Join us for an in-depth Millwall FC manager discussion as we break down the final three candidates rumored to be on the shortlist: Alex Neil, Matt Bloomfield, and Steven Schumacher. We dive into each coach's EFL Championship and League One managerial records, tactical approaches, and their potential impact on Millwall's long-term goals. We'll compare their strengths, evaluate their Championship promotion credentials, and consider which candidate could best align with the club's vision. If you're interested in the manager search, want the latest Millwall news, or crave insightful football analysis, this is the episode for you. Alex Neil: Pragmatic and Adaptable: Alex Neil is known for his pragmatic approach, often adjusting his tactics based on the opposition and his team's strengths. Formation Flexibility: He has used formations like 4-2-3-1 and 4-4-2 but is not rigid, often switching between systems within games. Counter-Attacking Style: At Norwich and Preston, he leveraged fast transitions from defense to attack. His teams are often well-organized defensively but quick to exploit any opportunity on the counter. Set-Piece Focus: Neil places significant emphasis on set-pieces, both offensively and defensively, using them as a key part of his strategy to score or prevent goals. Matt Bloomfield: Progressive and Player-Centric: Bloomfield emphasizes a modern, engaging style of football that focuses on player development and tactical adaptability. Flexible Formations: He tends to favor a 4-3-3 or 3-4-3, promoting a high-press system when possible, but he's known to adapt based on the squad's abilities. Possession-Based Play: While not strictly possession-oriented, there's a focus on maintaining the ball with purpose, moving it quickly to create openings. Youth Integration: His tactics involve integrating younger players into the first team, promoting a style that encourages creativity and expression on the pitch. Steven Schumacher: Dynamic and Attack-Minded: Schumacher's tactics are characterized by an energetic, attacking approach, aiming to dominate possession and create scoring chances. High Pressing: His teams at Plymouth were known for their high energy and pressing game, trying to win the ball back quickly in advanced areas. Formation Versatility: He often used a 3-4-2-1 or 4-3-3, focusing on width and creativity from the wing-backs or wingers to stretch defenses. Tactical Fluidity: Schumacher likes to keep opponents guessing with in-game changes, often switching formations or tactics to exploit weaknesses or counter opposition strategies. 0:01 – Intro and Welcome 1:12 – Overview of Final Candidates & Betting Odds 1:18 – Spotlight on Matt Bloomfield: Background, Style & Record at Colchester United & Wycombe Wanderers 14:00 – Discussing Millwall's Direction: Stability vs. Long-Term Vision 19:00 – Ambition, Resources & Realistic Expectations at The Den 26:28 – Steven Schumacher Analysis: Plymouth Argyle Success & Stoke City Tenure 33:00 – Alex Neil's Championship Credentials: Norwich City, Preston, Sunderland & Stoke City Insight 45:00 – Comparing Bloomfield, Schumacher & Neil: Pros, Cons & Potential Fits 52:00 – Final Thoughts, Fan Expectations & Holiday Wishes 53:28 – End of Show "The ultimate podcast for passionate Millwall FC fans!

In 1984, John Fashanu, a black Englishman of Nigerian descent, signed with the British club: Millwall FC; an openly racist club at that time. The semi-official chant the supporters sing from the crowd is: ‘We are Millwall, No One Likes Us, No One Likes Us, We Don't Care, We are Millwall, From the Den'. (The Den is the name of their home ground) The supporters hated him, they abused him, they threw bananas at him, they threatened his life if he dare stay. Somehow, as time progressed - they came to adore him. Impossibly, he became the most beloved player at the club. His passion, his skill and of course his goals just won them over, kind of like the Soviet crowd conversion in Rocky IV. In fact, they revered him so much that when he left the club, the ‘ultra' supporters – a notorious group known as the F Troupe – were so distraught, that they took out a hit on his life, and he had to go into hiding. And this is just chapter 4 for John – It was such a good time to chat with him - Give us a listen to hear it all. soccerPod - Ep: 20Thanks for listening! Each club in each country has a different song and here I could notice it, it is a very special passion that goes in a fan wherever he goes, regardless of the language. Dame Heather Rabbatts trained as a barrister – but that barely gets her CV started. She's also been a BBC Governor, the youngest-ever Chief Executive of Merton and Lambeth Councils, Head of Education at Channel 4, a Director of the Bank of England, a Board Member of the UK Film Council, and deputy chair of Millwall FC – and that's just to name a few.I wanted to ask her about getting ahead in big organisations and businesses – and she gave her take on that before speaking about retaining humility as you rise the ranks – as was so masterfully personified by Nelson Mandella, who she met while working in Lambeth.***MyTwitter: https://twitter.com/simonmundieInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/simonmundie/Email: info@simonmundie.comAnd for the 'Mundie on Monday' newsletter - featuring three of the best Life Lessons from four years and 200 of these conversations - head to simonmundie.com (where you can also drop me an email)Please do share this episode - it makes a big difference in helping people find this podcast. A traditional introductory song at Millwall FC, followed by a minute of applause for Millwall fans who have passed away, and an unusual "siren" tone chant across the crowd, unique to this team's fans.  Recorded by Cities and Memory.

Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

"This was one of the most ‘challenging' field-recordings I have worked with to date. It was not originally my own field-recording. I reflected upon the fact that there was a minute's applause for football supporters who had passed-away. The announcer says “May they all rest in peace” and “The applause will end on the referee's whistle”. With this in mind I created an electronic requiem, or lament, for the football fans who had passed-away. I also wanted to capture the awesome waves of energy that flow through a large human crowd, balancing flows of chaos and order in almost equal measures.  "I employed a number of Granular Synthesis methods and sample manipulation techniques (hardware and software) to create the electronic instruments, melodic content and atmospheric sounds, using harmonic tones found during the manipulation of the football crowd's sonic content. There are also organised ‘chance-operation' hardware Modular Synthesis methods and techniques employed within elements of the soundscape." Millwall FC chants and songs reimagined by ‘Zoundskaap' (Alan D. Miles).

In this episode I'm joined by Millwall FC goalkeeper George Long. George shot to prominence as a young goalkeeper at Sheffield United, breaking into the first team as a teenager. A series of loans allowed him to develop before returning to his parent club and amassing over 100 appearances for the Blades. We spent this episode reflecting on the lessons he has learned throughout his career, and how these experiences have contributed to him becoming one of the league's most high-performance goalkeepers. We discuss: The power of consistency and applying yourself everyday Relentless focus and driving towards your goals How purposeful practice can completely change your mindset when it comes to talent and development Accepting your circumstances to maximise your potential The importance of being present and not looking back into the past, or too far forward into the future Challenge vs Threat state mentality when making your debut The unimportance of opinions and the importance of thick skin How communication can transform the ordinary to the extraordinary This episode really resonated with me because I know from my own experiences how powerful purposeful practice really is. There is great advice in this podcast which will undoubtedly impact a lot of goalkeepers in a positive way. If you're looking to understand why hard work beats talent, and how you can achieve high-performance, this is the episode for you.
