Hope you find this useful. Legendary Chicago newspaperman, radio host, and author Rick Kogan joins us in the Booth to share some great stories and lively conversation. He's a big fan of our show and has listened to a number of past episodes that he's told us are terrific. High praise from a master interviewer who was a close friend of Studs Terkel and is carrying on in his brilliant tradition. Rick says he may be our only guest so far who has gotten drunk in the original Booth One at the Pump Room back when real movie stars sat there. Check out the list here. Rick talks about growing up in a remarkable family - his father, legendary author and journalist Herman Kogan; his mother, reporter and publicist Marilew; and his brother, major league rock band tour manager Mark. He tells us an amazing story about Mark, Elvis and Sinatra. Their parents met at Riccardo's, a restaurant behind the Wrigley Building, and he is named Rick (not Richard) after the owner. A legendary hang out for newspaper people, artists, and musicians, our producer spent some time there back in the day just to eavesdrop on the always interesting conversations. He talks about the kind of people who were hanging around his parents' apartment growing up. A list that includes Studs & Ida Terkel, Nelson Algren, Marcel Marceau, and Mort Sahl. Can you imagine? We learn about his early career driving a cab, then moving to Spain and eventually submitting a travel piece about Dover, England to the Tribune, which sold for the then thrilling price of $160. He returned to Chicago and began an incredible career in journalism. Gary announces that on August 1st, the National Comedy Center will open in Jamestown, NY, the birthplace of Lucille Ball. Check out this video that will make you want to visit. Frank is an expert on Lucy, and will probably be going to represent. One of the cool things is that on a touch screen, you create a "sense of humor profile" to personalize your experience. They have acquired the archives of a very impressive array of comedians, including Lenny Bruce and George Carlin. Gary asks Rick about favorite guests on his radio show. He starts with Studs Terkel, who was not just the all-time great interviewer, but also a really fun guest. They talk about the WFMT Studs Terkel archive and Rick describes a favorite - Studs interviewing a very young Bob Dylan. You don't want to miss his spot-on impression of Studs and hilarious summary of the episode. The digital audio of this is not yet public, but will be soon. Rick graciously invites us to come on his radio show, After Hours, which airs on Sunday nights from 9:00 - 11:00pm CST on WGN. What an honor! The boys are excited about this opportunity. A Red Orchid Theatre is currently running a Eugene Ionesco play called Victims of Duty, a lesser known work not often produced. It stars a wonderful group of actors, including Michael Shannon and AROT co-founder Guy Van Swearingen. It's an absurdist play that deals with memories and the concept of "non-theatre". Gary and Frank admit to being somewhat puzzled by the play's themes and structure, but praise the performances and the production design by Danila Korogodsky along with excellent direction by Shira Piven. Running through August 5, this show will keep you laughing, guessing and thinking. And pondering the absurdities of life and love. Rick regales us with tales of baseball, Riverview amusement park, Mike Royko, John Wayne, and Bushman the gorilla. We discuss his fascinating true-crime book Everybody Pays, co-authored with Maurice Possley. A real page-turner and we are hoping destined for a movie deal some day. One of the most generous people we've ever met, Rick tells our listeners that he will send a signed copy of Everybody Pays to anyone who donates $100 or more to the Booth One non-profit. On this historic anniversary we're going back in time to discuss a column written 50 years ago, upon the news of the assasination of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. He was shot in Memphis, but this piece by Mike Royko was published in Chicago the next day. It has become something of a famous column, and, as Indianapolis Star writer Zac Osterman tells us today, it still works, it still resonates, and it is still viable. At the beginning of the show you'll hear from Robert Kennedy, who was campaigning in Indianapolis on April 4, 1968 and delivered the news that King was killed and offered a short, powerful speech that is often credited with help calm that city.  Incidentally, today, the Kennedy-King Park where RFK spoke those many years ago, has just this week been named a national commemorative site. Dave Raymond and Duce Raymond - Sweet Baby Ray’s BBQ & Catering - @sbrbbq @sbrcatering @duceswildbbq - Chicago, IL *This podcast was recorded at the River Ranch Stockyards during the National Barbecue & Grilling Association’s #IAMBBQ2018 National Trade Show and Conference in Fort Worth, Texas. Summary: Dave Raymond the Founder of Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ Sauce, and Duce Raymond (his nephew) of Sweet Baby Ray’s Catering own two BBQ restaurants, a catering & events company, and compete in BBQ competition under the Duce's Wild brand. Dave and Duce share their generational journey of growing their business and starting new endeavors. They started by giving their sauces away as holiday gifts to family members and getting their feedback about the sauces. The sauces kept growing in popularity and the Raymonds kept up their grind to get their sauce in as many places as possible. Capitalizing on their success at Mike Royko’s Ribfest in 1982 Dave and Mike Obrien build Sweet Baby Ray’s into what today is the best-selling barbecue sauce in the country.  Sweet Baby Ray's Barbecue Sauces currently combine to take up 46% of the market share, as the sauces continue to expand internationally. Now a multi-faceted business operation, Sweet Baby Ray’s boasts two restaurants, a full-service Elk Grove Village location and a barbecue restaurant in Wood Dale run with nephew, Duce, as well as two premier catering companies. Dave currently resides in Wood Dale, close to relatives and life-long friends, and spends much of his spare time with the barbecue community, still lovin’ the ‘que crew as much as ever. Duce was destined for the food industry. Son of Chef Larry Raymond and nephew of Dave Raymond, the creators of Sweet Baby Ray’s Barbecue Sauce, Chef Duce grew up in and around restaurants and began working in the food and service industry at the age of 14. Realizing his passion, Duce later attended Kendall College Culinary School where he graduated with a degree in Culinary Arts, and was a member of Kendall College’s first graduating class to have completed a bachelor’s degree program in culinary study. Duce is now focused on his SBR Events Group Catering company and growing his line of sauces: Duce's Wild. His specialties include Southern and Central American cuisine and, of course, barbecue--which he has perfected at such recognized events and venues as the Taste of Chicago, the Naperville Ribfest, the Nugget Rib Cook-off, and the Wrigley Field rooftops. Duce has been a guest speaker at the world renowned Catersource Convention in Las Vegas as well as numerous times at the #IAMBBQ Trade Show and Conference for NBBQA. HOW DID THEY DO IT?
