Canadian students and survivors ‘shaken', but safe, after Houthi missile hits Ben Gurion airport

About 200 Canadian students, their chaperones and nearly a dozen Holocaust survivors were going through airport security at Ben Gurion International when they heard the blast. It happened on Sunday May 4, as the group was returning from a March of the Living trip–which took them to Poland and Israel–when a Houthi missile launched by Islamic terrorists from Yemen evaded Israel's air defences and exploded on the airport's access road. The Canadian group, along with thousands of other travellers, were ordered to scramble into safe areas or bomb shelters inside the airport until authorities gave the all-clear about a half-hour later. While eight people were taken to hospitals in Israel, none of the Canadians was injured. Many international airlines have cancelled or suspended flights for coming days. The March of the Living group used charters to reach Warsaw, then boarded a LOT Dreamliner aircraft, which landed in Toronto on Sunday night. The Houthi attack came after a tumultuous trip for the group, who had experienced the country's biggest wildfire, which burned the forests between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem before Israel's Independence Day on May 1. On top of that, the Iran-backed forces in Yemen have been escalating their ballistic missile attacks. Sunday's hypersonic missile was the only one the IDF failed to intercept, leaving a significant crater in the airport roadway and damaging part of Terminal 3. On today's episode of The CJN Daily, we hear from anxious March of the Living parents Jasmine Albagli of Ottawa; Mark Diamond and his wife Sharon, also from Ottawa; and Adam Cohen of Toronto. Aviva Klompas also joins: the Toronto-born author and Israel advocate, also happened to be at Ben Gurion airport when the attack struck. What we talked about: Hear how anti-Israel protestors at Auschwitz tried to spoil the 2024 annual March of the Living while one Edmonton family showed resilience, on The CJN Daily. One of the most powerful tools in the fight against climate change is the money sitting in investment portfolios - especially the trillions of dollars invested on behalf of public retirees. That's money that could continue to fund fossil fuel development, or help pay for  climate solutions instead.New York City has implemented an ambitious Net Zero plan for its public pensions. That plan includes divesting from some fossil fuel companies and investing billions of dollars in climate solutions. One company benefiting from that investment is NineDot Energy.   Wedged between an elementary school and a big box shopping center in the Northeast Bronx, NineDot Energy is operating a battery farm that the city's utility company, Con Ed, can call on to help relieve the grid when it gets overstressed. “The batteries hold a combined three megawatts of battery storage. That's enough to power about 3,000 New York City households for four hours on a hot summer day. Last summer, the battery farm was called half a dozen times, which was enough to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by a combined 24 metric tons. That's the equivalent of nine thousand car trips on the Cross Bronx Expressway.Currently, the city has the dirtiest energy grid in the state. More than 90% of its power comes from fossil fuels. NineDot Energy is still in growth mode, but battery farms like this could eventually help the grid transition to renewable sources, like wind and solar.“The sun only shines when nature tells it to; the wind only blows when nature tells it to, but people use electricity when they decide to,” explained Adam Cohen, co-founder of NineDot Energy. “A battery helps mediate that process. It pulls in the extra power when it's available, and then puts it back out when people call for it.” On a recent visit to the Bronx facility, 12-year-old Virtue Onoja showed off a mural she helped paint along with other students from the elementary school across the street, envisioning a future powered by cleaner energy.“One thing about me, I'm definitely an artist,” she said. “I drew a clear blue sky, no pollution, no nothing [and] beautiful yellow flowers and the sun.”There are also drawings of windmills and electric school buses. “There's still a lot of pollution, not just in the Bronx, but just in New York in general,” Onoja said. “All of this is the goal that we want to achieve.”This is an excerpt from the latest season of How We Survive. Many would agree there are few things better than sharing a delicious meal with the people you love, which is one reason why breaking bread together is a cornerstone of religions the world over. But so too is the opposite - going without food.  From Ramadan to Yom Kippur to Lent, fasting is an important ritual in many faiths. But why do so many religions periodically take away the very thing that nourishes our bodies and souls?  On this episode we'll talk with Khalil-Abdur Rashid about the role fasting plays in Islam, and why not eating and drinking is actually the easy part.  And we'll talk to Adam Cohen about some new research that suggests even one day of fasting could help deepen religious commitment and overall well being.Imam Dr. Khalil Abdur-Rashid is the first full-time University Muslim Chaplain at Harvard University, Instructor of Muslim Studies at Harvard Divinity School, and Public Policy Lecturer at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.Adam Cohen is a Professor of Psychology at Arizona State University. This Day in Legal History: James Earl Ray SentencedOn March 10, 1969, James Earl Ray was sentenced to 99 years in prison for the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Ray had pleaded guilty to avoid the death penalty but later recanted, claiming he was coerced into confessing. His conviction came just under a year after King was fatally shot on April 4, 1968, at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. The murder of King, a pivotal leader in the civil rights movement, sent shockwaves through the nation and intensified calls for racial justice. Ray's arrest in London after a two-month international manhunt led to one of the most scrutinized legal proceedings of the era. Despite his guilty plea, Ray repeatedly sought a retrial, arguing that he was a scapegoat in a broader conspiracy. His appeals were unsuccessful, and he remained imprisoned until his death in 1998. The King family later advocated for reopening the case, believing the government and other entities were involved in the assassination. In 1999, a civil jury in Memphis ruled in favor of the King family, concluding that the assassination was the result of a conspiracy, not the actions of a lone gunman. This verdict fueled ongoing debates about the true circumstances of King's death and the extent of Ray's role. The case remains one of the most controversial in American history, with lingering questions