This week on Surviving Roots, I'm joined by Dr. Gertrude Lyons—master coach, podcast host, and author of Rewrite the Mother Code: From Sacrifice to Stardust. Her work is a deep call to reclaim the way we mother—not just our children, but ourselves. With features in The Guardian, Motherly, Thrive Global, Business Insider, and beyond, Dr. Lyons is leading a movement to challenge generational norms, uncover inherited beliefs, and help women rewrite the internal code we've been conditioned to live by. We talk about: The quieter symptoms of the mother wound. How generational trauma shows up in motherhood. Why “doing it all” doesn't equal doing it right. And how to reclaim joy, intuition, and enoughness in your own story. This is a powerful conversation about honesty, boundaries, identity, and breaking free from outdated definitions of caregiving. Whether you're a mother, mothering something, or reparenting yourself—you'll find a piece of yourself in this episode.
This week on Surviving Roots, I'm joined by the one and only Valeria Lipovetsky—a content creator, entrepreneur, podcast host, and mother of three whose grace and grit have built more than just a brand—they've sparked a movement. In this deeply honest conversation, Valeria and I talk about what it means to mother ourselves while mothering others, the silent pressure of perfectionism, and the generational healing it takes to raise kids differently than we were raised. We explore cultural legacies, family dynamics, reconnecting with biological roots, and the emotional journey of writing your truth. This episode is for anyone unpacking their upbringing, redefining strength, and learning to feel joy again.

Hello to our 2024 audience! It is such a pleasure to join you on life's journey. I feel like I have been Around the World in 80 Days and it sounds like it because neither Tanya nor I took more than 4 breaths throughout the entire podcast. We are so happy to be back together with each other and all of you. Snow and ice are falling across the US and we exchange snow stories of food, activities, and movies. The winter weather kept Cliff and me in Atlanta overnight, but I share some tips I picked up as we acted out the movie The Terminal (You know the one where Tom Hanks is stranded in an airport) Additionally, Shawn acted out the movie Driving Miss Daisy (You know, Morgan Freeman) on his snow day. I talk as fast as I can about our niece's wedding, the Zack Williams cruise, and the Miss America Pageant and Tanya asks all the right questions to keep me on track. We get hung up on the Sister Wives scandal and can barely speak of the Golden Bachelor wedding. You'll get that. We all compare ourselves. It's human nature! In this episode we learn about the social comparison theory made famous by Leon Festinger in 1954, how to compare ourselves in a less judgmental way, what it means to make temporal comparisons and how we can learn from the comparison tricks people use with money. Instead of trying to stop the comparison tide completely, this episode is about using our natural ability to compare in a way that is more helpful for you and your finances. As always, I love to hear from you! Hey Mama, Have you ever asked yourself these questions when it comes to parenting your teen girl? Why doesn't she cuddle with me like she used to? She's always in her room, is there something going on? She says I don't understand her, what am I doing wrong? You may have even thought, “I don't even know who she is anymore!”. You found yourself googling for answers to your questions like, How to fix my teenager's attitude How to talk with my teenage daughter Why is my daughter freaking out over everything? How to have a better relationship with my daughter? Or Ways to have fun with my teenage daughter This roller coaster of emotions your teen is experiencing has you feeling frustrated. You are starting to feel like you are the only one dealing with the drama your once sweet girl is suddenly creating in your home, and you have no clue how to parent your teen. You don't feel equipped with the right tools to raise your teen girl. Stricter rules and discipline are not working. They actually make it worse. And forget about putting your foot down, she might even walk right over it. Ah! You lack the confidence in relating to your teen daughter. Maybe it is the lack of a role model growing up that has you feeling lost, or maybe it is not being familiar with the changes happening to your daughter. What worked for your mom may not be working for you in raising your teen girl. Maybe it's because you want more than just telling her what to do. You want a healthy Mother-Daughter relationship. The problem is, this is unfamiliar ground for you and may feel guilty or last about it. You want the best for your daughter, but there is so much information thrown at you, you don't know where or how to start. Hi, I'm Jeannie Baldomero. I was that teenage girl you are googling about! I think back to when I was 13. Whew. I don't think I would like myself. LOL! I was rebellious, full of attitude, and so hard to relate to. But honestly, Why 13? It was the year my mom said, “I don't know who you are anymore”. It was the year I made so many dumb mistakes which led to a cascade of other mistakes into my adult life. I was that young girl that needed guidance; that needed help even when I rejected it. I needed a mentor to guide me, not my inexperienced friends to lead me. This is why my heart is here with young teen girls. I partner with you, a mom full of unconditional love, and help you guide her towards recognizing the identity that is uniquely handcrafted for her. I'm a wife and mom of 3. A teenage daughter and young adults. I must say parenting has been a roller coaster ride of twists and turns and unpredictable dips that can throw us off our feet. My passion for healthy families as a former educator and as a homeschooling family for several years, and zeal to impact young teen girls has led me to partner with moms like you and guide them to create healthy relationships with their teens. In this podcast I share tools and resources to help reconnect you with your daughter confidently. I'm providing you relationship-building exercises to make intentional connections, establish boundaries, and build a community to confidently get you through this season of raising a teen. Mama, I'm here to tell you, you are not alone. Raising a teenage daughter is hard. But don't let this season rob you of the joy of having a daughter. Coming from the mouth of my own teen daughter, mothers & daughters are DYNAMIC together. So grab your coffee and fuzzy throw and let's dig in to Raising Teen Daughters Confidently. Are looking for a mom community? The common thing I ask the moms I work with to be most valuable is having a community with other moms who get it. Who are in the weeds too. Moms who are also in the season of raising tween & teen girls. We need each other to vent, laugh, encourage and support on another. If that's you too, I have a free mom community I invite you to be a part of. It's just me this week with a short episode talking about what we (or at least what I) expect of summer and how drastically different it looks by the end of the sunny season. This episode came to me on our family vacation. We and our very close friends have rented 2 RVs and driven from La to TX, down to the Mexico boarder, NM, and are now headed back. It's been a whirlwind adventure and by this point (with a day and a half left) I'm just about spent. We all are! It's been hilarious, tense, incredibly beautiful, and crazy fun. However, and to be perfectly honest, I struggle figuring what day it is (forget even asking me the date) and I have no idea which time zone we're in. And, as I type and post this episode (because I finally have 2 bars of service,) we are bumping down one of the few no so great Texas roads (at least, I think we're back in Tx now...) and I'm listening to the constant walkie talkie radioing between Smith (my husband) and A-A-ron (My friends husband.) One last funny insight... I love this description of our 2 families. There are 10 of us. 2 RVs. 4 Adults.6 Kids. (5 boys + 1 baby girl)And half of the kids are on the spectrum and the others like pushing all buttons and boundries. We are one Motley Crew! We are interesting. Funny as all get out. And, the national park rangers may not be our biggest fans. I hope you enjoy this episode. Don't forget to connect with me on Insta @amykathleen.ak or with The Collective @inside.thecollective.
