There's a girl in the castle! Courtney and Emily invite you to be our guest for a latest Fairytale Favorite episode. The tale as old as time, “Beauty and the Beast” by Jeanne-Marie LePrince de Beaumont, was the inspiration for the 1991 Walt Disney animated film. There are many differences between the 14 page fairytale and the 90 minute film, but there is beauty found within both. Last fall saw the release of a massive new autobiography from legendary Disney Imagineer Bob Weis, who ultimately led Walt Disney Imagineering as its president toward the end of his career with the company. Dream Chasing: My Four Decades of Success and Failure with Walt Disney Imagineering recounts Bob's amazing time with Disney Imagineering, working on new theme parks like the Disney-MGM Studios and Tokyo DisneySea to conceptualizing projects that never materialized. It's a wonderful look at not only one person's career, but also the major endeavors that they contributed to. Hi-ho the me-ri-o! Courtney and Emily have no strings to hold them down as they celebrate the 85th anniversary of Walt Disney Animation's second motion picture, Pinocchio, by comparing the film to Carlo Collodi's original novel, “The Adventures of Pinocchio: Story of a Puppet.” Collodi's episodic adventure takes readers to the puppet show, the not so wondrous meadows, Playland, the bottom of sea…pretty much everywhere that is not school as Pinocchio learns to accept the consequences of his actions and tries to become a real boy. Courtney and Emily are all in this together for this nostalgic discussion of Disney Channel and Ashley Spencer's book, “Disney High: The Untold Story of the Rise and Fall of Disney Channel's Tween Empire.” The Disney Channel was falling behind in children's programming in the 1990s until they discovered the tween market and launch millennial defining television programs such as Lizzie McGuire, That's So Raven, Hannah Montana, High School Musical, the Suite Life of Zack and Cody, Camp Rock, and Wizards of Waverly Place. But while tweens were eagerly consuming media, music, and merchandise, a lot was happening behind the scenes. High school is a formative time in an adolescent's life and 2000-2012 were Disney Channel's high school years as the network and its stars tried to find their identity. Courtney and Emily welcome back Michael Lyons to the Book of the Mouse Club to discuss his latest book, “Magic Moments: Stories, Lessons and Memories from a Twenty-Year Career at Disney.” This book is a perfect selection for the end of the year because it is about reflecting on past experiences and the lessons learned along the way. Michael talks about his two decades of experience at the Walt Disney World Resort and your hosts reflect on their magical work experiences in the park as well. Michael, Courtney, and Emily consider the lessons they've learned working in park operations and how those lessons can be applied to work and life outside of the parks. The Disney Keys and the mission to “create happiness” can be a good mindset to kick off the upcoming new year. During the Disney100 centennial celebration of the Walt Disney Company, Disney's animated films and theme parks have been getting a lot of attention. But what about its live action legacy? Many may associate Disney live action with recent remakes or Marvel and Star Wars, but with over 300 films, Disney has 70+ years producing live action films. To celebrate this medium, hosts Courtney and Emily welcome back author Spencer Wright to talk about his new book, “The Enchanted Disney: Stories of Walt, Hollywood, and Live-Action Film.” Wright wanted to celebrate actors of the Hollywood era in which Walt created the Walt Disney Studios. Actors such as Suzanne Pleshette, Debbie Reynolds, Maurice Chevalier, and Peter Lorre may be best known for films from other cinema studios, but they also shared their talents with Disney and helped shape the contemporary live action Disney studio we know today. What's better than one podcast episode? Two podcast episodes! It's a Disney Leadership Duo crossover between Book of the Mouse Club and Notably Disney. Courtney and Emily welcome Brett Nachman of the Notably Disney podcast back to the show to talk about Disney Legend Jim Cora's memoir, “Not Just a Walk in the Park: My Worldwide Disney Resorts Career.” Cora started his career as a park operations trainer and went on to lead Disneyland International which was responsible for bringing the magic of Disney parks to Tokyo and Paris. From his grandmother yogurt starter to his encounter with Walt Disney to opening Disneyland Paris, Jim Cora's story teaches us to grow roots wherever life plants you. In tandem with this discussion, your hosts join Brett on a new episode of Notably Disney to talk about Dick Nunis' memoir “Walt's Apprentice: Keeping the Disney Dream Alive.” Both Nunis and Cora worked in park operations and helped transition and grow the Walt Disney Company and theme parks after Walt's passing and have many lessons in leadership to share from their combined 87 years of experience in the company. Consider yourself at home with this final installment of the British Invasion Summer Series. Hosts Courtney and Emily welcome back Dr. Doug Kern and Dr. Paul Cote as guest readers to compare Charles Dickens' 1838 novel, Oliver Twist, to Disney's 1988 animated film Oliver and Company. Drastically different, you will not recognize Billy Joel's beloved portrayal of Dodger from the Artful Dodger in Dickens' original story, but both the film and the novel have their own merits that make each a classic. You do not have to worry, the conclusion of this summer series has plenty of