about the extent of government involvement. The King family's pursuit of the truth highlighted their belief that justice had not been fully served. While the official record still names Ray as the assassin, many continue to question whether he acted alone or was merely a pawn in a larger scheme.A Baltimore judge ruled that Adnan Syed, the subject of the popular Serial podcast, will remain free after reducing his life sentence to time served. Despite this decision, his 2000 murder conviction for the death of his ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee, remains intact. Judge Jennifer Schiffer stated that Syed is no longer a threat to public safety and that his continued freedom serves the interests of justice. Syed was originally convicted by a state jury, but his case gained national attention due to concerns over trial errors and potential prosecutorial misconduct. He was released from prison in 2022 after prosecutors questioned the integrity of his conviction, though an appeals court later reinstated it. The ruling ensures he will not return to prison, though legal battles over his conviction continue. His case has fueled ongoing debates about wrongful convictions and the role of media in influencing the justice system.Adnan Syed of 'Serial' Podcast Will Remain Free, Judge Rules (1)The Trump administration fired Adam Cohen, the head of the Justice Department's Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces, as part of a broader effort to remove career officials. Cohen, who had just helped draft a memo expanding the task force's role in immigration enforcement, said he was shocked by the decision and insisted his work had been apolitical. His dismissal follows other high-profile removals, including three assistant U.S. attorneys in New York, two of whom prosecuted a corruption case against Mayor Eric Adams. The attorneys were placed on administrative leave after Justice Department officials resigned in protest over pressure to drop the Adams case. Additionally, Liz Oyer, the Justice Department's pardon attorney, and Bobak Talebian, who handled Freedom of Information Act requests, were also dismissed. The shake-up reflects a broader effort to reshape the Justice Department under Trump's leadership, sparking concerns over political interference in law enforcement.Trump Justice Department fires head of organized crime drug task force | ReutersU.S. immigration agents arrested Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian graduate student at Columbia University, as part of President Trump's crackdown on certain anti-Israel activists. Khalil, a U.S. green card holder, had been active in pro-Palestinian protests and served as a negotiator with university officials. The Department of Homeland Security accused him of leading “activities aligned to Hamas” but did not provide details or charge him with a crime. His arrest was widely condemned by civil rights groups as an attack on free speech. The Trump administration also revoked $400 million in government contracts with Columbia, citing antisemitic harassment on campus. Critics argue the move is part of a broader effort to target higher education institutions and suppress pro-Palestinian activism. Khalil, who was detained at an ICE facility, had previously expressed concerns about being targeted for speaking to the media. Today we're back in conversation with Dr. Adam Cohen, social psychologist and psychologist of religion at Arizona State University, who shares another research project that explores the way religious ritual connects participants more deeply not only with faith, but with community — this time, not through the practice of abstaining from food, but from breaking bread together.  Dr. Arielle Levites, Managing Director of the Collaborative for Applied Studies in Jewish Education and a Research Assistant Professor in the Graduate School of Education and Human Development at George Washington University had the same idea — that observing Shabbat wasn't just a nice idea, it was a practice with measurable impact. So the team designed a study, enlisting the participation of Aliza Kline, founding President and then-CEO of OneTable, an organization designed to help young Jews develop independence and confidence in observing the ritual of Shabbat dinner in their homes. The question they wanted to answer? Does Shabbat dinner as a spiritual practice increase social connectedness? Read the transcript of this episode

Open source, by sharing knowledge, code, and documentation, has advanced the digital age, with Linux emerging as a pivotal force in the server domain, despite the commercial success of proprietary systems like Windows and MacOS. Linux's Dominance and Security in the Digital Landscape: The discussion underlines Linux's significant role in powering the internet, serving as the underlying technology for most servers. Cohen argues that Linux's open-source nature contributes to its enhanced security compared to proprietary systems, allowing for broader collaboration and scrutiny in its development. The Business Model of Open Source: Cohen dispels the myth that open source equates to non-profitability, explaining how companies can thrive by adopting an open core model. This approach allows for the core product to be open-source, with monetization coming from additional services or managed solutions, as seen with GitLab and Redis. Open Source in AI and the Debate Around Accessibility: The conversation shifts to the complexities of open-source AI, touching on Mistral's approach of releasing some models openly while reserving others for commercial use. Cohen expresses support for a model where older versions become open source as new iterations are developed, fostering a balance between innovation and accessibility. The Personal AI Wearable Project: Adam Cohen introduces his project of developing an open-source, AI-powered wearable device. He emphasizes the importance of user control over data, foreseeing a future where personal AI devices, intimately integrated into our lives, require transparent and user-driven data management to prevent potential misuse. The Implications of Closed-Source Wearables: Cohen raises concerns about the potential dangers of closed-source wearables, which could lead to invasive data collection and privacy breaches. His advocacy for open-source development in this domain is rooted in the belief that users should have absolute control and understanding of how their data is used and stored. The Role of Community and Ethics in Open Source: The discussion concludes with a broader reflection on the ethos of the open-source community. Cohen argues that open source is not just about technology development but also about fostering a democratic, inclusive, and ethical approach to innovation, ensuring that advancements are made transparently and with community input to avoid the pitfalls of centralized control and potential misuse of technology.