street savoir faire which might encourage you to revisit this pre Disney Renaissance film. “You Must Be This Tall” to ride, but there's no height requirement to listen! Consider this your “Keys to the Kingdom” backstage tour of this fun theme park novel, inspired by the experiences of a former Disney Cast Member. Courtney and Emily interview Natalie Keller Reinert about her book “You Must Be This Tall,” a fictional story set in America the Beautiful theme park featuring a cast of Patriot employees. Natalie's multiple perspective story takes readers through the Patriot and park guest reactions to the company's leaked plans to refurbish a beloved opening day attraction. A social media blogger causes further trouble for the frontline working Patriots who are just trying to get through the day with a smile on their face and their initial love of the park intact. The book opens the door to readers to become a Patriot employee for the day and experience what it is like to work in immersive entertainment. Any former front-line worker reading will definitely identify with Tabby, Sonia, and Antonia's day to day park experiences in retail, attractions, and moving up into leadership positions. Drama, romance, runaway teenagers, and…Walt Disney World? Believe it or not, Walt Disney World was featured as a setting in a Harlequin Romance novel in 1986. Detective Daniel McGuinn and Barbara Emerson are searching for Barbara's step-daughter who runs away from Baltimore to Walt Disney World. Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair! Courtney and Emily return to their ongoing series, Fairytale Favorites, with a comparison of Grimm's Fairytales “Rapunzel” and Disney Animated Studios' 50th animated feature, “Tangled.” Like most fairytales, the original source material left Disney a lot of room for interpretation but did you know that the story actually moved from Italy, to France, then to Germany? Rapunzel's history is as long as her hair and changes more times than Pascal during a game of hide and seek. If you've got a dream, you do not want to miss the discussion around this fairytale favorite. Courntey and Emily wrap up the Legendary Summer Series with Dame Julie Andrews' second memoir “Home Work: A Memoir of My Hollywood Years.” Andrews' memoir takes place from 1962-1986 starting with her Hollywood debut in Disney's “Mary Poppins” and ending with her second husband's semi autobiographical film, “That's Life!” Andrews reflects on the work and self discovery it took to balance a new career on the silver screen and a home life which included divorce, a second marriage, two step children, two adopted children, therapy, multiple family emergencies, and living around the world. In between hardships, Andrews also humbly shares all of the amazing opportunities and memories she has making movies and learning how to use and harness her talents. Courtney and Emily conclude the episode again talking about the criteria to become a Disney Legend and discuss how Julie Andrews managed to achieve it with just one film. Courtney and Emily continue their Legendary Summer Series with “From Disneyland's Tom Sawyer to Disney Legend: The Adventures of Tom Nabbe” by Tom Nabbe. A Disney 55er, Tom Nabbe was a newspaper boy hired as a young teenager by Walt Disney himself to personify the youthful adventurer, Tom Sawyer, at Disneyland's Tom Sawyer's Island. However, his Disney career wasn't limited to the shores of Rivers of America. In his 48 year career, he also spent time operating attractions, supervising food and beverage locations, and managing warehouses. He helped open Walt Disney World, Epcot, and Disneyland Paris but is most known for the Nabbe Grabber to help guests retrieve lost items in the parks. His recognition on Main Street and as a Disney Legend is well deserved reminding us that anyone can become a living legend. Let's get together yeah yeah yeah…for a Legendary Summer Series! This summer, Courtney and Emily are reading memoirs of Disney Legends. This episode kicks off the summer with “Forever Young” by Hayley Mills. Most known for her performances in Pollyanna(1960) and The Parent Trap (1961), Hayley made six films for Disney and grew up on the silver screen right before the eyes of her audience. Her memoir however, tells the story of the growing up she had to do off screen as she transitioned from a child actor to a young adult. Hayley Mills' expert performance is extended to her writing. Her vulnerability and melancholic reflection pulls readers into her remarkable story. Courtney and Emily discuss her story through the films Mills made for the Disney Studios and why she is deserving of the Disney Legends Award. It was all started by a …rabbit? The rights to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit were reacquired by Walt Disney Company in 2006, but prior to his homecoming, few people knew about Walt's first cartoon character. Oswald was left to a few paragraphs or the footnotes of Disney history books, until David Bossert came along. In celebration of Oswald's 95th birthday, hosts Courtney and Emily are joined by the author of “Oswald the Lucky Rabbit: The Search for the Lost Disney Cartoons.” Bossert discloses how a casual online article turned into a multi-year search for the lost cartoons and a book that gave Oswald a chance to take center stage. Oswald was only created and produced by Walt Disney and his animation studio for one year. It was a tragic parting, but without the lesson's Walt learned in the movie business with Oswald, Mickey Mouse and Snow White may have never graced the silver screen. Oswald truly is a lucky rabbit for the Walt Disney Company.
